Henry120: I do have to agree with my compatriot agaugust. Why has the south african rooivalk failed so much. Apart from south africa and maybe zimbabwe, I do not know of any other country in africa that use the rooivalk or even the lynx for that matter.
An intelligence officer here in nigeria once told me that the south african helos do not have good nor dependable technology.
Your MRAPs are very popular, uganda, kenya, burundi have lots of them. Same cannot be said of your helos. South africa is the only country that flies them.
Please do not compare the MI-35p or MI-24V to the rooivalk, it's an insult to the russians. The MI's are battle tested and proven helos, more than 60% of the countries in the world fly them. It shows how good those birds are. They have the same sytem has the hinds agreia uses. We upgraded them. The airfram has not sold but all the sytems, avionics, wepaons, rotar blads, seat extra have been put in hinds. They called Supper hinds. The hind used in the movie blood diomonds and lord of war belonged to SA. It even flown by SAAF so we know what the hind can and can not do. The super hind (the SA upraded hinds) are even better than some of the russian hinds. Though russia has started a upgrade program. The rooifalk was all so upgraded last year. |

agaugust: south Africa is wasting its time and money to modify and upgrade a half d.ead Rooivalk helicopter gunship project. You cannot compete in international market against Russia and America. South Africans always over- rate themselves, that's why they always get disappointments and final defeat.
Try learn to walk before you run. Nigeria is very careful about jumping too fast in weapons marketing, try learn from us and build cheaper and easy to maintain weapons that can compete with China because the Chinese are selling billions of dollars weapons right under your long nose here in African market.
not even one single Rooivalk helicopter has been sold for many years and NOBODY will buy this bad market product you are boasting about. Rooivalk is more likely to become d.ead than alive.
Go market it in your south African village. Your Rooivalk is a big international failure and all the noise you make here cannot sell it. Put half of it in storage like your money wasting Grippen jets. The rooifalk was only ever marketed to turky but lost due to them wanting somthing used by NATO. No other county was in the market for a fresh production helicopter while the production line was open. The sytems used on the rooifalk form the bass of the Hind upgrade program that we do. So it was not a waist. No one bought our airfram yes but they have bouth every thing else. |

all4naija: Is that the only thing you saw in my comment? I would dare you explain to me why African immigrants are attacked in your streets. If they are attack on regular streets, from a definitive point of view, it means it would be far worse in the ghettos of Township.
Having 2 million tourists visit Township just proved my point, for the fact that those tourists are well protected and guarded unlike those who live in the country or black Africans residing over there. So, trying to use that to cover-up the crimes in Township woefully is a failure on your side. While gaurded. They in a bus that is it. No solders or any thing like that just a bus. Because poor south africans don't like forghiners. Just like nothern nigerians don't like anything western. And when was tge last major attack. |

Henry120: Is there an official car for Zuma in every street for him to drive in, when he visits different provinces of your country??
In nigeria when GEJ wants to travel from the capital to any state, the airforce transports his official car ahead of him. One VIP car is has good has the next. And many times he uses a helicoper. That mathod is much safer. Last time the minster of deffense visted a unit I was in she had 2 helicopters and used a VIP car from the area. The presdiant should be the same. One built proof lojacked merc is has good has the next. |

Henry120: The president of nigeria does not drive a limousine. He drives a mercedes G-class.
I do share your sentiments that dedicating a C-130 for the president is a waste of resources. However the agency in charge of his security should be in the best position to answer that question.
I have told you severally that the airforce operates SIX C-130's, however your hard head would not allow you accept this fact.
Now jacob Zuma went to see mummar ghaddafi in tripoli 6 months before the latter was deposed from office, my question is, how was his (ZUMA's) logistics, CAR, pick up trucks for his security team and military hardware transferred to libya?
You are a dolt. The airforce those in house servicing and maintenance for all her planes. The C-130's sent abroad, were sent so that they can receive a comprehensive over haul and up grade of all their systems and gadgets( up to date radar system, defence system). Just to bring it to par with the latest american C-130. Libya was a hot zone and the presdent received extra protection. So a C130 was used and SF provide the protection. But that was not the norm. |

Henry120: How does ZUMA transport his presidential car??
Mali has 2 C-130's and 1 G222 deployed. There are 3 more C-130's in the country. How that is a problem is beyond me. I though you had 6 C130 2 mali 1 presdent 3 being being renevieted. Not with a C130 at his personal beck and call. If it is internal there are plenty of VIP cars for him when he lands. |

Now here's the answer on what happened to 1 C-130 http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Nigerian_Air_Force_C-130_crash It is strang he has a persnal cargo plane while mali has only 2 C130s |

