Below is the profile of Nigeria by The World Factbook, I humbly request you to look at it and tell me if you do not agree with it.
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ni.html
as i said, CIA factbook is used for academic research resource in america, and is reliable if mathematical figures that we can compare with other sources is involved. when it comes to human judgement that can be biased, CIA will write what they wish to write in favour of america and against america's enemies.

i read the nigerian data you asked me to read. i agree with a lot of it, but the poverty rate is wrong at 70%, wikipedia says 45%. world bank refused to agree with nigerian newspapers and national bureau of statistics NBS that quoted 60% poverty rate, for reason of NO RELIABLE DATA AVAILABLE ON NIGERIAN POVERTY RATE, so where did CIA get 70% when world bank says even 60% is wrong and over-estimated ?

neutral opinion polls in nigeria also disagrees. http://allafrica.com/stories/201305160619.html

N.O.I. Polls Limited, Nigeria's leading opinion polling and research organisation, recently released a report, which focused on an age-long myth on the country's threshold of poverty, against the global standard of $1per day. Abimbola Akosile examines the findings

The issue is simple. It is not whether there is poverty in Nigeria or not. And it is not whether majority of the country's 160 million citizens are poor or not. Enough statistics have shown that already.

The question here is how relative poverty is among the citizens, with focus on the amount spent on food daily, in comparison with the global standard or threshold of $1 or N160 a day.

It is easy for a self-styled 'poor' man in Nigeria to spend up to and even more than N300 on a meal in a day, and to eat two of such meals in 24 hours that is about $4 a day on food. It is equally easy, according to analysts, for a poor man to eat a meal of less than N150 just once in a day. In a simple way, poverty is relative, based on the subject, or in this case, the citizen.

i made the post below about two weeks ago.

world bank rejects nigeria poverty rate reports

Quote :

"Even the World Bank has repeatedly said it has no confidence in the poverty index reports regularly issued by the Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) which recently released its National Poverty Index report, because "there is no reliable data with which to correctly measure the decline or increase in Nigeria’s poverty rate."

weblink source

http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/issues-in-the-new-poverty-report/137011/

Current minimum wage in Nigeria is about $4 a day, but world standard poverty line is about $1 a day.

minimum wage in nigeria is 4 times bigger than world standard poverty line

the above quote settles the dispute of poverty rate figures for nigeria
CIA factbook requires that we read it with our minds free to think, how does a report remove Russia and China from the list of developed countries and replace them with South Africa and Turkey ? even in my primary/elementary school days i wont believe that. Russia was in space orbit even before America !

i rest my case. everyone is free to believe what the wish. no quarrel bro. peace and harmony.

Fighter Pilot: Objection!! The level of poverty in SA is 32%, but it is still high though.
wikipedia says 35% yes i agree. the indexmundi corresponds with the 50% by south african patrick bond.

for me as usual, i go with wikipedia, less bias and more neutral, it also gets edited after sometime by moderators who remove data found to be false or has error.

DictatorZAR:
The truth is the South African Government classify SA as a Developmental State, or as some put it a advanced deverlopental state with allot of things still needed to be done mostly in Primary Education, Healthcare and rural development.

South Africa is trying to in trench more industrial developments, SA is still work in progress and will only be developed by 2025 if the goverment continue with its current infrastructural developments which is the largest on the continent. Education and development first then can u be classified as developed, when all departments focuses on maintaining standards rather them trying to set standards and implement new policies to achieve them.

grin
voice of a south african who wants to face reality, not a biased false report from CIA factbook.

south africa is the most developed country in AFRICA not a world rated developed nation by UN standards.

Fighter Pilot: Aguagust do you know that even China, with all its influence in the world has poor citizens than any citizens in SA and Nigeria? Chinese are very poor bro.
there are slums in america, russia, china, nigeria, south africa, britain, etc. we all know that.

only few countries have no slums, i guess maybe Switzerland, UAE/Dubai as capital, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Singapore, etc.

i did my research before i raised objection...

Poverty rates : Russia 13%, China 13%, America/USA 15%, South Africa 50%.

source, a neutral private sector research NGO that helped fortune 500 : http://www.indexmundi.com/g/r.aspx?v=69

russia and china have less poverty than america and south africa.

no honest person will agree with you that south africa is more industrialized than russia and china.

source : everybody knows the truth, dont look for weblink.

only you is making that CIA factbook a list of final authority, other south africans like @DictatorZAR are honest enough to reject it.

go to a world forum and speak in public, say that Russia and China are NOT developed countries but South Africa is developed. try it bro ! grin grin

Fighter Pilot: Have you finally ceased to become an American citizen now? I thought you were an American.
i have dual nigerian and american citizenship.

