Am from Isinweke. Isinweke is the food basket of Imo state. Isinweke was the former site of Imo state University Etiti under Mbakwe's regime. Isinweke was the last Abode of Ojukwu before he fled Biafra. Isinweke was the base of Biafra refinery and was never troubled by the enemy forces. Some of our festivals are: Iwa Akwa, Mbom Uzo, Oturukwekwe and Agu-Okonko. Some interesting places to visit in Isinweke are: Abadaba lake, Oturugo stream, Biafran Bunker at Madonna, etc. Also are Uboma rice farm, Nwaoku paper mill and the Famous headquaters of Etiti division. |
Oji (kola nut) a unique aspect of Igbo culture.

Congrats to Nigeria and Nwaokolo. This indeed is an independence present to Nigeria. Hope rising. |
Indeed, Song is a great Lion. |
Surely, he must die. |
Abagworo:You can clearly see that Agbontaen's opinion does not reflect the opinion of most Ikas who are proud Igbo. Thanks Abagworo. |
The Nri civilization have been the most important agencies in the evolution Igbo society until about the 15th century when other influences e.g Benin empire originating from outside started affecting the trend of Igbo affairs. The Benin monarchy about the 15th century was transformed from a small kingdom into an aggresively expansive empire. This change is said to have taken place in the reign of Ewuare the Great. Under his command the Benin armies extended their conguests beyond Edo regions, subjugating towns and villages of Ekiti, Ikare, IkaIgbo and some western Igbo. From this time, the Bini power became a factor of great consequence in the life of the Western Igbo. Though Binin subjugation and influence was great in the area, it never amounted to permanent subjugation and regular administration. As a result, everywhere in the Ika Igbo region micro-cosmic versions of Benin kingdom, court ceremonials and institutions, title systems and political terminology were adopted or imposed. This later Benin impact came to overlay the earlier Nri culture among the IkaIgbo. |
@Agbotaen: Point of correction. Ika is not a kingdom. In Ika, you have different kingdoms, e.g Agbor, Owa etc. |
@the poster: I say Yes. |
Let us hope the federal government will investigate how the security agents disrupted the conference in Owerri, and to ensure that those behind such anti-democratic act are duly exposed and punished to serve as a deterrent. |
ACN condemns disruption of Igbo summit Published on 30 September 2010 with 1 comments [Post a Comment] The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has strongly condemned the disruption of Mondays Igbo political stakeholders conference in Owerri, Imo State, describing it as a clear threat to the countrys democracy and the organisation of free, fair and credible elections next year. Democracy thrives on freedom to associate and hold opinions, take that freedom away, and you will be setting the stage for the collapse of that cherished system of government, the party said in a statement issued in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. It said from published reports of how security operatives stormed the venue on the basis of the so-called order from above, it was clear that some powerful people were behind the disruption. Who has the powers to deploy security operatives for such operations? Who could order the management of the Concorde Hotel, which is state-owned, not to allow the meeting to hold? it queried. ACN blamed the development on the fact that things have fallen apart in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the party prepares to implode over the issue of zoning. Apparently, those opposed to the meeting felt it might not be in favour of the trend in the partys hierarchy to favour certain candidates over others, hence the decision to scuttle it. We shed no tears for a party that has chosen to self-destruction. But we must warn against any temptation to resort to Gestapo tactics just to stifle opinions considered unfavourable to certain interests. We are worried that the prevailing environment, just like what obtained when a serving ministers residence was stormed by armed soldiers reportedly searching for illegal arms and ammunition in Delta state recently - may not allow the success of the forthcoming general elections, if left unchecked, the party said. While there is yet no evidence linking the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan to the show of shame in Owerri, ACN advised the President not to tow the anarchic line of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who used undemocratic tactics to stifle all dissenting opinions during his tenure. It said people must be allowed to gather freely to discuss issues of interest to them, without such gatherings being disrupted by security agents. We therefore call on the federal government to investigate how the security agents disrupted the conference in Owerri, and to ensure that those behind such anti-democratic act are duly exposed and punished to serve as a deterrent, ACN said. http://www.champion.com.ng/displaycontent.asp?pid=747 |
And how many of them tagged it as some kind of emancipation celebration ? As in ijaw day, hausa day yoruba day, itsekiri day ? What you showed me is just an association celebration of their culture in a meery manner not political.ohanaeze is a more or less a political movement.
Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo is not a political movement but a socio-cultural organisation. The link I showed you highlights the fact that other Nigerian groups do celebrate their own days. So accept defeat mr stubborn. I have attended a yourubal cultural festival (sort of Yoruiba day) in Suleja some years back. Also I attended Tiv association Day in Gwagwalada Abuja, April this year. Hence, allow Ndigbo to exercise their freedom of association which is their fundamental human right. |

MetalGong4:No one elected him. He even testified to this fact sometime ago. He has let me down greatly. |
http://www.champion.com.ng/displaycontent.asp?pid=756 @Bluetooth: Click the link above and read through to understand that apart from Ndigbo, other Nigerian ethnic groups do celebrate their own days. I wonder where you were on the day brains were created. Perhaps you came late. |
Enugu was so important that it soon overshadowed what was its administrative capital-Udi, and by 1929 Enugu had become important enough to be made the headquaters of the Southern Provinces. |
agbotaen:Mind you, it is against forum rules to type in capital letters. The same linguists who established Itshekiri as an ethnic group could not do it on Ika because Ika is but Igbo. This your fight is like flogging a dead horse. You should occupy your mind with issues bothering the entire Delta Igbo. It is a mischief on the Ika internet warriors to be making futile efforts at establishing Ika as an ethnic group. For example when the non Igbo groups in Delta state were fighting for the relocation of Delta state capital from Asaba, the Ika internet warriors did not care about it. I am one of the Igbo sons who countered their motions and campaigns in the media. While that campaign was going on, Kunirum Ossai and other anti Igbo from Ikaland were busy fighting any one who calls them Igbo. What a shame. |

Has Ohakim done the right thing?. |
http://allafrica.com/stories/201009300690.html http://allafrica.com/stories/201009300690.html September 2010 ________________________________________ Abuja — Governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State yesterday said the shut down of Concorde Hotel, scheduled to be the venue of the South-East Political Stakeholders Summit last Monday, was occasioned by a security report which indicated that the hotel was targeted to be razed down. While he admitted knowledge of the lock out, he said that he informed those scheduled to attend the meeting in the interest of their security to either relocate the venue of the meeting or postpone it, noting that the lock out was not in any way political or vindictive. Speaking at the conference organised by LEADERSHIP newspaper yesterday, Gov Ohakim said that in his capacity as the leader of the state, he assented to the lockdown move because if he had allowed any Igbo leader to be hurt he would have been dead politically. Reacting however, the secretary of Igbo Political Forum, and one of those who were locked out of the hotel, Chyna Nwanyanwu, questioned why the state government refused to arrest the culprits after it knew about the arson plans. He asked the governor to say the truth about what transpired. The governor said "now what is every where today is Igbo leaders, locked out in Owerri. Anything that concerns Ohakim makes headline. There was no order from above and there was no order from below. The locked up or locked out was not political or vindictive. As days go by, the truth will come out and it will make me more popular. "If you look at today's papers starting from LEADERSHIP, it states that President orders for the rescue of school children, what you would have seen this morning is that President orders the rescue of Igbo leaders kidnapped in Owerri or President mourns the death of Igbo leaders attending conference in the capital of Imo State. Which one would you have preferred?. "I would not tell you that Ikedi Ohakim did not know that people were prevented from meeting If I say that I am not fit to be the Governor of Imo State, I knew about it and I did inform those involved for their own safety that they needed to relocate or postpone the meeting. "That was the advise of the leader of the state and the leader of the security in the state. Those who were matching to burn down Concord Hotel, an investment of over N5 million and today the value of that hotel will not be less than N20 million and if they had burnt it down, they had burnt the asset of Imo State and if I left any of the Igbo leaders to be killed or hurt, I am finished politically," he said. He however commend the security people for "rising up to that challenge and prevented that investment from been burnt down" even as he apologized "to our Igbo leaders, my fathers, brothers and uncles who suffered that inconvenience and that inconvenience was for their safety when their inquiry comes out people will know the truth and that is last comment I will make on the issue." Political heavy weights of Igbo extraction had scheduled to meet at the famous hotel to chart the course of the region ahead of the 2011 election, but they were stunned when they were denied entry into the hotel. Admits speculations of political scheming, the presidency distanced itself from the lock down of the hotel. Copyright © 2010 Leadership. All rights reserved. Hatitude:Stop chatting crap little fry, why not go to owners of the park and ask them for a copy of the receipt. Nigeria is what it is today because people like you turn logic upside down. Be sensible. |
