my elder sister has this same problem. as i type ryt now ours doors are all locked. hers began in december 2013 and has really never gone. pls pray for us too. i rejoyce with you and ur family.

Please Advice!! My Sister Needs Urgent Help. bynaijainstinct: 1:13am On Jan 09, 2015

I have never imagined before now that I would bring my family issue to an online forum but this water don pass my garri o.

I'll try to summarize my story as much as I can. My sister (in her late 
twenties) was quite promiscous in the past until she became 'born again' mid last year 2014. Infact, she has a child out of a failed relationship (outside wedlock) before she became born again. Suddenly, after accepting Christ at a popular Pentecostal church, her behaviour began to change. 

First, she started withdrawing herself from everyone and would only 
interact on few occassions. She would wake up to pray at night so loudly that she didn't care if others were sleeping. Later, she started dreaming and began to suspect anyone she saw in her dreams. It got to a point that whenever a visitor came to the house, she would start anointing every corner of the house and speak in tongues. 

After some months, she withdrew her daughter from me and my mum and made sure that we spent very little or no time with her daughter. She would stay for hours in her room without interacting with any of us. She got a very lucrative job offer but rejected it because she claimed that she was called to ministry. Only for her to start seeking for job weeks later while still maintaining that she has a calling to ministry.

Despite all the church-going & prayer sessions, she still exhibited her attitude of quick anger, pride and arrogance at the slightest opportunity. 

Few weeks ago, she introduced a new dimension to her faith. She started pouring large quantities of olive oil all around the compound and house.
Last week, I was shocked to discover she anoited the wall lamps, sockets, electronics, books, utensils, walls, windows, doors, gate, etc in a very disgusting and careless manner. She was just pouring the olive oil over them. 

Yesterday, she took out every single cloth, underwears, shoes, bags, 
bedsheets, pillows, pillowcases and burnt them to ashes. She also took all that of her daughter and did the same. I thought that was all, until I discovered she broke her wall mirror, burnt all papers and academic credentials including her WAEC, PRIMARY, BIRTH, LGA, BSc DEGREE certificates. She burnt all her daughter's results, school books, school bags, uniforms, everything. As at yesterday afternoon, her daughter had nothing to wear not even panties, while she herself tied just a wrapper (belonging to my mum). 

Now, her room is clear and empty, not even her mobile phone or HOLY 
BIBLE was spared. Everything went into flames including all my CDs in the sitting room (both secular, gospel, movies), the decorations on the DVD stand and the wires I use to connect my phones to the home theatre. 

Surprisingly, she went into my mum's room and burnt some of her gospel 
books, tithe booklets and other items we are yet to identify. 

When I heard about this development, I rushed to my room to check if my 
belongings were safe. To the glory of God, they were. My mum has cried 
her eyes out and has reported to everyone possible. I called my sister 
aside to find out why she did what she did. Her response was 'they are 
my personal belongings and I can do whatever I wish with them'. So I asked why she tampered with my CDs and mum's stuff, she said she didn't 
know they were among the stuff she burnt. When I kept pressing, she said
she saw ants crawling over them, so she burnt them. What an excuse!

I'm a moderate christian who skips church many-a-time. Please, I'm worried about her, her state of mind, her safety and also her daughter. 
Could this be hypnotism, delusion, conviction, manipulation, forces of 
darkness or just mental disorder? 

Has anyone experienced this happen to someone close? Please help me! I 
need advice on how to help my sister. God bless you.

What do you think were the factors that led to your sister's depression?
You mentioned she has a child... Did her husband leave her or something? Is she a single mother?
When your sister got withdrawn, she soaked herself in church, do you know why?.... Let me tell you why. She believes that pastors, she thought God or what ever imaginary being you guys are worshipping would help her. But her situation only for worst. You knew something was wrong with her but you thought since she has gotten closer to God by being religious, everything was okay.
But she got worst and you had to take her to a psychiatrist.
But I just hope you don't have your own mentel issues because, you don't sound normal to me.

You forgot how the illness gradually started, how it got worst and how it got treated and you think an imaginary being helped your sister.... Please can you take some time out and visit a psychiatrist yourself? Do this before your case gets worst.

Why do you hate God?
The said sister's problem started gradually, and I still believe the op hasn't told us the root cause of her depression. It is not only a psychiatrist that could have handled her case; a brother, sister, mum, dad, or a true friend could have discerned that all wasn't well with her.
There was nothing wrong with pastor coming to her case, but must be a pastor that cares and can see.
Any of these that were close to her could have arrested the situation earlier on if they had paid attention to her changed mood. And the op has learnt his lessons from that. Some psychiatrists don't even know what to do because they lack caring heart.
The lesson is that we must care for people around us. This caring would lead to observing them whenever there is a change in attitudes and getting closer to them with love for them to trust us enough to open up on what has been disturbing their minds.

