This is just coming in PROCUREMENT NEWS: NIGERIAN AIR FORCE EXPECTING START-UP DELIVERIES OF 2(nos) SUKHOI SU-25 FROGFOOT GROUND ATTACK JETS FROM UKRAINE IN 2013; ADDITIONAL ACQUISITIONS OF 3(Nos) Mi-35P HIND ATTACK HELICOPTERS AND 6(Nos) Mi-171SH TERMINATOR ASSAULT HELICOPTERS FROM RUSSIA REPORTED – SIPRI DATA
“We got away with being the first Airforce to deploy Alpha Jet for combat on account of the ingenuity and ‘suicidal dive bombing’ of our gallant NAF pilots.
The ideal, since we controlled airfields in Liberia and Sierra Leone and attacked from Calabar into the Bakassi Peninsula, would have been to use the hardy and COIN-dedicated Su-25 Frogfoot. We simply either refuse to learn lessons or our FG are too ‘clench-fisted’.
It is possible to grab three Frogfoots from Russian surplus stocks for US$20m today. Even the Chadians, with rebels wheeling technicals everywhere, have since acquired six Frogfoots. That for me would be the ideal for in-country operations…hard armour-plating,decent combat radius.” https://www.arcair.com/Gal2/1301-1400/Gal1302_SU-25A_Hui/02.jpg Can some one please tell me wich one is nigeria looking at. |

agaugust: your mathematics is poor. combat range 1,800km with 20,000 lb load. reduce load down to 3,000 lb and carry several drop tanks, range is greatly extended. ferry range without drop tanks is 3,700km and that is less than the 3,500km distance calabar to pretoria. now add fuel in drop tanks to increase the ferry range above 3,700km and president jacob zuma is no longer s.afe with his four wives in south africa. leopards p.ursue him. agaugust: so you want everybody on this forum to go to the streets and start searching for bookshops to buy Guiness Book of world record to confirm that south african GV6 artillery has range 100km ? yet you did not tell us the year edition of the book, they change and update it yearly. your own sources are so confusing and hard to find, yet you demand that i should post my own sources. to be honest with you, i did not post my source on the flying leopard, L-15, and ZBD-97 to satisfy you south africans, i dont care what you guys say anymore. rather i posted the source only to please my fellow nigerians and that's all.
my naija colleague sheyie posted source for L-15 jets yesterday sunday on page 107, and it is a Russian news paper. his own source weblink is
http://mdb.cast.ru/mdb/3-2012/item2/article1/?form=print
my source also agrees with his own source on L-15 jets, so that makes good proof. anyone who is not satisfied with those can travel to china by himself and find source to quote. i dont care one bit, i tell you south africans again, i say i dont care one bit. It has not been beaten so any year would do. I never doubted the L15. I doubt the lepoard. China is never shy to make public her arms salles yet there has been report on the lepaords sale. |

Henry120: I agree with you 100% on this. These south africans on this thread are funny people. They keep going on and on about how that total mess of a rooivalk is a success while that helicopter is a massive failure.
Your neighbours in southern africa would not even contemplate looking at it twice not to talk of buying. If that helo is a good as you claim, the crase over MI-35p's on the continent would have reduced, as we know that we can get an homegrown equipment, that can suit our needs.
The cost of that obsolete equipment is just crazy, that pile of junk costs more than an apache and the MI-35p respectively and it is 20 times less effective than the aforementioned. How has it faild Non are in the market for a new built attack chopper. Most could not affoard 1 How is it obsoliet. Please do tell me since it hase every thing the supper hind has. pleep: First explain to me how you guys thought it was smart to begin building a completely new aircraft platform in the middle of a war... There was no logical way the project would have been complete in time for the fighting.
Hell... its almost 20 years to late.
Unless Denel and the S.A government are completely r.etarded yall intended that vehicle for export, and in that you failed miserably.
You say the Rooivalk performs better in harsh conditions, says who? unlike your helicopter, the Apache has actually been combat tested in the Gulf war where it performed brilliantly after modification. It has also been used in Isreal, Egypt and Saudi Arabia with no problems. What has the Rooivalk ever done except sit in a hanger?
And btw the Rooivalk is a flying target for the Longbow system and the Apaches hellfire missles. You have no way to escape them, and the U.S will not license the tech to Denel. (another reason why no country will waste money on a Rooivalk)
Even if Boeing is unable to sell Apaches to 3rd world countries, they are selling 100's to the biggest buyer in the world. The U.S government with its 650 billion dollar defense budget. The Apache is a huge sucess, the Rooivalk is a huge failure.
Accept it and move on. All of our wepaons where built during the war. It was a very long war tracing it roots to the 60s and even though SA puulled out in the early 90s it only really ended in 2003. It all so took long to develop due to it's budget being decreased after the war. Do you not under stand the meaning of sanctions. We could not buy or sell any milltatry wepoans. The rooifalk was never ment to be sold. We tried to sell it but only because the production line was open and turkey wanted a helicopter. First the longbow is for ground targets. Second the mokap out ranges the hellfire and has a biger war head. Thirds they both AGMs fourth the rooifalk has 2 wingtip hard points for anti air missies, fith the rooifalk has a low radarcross section and heat signture. No new apachy has been built for some time. I don't think you grasp what the rooifalk was about or any wepaon for that mattter. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by andrewza: 10:39pm On Mar 18, 2013 |
pleep: Your report came out like 4 days ago. As of today only 12 are in service.
Basically you guys spent almost 30 years and billions of dollars to make an aircraft that is more expensive than its superior competitors. Who would buy a Rooivalk when they could get an Apache? The only reason why your government uses this (slighty) inferior product is because it is home-grown, but the quality of your defense force will suffer for it.
This is a failure no matter how you want to paint it. South africa managed to salvage the mess, but its still a failure Actually in africa it is a better product by far. With full intergrated dust and sand fillters. Engiens optermised for hot and dry air. Greater combat range The thing is no one is buying new apachys either. Actualy the last country to buy a new production attack chopper was turky. The rest build them selfs or get hand me downs. All so since the rooifalk led to the supper hind a comicial succses and that all current rooifalk are operationl it is has not been a waist of money. Remember when the rooifalk was started SA had no option but to build in house and to have cancelled the product would have been the true waist of money. |