Henry120: The boeing 737-500 is currently been rigged with airborne sensing equipment. The plane is to be used as a dedicated troop transport plane. While some of the C-130's or G-222 would exclusively get saddled with the transportation of military hardware, equipment, cargo.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE PLACE ORDERS FOR 9 RUSSIAN HELICOPTERS..3 REFURBISHED C130 HERCULES PLANES TO BE DELIVERED FEBRUARY 2013; 130 PERSONNEL IN COUNTERTERRORISM TRAINING
THE NATION NEWSPAPERS November 30, 2012
The Air Force has ordered for nine helicopters from Russia to strengthen air surveillance, Air Marshal Alexander Badeh has said.
Badeh, who spoke at the NAF Public Relations and Information Workshop in Abuja yesterday, said the Air Force is fixing three C-130 aircraft in its fleet. According to him, the three aircraft would be ready by February and added to the ones on the ground for enhanced performance.
The Air Chief said the NAF is training over 130 personnel in counter terrorism. Badeh, who emphasised the advantage of air surveillance in the fight against terrorism, added that there are plans by the Air Force to assume total control of the nation’s borders.
He pleaded with the public to alert security agencies to information that could lead to the arrest of terrorists. Badeh said without information from the citizenry, it would be difficult for security agencies to win the fight.
TWO C-130's are on permanent duties in mali, 1 is currently been used for presidential logistics. This leaves nigeria with 3 C-130's ferrying troops/ equipment in nigeria it self.
My friend, the G-222 was used to ferry members of the airforce quick response squad to mali. It is a medium transport plane. You telling me that your boieing is not a VIP aircraft. If you are you are carzy. I have mentioned the helicopters in a difrent post. Are those C130s not your own C130 set to be refurbished. Somthing SA dose in house. The A400M deal was cancelld but the money has been returend and SAAF is again in the market. USA is trying to sell the C17 to us. And the suacepan project MPA will all so have a tramsport rolle. |

The type and kind of pardons grantd by Bill Clinton on his last day in office and that grantd by President Ford, are way worst than what GEJ just did. That has also bn d pattern for most US Presidents (pardoning Spies, bank robbers, fraudsters, corrupt officials, murderers, 'prisoners of conscience', etc). Imagine Nigeria 'expressing regrets' ova such Presidential pardons done in d US, and wats worse, using very undiplomatic channels as TWITTER to do so... this is big lie number one by DictatorZAR the south african, there is NO mid-air refuelling aeroplane in south african airforce You both wrong and correrct and then sort of wrong/correct SAAF had a mid air refueling abilty durring aparthied but had to withdraw the aircraft during the dark 90 and early 2000s due to budget cuts. The A400M is able to do mid air refuelthing though and the gripen can perform a mid air refueling but due to problems out of SAAF control they have not arrived actualy no one has gotten them yet. This has led to many problems since we scraped out C160 transport aircaft meaning we are consdirbly short of milltary lift. Even though we still have more than you. Our is nigeria copping if we have problems. |

Henry120: Comments from militaryphotos.net
1)South Africa should consider selling those 12 Gripens to countries like Philippines, Thailand (w/c already operates Gripens), and eastern European countries. First Gripen delivered in April 2008 and from other sources it's saying they only have 6 pilots and can't afford to give them the necessary flying hours to maintain their competencies. Translation, those Gripens are barely used.
2)The SA Army faces block obsolessence of their armour, IFVs and logistics vehicles with no sign of recapitalisation. The SAAF medium transport fleet is disappearing and there are no replacements for the MPA and IFR capabilities. The Navy needs funds to revive their MCM capability and to expand their OPV fleet. In short, the SANDF is starved for funds and it is unlikely they will get it. Watch a once proud defence force wither and die.

SAADF have become a shade of what they were ............. I know what you mean, and I fully agree. Many have said that at its peak, the SADF was one of the most potent fighting forces in the world, and the strongest military force in Africa by a long shot. How things have changed... Some for the better (the fall of apartheid) and a lot more for worse. (crime, unemployment, state of civil and military services, etc.)
The SAAF appears to be in a pretty dire way.
What a sad state of affairs.
The SAAF/SANDF is a mere shadow now of what it was pre 1994.

