I do not know any period in Nigeria since I became big enough to know things that there never was brutality. But it took on a new scale when BUHARI came to power in 1983. First time to see female University students being asked to disembark from public transport buses and frogmarched through muddy puddles. Just for wearing miniskirts and regular body hugging clothes common then. Mostly by Northern soldiers barely able to speak any English. They brought Sharia mindset to the South. Police soon joined in of course. The long military regime era till 1999 only furrter enhanced that brutality. We cannot progress like this. |

Such curiosity is sadly very common among Africans. Although I wonder how people have time to follow celebrities. I couldn't give a rat's bum. I cannot think of following any celebrity. |
RIP ma. |
Africans and spirits. |
johnmba:Oh zombies will find one. Las las they can blame GEJ's great grand father who probably died like 100 years ago. They will surely find someone. ![]() |
Nice thread. |
Mitchewww:The truth Nigerians are refusing to accept. If Nigeria was thriving seriously, entrepreneurial Igbo would much prefer a massive & rich country with high purchasing power like Nigeria than Biafra that would have around one-eight of Nigerian population. |
Friend01:The religious people who contributed to science lived in fairly tolerant societies or times. You will be surprised to know that several medieval Muslim societies were very tolerant of both Jews and Christians. Even later in Southern Spain, Muslim civilisation there was top notch in science, maths and learning generally. Which you choose to have priority is your choice. Not to be forced on anyone or forced by anyone else on you. But modern intolerance is still alarming considering what we now know from history of the dangers of intolerance On Nairaland here I watch with dismay how atheists are lambasted and judged almost like the devil. Attitude of many "religious" people on NL would not encourage atheists to consider becoming religious. They demonstrate no nobility that their religions teach them to show. I have lived the bigger part of my life in societies where your religious views are your private matter and nobody does his religious sanctimony "in your face". And these societies function far better, more hRmonious and more cohesive than the over religious Nigeria society. Even after discounting for various cultures, religions and views that about on both sides. |

clive2u:Weyrey. ![]() Nigerians might claim to be tolerant people. But religious people have become increasingly intolerant of free thinkers and traditional religion subscribers. I wonder if we all read the same religious book. No society without free thinkers succeeds. Funny that ardent religious people cannot do without inventions of free thinkers like the Chinese and Westerners. From church owned TV stations/Broadcast to IPhone. ![]() My Christian faith tells me to love my neighbour as myself. It didn't say my neighbour must be a Christian. @Op, it is obvious your wife would not have married you back then as you are now. She feels duped in a way. You may not need to continue your religious practice even if less strictly than before. It is your religion from birth after all. Human interpretation of religion may not be perfect but hold on to the positives you find in it. |
Listen to the English a grade II teacher Balewa spoke then. And listen to how SANs and PhD holders speak today. You will see what went wrong. Americans and the West are not imbeciles not to know. We simply slipped into mediocrity. And the world is very unforgiving of mediocre people. As of 1961, only very few countries in the Southern hemisphere had better prospects than us. Dubai and others were villages. Singapore & Malaysia were on about same footing as us. |
Daviddson:Obiano is partly correct. Though not the only or full reason. I have written about it over the years on Nairaland. Buhari didn't want OBJ to even hand over power to civilians in 1979. But was powerless against senior SMC members like Yar'Adua, Danjuma, etc. A move that made OBJ to deny Awo the presidency. The decree that governed 1979 election provided that if no candidate in presidential election got the clear majority and the top two were too close to call, the Parliament will chose the president. Awo had secured majority support in parliament and would have been nominated, OBJ retroactively changed the rules after election to allow the one with highest votes become president and handing it to Shagari. OBJ feard an imminent coup if he handed power to a fellow Yoruba man. He thought he had secured democracy. I had investigative journalists as relatives back then. Everyone expected the coup on independence day which was also presidential inauguration day on October 1st 1983. Solomon Lar had confronted Buhari who was GOC in Jos, about coups rumours months earlier. Umaru Dikko's contacts in the military had hinted him about the coup. Buhari denied the rumour. Dikko was later kidnapped in UK by Buhari for it as Head of State. Forget corruption gist. Surely the prospect of Ekwueme taking over if Shagari should die also frightened Northern elite. Remember Biafra war ended just 13 years earlier. |
Because the youth have been subdued by the ruling old elite. Without much self-esteem and belief, they are a conquered and cowered segment of the society. Stockholm syndrome on a Gargantua basis is also there. They think all that matters is quick money to flaunt & shouting Oluwas bless my hustle. No idea that collective prosperity comes from a visionary political class. Something sorely missing since Awo was in Western Region govt. |
Indomie kids do not know of Emir Jokolo of Gwandu (Buhari's ADC's dad's) case and how Atiku as a custom officer showed stubbornness. Jokolo became Emir like his father but was later deposed. |
Interesting. Na to chill later today and see the new year in. After cross-over service of course. Thank God for this year just ending & may we all on Nairaland and beyond go safely into the new year. Plus more fabulous exploits in the new year. IJN. Amen! Seun & mods, please do the needful with this thread at the right time. ![]() |

I guess the younger sister is more promising that her big sis. And big sis dey house and nobody look her side. The parents want to kill two birds with one stone : avoid evening newspaper situation and spare the food the big sis is eating at home. ![]() Las las Na the parents gain. They will get more money from a rich businessman who will marry the younger daughter. The boy is not as smart as he thinks. Best would be to avoid that family totally. |
YorubaEmir:The middle line be like line between the nyansh of a very fat oyinbo woman. Yuck! More milk to her dairy factory. ![]() |

@OP, I am not against your spending on her as you can afford. But her mindset and entitlement mentality is troubling. What happens if someday you do not have much (God forbid), will she still be sweet and loving? Or become very unreasonable and disrespectful. With all your current largess she's calling you stingy, what if you decide to give less? In my opinion, cut your loss and move on dude. |

Kaka should join Buhari campaign train. He's a good blamer. ![]() |
Barbaric. She might have been slightly gullible or wayward or materialistic but not to deserve such a horrible death. We are sliding gradually into anarchy. |
abusurv:Well, I do not know about you. I have not seen Nzeogwu alive lately. I doubt if anybody has seen him alive in over 50 years! Keyword: Alive. |
The things that happen in this country are just jaw dropping. RIP. |
When people start flaunting things like this, I always suspect that they feel a certain emptiness within or miss being genuinely loved. I do not think everybody needs to know how rich you are or every expensive item you buy. One can be rich with money but remain mentally very poor. Be as it may, I hope she's GENUINELY made happy by her pricey acquisitions. That's all that really matters. Good luck to her. |
Buhari is the biggest treasonous traitor alive today. He raped democracy by overthrowing Shagari. A fine gentleman in the mold of Tafawa Balewa. Some indomie zombies will come and tell us Buhari did not take part in the coup. They have neither the wisdom nor experience to know that the head of state to be or leader is usually in a safe place while his boys carry out the coup. RIP Alhaji Shehu Shagari. Great to have seen your time in charge to compare with the junketting airman currently in Aso Rock. |
These arts people nor go kee person with laugh. Oxymoron ko, Carbomoron and Nitromoron ni? ![]() |
Lol. Play dudes do these and more. They know all of babes' mumu buttons and even more. ![]() When a guy is ready to marry and sees a half-decent babe, he marries her. This checklist means nothing. Do not confuse ladies any further. Hardly any lady turns down marriage proposal in our clime. FACT. |
