The prevailing wisdom in most media-saturated societies says sex plus money equals the good life. This faulty equation is significantly changing the self-perception of many teenagers, their pursuit of happiness and envisioned future. If they are required to write on postage stamps their ultimate goals, different variants of this would appear: to outdo Cleopatra and make Croesus look poor. This aspiration is brazenly dramatised during Valentine's season. Valentine's Day is increasingly taking on the defining character of a moral holiday. Raging passion largely shape its observance. Dating violence reaches all-time high. In the spirit of the day, many teenagers will indulge in carefree sex. Some will get involved in romance-induced brawls. Others will use illicit drugs for the first time. This is worrisome. Even ardent laissez-faire elite who promote sexually liberal views would agree that the moral health of society is gravely endangered when sex, drug, alcohol and gambling become "teens' issues". Valentine's Day has a peculiar moral tone which, in the name of love, extols the do-whatsoever-you-like attitude and subjects reason to obsession. Also, it seemingly suspends conventional systems of thought and social conduct thereby making untested assumptions to set the ground rules of social activities. Hence, at the drop of a hat, many would engage in sexual activities in front of a camera. The "strong," in search of sluttish sex, bullies the weak, exploits the vulnerable and commits outrageous obscenity. Society has a moral duty to save libido-driven teens from plunging into the vile world of violence. Dating violence causes many problems. It could predispose survivors to sex disorder, self-loathing, dependence on alcohol, illicit use of drugs and other antisocial habits. If not well managed, their academic performance and zest about life may decline. In fact, those molested today are likely to molest others tomorrow. There are places where dating violence are likely to occur. Some examples are: secluded places and overly permissive moral context where pleasure trumps scruples. Whenever moral environments are conditioned in ways that allow people's mood to determine what is good, values become disposable, whims rule over principles and insanity becomes an evolving norm. Hormones will dictate rightness, particularly for adventure-seeking teens. "Seek pleasure, avoid pain" will gain the status of an article of faith. Unfortunately, those who follow the dictates of hormones eventually wallow in regret. Valentine's Day ought to rekindle the flames of love. But since, Hollywood spells love as sex, true love is becoming ghostlike. Everyone extols its transformational virtues; however, very few experientially know what it is. This is mostly true of those who were raised in the era when television began to play the role of babysitter. Their working definition of hell is love without sex. Generally, in popular culture, chastity is depicted as a value of bygone repressive era. Television, music and film are riddled with illusions about the magic of sex. Teenagers are led to see it as mere recreation, a way of lessening tension, forging wholesome bonds, a proof of love and spark of genius. Consequently, many young people are not skilled at cultivating life enriching platonic relationships. The satisfaction of libido is now central to their concept of an ideal girl-boy interaction. This has made many teens to do something sexual they didn't really want to do. The numbers of teenage parents in Nigeria are bound to increase in the months ahead, because of Valentine's Day escapades. The implication is, many girls and boys will drop out of school and become streetwalkers, pocket pickers or unskilled labourers in sweatshops. Teen parents are vulnerable in many ways. The burden of raising children can hinder them from truly experiencing the deep joys of human flourishing. It is beyond contestation that parenting is an uphill task; it impedes growth in all facets of life when undertaken hastily. Hence, many teenage parents, particularly mothers hardly optimise their capacity for exceptional achievements. Likewise, their children's growth is often retarded. Members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, from Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State have called on President Goodluck Jonathan to caution his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, over her alleged refusal to allow the party to hold its governorship campaign in the area. The APC said the call became necessary as a result of the inability of the party in the state to hold its governorship rally after several applications to the State Police Command to provide security for its supporters during the event. According to the party, rather than agree to provide security for the APC governorship campaign in Okrika, the state Police command suggested that the event be postponed indefinitely since it (command) would not be able to guarantee security if they go ahead with the rally. Okrika is the native home of Mrs. Patience Jonathan and is one of the areas in the state currently embroiled in political crisis. Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, the Chairman of Dakuku Peterside Campaign Organisation in Okrika Local Government Area, Mr. Tamuno William, said that the APC had been forced to postpone indefinitely its proposed rally in Okrika based on the suggestion of the state Police command. He said, “On Monday February 10, leaders of the APC in Okrika received invitation letters to a security briefing with CP Bature scheduled for Tuesday February 11, 2015. “Prior to these invitations, there were rumours all over Okrika to the effect that the wife of the President, Mrs. Jonathan, had decreed that the APC must not be allowed to hold its rallies in the two Okrika-speaking local government areas of Okrika and Ogu/Bolo. “According to the rumours, despite several entreaties to her majestic Excellency to allow the APC hold a mere campaign rally, she insisted that the rallies must not hold on ‘her turf’. “To further guarantee that her orders were not to be thwarted, Mrs. Jonathan arrived Port Harcourt today, Wednesday February, 11, 2015, with plans to visit Okrika on Thursday, February 12. “In obedience to the invitation from the CP, the leadership of the APC was at the Rivers State Police command at 12 noon and waited to meet with the CP and waited up till 12.40pm. “Eventually, DC Shaba, DC Amadi and other members of the command, who sat in for the CP, received us. The members of the PDP were evidently absent at the meeting. The sum total of the meeting with the police command was that the Rivers State Police command was unable to guarantee security for anyone in Rivers State during any rallies. “This meeting was holding at the same time as the PDP was holding its own rally in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.” Read full story here: http://www.today.ng/news/rivers-2015-save-us-from-your-stubborn-wife-okrika-apc-tells-jonathan/ |