CIA factbook is accepted in america as resource for academic research, but many americans who are intelligent dont trust every information in it. a lot is true when verifiable mathematical figures/data are involved, but some of it is false, biased, and misleading when human judgement of the writer is involved.

i will not be mentally enslaved by america because they gave me american citizenship. Russia and China are developed countries, no american CIA report will brainwash me with a factbook and remove that truth from my brain.

if you are america's enemy they will paint you with the colour of a dog or goat. thats what CIA does to Russia and China.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust:
Fighter Pilot: In this case I concur with what Ndubuisi asserted that before you can ever think of buying Submarines, rather vote for that allocation to build better internationally recognised universities with foreign lectures who will make sure that what you are being taught is in line with what other students across the world are learning. Submarines, modern weapons manufacturing and third generation fighters are not toys, because they need graduates of international education standard to control. He has clearly seen that gap.
my argument defeats yours on technical grounds and logic. if CIA factbook is a universal standard in south african universities for global economics/finance, it is NOT so all over the world especially in those group of developed countries who dont allow america to kick them around.

we nigerian graduates have traveled to europe and america to earn first class university degrees in the same class/course where the white students made second class degrees. many nigerian students make GPA of A while the americans make a C in the same classroom.

south african graduates need to travel outside soweto and learn from the other developed parts of the world where people have used education to free their minds from colonization of america.

many americans who are intelligent dont trust their CIA...

there is a difference between university education that makes you become a listener to professors and the one that makes you a good thinker like the professors. i have the second type.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust: 3:41pm On May 25, 2013
Fighter Pilot: ..
in case you dont know, the average american graduate knows only about 10% of what an average nigerian graduste knows about the rest of the world outside america. they will ask you a black man....where do you come from ? you say nigeria, then they say is it near to jamaica ? you say no, its in africa. they say okay so your country is africa, is nigeria the capital city ? real life senario. worst if the american university graduate has lived all his life in Alabama
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust:
Fighter Pilot: This finally closes the chapter of accepting people's misconception about Nigerian graduate, including their doctors. There is general believe across the world that Nigerians like to fake their qualifications. Indeed, you are living in your own world of academy and not in the one we know.
i dont care what you say, my thinking/analysis alone shows the public that i have a good university education. i have seen post graduate students defeat professors in argument with facts and research on campus. nobody is perfect in knowledge. i can challenge anybody's claims if i have logical argument with facts, i dont care who has a Phd above my MBA.

i have not met any professor that says CIA factbook is superior to United Nations published reports on world economy.

United Nations have an office in every country of the world. does CIA have an office in every country of the world to capture, collate, verify, validate, and process data as required for credible academic or organizational research reports like the UN does ?
do i sound like a fake MBA ? if you know what an MBA really is.

the first thing education did for me is to give me liberty of mind, its very hard to deceive me, i will use my head and think properly. i dont just swallow what people tell me even if it is american president Obama talking to me. my education has made me free from being misled.

are you aware i posted here some weeks ago that world bank refused to accept published reports of nigeria,s poverty level at 60% ? world bank said...no reliable data collected/verified is available to conclude nigeria's poverty level, so the world bank decided to shut up. that is what we call institutional credibility.

i live in the world of truth that does not favour your argument. why should i swallow a CIA report when i know it is biased ? let CIA list Russia and China as developed countries and i will believe their report.

any university professor that agrees with CIA report saying Russia and China are NOT as developed as South Africa, is a professor overdue for retirement and redeployment to teach in a primary/elementary schools.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust:
Fighter Pilot: No matter how hard you try to justify your explanation, you lost bro. The very CIA reports are used by Universities across the world. Being MBA graduate from America you should know that, or perhaps should I say that you been lying to us all this while. I have been using the CIA compiled information ever since I started my high school education when we needed to make research of any country. Shame on you for discrediting your US acquired MBA.
yes the CIA tells lies...to america and to the whole world many times. the CIA killed an american president John F. Kennedy, killed a nigerian president General Murtala Mohammed, killed a nigerian president elect M.K.O. Abiola, but CIA denies all these truths, CIA is a big liar.