Ihe afo soro saa nnama, onweghi ka oga eji ha ka ewu. No matter how diarrhoea affects a cow, the cow will never diminish in size to that of a goat. |
excanny:You should also comfirm why Obi of Akumazi (now late) and some Ika Obis traveelled to Asaba nov 2008 to elect Amb Ralph Uwaechue as President gen Ohanaeze Ndigbo. You should also comfirm why the college of education Agbor has one of the best depts of Igbo language in Nigeria. You should also confirm at what time Ikas hired linguist to teach them Igbo language. You should also confirm why Ikas do not speak Bini despite the proximity to Benin. |
sonya4all:I have always maintained that traces of ancestral history is not a determinant factor for some Ikas to disclaim Igbo. The city of London was founded by the Romans who called it Londinium. Yet Londoners are proud English people. So the case of Bini fouders of Ika has and will always be defeated. There is no type of research that you guys will carry out that will be better than that done by Onwuejeogwu. Onwuejeogwu mind you, is an Igbo from Delta state. For over 20 years of his research, he came to the conclusion that Ika people are Igbo people. For the fact the few non Igbo are very vocal on the net does not mean they speak for the entire IkaIgbo. |
idupaul:I spit on this stupendous thread of yours. I thought you will offer solutions on how to overcome the problem in Aba, instead you are here making irrelevant and moronic post. |
@Agbotaen: You have established your fact long time ago that you are not Igbo, we do not have any problem with that. I even personally asked you if you required assistance from me to relocate to Binin. My message to you is that you should live the Ikas alone who intend to identify as Igbo. You can not speak for over 300,000 Ikas. Secondly, you should work towards efforts that will see an Anioma man become governor of Delta state come 2011. Coming to nairaland to twist your history so as to make Ika non-Igbo has failed immensely. You even twisted Dein Ikenchukwu's name to whatever I do not know in an attempt to rile the Igbo. Hence, why not attempt my options to you as your fallacies has always been dictated and severely dealt with. |
[b]Idu lua Nwunnye On the appointed date the brides family prepare large quantity of food for the in-laws and visitors. The items are displayed while negotiations for the bride price follow with dialogue; thus: the brides the family may ask such questions after presenting the visitors with kolanut and drinks on their arrival. What is your mission? We saw a beautiful flower or udara (cherry) and we want her to be the one to be giving food to our son. (He is introduced). The groom is asked Will you be able to look after her? he replies yes. He is asked again Are you sure- definitely sure. If you see her can you identify her? and he replies again Yes. After which a mock negotiation ensues like this The bride price is one million/five million naira. OK, we will pay ten million. The mock negotiation goes on for a while, before the bride is asked by the leader of Umu-Adas (married women from the brides family) if she was prepared to marry the man. If the answer is in affirmative she reports back to the group. The bridegrooms family presents the specified bride price. Normally N10, 000.00 is presented contained in an envelop after other monetary obligations have been met. The spokes man from the brides family shows the elders the money, depending on the family between N1,000.00 to N3,000.00 is taken and the balance is given back to the bride grooms family. They are asked to start life with it for the young couple. The above paste highlights the fact that Ika is not different from other Igbo groups. |
amazonia:Let's be realistic. Etsako and Bini people do not speak the same language and have never done so. You as a Bini person, do you understand Etsako?. It is a pity that you have not heard about Western Igbo massacre by Nigerian soldiers and Oba Akenzua's role. This is an arguement you can not win. Even in Orhiwowon L. G.A IN Edo state, you have Igbankes who are more Igbo than Bini. True or false?. |
He deserves to die, if at all he was responsible for the crime. |
Ukwuani, Ukwuala, Ukwuana, Ukwuali etc is no other group than Igbo. In the formation years of Igbo Union, Ukwuani leaders such as Hon Frank Oputa and Hon Oki played active roles in this organisation. The Ukwuani then clearly identified with their Igbo kins. The Nigerian crisis of the late sixties did not help matters. Some began to question their Identities, others came up with ideas of making Ukwuani a distinct ethnic group, while some still maintained their Igboness. But lately Igbo consciousness is high in Ukwuani areas. It is interesting to note that at the last Ohanaeze organised Igbo day in Owerri 2009, most of their Obis were in attendance. I have also seen increasing numbers of Ukwuanis here in Nairaland identify as Igbo or Delta Igbo. |
