Benin city

BENIN CITY - A student body under the aegis of Edo Youths For Good Governance (EYFGG) yesterday carried out a protest march, calling on the federal government to revert its decision on the removal of fuel subsidy.

The group also circulated a letter which was signed by its President, J.C. Iyamu Osaro and Director of Public Affairs, Comrade Ehigiator James, saying the decision for the removal was orchestrated by the ruling class to continue to impoverish other poor Nigerians.

He said unemployment which had been the bane behind the criminal vices like kidnapping, armed robbery, bombing and insecurity in the land could have been addressed through direct investment on infrastructural development across the decaying sector of the economy that spaned the length and breathe of the country.

The group which carried placards with inscription such as: “Say no to fuel subsidy removal”, Say no to austerity measures” and Say no to local colonial leaders on fuel prices” accused the President Jonathan-led government of inflicting pains on Nigerians.

The statement added, “Since Jonathan emerged as the President of Nigeria, we have continued to experience economic crises, insecurity and another pain have been added unto our pains, we are saying no to fuel subsidy removal, we are saying that Jonathan should harness the resources of the country, he should create an idea that is geared towards impacting on the lives of our people.

Today we see austerity measure in the country; we are ready to join all the civil groups to protest the removal of fuel subsidy. We will continuously embark on massive protest, there is going to be revolution like what we see in Libya, Jonathan is a failure.

Civil societies in Rivers ready for showdown - South-south

Different civil societies in Rivers State have condemned the recent decision by the Federal Government to hike the price of fuel from N65.00 to N141.00. They have also declared January 9, this year, as a rally day, rebuffing the State Commissioner of Police, Suleiman Abba, who on Monday, stated that “the strike does not mean demonstration and procession.”

The groups, United Action for Democracy(UAD), Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development, Ogoni Solidarity Forum and Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), on Tuesday, criticized President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration for being insensitive to the hardship faced by Nigerians.

National General Secretary of UAD, Comrade Ken Henshaw, while addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, said they were ready for a peaceful protest no matter the statement made by the Police Commissioner.
Henshaw insisted that their fundamental human rights to orgainse a peaceful assembly should be respected.
The groups called on members of the public to resist the fuel subsidy removal and frowned at government’s unwillingness to arrest and prosecute the cabals involved in illegal petroleum business in the country.

We shall mobilize citizens to begin an indefinite series of actions aimed at registering discontent over the suffering this policy has already begun to bring about,” he stated.
The CLO, in particular, urged for the immediate sack and arrest of Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonji-Iweala, and Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido, for imposing fuel hike “aimed at destroying the economy and inflicting more pains on the suffering people of the country.”
In a statement signed by its chairman in the State, Obodoekwe Styvn, the CLO demanded the disbandment of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency(PPPRA) for its un-usefulness to the society.

Mikeansy, I would share a little food for thought for your enjoyment/information.
In my town, there are these three villages we use for certain proverb illustration. Let's just call them villages A, B, and C, respectively.
We say that when one is at town A, but wants to get to town C, he/she cannot stop at B and say he went to C.
The journey must be complete, from A to B and then C.

I have noticed that you have been distancing yourself from Jonathan/PDP lately, and have been making statements uncharacteristic of a PDP man.
Do you know, for instance, that the ministers are representatives (per quota system) of the 36 states of the federation? You talk as if GEJ administration just woke up to appoint all those ministers by whims. No my brother, it ain't so. They are working with the PDP constitution.

I personally do not believe in quota system/federal character. That is why I am not a PDP man.
If you want to criticize GEJ, let is be total and complete. Repudiate and drop PDP and all its ways as well. And don't stop there; endorse another party.   undecided

I am an APGA man.  cool

That is why I say that those who criticize this policy are not sincere. Jonathan's crime, to them, is that he dared to win the presidential elections (as a minority from SS). Subsidy imbroglio is a pretext to vent their innermost anti-Jonathan sentiments.
That is why I am not supporting this protest one bit.
  cool cool

you see the reason why i said you people are tribalistic. who cares what region or statue Jonathan is from ?

Why fuuu.,cking cares if he is a majority or minority.Similar protest was seen during Obj and yaradua (protest to make GEJ the president) etc

SO why cares what region or ethnicity he is from ? They just took light about 10 mins ago and I do not have enough money during the day to buy fuel. SO DO YOU THINK I CARE IF HE IS FROM A MINORITY ACCORDING TO UR WORDS OR A MAJORITY ?