Although the thread never saw the frontpage, the little advice and prayers I got from the few who commented were more than enough to push me through.

It's over a year now and I'm delighted to share the testimony of how my sister was delivered from insanity. True to the comment of one of the God-sent Nairalanders on the previous thread, my sister had been battling with depression for a while and was trying to use religion as a succour. Her sudden withdrawal from everyone was a sign of depression but we mistook it for trying to be closer to God. To cut the long story short, the climax of the whole experience was on the 10th of January 2015 at about 11:05pm. Earlier that evening, my sister returned from church and was muttering some incoherent words to herself that made me really suspicious but she acted normal. Even when I asked her questions, she answered very well. Mum had retired to bed and I was in my room reading comments/advice from the previous thread about her issue. I heard strange noises from the sitting room/kitchen but I assumed my sister was probably trying to clean up the dishes and return some other stuff like water into the fridge. I was very wrong. Not until I heard a loud bang that I jumped up from bed and ran to the sitting room, what I saw shocked me to my marrows. Right there was my sister with a knife in one hand and an electric kettle on the other (it was with these she made the loud bang), her clothes (the one my mum gave her to wear) were torn to shreds & she was almost completely unclad. She had torn the sofa with the knife, pulled out a wall lamp by force, poured out all the contents of the standing fridge and chest freezers, torn open the bag of rice, smashed all the crates of egg on the wall, went to the store and poured the cement I kept on herself, sliced the yams, fishes and potatoes in the kitchen, poured disinfectant all over the kitchen, bursted open the bag of garri, shredded a part of the matress in her room & even tore the wrapper her little daughter who feel asleep while watching cartoon in the palour used to cover herself, infact a part of the house was upside down.

I couldn't believe all that happened while I was fully awake in my room (though my door was shut & the sound system was quite loud). At this time, my mum woke up and joined me in the sitting room. I quickly grabbed the knife and kettle from her and locked her arms to her back in a bid to overpower her. Mum was praying and crying and even slipped (because the mixture of rice grains, water, smashed eggs, turkey wings/laps, tomato paste etc made the tiles very slippery and difficult to walk on. We were confused on who to call or how to manage the situation. I tried asking her what was wrong with her and why she turned the house upside down, her response was that she was looking for her academic credentials (she had earlier burnt all her credentials). When my sister realized I won't release her arms, she was becoming aggressive. She was saying all sort of meaningless things and begging me to release her to go outside. She kept seeing all the cartoon characters on TV as herself and even thought the grains of rice scattered on the floor were a multitude of people.

By the grace of God, a doctor was able to sedate her by 12:37am. By that time, I was exhausted, frustrated, scared, shocked and sad. I just couldn't find the right words to console my mum. She was devastated. Needless to say we could not sleep till dawn. Each time my sister woke up from her deep sleep, we got scared of what her next reaction will be. It took days and extra hands to clean up the mess in the house. To shorten the story, after pastors came to the house to pray, we took her to a psychiatric hospital and she was on drugs for months till her condition improved. Today, she is doing very well and even works with a multinational organisation (through the help of a friend).

I learnt several lessons from this sad event which I'll like to share:

It is with a heavy heart and rile arising from my disappointment in a failed union called NIGERIAN LABOUR CONGRESS (NLC), I write this piece.
Summarily, it is my opinion that the activities and functions of our trade union is but not limited to these highlighted points briefly itemized below (culled from the NLC website);
1. Political role, using collective power to influence decisions on behalf of members and the wider society;
2. Market role, by intervention wage bargaining and thus impacting on the economy;
3. Regulatory role by setting standards in relation to jobs and terms and conditions;
4. Democratizing role, in creating industrial democracy at the workplace;
5. Service role, in promoting the intervention of members;
6. Enhancement role in helping to develop the human potential of members; and
7. Welfare role in providing assistance to particular groups.