pleep: We waste 1 billion dollars each year importing rediculous military hardware that we will never use. What do we need mobile artillery and apache gunships for? boko-haram?
If the Nigerian military didn't have underdeveloped chicken brains they would realize that you need infrastructure to win a war. South Africa has it we don't. That $1 billion should be invested into building indegenous military engines, support systems and factories so if real conflict broke out we could actually service all these weapons in combat.
All this spending you guys are posting stupidity... Nigeria is a country that doesn't even have 24/7 hour electricity, how do you expect to service a FBC-1A Flying Leopard II! with a fuckin generator? I will leave the nigerians to comment on this. It will be fun. |

pleep: Dude. The air beetle, seriously
I love my people, but i'm sorry that is a joke. The air beetle is a homebuilt kit aircraft that teenagers in the united states make in their garage for science projects!
and to make matters worse it was designed by van, a foreign company, not even by Nigerian technology.
As for the armoured personnel carriers they are just Toyotas with extra armor melded on. The chasies, powertrain, engine etc was made in foreign countries. Look at this thing, its a joke! https://www.nairaland.com/309607/yaradua-inspects-nigeria-made-armoured-personnel
I know we manufacture the AK-47, but that is only from 1 factory, say a missile hit that factory.... pwaam we have to import guns again. And that technology in itself is not impressive because not only are small arms obsolete, but the AK is probably the easiest and cheapest gun on earth to manufacture.
Is this toy something to be proud of? It dose fly. They may be based on civlian chassies but look at the G wagon, snatch land rover, both civlian then the amrican Styker based on a 1960s swiss APCs chassie. I doubt any missiels will hit the plant. A terroris bomb is a maybe but a simple fire is a bigger threat. Since when is a small arms obsolitie. The AK47 is so comomon due to it haveing to patten. Meaning any body can make it and not need permission or have to do anything. |

pleep: 100% lies. You don't spend 1$ billion dollars on a military project that is not for export...that is the only way these military companies are able to recoup their losses from production.
The rooivalk is the biggest military flop in African history.
1. You spend 7 billion rand to develop a helicopter design and only end up building 12. (none of which are fully operational)
2. have not managed to export a single one
3. It took yall almost a decade to create, by the time it was finished the technology was already obsolete
4. It uses 20 year old computers
5. There is no support system...(many of the support manufacturers are invested in competitors.)
6. It cost $40 million each unit. More than a brand new Apachi!
FAIL.
http://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article/what-went-wrong-with-the-rooivalk-2007-06-08-1 you are a fool We had a need during the border war and back then it was a war money was not a issue. By the time the war was over the production was so far in it was better to finish the deal wrong all where just made operational They where only overd to turkey and they where just upgraded has i said they where just upgraded and we could not buy them since we where under sanction. pleas think before you speak. |

Another of your prestidigitations is to claim Townships are safe for tourists. Are you telling me that police are not stationed to watch out when tourists are visiting Townships? Keep alluding to your deceitful comments all by yourself. They are not meant to deceive somebody like me though. The villains(South African police) are notoriously known to be puffy and like to attack African visitors than Europeans, who are given preferential treatment. Spare me this over-garnished statement to make Townships look as though safe for tourists without heavy police monitoring. The truth is that Nigeria is not a tourist nation proves your attempt to spite at us only to make fool of yourself. Keep living in your ignorance, and it won't help you.

I left the Mi-24/35p out because its not in the class of the others. This will include the A129-Mangusta which Turkey chose over the Rooivalk due to politics.

Overall Ratings
-Max speed: Mi-28 is faster (320km/
-Cruise speed: ROOIVALK is faster (278km/h)
-Range: ROOIVALK is by far better(740km)
-Combat radius: ROOIVALK is by far better (700km)
-Ferry range: APACHE is by far better (1,900km)
-Rate of climb: Mi-28 and ROOIVALK are equal (13,6m/s-2,677ft/min) and (13,3m/s-2,620ft/min)
-Max take of weight: Mi-28 is better (11,500kg-23,590lb)
Source wikipedia.org
Overall on points the Rooivalk and Mi-28 are far better machines. Now you work out why Turkey chose the Agusta A129 Mangusta and not the Rooivalk was it because of avionics or NATO/EU political reasons.
I hope this settles the issue. Why no werwolf or euro tiger. And the apachy has one very strong point. The longbow radar. |

agaugust: F00LISH snydergp do simple mathematics when you google the shortest air distance along a great circle longitude from calabar airport to pretoria, and add 5 drop tanks extra fuel for the leopard with 4 more hardpoints for 2 air to air missiles and 2 bombs 1,000 lb. the nigerian flying leopard is coming and you are not safe, go hide your wife and children in the a cave hole you F00L. You sure it can take that many heavy loads on it's hard points. And with only 2 AAMs and over a country with a masive ground nbassed radar the hawks would be enough. And with out any LGB's or ASMs it will have to come in close to be threat. Great targets for the radar guided 35mm AAA and starstreak SAMs. Please use logic. Any case you going yto just fly over SADC. Angloa MIG23 fleet alone will handel nigeria. |
