The strike embarked upon by Nigerian university lecturers may be called off soon. This is due to the progress made at the about 7 hours meeting at Abuja on Friday the 20th of November, 2020. Government have now agreed that pending the integrity and other test to be carried out on UTAS it will pay ASUU members even as they have not enrolled on IPPIS.

The FG also agreed to release additional money to cover the earned academic allowance and revitalization. Revitalization involves but is not limited to repairs in universities, new buildings, new equipment, modern laboratories. Revitalization funds are not for ASUU members but for the betterment of universities structures and amenities.

ASUU is asking further for a review of the salary of its members. Lecturers say the last time their salary was reviewed was 2009. ASUU is also requesting government to create universities it can adequately fund. The salaries of majority of lecturers have not been paid some since February while others since July.

Students and parents are praying, wishing and anxious that the strike ends so they can get back to classes for lectures as others elsewhere in the world are doing.

With this development, the decision of ASUU on whether the strike persists or not will be known soon.

The reinstatement of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos came as a relief to academics and non academics and the town who believe in due process. The committee set up by the Federal Government to find out facts about the incident observed that due process was not followed. The discovery can be interpreted in Yoruba to mean that ‘won fe fi owo ola gba Prof Ogundipe loju’. Prof Ogundipe needs to thank his God and all who stood by him! All who stood to condemn the act.

What lessons can we learn from the sack and reinstatement:

Every individual has a senior or superior. As a boss, if you overstep your bounds in dealing with your subordinates, remember that someone will ask you. Someone can review the discipline and deal with you. that reminds me of a story by someone who worked in a company somewhere. Staff resumes by 8 am and close by 5 pm. The boss in the Department however, will start marketing her bread when she resumes. She will settle down for work by 10 am. One day she reported one of her staff to management that he lives the office too early by 5 pm when they are still working. The staff told the management that he follows company rules on resumption and closing but that the boss sells bread when she resumes and settles to start work by 10 am. The subordinate was excused and the management panel faced the boss to find out about the bread sales in the company. Leaders and rulers should be careful!
Any case can be reviewed. Since any case can be reviewed the onus lies on all leaders to ensure that they act in such a manner that no matter who reviews the case they will be found to have done what the higher leader would have done.
Subordinates also have people. That someone is a subordinate to you does not imply he or she does not have supporters and followers and well wishers. What played out at Unilag is a clear example of that. Lets be careful!
Any relationship can be strained. This is another big lesson. Any relationship can really be strained and get bad. Its vital to guard our relationship with people. After building a relationship, strive to maintain it. Try to imagine a VC and a Pro- Chancellor at loggerheads. Over what? the relationship between them must have been smooth before something started. Oil and gel your relationships.
Everyone should know his or her boundaries. A leader has boundaries and he or she must know that and adhere strictly to those boundaries. In the case being looked at one or two persons overstepped their boundaries and they paid for it. A leader is not flawless. a leader is human and can err.
A leader should avoid taking unilateral decisions. As decisions need to be taken, a leader should delegate and allow others to have their input before taken any final decision. In this case, the sack of the reinstated VC seem to be without that.
Share your vision and make your intentions known to people. As the Pro-Chancellor exited himself, he stated some laudable plans he had for Unilag, his alma mater. he should have informed of that before the whole problem erupted.
Make peace, win friends. We need ourselves. No one is useless. Anywhere you are, try to make peace as much as you can. Even when someone offends you, make peace. Cover up for them. They will respect you for that. Those same people may most times be useful to you later. Even as the matter is currently, enemies can still make peace and they should.
Don’t under rate anyone. Stakeholders in our systems should be allowed to play their stake holding roles. By so doing the system will be better for it.
In summary. Avoid fight with whoever. Go in peace.

The daughter of President Muhammadu Buhari went on twitter after a few Nigerian descended on palliative warehouses and helped themselves to rice, indomie, spaghetti, gari, salt, macaroni, oil, and other food items available in the warehouses. The academic staff of Nigerian Universities have been on strike for some many or few months now. My sister is a lecturer. He is our breadwinner and she is winning the bread from salary paid to her as a University don. She has not been paid since February, 2020. She lectures at University of Maiduguri. I have another close pal who helped my son with his admission for free last 2 years at ABU and he claimed they are yet to be paid since July (no pay for 4 months!).

Speaking on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television today (Thursday, 29 October, 2020) the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adeshina said the President knew about all that is happenings in the country. He said the President had HELICOPTER view of all happenings.

That HELICOPTER view makes me to begin to wonder at events and our President or my President! By implication, the president is aware ASUU members have not been paid for months and he is looking the other way? By implication, schools have resumed but University students can’t resume studies and the president is aware and doing nothing? By implication, the president knows that lecturer’s wives/husbands, children and dependents are finding it difficult to cope since they are owed for at least 4 months and the President is behaving as if he is unawares! What a president we have if he is truly area?

HELICOPTER view is good view and is enough view.

If the president means business with his HELICOPTER view, he should ensure ASUU demands are met to enable students go back to their classes. I don’t know much about the cause of the imbroglio but whatever it is, this is the time for the president to wade in with executive fiat. The presidents name will be mentioned not just the minister or accountant general of the federation or whatever advisers (good or bad).

Its high time to mutate the HELICOPTER view into TELESCOPIC and then MICROSCOPIC view. This will sure help to mitigate further environmental, psychological, health, economic and etcetera damages to all parties.

My brother is a university lecturer. University lecturers were owed during the national lock down! Buhari want them genocided? Currently, they are owed for between 4 and 7 months. This is the question you should ask the government. Let them pay ASUU All their entitlements as agreed anyway or anyhow. Fund education via any bank and anyone. If ASUU still misbehaves then we all will know. But since NASU, SSANU, and many other toothless unions are complaining on ippis, it's imperative that we take ASUU serious. ASUU members have not been paid for 4 months now and some for 7months. If na you wetin you go do?

University lecturers have not been paid July, August, September and October salaries. What did they and their families do?

The body language of the president and his stand can be decisive in the direction the whole nation goes. A leader is a monitor, mentor, motivator and model.

Leave pdp alone and give Nigerians your campaign promises. Free education. Housing for all. Poverty eradication. Job for all. Health for all. Security for all. One dollar=one Naira. Stipends for elderly and unemployed...

I am surprised if the food items are really covid-19 palliatives. University lecturers were not paid during that lock down and no palliative given to them. Do you realize that apart from collecting salaries in multiple places, they have not been paying commensurate taxes over the years. In a saner clime, they will be forced to pay into FG coffers all the outstanding taxes they have evaded. ASUU is fighting for their selfish interest!!Not only should SARS be ended, #EndASUU should also be trending.