Please onlytruth and other SE tribalist. Use ur unclog ur brainsf from all this tribalistic sentiments for once.

The real protest should come if the subsidy removal is not used for the listed purposes but used instead to subsidize corruption.
The SW and the North should give GEJ a chance to perform and succeed. They are the clog in the wheel of progress now.

Removal of subsidy is a perfect thing to do to help jumpstart the economy
My only problem is the timing. It should have come around April when folks have settled down to the new year
But now that it has come, protesting is a useless venture
Yes, it is too early to say that the SE/SS will not protest, but I pray they do not.
The police should quell any unnecessary protest: this one is one unnecessary protest. that my family will not be involved in.

First of all, no political party in Nigeria has an ideology, whether ACN. APGA, ANPP, CPC or PDP; they all ol boy institutions for grabbing power at the centre and stealing our eyes blue. And that is the lamentable state of things the current govt has inherited.

However, GEJ does have an ideology. It is one which drives both himself and his govt; it is that ideology that influenced the selection of Okonjo Iweala.
GEJ is a capitalist to the core. For the first time in our history, all govt policies are focussed on enterprise, from foreign policy to the way the oil sector is shaped. Every last part of govt is set to be streamlined for efficiency.
After this subsidy brouhaha, comes intensive public service reform, the death of NNPC, the death of PHCN, the death of the land use decree etc (all of this should happen this year); we are in for a ride on the path to productivity, instead of the current indolence. It is a future of progress.

Now that subsidy (which does not exist) has been removed, what benefit is the government giving us now ?

The Enugu State Co-ordinator of Neighbour2Neighbour Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organization, who worked for the emergence of Jonathan as president, Dr. Chinedu Jideofo-Ogbuagu, has condemned the decision of the Federal Government to remove fuel subsidy.

He described the development as bad luck to the country.
Jideofo-Ogbuagu said: “We laboured and sacrificed greatly for Goodluck during the April 2011 presidential campaign. I lost my brand-new jeep and other valuables worth N17 million and almost lost my life to armed robbery attack at Kogi/Benue border on February 18, as I was taking Jonathan campaign materials from Abuja to Enugu. Eight months later and with Goodluck Jonathan as our president, fuel has jumped from N65 to N200 per litre. Only bad luck could produce such an outrageous and ridiculous price. Was this what I fought and almost died for?”
Also, a renowned Professor of Economics and former vice chancellor of Crescent University, Ogun State, Sherifdeen Tella, has faulted the Federal Government’s decision to remove the subsidy.

In his reaction, Prof. Tella said the decision would spell doom for the nation if allowed to continue because the policy failed to take into consideration the informal sector production unit that depend on petroleum for operation.
Tella, who was also the former Dean, Faculty of Social Science and Management, Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), said other sectors that power their operations with small generators would find it hard to survive, which could result to unemployment.

“Unemployment with its attendant social implications as well as inflation should be expected to rise within three months from now,” he said.
Prof. Maduabuchi Dukor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, who described the decision as authoritarian and despotic also expressed similar concerns. He said the policy was an ‘undemocratic action induced by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank economic imperialism, which only ends in the empowerment of corruption and corrupt office holders through direct and indirect appropriation of the national wealth and the excess oil revenue’.
Although the current Head of Department of Business Administration, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Ezinma Nwadiogwa Nnabuife, hailed the decision because of its long term benefit to the economy. She said the wrong timing of its implementation had imposed suffering on the people.
According to her, the full implementation of the policy had hiked the pump price of fuel and ushered an astronomical increase in transport fares across the country.

You are right. We just have to keep following things.  Have you gotten a copy of the "SURE" programme?  Check out the outlined projects and see for yourself.  I do not see any major project going to the East.  They said that "three refineries" will be built; one in Kogi, Bayelsa and Lagos. Most major Hydro power projects will be in the North.

It is high time we start to pioneer developments in the East in our own way. Just like Rochas is doing.  This is why I am advocating of thinking for ourselves because it seems everyone is beginning to answer their fathers name in terms of Development.

why can't we stage a protest for the inclusion of the east in any infrastructural development.

The protest for the east started in Lagos (Ohaneze lagos) why can't we contiune ?