CIA will mix the truth, with lies painted as truth, and truth changed into lies....that is the special job of CIA, its all about american interest especially white race people in america, CIA is their secret weapon against the rest of us coloured people. FBI is a bit better though.

american CIA is a big liar and killer...see why i cannot disclose my full identity on this forum? i will say things about america that can make CIA hunt for my head !

you can rely on CIA data where it does NOT contradict other reliable sources like world bank, united nations, encyclopedia britannica, recognized library academic research works, etc

Fighter Pilot: what determines the graduation of one country to the developed state, included are conditions of infrastructure as well, life expectancy and others. Excellent health facilities, Industrialisation, level of literacy, rapid urbanisation, middle-income, level of poverty, city transportation and overall excellent city infrastructures are also some of the factors which qualify the country to graduate.
the same factors you listed above are very similar to what the IMF and UNDP used to rank DEVELOPED countries.

i quote below :

"The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, standards of living, and quality of life for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to distinguish whether the country is a developed, a developing or an underdeveloped country, and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life. The index was developed in 1990 by Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq[3] and Indian economist Amartya Sen."

weblink source : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index

....and after using the same factors to rank countries, south africa is still NOT on the list of top 47 developed nations of the world.

Fighter Pilot: One economist also noted that there is no much of a difference between what you find in developed countries and SA.
so why did CIA remove Russia and China from the list ? is south african development better than that of Russia and China?

Fighter Pilot: Note: there is a difference between advanced economies and developed countries. A country can however be classified as developed, but its economy struggle to make the ends meet. Typical examples are Spain and Sweden.
yes i know the difference between advanced and developed countries, but what factors/indexes/indices did CIA use for their ranking ? they did not specify, so how do we judge ? why did CIA remove american 'enemy' Russia and China from the list and put Turkey the american ally/friend that has US military bases in europe ?

CIA is a controversial agency that labels some countries as friend and others as enemy. IMF and UNDP are more reliable.

that CIA list is a personal 'wish' list of some unknown analysts somewhere. we all know that south africa is a balanced country in terms of development and the most industrialized in africa, but fails on HDI because of high poverty rate, the worlds recognized economists say you CANNOT be a developed country and have a persistent poverty level of 1 out of every 3 people in your country, its a world standard, i dont see anybody competent enough to change this standard principle.

South Africa loses its ‘War on Poverty’

By Patrick Bond, Durban
August 6, 2010 – Shortly before Pretoria’s presidential power change from Thabo Mbeki to Jacob Zuma two years ago, the South African state announced its War on Poverty. What news from the front, in the immediate wake of World Cup host duties that showed observers how very pleasant life is for the rich and middle class here?

We don’t know, because the War on Poverty is one of the most clandestine operations in South African history, with status reports kept confidential by a floundering army in rapid retreat from the poor, who are estimated at half the society.

Initially the War on Poverty appeared as a major national project. Early hubris characterised the war, as happens in most, with victory claimed even before Mbeki officially launched it in his February 2008 State of the Nation speech.

Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by agaugust:
https://www.cartoonstock.com/newscartoons/cartoonists/pfi/lowres/pfin36l.jpg

Fighter Pilot: The official classification of "advanced economies" is originally made by the International Monetary Fund(IMF). The IMF list doesn't deal with non-IMF members. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) intends to follow IMF list but adds few economies which aren't dealt with by IMF due to their not being IMF members.
CIA SAYS :

the top group in the hierarchy of developed countries (DCs), former USSR/Eastern Europe (former USSR/EE), and less developed countries (LDCs); includes the market-oriented economies of the mainly democratic nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Bermuda, Israel, South Africa, and the European ministates; also known as the First World, high-income countries, the North, industrial countries; generally have a per capita GDP in excess of $15,000 although four OECD countries and South Africa have figures well under $15,000

....and eight of the excluded OPEC countries have figures of more than $20,000; the DCs include: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holy See, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, NZ, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UK, US;

.... note - similar to the new International Monetary Fund (IMF) term "advanced economies" that adds Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan but drops Malta, Mexico, South Africa, and Turkey.

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/appendix/appendix-b.html

QUESTION MARK ?

my understanding is very clear, and my point is that CIA includes south africa despite the fact that it does NOT meet the standard criteria of per capita GDP above $15,000 so why does CIA include it on the list with per capita GDP $9,600?

IMF did not drop south africa for membership reason, because 2012 updated IMF membership list shows that South Africa is a member of IMF and so is Turkey, Mexico, but they were all dropped from the top 47 advanced countries list updated march 2013, south africa is NOT on the list. IMF standard HDI is 0.8 but south africa scores 0.6 and thats why it is dropped by IMF.