The International Conference Centre’s venue of the conference was thrown into confusion as delegates ran for dear lives after some aggrieved contestants and their supports suddenly became violent, hijacking and destroying ballot boxes even while voting was still underway. The 11th National Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress was on Thursday abruptly disrupted as aggrieved parties hijack, and smash ballot boxes being used to elect incoming leaders of the organisation, the News Agency of Nigeria is reporting. The International Conference Centre’s venue of the conference was thrown into confusion as delegates ran for dear lives after some aggrieved contestants and their supports suddenly became violent, hijacking and destroying ballot boxes even while voting was still underway. The Conference, which began Tuesday, was organised to elect new leaders for the country’s central labour union following the expiration of tenure of the current executives. It is not clear yet how the event, which had been peaceful since it began suddenly descended into crisis, but the election for the President of the Union had created tension among delegates and split them along partisan lines. After the disruption, the police took over the venue and delegates were sent away, ostensibly to protect the facility from being vandalised. Labour leaders have now reconvened at the NLC headquarters in the Central Business District of Abuja for a meeting, scheduled for 1 p.m., aimed at resolving the logjam. Three candidates had put themselves forward to be elected as President Waheed Omar’s successor. They are the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Joe Ajaero; the National President of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Igwe Achese; and National President of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria Ayuba Wabba. For the three deputy president positions, the Non Academic Staff Union is putting forward its General Secretary, Peter Adeyemi, while the General Secretary, National Union of Textiles, Issa Aremu, is contesting unopposed, along with the National President, Nigeria Civil Service Union, Kiri Mohammed. President Jonathan made it clear that “elections will be conducted in this country and the government will be inaugurated on May 29th of this year.” President Goodluck Jonathan spoke in an intimate setting with four members of the press. President Jonathan’s media chat did not mention any major policy changes or announcements, and served to reinforce his position on issues of security and the general elections. When asked about his confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Attahiru Jega he responded, “if I feel that Jega is not good enough, for obvious reasons, then I can by provisions in the Constitution that gives the person who appoints the power to remove, and I’ve not told anybody I’m going to remove Jega.” His position, however, seems to conflict with statements from other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders who last week called for Jega’s resignation and incarceration. On the Chibok girls, President Jonathan asked not to be quoted when the issue will be resolved but did reassure the Nigerian public that “the issues of Chibok girls will get better.” President Jonathan was puzzled by what he calls “the politiziation of Boko Haram.” He said that “I can’t even imagine someone insinuating that I [would be responsible] for politicizing Boko Haram.” President Jonathan reinforced his previous statements that he is taking the insecurity problems in the north serious, and that elections could not be held this week because of public safety. President Jonathan made it clear that “elections will be conducted in this country and the government will be inaugurated on May 29th of this year.” Source: http://saharareporters.com/2015/02/11/president-jonathan%E2%80%99s-media-chat-covers-inec-boko-haram-and-election-postponement |
I salute your courage and patriotism to be one of the progressive members. It gives me joy and happiness to be part of the movement clamouring for change. To others who are not part of the movement, the changes we are talking about affect everyone positively. Our priority is how to make our noble country one of the best in the world. A vote for Buhari/Osinbajo (APC) could make the difference. We can't just fold our arms and allowed someone who is incompetent to be ruling us. Having said that, what contributions do we members of progressive have in mind to move our country forward? I do not mean after the election, I am talking about before the election. If we could start something meaningful as a progressive before the election, that would motivate common citizen to understand our mission/aim towards the development of our country and this would certainly increase our chances in the coming election. It could be in form of community service, helping the less privilege, giving hope to those who have lost confident in themselves and motivate the electorate to be part of the movement. Yoruba adage says " Agbajo owo ni a n fi so aya" meaning 'Together we can achieve the best. We need to proof it to the people that APC is not coming to add more to Nigeria's problem, we are coming to develop the country, provide jop opportunity, solve the insecurity issue, provide good