by martin ovono Govt is deceitful – Onovo With that situation you expect a sensitive government to grow the economy and manpower. What the government is doing instead is to promote foreign products and the next thing is removing deregulation and allowing importation of petroleum products. What type of economic policy is that? Let me tell why my party is against deregulation. Deregulation subverts the GDP, causes hyper inflation, leads to the devaluation of the naira, and devaluation of the real income of workers. It will lead to mass poverty, massive unemployment and industrial crises and death of few surviving industries. Since 1999 we changed into what we now call democracy, which to me criminocracy. our entire economic sector has changed into a negative trend because this is not a democracy. If it is a democracy all the indices will show in all sectors. If this is a government that is sensitive to development you would have seen the trend in development of the nation. Another thing is, is there actually a subsidy? Because all studies show that there is no subsidy, even the NNPC study showed that there is no subsidy. Decree 24 of 1995 by Abacha showed that was no subsidy; former Economic Adviser, Professor Aluko said that there is no subsidy. Former Petroleum Minister, Tam David West said there is no subsidy. Even former Head of State, General Buhari confirmed that there is no subsidy yet government insists that there is subsidy by trying to confuse people. Remember Obasanjo increased oil price several times with the reason that it would boost the economy with accruals from the oil price. Tell me, since then has the economy been boosted? Now, they have removed the oil subsidy with the same reason. Tell me, how can Nigerians believe them? You said there was subsidy but the government claimed it spent N1.3 trillion on it. I have been telling you about deceit, all these are deceit. Check the list of those that benefitted from the subsidy, are they not their friends? Check those who financed the PDP elections and the launching of the party secretariat in Abuja, and then you will know what I am talking. If not, tell me what concerns a construction company with oil importation and oil subsidy. Again I want to tell you the list the Senate published is just to divert attention, later it will go like the power investigation done by the Hon. Ndudi Elumelu committee of the House of Reps and others. How do you see comments that Nigerian refineries are being sabotaged by some people, who are equally frustrating the building of new ones even when licenses have been given to some people? What is the work of the SSS if there is sabotage on any of the country’s investments? If there is actually a sabotage or a syndicate the SSS should investigate them. It an incompetent government that gives such reasons. It is because of the blackmail and illegitimacy of those in power that make them not to act. They are not sensitive to the plight of Nigerians. The Nigerian refineries are not working because of the same reason the Benin-Ore road is not working and the Nigerian Railway Corporation NRC and others are not working. It is the same reason taht late Ojukwu and late President Yar’ Adua traveled abroad for medical treatment. What do you think is the way forward for the country? First of all, we must get an ethical leader, who is legitimately voted in to fight corruption because the corrupt can not fight corruption. Check what the former EFCC chairman said. According to her, there is government interference in the fight against corruption that is why there is bottle neck in the fight against corruption and all those who looted and are looting the country’s wealth are moving about free. We must change the leadership of the government, not those who want to initiate single term of government. Your party the AA, was the first to take INEC and President Jonathan to court and up till now you have rejected the outcome of the 2011 general election that was considered free fair by international and local observers, why? First of all your presumption was wrong. International observers did not conclude that the election was free and fair. Absolutely to our party, the Action Alliance, there was no election. http://vml1.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/onovo-2.jpg |
Politics / Govt Is Deceitful – Onovo by aljharem3: 1:18am On Jan 04, 2012 |
BY NWAKANMA CHUKWUMA ENGR. Martin Onovo, the Presidential Candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in the 2011 general election. In this interview, he spoke on the removal of fuel subsidy, and why AA is challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC over the conduct of the 2011 polls among others. Excerpts: AS an Engineer and expert in the petroleum sector, how do you see the removal of fuel subsidy? First of all let me tell you there are certain propaganda and information that are sponsored by government that are very destructive, like this issue of subsidy removal. We are seriously against that. You see, you grow economy by productivity that is why you measure the economy by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in terms of goods and services. Economic