IMF MEMBERS LIST INCLUDES SOUTH AFRICA AS MEMBER OF IMF GENERALLY, BUT NOT AN ADVANCED COUNTRY AT MARCH 2013

list of IMF members 2012 updated

http://www.imf.org/external/np/sec/memdir/memdate.htm

UNDP list of all countries of the world in order of being "advanced" ranks south africa in 121 position below as botswana leads in africa.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index

i agree that in africa, south africa is the most industrialized nation, no doubt. heavy industries due to european and american companies that set up huge factories in south africa for over 100 years. the point where south africa drops is likely because of poverty level of 35% of population
, same reason drops nigeria to 153 position with poverty level 45%.

south african poverty level is too high to make the country rated as an advanced nation by both IMF and UN, i will rather believe them than CIA data. we know IMF and UNDP are experts in the field of world economics and finance, but who are the kind of professionals in CIA and what is their level of expertise and experience?

the CIA list that includes south africa, has NO economic index/factor used to judge, so how do we justify who is listed and who is not ? no reason, just some CIA people making a 'wish' list and creating confusion.

if industrialization is the only reason for being an advanced country, Russia, India, Brazil, Pakistan, North Korea, China etc would have made the list, but they did not.

all these said, i am NOT an enemy of south africa, i wish the rainbow nation well and good luck. africa needs south africa to join hands with other countries like nigeria, ghana, algeria, etc and build our continent.

The countries mentioned below on the weblink are the top-20 most industrialised countries in the world and of which SA is one of them.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/G20_industrial_nations
i looked at your above source again, i discovered that G-20 is a mixture of both developed and developing nations, i quote below :

"Bring together systemically important industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy."

thats why indonesia and south africa are there to represent the growing nations of asia and africa, NOT because they are now also ranked as developed nations.

the real developed natios of the world are stated by IMF below (i will rather go with IMF a world expert in economics than CIA a world expert in national security/secret service/espionage )

i quote below :

"Many countries listed by IMF or CIA as "advanced" possess an HDI over 0.788 (as of 2010).

The latest index was released on 14 March 2013 and covers the period up to 2012. The following are the 47 countries in the top quartile - having an HDI above 0.8, and classified as possessing a "Very high human development".

military power depends very much on economic power and technological level of development. its hard to separate the two. both factors give us idea of which nation can wage a war and sustain it, and who will be the first to recover after a prolonged war. zimbabwe and ghana should have been on the top ten ranking of military powers in africa, they both have the british military training/professionalism as nigeria and south africa....but money/economy was a big problem that reduced their major combat capability form many years, they are just trying now to re-build their military.

It was announced officially that SA is no longer listed as a developing Country and that she and Turkey were the latest to be officially classified as DEVELOPED COUNTRIES.

SA is no longer classified as developing country by CIA, the world body which classify developmental state of any country. Here below is a weblink to read further.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_Factbook_list_of_developed_countries

Goodbye the old SA.
that source is unreliable.....

what is a tiny Faroe Island doing on that list while the paradise called Singapore is missing ?
what is Iceland with its collapsed economy doing on that list and the worlds 2nd biggest economic giant China is missing ?

the source also contradicts itself below...

The CIA argues that the countries in its list are

also known as the First World, high-income countries, the North, industrial countries;

The CIA notes that these countries
generally have a per capita GDP in excess of $15,000; although four OECD countries and South Africa have figures well under $15,000.

that source is as bad as global firepower that ranks Thailand's military above North Korean and South African military...thats big a joke, Thailand has more Rice farms than North Korea and South Africa, but not more military weapons. lol grin

so dont start dancing and drumming, i think some dude wats to give you some 'hallucinations' lol grin
at the african level, south africa is the most developed for reasons of its 5 million white men citizens who built is like Europe because they thought they would rule there forever, but the black men were lucky that politics changed in 1994 with mandela becoming president.

maybe one of my last replies to you as a person.

it is more expensive and a bigger financial loss for nigeria to refuse to build a stronger military.

nigeria loses $12 Billion every year to oil thieves. multiply the oil theft amount by 40 years, its $480 Billion loss to oil thieves, and compare the cost of new navy platforms of once and for all cost $2 Billion that will last for 40 years life-span in naval service.

you say you are an auditor, so do the mathematics and annual cost apportionments.

nigeria's military budget is about $3 Billion a year including soldiers salaries (a from of employment/job creation), locally purchased weapons from DICON and others (a form of domestic trade/economic production), imported weapons (a form of advanced technology transfer including building of ships at lagos-apapa dockyard by China and Holland).

nigerian navy has reduced oil theft and saves nigeria Billions of dollars with new boats and warships already acquired, and the navy will further improve on this success with more sea going platforms and helicopters.

without a powerful military, nigeria will become like Congo DRC one of the biggest countries in africa in terms of land size, population, and the second richest in mineral resources valued at $24 Trillion, yet a tiny country like Rwanda with a more powerful army is inside Congo DRC stealing their gold, diamonds and other minerals while the Congo DRC army and air force are too weak to stop the stealing.

