Yes, imported. Not a lot of countries manufacture amtivenom as its research is capital intensive
Actually this is no excuse. Money stolen by one governor can more than do it. Much of the research has been done abroad that we can learn from.

Considering that we only need to work on around 5 most common venomous snakes (carpet viper being by far the most important), it cannot cost that much. We lots of the snake around. Extracting the venom is pretty low tech too. We have a reasonably large number of bite victims for clinical trial. So the costly part would be actual serum production in animals, purification and formulation.

Northerners are too savvy to let any rift show so close to election.

Amaechi was always a tool to use, as an ardent Iscariot. They (the North) will pretend all is well until election. If they win, they will codedly deal with him.

If they lose they will accuse him of "always has a been PDP mole". His stolen Rivers millions used to buy Buhari vote in 2015 won't matter. grin cheesy grin

It is sad that we give a lot and take crumbs back from these countries....but my question is, can't we produce them locally? At least our forefathers who were mostly farmers must have survived these bites with some local anti-venom
In theory we can. But like every other aspect of life, we do not fund research purposefully to achieve self-sufficiency in any given sphere. So we seek the easy (but often expensive) way out: importation.

You basically have to follow FOUR key steps in aniti-venom (AV) in production: extract anti-venom, inject very minute amount into chosen domestic animals, extract the plasma/purity to removes microbes/viruses and other impurities with product quality control AND officially formulate the product for the market/use.

Of course each of the FOUR steps involves several things in it. Of which from step three to four pre-clinical & clinical trials are CRUCIAL to assess efficacy, safety/side effects and viability over time. For example a storage process that will not render the AV inefficient has to be devised considering that rural areas where they are MOST needed may not have stable electricity or electricity at all. Antivenom (a protein) is very susceptible to heat.

In the West, monoclonal anti-bodies are made in university labs. Undergraduate stuff. Any life science or medical student worth his salt will have done same or at least tried at undergrad level. So if employed in Biotech company later, the whole anti-body process won't come as a surprise, albeit in industrial scale.

What is your buttocks doing on the ground in the bush or road? grin

Truly snakebite in 9ja is just luck to survive it, if it injected its venom fully. Just hope it's not the most venomous snakes like mamba, viper or cobra.

Farmers in rural areas are most at risk. Exactly areas where medical facilities are few, poorly equipped or non-existent.

Australia with so many venomous snakes like Inland Taipan (world's most venomous) have done a good job producing anti-venom.

Nigeria should by now have much expertise considering high rate of bites in farming communities, especially areas like Gombe, Plateau, Bauchi, Taraba, Borno, Adamawa and other places. Especially for carpet viper that bites the most in the area, especially during raining season, harvest and flooding periods.

We still import Echitab anti-venom from Costa Rica and questionable/poor quality ones from India after all these years.

We export live snakes only to get expensive anti-venom back. Like we cheaply export crude oil and get refined petrol, kerosene, jet fuel etc back at expensive rates. Na wa for 9ja o.

Kikikikiki! grin grin cheesy cheesy

This post is funny.

People have forgotten that women cheat more these days.

While men cheat due to weakness & fun, most women cheat for a purpose: money, material stuff, promotion, passing exam, employment & other favours, greed, etc.

So it's a necessity.

Necessity & leisure do not elicit same push & determination to do something.

Considering that not all affairs or cheating result in pregnancy, considering that between 25 and 40% of all kids (incidence in first born kids being higher) of all kids belong to another man outside, clearly women have it easier, have more opportunities and do not have to pay to cheat.

Making their cheating rate higher.

It's wrong notion that boys cheat & women are angels that girls craftily use to cheat without suspicion. grin grin grin cheesy cheesy cheesy

Nigerians love material things. No science, no technology, no research ,project or discovery. Just hustle. Then buy things and show off.
You know in Nigeria when you say the truth you are called a jealous guy. Looking at the compound, you could build a nice 6 bedroom duplex and still have enough money to start a small hi-tech or any other innovative business. I'm sure Seun began Nairaland with far less money. And Seun didn't even have the Western exposure as Emenike has had over the years.

From my little experience, maintaining an average modern house is expensive, let alone a palatial one like this.

In a few years his income will reduce drastically after football career. A building of just six flats in Okota/Magodo side can earn surprisingly good returns in the years to come. I hope he has done such and more.

But it seems black people across the world who make good money have the overspending, lavish lifestyle and later left with nothing: Tyson, Ronaldihno, Emmanuel Eboue, MC Hammer, Tony Braxton, etc.

Your head dey there. They called a pastor who prescribed "River bath". That stupid pastor and those around the girl could face the law if it were in saner climes.

The society as a whole brings up a child, not just the nuclear family. The lady dancing with him is part of that society. A society increasingly failing to do the right thing for kids to emulate.

Happy new year dear.
FamilyRe: Outrage As Boy Dances With A Big Lady. See Reactions (Photos) by AreaFada2: 5:05pm On Jan 05, 2019
One thing society likes to be silent about is the sexual molestation of young boys by older women. Sad thing is society pays for it sooner or later.

I was shocked by how many acquaintances claim to have been molested by older women.