stability is checked with inflation rate. In the US in the last five years the inflation has not reached 5 percent, but here in Nigeria it is on the high side. In economic analysis, you check certain factors like unemployment rate, productivity, output and input and manpower rate. Here, the unemployment rate, according to independent data is over 70 percent, forget the CBN figures. Now, with near super-hyper inflation around the corner, undue pressure on the naira, massive unemployment and poor transportation network across the nation, removal of oil subsidy will cause drastic economic hardship in the country. *Martin Onovo With that situation you expect a sensitive government to grow the economy and manpower. First of all your presumption was wrong. International observers did not conclude that the election was free and fair. Absolutely to our party, the Action Alliance, there was no election. For instance, in the presidential there was no election, it was obviously a flawed election. Before the election proper, there were more than 150 pre-election cases, I mean litigations against INEC.It has never happened before in Nigeria, even during Maurice Iwu. Few days to the election just after the first cancelled presidential election, the Action Alliance filed a suit against INEC on unlawful exclusion of our candidates precisely on February 18, after we had written a petition on February 2 to INEC Chairman on the exclusion of our candidates which they have not replied till date. Our lawyers wrote to them on behalf of the party, we have evidence of their receiving the letters, with copies to INEC secretary, INEC Commissioners and to their legal department. After that, closer to the elections again we went ahead and got a Federal High court order mandating INEC to list our candidates in the election, INEC ignored that order and went ahead to conduct the election. Tell me, how you can conduct a free and election outside the law? http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/01/govt-is-deceitful-onovo/ |

Politics / Quit Threat To Christians: Acf, Afenifere, Opc, N/d Group, Nirec, Others React by aljharem3: 1:10am On Jan 04, 2012 |
BY Our reporters The umbrella association of all socio-cultural organisations in the North, the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, the Gombe and Plateau State governments, Oodua People’s Congress, Nigerian Inter-religious Council, NIREC and the pan Yoruba’s Afenifere, yesterday, condemned the demand by the Muslim’s Boko Haram sect that southern Nigerian Christians living in the North leave the area within three days, describing such demand as not only empty but uncalled for. ACF saidBoko Haram could not speak for majority of Muslims, let alone for the whole North. The Plateau and Gombe state governments also reacted to the three days ultimatum, assuring that they would protect the lives of everybody living in their states irrespective of the tribe or religious inclinations. Boko Haram spokesman, Abdul Qaga, had told newsmen in a telephone interview Monday that Christian and other Southerners living in the North should leave the area, vowing to confront troops posted to curtail its activities in some volatile northern states. It’s an empty threat – Afenifere National leader of Afenifere, a pan Yoruba group, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, described as empty, the three-day ultimatum by Boko Haram as the events that would follow would be disastrous to everybody. However, the National Coordinator of Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, Otunba Gani Adams asked southerners living in the north lo leave to avoid blood bath just as the Niger Delta Group said the threat was aimed at bringing down the government. The Voice of Northern Christians Movement led by Pastor Musa Dikwa said the threat was empty. This was as NIREC urged Nigerians to disregard any threat from any group asking them to leave their houses, promising adequate security for every Nigerian living anywhere in the country. Jonathan is their target — N/Delta group A pressure group, Niger Delta Nationalities Forum, in Lagos State, said the threat by the Islamic sect was aimed at bringing down the government of President Goodluck Jonathan. In a telephone interview with Vanguard, chairman of the group, Mr Manager Seigha berated the group for making such a threat, noting: “The threat will not pay anyone. “Our group is of the view that they (Boko Haram) will be affected most. We also think they are trying to execute the promise they made to the President because they promised to make the country ungovernable for the president because he won the 2011 presidential elections. The threat has become political which is aimed at over-throwing his government. We are not afraid of the division of Nigeria because it will help us to develop at our own pace. We are ready if they (Boko Haram) want to divide this country.” Boko Haram can’t speak for North However, in its reaction, ACF, through its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Anthony Sani said: ‘’There have been such threats from both the south and the north of recent. But our attitudes have been that they are