transportation from rural to urban area, make our economy one of the best in the world and most of it all, to reduce the bad image that outsider(foreigner) has against Nigerians. Did you know that currently, Nigeria got more popular for bad records? you want to know why?, Boko haram issue is the number one on the list. In any part of the world, any news or information relating/referring to Boko haram simply means they are talking about Nigeria. How many are the Boko harams? Does it mean that the people behind Boko haram are more powerful than the current government? or is it that the federal government didn't just care ? well, if they do not care, we members of progressive care for every citizen of this nation. Chibok girls saga is almost going to a year now. Where are the girls? Are they still alive or something terrible happened to them? we are talking about human being here not an animal. In Wande's coal voice ' Se na like this we go dey dey? I do not want to talk about the corruption part as Oga at the top had already said corruption is not stealing. It simply means let them continue embezzling/stealing the money that belongs to us all. Do not get me wrong, not that we do not have corrupt people among APC, it is everywhere but we are trying our best to make the difference. If not for POVERTY OF THE MIND, someone that had stole billions of Naira which his/her 3rd generation to come can never spend finish still want to steal more. The most annoying part of it is laundering the money that belongs to us to a foreign land which by the time they die, nobody to claim the money. is that not stupidity? If we have all what it takes as a nation, we won't be moved to travel outside the country to seek for greener pasture. Infact, our country will be somewhere foreigner are looking forward for a greener pasture instead. we could all see the changes in all APC states and that should be a tip of an iceberg. Nigeria belongs to us all and it is our responsibility to make it a great nation. THE CHANGES BEGINS WITH YOU AND I. Let us come with different idea on how to imply the changes to the common man on the street. As we all know, the people's General (Buhari) do not support corruption, he cares more about the masses. He is a motivation to us. In him we believe Nigeria will reach the promise land. #IHAVEDECIDED to be part of the change. May God help me (AMEN). The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, said the insecurity, bad economy and corruption in Nigeria is a “terrible troika” disrupting meaningful progress in Nigeria. Mr. Buhari said three form the most pertinent of the grievous challenges that Nigeria grapples with and must be tackled before the country can chalk out any path to development. “Once again, Nigeria is in crisis. Our country is facing grievous challenges in numerous sectors. In the light of recent events, the three most pertinent at this time are security, the state of the economy and corruption forming a terrible troika that must be tackled all at once before we can achieve any meaningful progress,” Mr. Buhari said. He spoke at the Delegates’ Conference of the National Labour Congress, NLC, that held in Abuja, on Monday. The APC presidential candidate regretted the growth of Boko Haram to international notoriety and blamed the Nigerian government for the sect’s capacity to unleash extreme violence and capturing of parts of Nigerian territory even after committing over $32.88 billion to defence budget. He said: “In August 2011, a vehicle smashed through two security barriers at the United Nations headquarters in Abuja just after 11 a.m. Its driver crashed the car into the reception area of the building which housed 26 different UN agencies, and then detonated a bomb. Twenty-five people were killed; around 60, wounded. The then little-known extremist group, Boko Haram, claimed responsibility for the gruesome attack. “Since then, Boko Haram has gained international notoriety and become a major national menace – kidnapping girls from their schools and women from their homes; slaughtering boys in their dormitories and men in their farms; exploding bombs in public and private venues; and taking town after town in the northeast of Nigeria. And, for some reason, our defence forces are unable to cope and unable to defend. Despite the federal government’s defence budget that has gulped over$32.88 billion in the past five years. “Our security situation in this country has never been so dire. Today, Nigerians have to endure, not just terrorist attacks in the North, but militancy in the Niger Delta, communal violence in the Middle Belt, cult wars in the South, and kidnappings, armed robberies, and common acts of thuggery throughout the country. Most are left to fend for themselves. Those who turn to the police, the army or any other state security agencies usually have the means and personal connections to buy help and protection. Those who don’t simply move on, resigned. The bitter ones may form vigilante groups, others join mobs that dispense jungle justice on suspects and scapegoats alike. Too many believe they have nothing to lose, and everything to gain, and the most alienated are easy prey for terrorists, militants, and thugs. This must change!” Discussing the economy, he maintained that monetary policy measures taken by the Central Bank of Nigeria to stabilise the Naira have led to inflation and raised prospects of “hard times ahead.” “And then, the economy. A few weeks ago, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) took monetary actions to reduce the pressure on the Naira by devaluing the currency and increasing interests rates – both directly and indirectly, by raising interest rates and restricting the amount banks can lend from their available cash. These actions, while necessary to reduce the slide in our currency, have reduced the amount of goods the ordinary Nigerian can purchase with the money he or she has. “We are likely to experience a rise in the prices of all goods, especially fuel, bread and foodstuff. The hard times ahead will affect Nigerians in every part of our country, 67 per cent of whom already live on less than N200 per day,” the former