This well written and articulated roles expressed above by the NLC is only but a mirage to the Nigerian worker as majority are yet to see this in action due largely to the gross neglect of duties and corruption prevalent in the union
I deduced the primary responsibility of the Union should be there to protect the rights and interest of the Nigerian worker but this is hardly the case. The Nigerian worker is exposed to all forms of exploitation and injustice.
The Labour union has simply failed in its duties.
This has placed the Nigerian worker in a state of hopelessness and perpetual agitation and this is a ticking time bomb and a revolution is imminent if something is not done to ameliorate this.
I know of a particular instance where the NLC was invited to mediate some dispute between Nigerian workers and their Indian employers in one of these Indian owned establishment (MSTORE INVESTMENT LIMITED No 54, Adeniyi Jones, Beside Zenith bank, Ikeja, Lagos). The company operates in different names so as to evade tax and basic responsibilities. After series of correspondence and calls, when the NLC eventually came, they met with the management, collected huge sums of money as bribes and left without any recourse to the Nigerian workers who invited them initially. This begs the question, is it Nigeria that is a failed state or the people in power disrupting the peace and unity of the Nation. It is often said, that Nigerians are the problems of other Nigerians.
The rate by which these so- called Indian, Chinese and Lebanese owned companies in the Nation keep on exploiting and using Nigerian workers in a distraught and dehumanizing manner can be said to be another form of slavery. The seemingly quietness and neglect by the Nigerian government and workers union is a great cause for concern for all. Coupled with the low level of unemployment and underemployment in the nation that has given these Firms the leeway to exploit and treat Nigerians workers and graduates like poo.
Going through different write-ups and articles on the treatment of Nigerians by these Indians and so called Lebanese (a typical example LACASERA) you will notice, they see themselves as better humans, bringing in their racist and discriminating orientation into the Nigerian work space.
This should stop before a revolution will take place and Nigerians will stand and fight for what is theirs.
I happened to have worked in one of these Indian owned company with a staff strength of over 2200 people of which over one-third of the workers are unqualified Indian ‘expatriates’ imported into the country to do jobs, Nigerians ordinarily should handle. What is baffling is that, most of these Indians in the company come into the country without requisite work permit and proper documentation, thereby violating the Constitution, yet they are mainly placed above the so called BSc/MSc graduates with adequate qualifications and work experience. Fine, there is no problem with that since it’s an Indian company the management has the right to employ and appoint people who they deem fit into positions in the company but this should not be at the detriment of Nigerian workers. The rights of workers in these so called Indian company is often being violated and trampled upon on a daily basis. Most of these injustices is in the form of; poor remuneration- graduates earning less than 50k, no leave allowance, no pension scheme, very limited health cover when available, casualization of workers, absence of job security, no increment, arbitrary sacking with no compensation whatsoever, irregular salary expatriates are paid Local and then foreign salary , no promotions, no profit sharing, maltreatment of staff and total disdain and disregard for the Nigerian Labour Law which they continually contravene again and again other unwholesome practices includes cutting of cost, tax avoidance and evasion, declaring false financial position and statements.
Nigeria failed? Or the so called NLC that is supposed to protect and help in the wellness of the conditions of workers in the country.
I want to implore the new Minister of Labour, Sen Chris Ngige, to kindly look into this, as a matter of urgency, meet with the various workers union (which have so far failed in their responsibilities) and set up a fact finding committee that will make recommendations that will (probably lead to legislations) adequately address these issues.
For the sake of the sanity of many Nigerian youth. Something must be done NOW. We cannot continue to remain slaves in our father’s land.

Before Buhari came to power, he spoke on a radio programme monitored in Kaduna concerning GEJ 's handling of the Boko Haram insurgency. He claimed that during the time of MEND, Yaradua called the Niger Delta boys to Abuja and negotiated with them, but when it started to happen in the North, GEJ used war planes to bomb them.
Following his philosophy from above, what stops Buhari from calling IPOB leaders to Abuja, and negotiate with them for peace to reign?

For your info, citizens have the right to air their view on the state of the nation. One can hold the view that Nigeria should be disintegrated, and another that we should merge with other Africans to form a bigger nation. So long as such views are not injurious to other people, one is free to hold ones view.
Why do you see it as anathema the discussion of whether Nigeria is going to continue as one nation or not ? Many nations have disintegrated, and even peacefully. Sudan and South Sudan, the former USSR, Kuwait from Iraq, name them. And recently Scotland held a referendum to either become a sovereign state or remain one with the UK. Even Ireland broke away from the UK.

The people at Guatanamo bay were captured in the war front. Since the war has not ended releasing them would only be counterproductive to the war effort.
On a second note, if the US court had ordered their release and the government feels otherwise, what the government should have done is to re-approach the court with the reason why they can't be released, so that the court would vacate its earlier order.

you can't fight corruption by outright and deliberate violation of the rule of law most especially as the number one citizen of this country. it's totally illegal, illogical and even corrupt to do that. you need to become a monster in the process of trying to fight a monster.if you feel the system is permitting corrupt elements to go scot free for their corrupt deeds, the best option is to sponsor a reform in our laws to block those loop holes so that it will no longer be exploited and in the process all corrupt element will be brought to book through the rule. By so doing you've succeeded in creating a system that checks future corruption. What The Washington post is concerned about is that it is the judiciary that have the power to interpret laws. Hence the judges have ruled that they could be granted bail, a democratic government should obey court order. Unless we are no longer in democracy.