Congo DRC population is 75 million, Rwanda is 11 million people
Congo DRC land size is double of Nigeria, Rwanda land size is like Oyo state

this tiny Rwanda is robbing huge Congo DRC of her minerals in broad daylight and Congo's Military is too ill-eqippped to stop it.

other small countries like Burundi and Uganda also have their military forces looting Congo DRC mineral wealth on a daily basis, the Congo DRC army and air force is not powerful enough to stop the invaders and looters of its nation and wealth.

@Ndubuisi711, do you want to sell Nigeria into the hands of invaders and thieves ? your own F.amily might be victims of that disaster too.

homerac7: Oh no! you are irredeemably stupiid. you keep delving into issues you know next to nothing about. Silence is sometimes golden, because it is better to keep quiet and be assumed ignorant than speak and remove all doubt. angry

What do you say is your position again?...state auditor?...and you are this ignorant?...please who is the "Oga at the top" that foisted your ilk on that unfortunate state department? undecided

Guy, go back to your alma mater (UNIABUJA, i guess undecided ) and return the certificate they gave you, apply through your lawyer for refund of school fees plus interests and damages for what they did to you by teaching you voodoo-econimics instead of proper education you paid for. Now use the money to go pay for proper tutorship in economics, then come back and resume with this thread. Until then, ...GERRAOUT! angry angry angry

Ndubuisi711: I repeat, Nigeria has no any intention of procuring heavy armaments other than small arms. Our politicians have over-emphasised the fact that heavy artillery will not make Nigeria to look beautiful and rich rather will starve its people.
oga, that is your own personal wish, but it wont work, so sorry sir.

ministry of defense has a multi-billion dollar budget and has paid already for heavy weapons for nigerian military worth billion of dollars. the navy received over 300 small combat boats costs about $300m, paid for 4 light stealth frigates worthy about $700m and thats about a billion dollars already.

you want to personally go overseas to the weapons producers and collect the money back to nigeria ? you dream brother. lol grin

if nigeria has the kind of weak military you desire, we will become like Mali that was defeated by islamic rebels in the north and Malian army ran away to the south while its air force was helpless. Mali is now being rescued by military forces from France, Nigeri, Chad, etc. it seems you like to become a prisoner of war and get tortured by your enemy while the invading men take over your wife and sisters to become their own tool for pleasure. i pity you @Ndubuisi711, i really pity you. may Chineke save you o !

snydergp: What nonsense are you talking now. What is there to learn from a nation like nigeria, SA's Recce forces have been in existence before Nigeria was even declared a Independent state in 1960(no offense).

SA's military doctrine is different from Nigeria, training, culturally and ethically, the same goes for Egypt, Angola, US, China and Others, so I don't see any point in what you've just posted here.
weapons manufacturing is a science, but war fighting is an art. thats the difference. be humble and learn from those who know more than you do, thats the only way to avoid another south african army defeat by seleka rebels type of ragtags.

learn and dont go and turn south african women into young widows.

Henry120: Nice media opps by the south africans, this is one area where our army is lagging behind. In nigeria the military, not until recently( navy and to some extent airforce) do not release photographs. Most of the pics posted by nigerians are either random photographs or troops personal photos. The south africans, egyptians, algerians and even the Kenyans understand the value of good photo opps. However in nigeria the army is still stuck in the past.

That been said, the last 2 photos I pasted, show major flaws in south african military "retreating" training.

When troops retreat the way the south africans have in the first photo, they leave themselves very vulnerable to enemy attack. Only one soldier is providing covering fire for seven(7) retreating troops.

* As we can all see clearly the training is still on.

This is how we do it in nigeria, all seven(7) soldiers would been on crouching position, facing back towards enemy position, the last soldier in the line stands up and sprints( in a crouched position) to the first soldier in line, while the other six provide cover fire. The sixth soldier, now the seventh in line performs the same routine as the seventh soldier who is now the first soldier.

This process repeats itself again and again until they get to their chopper awaiting to ferry them away. What it means is that at all times during the retreat, the soldier retreating has 6 rifles providing cover fire for him, as he retreats.

Just my observations in the 2 photos, observations were SANDF can learn a couple of things from the nigerian military.

Ndubuisi711: Gentlemen unfortunately Nigeria has no any interest of procuring submarines that Augustine has spoke about, rather she is focusing on building her economy to compete with the rest of the world. Nigeria has got no intention of expanding her arsenal. Such attempts has failed many times because is not a lucrative deal.
Sorry sir, where are you posting from ? I hope you didn't write your above comment lying down with a laptop on a psycho hospital bed. grin
