CultureRe: Edo Language Now Compulsory In Edo Schools by AndreUweh(m): 9:43pm On Oct 18, 2010
PhysicsMHD:
Who said Etsakos speak Bini? Who said anyone will make Ishan children learn Bini? Stop insinuating something for which there is no evidence on the ground. Bini's could not even force their particular dialect on other groups or did not want to force their particular dialect on other groups within and outside of the present Edo state during the time of the Benin kingdom not to talk of later when there is ethnic and cutural consciousness amongst even the smallest groups in Nigeria.

You do realize the governor that made it compulsory for "Edo language" to be taught in all schools is an Etsako, right?

Uneme, Etsako, Ishan, etc. children will learn their languages if there are qualified individuals available to teach them in the schools.

But the idea of Edo state sponsoring the teaching of an Igboid language has as much chance of happening as Ondo state sponsoring the teaching of an Edoid language or Akwa Ibom sponsoring the teaching of an Ijoid language. There's absolutely no political force that can make it happen unless the concerned individuals of such groups in those states do it for themselves in their particular areas and the reason for this has been spelled out clearly in my previous post.
Would you support Bini to be thought in Igbanke villages?.

@Maimalari: Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo is not an association of 5,000 people. It is the all encompassing association of over 40 million Igbo people worldwide.

Abagworo:
The Igbo you hear people speak in many areas around Imo and Anambra are not actually the peoples dialect but a centralised form of Igbo with little surviving part of their actual dialect. The actual dialects are strange and little is remembered about them. The reason is because they are more travelled and prefer a language they can communicate with every other Igbo.
Well said.

Also why is Oji IGBO very scarce?.

In Igbo culture, gworo is only served in the absence of Oji Igbo.
CultureRe: Edo Language Now Compulsory In Edo Schools by AndreUweh(m): 6:48pm On Oct 18, 2010
The in thing is: Bini for Binis. Ishan for Ishans, Etsako for Etsakos and Igbo for Igbos.
Anambra state is 98.5 Igbo. The 0.4 Igalas in that state speak Igbo fluently and do not have any problem with Igbo language.
Unlike in Edo state where Igbankes do not speak Bini or in Etsako areas where the natives do not speak Bini.

@Chyz: The Igbo in Edo has 8 large communities compared to less than 3,000 Igala fishermen on the bank of the Great River.
I have not met any Igbanke-Igbo claiming to be Bini.
CultureRe: Edo Language Now Compulsory In Edo Schools by AndreUweh(m): 9:55pm On Oct 17, 2010
chyz:
They have a right to promote Edo language without another. In anambra the same thing happened with the compulsory of Igbo language in its school; however, there are indigenous igala in anambra so what about them and there language? I guess you typed this because of Igbankes, remember they say they are bini so that is there own business. When bendel state was being split they wanted to go with their "bini brothers" and not with the Igbos now they are crying they want anioma state and marginalization. Now igbanke and ika are "the same" but it wasnt the case until they felt the fiery of their silly utterance and decision.

LONG LIVE THE EDO CULTURE!
Igbanke people do not say they are Binis. They do not speak Bini. It will be wrong to impose Bini on them. Merging Igbankes into the proposed Anioma state is a welcomed idea.

If this is the case, then they must let an Igbo socio-political organization do that; not a socio-cultural one. It's out of place.
Hmm. . . So, Ohanaeze has since been a political group, masquerading as a socio-cultural organization?
Don't get it wrong Nenye.
Igbo Union cum Ohanaeze have never been a political group and will never be. They do not field candidates for elective posts in Nigeria. They do not have a political party nor a manifesto.
But they are a pressure group.

@ topic

i dont see why not.
Three have since joined the group. Can you imagine that one of them from Andoni, speaks Igbo fluently despite the fact she has never lived in Igboland nor had had Igbo parents.
In the past, we use to record scores of non Igbos who come as observers until last year when some Kalabaris declared their intentions of joining the group.
PoliticsRe: 2011: Ohanaeze Backs Jonathan by AndreUweh(m): 12:04pm On Oct 17, 2010

I think they are on a mission to resurrect the Igbo State Union but of course under the name Ohanaeze. Which isn't a bad Idea if handled right. The Igbo State Union was one of the most feared political/socio-cultural organizations in Nigeria. We are at a time where Igbo so-called "leaders" are selling us out for their own interest which is Presidency. To me, Igbos don't need to be focusing on presidency, it is not important at the moment. They need to be focusing on unity such as banding connecting igbo businesses together economically, building a strong political front for the Igbo, protection of all means for the Igbo ,in every part of Nigeria physical protection(arms) and Legal protection, et al. It seems that Ohanaeze is on that path. If they did endorse him it would have been out of Igbo interest and not out of the desperate need of an Igbo president.
The Igbo state Union is not dead, it is this same Ohanaeze you hear everyday. Igbo state union was banned by Ironsi regime as well as other cultural associations. But in 1970, Dennis Osadebe and others regrouped and renamed the association Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo.
Oha (Igbo people)--represented by Uwaechue.
Ndieze (the Kings) represented by Obi Chike Edozien.
It is similar to British model of House of the lords and house of the commons.
I do remember ASUU when banned resurfaces as AASU OR ASU etc.

rubi:
What is the difference b/w oji igbo and oji gworo?
Gworo is more reddish in clolour or oxblood some are white in colour.
Oji Igbo is creamy and some are not that reddish in colour.
Oji Igbo is used for rituals, for marriages, title takings, offering or prayers at traditional ceremonies, to welcome visitors and to introduce very important discussions and requests.
Oji Igbo has many lobes.
Oji Igbo is more expensive e.g if a basket of gworo is N2,000, that of oji igbo is N2,800.