A step below President Buhari's present level of high-handedness only brings us back to the era of impunity that we voted Jonathan out for.
Nigerians are very forgetful of the past. Nigeria, under the watch of the Fmr President, could not successful keep terror suspects in custody because prosecutors failed to prepare a case. We had a system where court orders and injunctions stalled corruption cases and made a mockery of our fight to defeat corruption and insecurity across the country. This time, we have an executive that is willing to stretch its constitutional powers to keep Nigeria safe and recoup stolen fund, yet we're starting to paint the President as a dictator.

Kanu is a threat to our national security. In advanced societies, suspects are detained for issues as trivial as traffic offence to keep them in custody while a stronger case is put together, why must Nigeria be different? Societies with strong intelligence communities engage whatever means is takes to keep terrorists and extremists out of circulation, must ours be different? Indeed, there are global concerns with regards to ethical issues in national security and intelligence activities of nations; developing countries should not be singled out as if we are the only ones involved in such. Indeed, the primary responsibility of government is to ensure its people live neither in fear of terrorism, external aggression nor poverty and other factors that undermine their peace and safety while it also sustains the fundamental rights of its people. However, many advanced nations have passed through periods of national crisis when liberties were exchanged for greater security, the balance between both being restored after such crisis, and Nigeria is at that point right now.

Within the last 10-15 years, advanced nations have defied international charters against enhanced interrogation techniques, illegal rendition, detention without trial and all sort of measures all for the sake of national security. We have not resorted to this yet you're starting to paint us as bad. We have not rendered our terror suspects to Niger, as you did render yours to Egypt for torture, we have not built illegal detention facilities in Chad, as you've done in Cuba, Kanu has not accused our security agents of subjecting him to waterboarding as you've done to many of yours, so what is the fury about? We understand you did what was necessary for the safety of innocent people, just as President Buhari is doing the same. Nnamdi Kanu's illegal entrance into the country with equipment for the purpose of undermining our national security is enough to get us worried, and get a responsible President to act.

On the NIMASA ex-DG and Arms thieves, I doubt if there is any law in Nigeria or anywhere in the world that restrains the authorities from re-arresting a suspect on different charges after he/she has been granted bail on others. Hence, we do not have to blame the President for identifying measures within our laws to use against corrupt public office holders just to keep them from jumping bail. We had a soft-spoken, gentle-looking President whose lame duck attitude cost us $2.1 billion meant for the war on terror and drove us where we are today, but we have moved on. Now we have a stronger, more willing leader in President Buhari and the best we can do is support him to do whatever is right and just to keep us on the path of prosperity and security again.

As Nigerians we must understand that security is a collective task that requires the mutual cooperation of every citizen, and the understanding that our liberties will not be compromised as long as we remain law abiding and do not act in ways that endanger others, as Dasuki Sambo and his partners are alleged to have done to our soldiers and our countrymen up North. We need to understand that a man that literally sneaked into the country using unconventional methods can sneak out using same methods; that we lack the intelligence capability to keep tabs on all suspects, and just like in past cases, corrupt public office holders may escape justice by choosing not to return to Nigeria if they are allowed to pursue whatever medical excuses abroad and extradition is not as easy as it appears. We are protected as law-abiding citizens, and we have in President Buhari what we have always desired, a strong man with great political will to frustrate corrupt public office holders, a step below President Buhari's present level of high-handedness only brings us back to the era of impunity.

I agree with you that not everyone is qualified to raise a child. From your comments, it appears that you already have firsthand information concerning the whole saga. Please, address this issue : an arrangement was made for her to keep the baby with Davido's sis, while the mum continues to have access to her. But along the line, Davido's family started doing her hide-and-seek, to the extent that the baby would be taken to the US without even informing the mum. If there was no selfishness on Davido's part, why leave the mum in the dark concerning his intention of taking the baby to the US?
And, I have been seeing comments like 'gold-digger ' this and that? And I ask : are you 100% sure that the lady in question is a gold-digger? People could fall in love not because of money but of the artistry of the spouse.
For example, in Igbo traditional society, a fine lady could pack and go to live with a famous village wrestler or fighter.

That's not the heart of God. Your baby is your responsibility to take care of ; you're not doing them a favour by taking care of your own blood. Have you considered the consequences of the girl growing up without the mum? First, she won't be close to the mum again. It's so much.