It has been shown that among boys sexually abused as kids, a higher number of them become abusers themselves.

We now know that R Kelly was sexually abused as a kid. And accusations against him flying around for years are extremely disturbing.

Not using that to exonerate anybody, but we cannot totally ignore the effect of molestation on behaviour later in life.

You will agree with me that mikel would have been a better player if he had followed his mind and played for Manchester United like he initially intended but big offer and other influence made him change is mind over night and signed for Chelsea. Now where is the mikel that was competing with Messi in youth football??
Mikel made money and has a trophy loaded cabinet. He cannot have many regrets. He might not even have lasted that long at United. Nani and Anderson who came boasting similar talents like Mikel did not end up winning Balon d'Or at United. Yorke and Andy Cole were sent packing by Ferguson at United despite their earlier heroics there.

As good as Mikel has been, he was never in the class of Messi despite comparison in youth. And never was going to be.

Nwankwo Kanu and Ronaldo de Lima were both playing in Holland and both were compared in Youth. Kanu made the perfect move to Arsenal that played the skillful free flowing football.

Even if he didn't have a heart condition, he was never quite in the class of Ronaldo.

Perhaps the football training much earlier in life in top academies enhances near maximum exploitation of potential, not just the later training as a professional footballer alone.

It's not about getting emotional...I can see a number of peeps from Edo state coming to the defence of their state, which is "fine"...It still doesn't change the FACT. Benin city is a really backward city and it's not just about this particular crime...but on all indices of evil, Benin city stands amongst the "best"
Condemning others is very easy. As we all know seeing the speck in the eyes of others is easier than removing the log in one's eye. Nothing new there.

Sadly you provide no comparative scientific data compared with Ibadan, Enugu, Akure, Jos, Kaduna and such cities for example. Such that includes unemployment level, literacy, murder rate, birth rate, poverty level, child and maternal mortality, school enrolment at primary and secondary level, etc.
In modern times, eyeballing and headlines hardly shows the full picture.

I was chatting with a female Uniben student from Akwa Ibom. She ranted that Edo people were diabolical bla bla bla. But then admitted that she has no friend from Edo State after years living in Benin. That all her friends were from other states. And she could not explain why.

But subtly admitted that her perception that Edo people diabolical before even coming to Benin probably influenced her choice of friends. She also eventually admitted that they all from outside Edo often say Edo people are diabolical. Even though they have not really been close to the natives. And have never had any diabolical problems emanating from Edo people. These are "educated" people who will later claim to know Benin people because they once lived there. Yet never mingled or sought to understand the people. So continues prejudice. Which by the way is enough to go round.

That Benin people value their culture and have not allowed colonial mentality and inferiority complex to wipe out the culture. That is what the likes of you call diabolical.
I have visited over 40 countries, mostly in the West. They all keep their culture. Even the pagan festival Christmas that you celebrate is part of Western culture. Around winter solstice, not birth of Christ. It was only introduced to try to suppress it.

It is Borno that copied Middles Eastern religion and bombing the NE to smittering and decimating the army that is progressive and advanced?
Or the pastors with human heads and corpses buried under their pulpits that are progressive and modern?

I will rather be backward with my culture than be backward with a borrowed way of life thank you very much.

See all those from skull mining world capital cities talking.

When Evans the billionaire kidnapper was operating in Benin many were blaming Edo boys.

Benin is city and many cities in Nigeria have high crime rates.

Of course any crime has to be condemned and perpetrators caught and punished according to law. And their assets seized to compensate victims or relatives. But using to express tribalism, bigotry and primitive instinct shows why we cannot go forward or have unity.
Many commenting here feel no pity for the dead. They just want to spew hatred.

Raw tribalism in football is alive and well...Let me join in too... cheesy

How can anyone describe Zico as "this one" because of his (admittedly harsh) comments about Messi? grin

But Zico has a point. In an era where clubs are richer than some countries, the World Cup (despite FIFA's many failings) seems to be the only place where the big superstars can be brought down to earth. You might be the World's best player in the richest league but if you haven't won the world cup, then there's something missing...
Tor!
This is more so because the very great players literally put other players on their back and drag them to win WC together.

Pele showed it, Maradonna did, Ronaldo da Lima did and so were Zidane & Beckenbauer. Players who individually clearly made a massive difference to their team's fortune.

That is what made France world Cup win in Russia 2018 more of a collective effort. They had very good players, though not in the mold of Zidane (Mbappe might still achieve that) but all performed near their best and gelled together in that tournament: Griezmann, Pogba, Mbappe, Varane, etc. Similar to 2014 WC winning German team.

Civil service rules are not about politics. You pay your due diligently and rise through the ranks. Learning the ropes thoroughly over the years.

To oversea the state bureaucracy overall, you need to have distinguished yourself for a very long time. Others who have paid their due should not be retired prematurely just to create space.

Murtala Mohamed made that mistake when he took over in a coup in 1975.

In the name of fighting corruption, he retired seasoned civil servants, most of whom were trained abroad before entering colonial civil service.

Nigerian civil service never recovered from that fiasco.

But because of the way Murtala died, most people are unwillingly to mention that fundamental error he made.