are better ignored, precisely because just as those from the south cannot speak for the good people of the south, Boko Haram cannot claim to speak for majority of Muslims, let alone for the North. In any case, there are Muslims in both North and South. “We still urge Boko Haram to use the available due process of addressing grievances in the country to address their concerns rather than harassing innocent people who are not even aware of what the sect stands for. ’’Constructive engagement for the purpose of true reconciliation that go with genuine forgiveness is about the only path to peaceful coexistence needed for socio-economic and political development of Nigeria.” Don’t be intimidated – Plateau govt Also, the Plateau State government has called on the people of the state not to be intimidated by the threat of Boko Haram sect to vacate the Northern part of the country, re-affirming government’s commitment to securing the lives and property of every citizen. Similarly, Senator representing Plateau South, Mr Victor Lar, has condemned the ultimatum, describing it as seditious. The state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Yiljap Abraham, who made government’s position known to Vanguard, yesterday, said the country’s constitution guarantees the right of every Nigerian to move freely and reside in any part of the country. “The Nigerian constitution gives liberty to all Nigerians to move freely without hinderance. Indeed, we call on the good people of Plateau to remain calm, be alert and refuse to be intimidated in any way, but to stay committed to all efforts in maintaining the peace toward a better Plateau,” he said. Lar in his reaction said the statement was inflammatory but should not be trivialized by government, stressing that a stop should be put to the impression that the more trouble you cause, the better attention you get from government. According to him,“we have created an impression that the harder you shoot, the more attention you get. Before now government has not been able to differentiate between popular community demand and criminality. All were lumped together under the name ‘agitation’ and this has led us to where we are today. ’’Amnesty in the South-South part of this country has created an impression that the harder you shoot, the better response you get from the government. “However, the government should not treat the ultimatum by the Boko Haram with kid gloves. Government can discuss with the group but not negotiation; they know them. But the ultimatum is highly seditious and it should be resisted.” Gombe govt assures residents Gombe State government in its reaction also assured residents living in the state especially, southerners of adequate protection of their lives and property even as the police in the state said “there is nothing that is getting out of hand as far as security is concerned.” Speaking in a telephone interview with Vanguard, the State Commissioner for Information, Rev. Habu Dawaki, said: “I assure you, Gombe State is a peaceful state and we have always lived in peace with everybody and we have not had any challenges and we will not have any challenge. We have all live in peace with each other. So, be rest assured that Gombe is the ultimate destination for peace”. Similarly, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ebikeme Orubebe said although he was not aware of the said ultimatum, the police in the state were abreast of the security challenges in the country. ARP tasks N-Assembly African Renaissance Party, ARP, yesterday, urged the National Assembly to reconvene as a matter of national urgency, to help tackle the Boko Haram threats. Mr Udoka Udeogaranya, Lagos State chairman of ARP in a statement, said there was need for the lawmakers to enact a law that would punish perpetrators and ensure that everyone joins hands to end the menace. The party said: “It is our opinion that the ultimatum by the sect, amid a rising tide of violence, gives a profound recognition that punitive measures are needed. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/01/quit-threat-to-christians-acf-afenifere-opc-n-delta-group-nirec-others-react/ |

Confirmed Subsidy: Jonathan summons emergency FEC meeting ABUJA – IN a bid to ensure proper articulation of government’s policy direction on the implementation of the removal of fuel subsidy Goodluck Jonathan has called for an emergency Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting, scheduled for tomorrow. The Federal Government had at the last session in December, fixed the 2012 inaugural FEC meeting for January 11, 2012, but had to bring forward the first session to January 4, due to pressing issues. Vanguard gathered that President Jonathan summoned the meeting which is expected to begin by noon, to lay bare government’s strategies for managing the looming government-labour face off over the subsidy removal. It could not however be confirmed as at press time if the Dr Christopher Kolade subsidy reinvestment board and the Alfa Belgore labour negotiation committee will be inaugurated at the meeting. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/01/subsidy-jonathan-summons-emergency-fec-meeting/ |