The South Africa Gripen deal was controversial at it's time and still is. 26 planes is a lot when other countries only bought 6-12. In general terms there is an unwillingness to pay for military equipment today What the point of reading reports from peole who know nothing about SAAF or SANDF http://www.saairforce.co.za/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5911We have more than 6 pilots 8 pilots where sent to sweden for wargames last year. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by andrewza: 2:31pm On Mar 14, 2013 |
Henry120: Twelve of the South African Air Force’s 26 Gripen fighter jets are in long-term storage, according to defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, as the Air Force does not have the funding to fly them.
This emerged yesterday in reply to a parliamentary question posed by the opposition Democratic Alliance party’s Shadow Minister of Defence and Military Veterans David Maynier.
“The South African Air Force (SAAF) has 12 Gripen Fighter Aircraft placed in long-term storage. These aircraft are placed in a storage as a planned activity in line with their utilization and budget expenditure patterns/flow of SAAF,” Mapisa-Nqakula said.
“The Gripen fighter jets are supposed to provide the air combat capability for the South African Air Force (SAAF). However, the Gripen fighter jets are effectively grounded because the operating budget has been stripped to the bone and the SAAF cannot afford to operate the ‘Gripen system’,” Maynier said.
Already in 2010 there was great concern that a lack of money would ground the Gripen. Then-defence minister Lindiwe Sisulu warned that the Gripens could be mothballed if the military failed to get hold of extra funding. The Department of Defence annual report released in 2010 warned that “Combined with the recent funding cuts for the medium-term expenditure framework period, the air force will only be able to sustain the Hawk system.
“Without adequate funding levels being provided, the air force will not be able to meet its mandate in terms of defence or its support of government initiatives in the medium and longer term. The unwanted reality is portions of aircraft fleets may have to be placed in long-term storage, and certain capabilities, units or bases may have to be closed down.”
The lack of money for the Gripens has also affected flying hours and pilot training. In April 2011 then-chief of the Air Force Lieutenant General Carlo Gagiano said the Air Force was not going to fly the required number of hours due to a lack of funding and in its 2010/2011 report, the Department of Defence said that due to underfunding, the number of flight hours per Gripen aircrew member was reduced from 224 to 110 per year. At present the SAAF can only muster six qualified Gripen pilots who only have 150 flying hours available across the whole Gripen squadron this year, according to Maynier. The annual target for fighter flying hours was 250 for the 2011/2012 period, according to the Department of Defence’s most recent Annual Report.
Chief of the Air Force Lieutenant General Zakes Msimang when asked about Gripen flying hours earlier this year, said that the Air Force had never failed to deliver what was asked of it. Defence analyst Helmoed-Römer Heitman noted the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) requires fighter pilots to log at least 20 flight hours per month (240 flight hours per year per fighter pilot) to remain qualified.
“One of the biggest scandals of the Arms Deal is that we bought military equipment we could not afford to operate. And there is no better illustration of the point than the Gripen fighter jets in long-term storage,” Maynier said. “It is imperative that the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, reviews the allocation of the operating funding to the “Gripen system” in the SAAF.”
In 2007 it emerged that the Gripens cost R19.08 billion, up from the original R17.8 billion estimate for both 26 Gripens and 24 Hawks. It is unlikely that the Gripen situation will improve anytime soon, as the defence budget for the 2013/14 financial year stands at R40.2 billion, just R1.8 billion more than the previous year’s. South Africa bought 26 Gripens (17 single-seat Gripen Cs and nine two-seat Gripen Ds) as part of the Strategic Defence Procurement Package (in 2005 reduced to 26), becoming the Gripen’s first export customer. Deliveries concluded in September last year. The Gripens replaced the Cheetah fleet, which was withdrawn four years early due to funding constraints.
http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?224310-A-dozen-SAAF-Gripens-in-long-term-storage You slow man. I mentioned it all ready. Firstly 12 in storage where all ways there. It saves money. We have no need to keep them all operationl. Even if we had the money I doubt we would have made more operational And there are more than 6 pilots. Just only 6 who have finshed the course. It takes years to qualfie on a aircraft in the SAAF And the final budget was 44.6 billion. |

It could carry AGM sized missiels such has the mokap, helfire, ingwene extra. I said it is a waist on it since a 12.7 can destroy any thing it may encounter. Do you know how littel 2500kg is. There a pickups that can carry that much. |

Msauza: Aguagust you have a serious problem really, I don't know what will cure you. AndrewZA was just making an innocent comment about SA recce training American Army ranger about bush craft. I don't know what does Nigerian Special forces training with Americans, Indians, etc has to do with that statement. Beside Nigerian Special Forces are still very young, hence they require a lot of experience from the likes of Israel, America et al. SA recces have such a mass experience, that's why the Americans still respect them and regard them as masters of Bush craft. Hopefully, this they received from Bushmen (Khoisans), who are still the core elements of our Army. Even during aparthied the SADF and the recces more to the point leant a lot from the bushman. No one read spoors like them. There are only a few things I fear and a recc who wants me dead is top of that list. Did you know that it is easyer to climbe mount everest than complete SA speciol forces training. |

agaugust: nigerian navy the details says it carries 2,500kg of various kinds of payload/weapons for different types of naval missions, and just like air drone UAV carries missiles for israeli attack in palestine, so does the israeli made USV sea drone carry missiles for nigerian navy. andrewza stop wasting my time and use some adult common sense to interpret what i post all the time, no insult intended, but i have work to do in the office, sorry.
nigerian navy seastar sea drone USV I looked it up at the manufactors website. No where did I see missils mentioned. The seastar has a platform is to small to carry any form of anti ship missil unless you use AGM in the anti ship role. And they are a waist on the intended target of this veseal. Pirats, rebels and crimnal scum. A 12.7 will shred any thing it will go against so I don't think it carrys missiels. Stop saying ever nigerian wepaon sytem has missiels. That like me say that SAAF gripen are cerrying anti ship cruise missiels just because they do in some other countries. Yous comon sense and think with your brain not your heart. If it NN did mount missiels on it they are avtualy waisting nigerias limted budget on uneasry sytems. On a related note SAN may not operate unmand surface ships(although KND dose have a desgine the navy has no need) we do operate unmand mini subs for anit mine operations and there a plan to maybe get a unmanded survace veasel with a sonar for anti mine opertions. |