Head of State said. Presenting the remedy to the state of Nigeria’s economy, he said the APC “in line with our party’s manifesto, we will identify and promote growth of industries and give incentives for the use of local content.” He listed youth unemployment, lack of social services, corruption, and poor governance as other challenges facing Nigeria Mr. Buhari said these challenges will be tackled by a crop of people “who have the competence, the experience, the know-how, the leadership capacity and, most especially, the courage to move Nigeria forward. APC is that group. An APC government at the centre will treat Labour as a partner in moving the nation forward”. “An APC government will protect and respect labourer’s right to organize, guaranteeing the rights to collective bargaining in good faith in law. We will promote new skills, equip youth for a modern economy through a network of local technology institutions to provide free training in courses for the unemployed,” he promised. He said the APC could not accomplish the task alone and solicited the support of the Labour. “I know you (NLC delegates) made this journey for a good reason. You came here because you believe in what this country can be. That is to say, you all believe in change. “You believe that the labour of our heroes past and present shall never be in vain. You believe that our hopes and dreams can become reality. You believe in a nation bound in freedom, peace and unity. You believe that we can rebuild the broken walls. You believe that our great country can set a standard for all of Africa to see. I pray that you will give me the opportunity to play a part in bringing about this CHANGE that the All Progressives Congress, the APC, so strongly desires for our country, Nigeria. “As most of you know, I am not a novice when it comes to participating in the struggle to deliver Nigeria from the power of darkness. Many times, my efforts have earned me the wrath and vengeance of crooks and thieves. What I want to assure everyone in this room and across the length and breadth of this vast country is that I will do my best for you,” said Mr. Buhari. Senator Babafemi Ojudu alleged that with the elections postponement, President Goodluck Jonathan planned to have his tenure extended for a 2-year term. Speaking on February 10 during at the University of Ibadan organized by the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), the politician representing Ekiti Central said there would be no elections this year at all. The Independent National Electoral Committee on Saturday announced the shift of general polls for 6 weeks over security issues. Senator Ojudu expressed scepticism about the move. He was quoted as saying by The Nation: “We are entering into a very long night in Nigeria. If anybody thinks there will be election on March 28 and April 11, he is deceiving himself. They are just deceiving us. The body language of some top leaders is that the Federal Government is not willing to organise any election now. “We are resuming next week. I will not be surprised if they bring a motion seeking postponement of the election for six months because of the Boko Haram war. Interestingly, about 80 per cent of senators are not returning. And senators are broke. All they need to get the motion adopted is a simple majority. Then, they may ask for two more years. That is what they are working towards.” When asked how the All Progressives Congress (APC) would deal with the challenge, Ojudu said that the opposition lawmakers planned to regroup next week to coordinate their actions and response to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleged agenda. The ARG on its part criticized the elections postponement. The group chairman, Hon. Olawale Oshun, suggested that the polls shift was connected with the military plan to take over or Balkanise Nigeria. “It is in this light that we in Afenifere Renewal Group, and by extension, the Yoruba, contend that this election shift is certainly not just about elections. We believe that the postponement is about something more sinister. “This postponement had long been foreseen by Nigerians, and we had awaited its doomed arrival in awe. The Federal Government and its security agencies have been fighting Boko Haram in the last five years, and had not, at any time, dealt that enemy of state any sucker punch. “The first sinister motive we suspect is that this postponement might be the ground to prepare a soft surface for a sympathetic group within the Armed Forces to take over the reins of power, since in character and content there is little to distinguish the present rudderless government from the one that ruled us till 1983. “It is necessary to warn that the Yoruba would not be part of any country that is forcibly taken over by any military insurrection, no matter the direction or purpose of any such self-styled messiahs. We as a people know what we want, and this is clearly not part of it. This is definitely not the change we as a people would clamour for. “If for any reason, Nigeria ceases to be ruled democratically, or would be Balkanised into smaller groupings, then we Yoruba people would rather go our way and choose to become an independent nation. This is a change we would agitate for.” The elections shift caused many negative reactions. While the opposition characterized the decision as “highly provocative”, the ruling party praised the INEC saying that safety of Nigerians is the most important issue for the country’s leadership. Soon indications also emerged that Jonathan’s administration might remove and substitute the INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, before the newly announced dates (March 28 and April 11). However both the INEC and the Presidency debunked rumours describing them as false. Source: http://www.naij.com/382712-gej-seeks-for-2-year-tenure-extension-senator-ojudu.html

The source said “I can confirm that we received signals that the Niger Republic soldiers killed over 300 of them. And we are also battle ready in our end here around Yobe state that shares border with Diffa region. The Niger Republic military has claimed to have killed over 300 Boko Haram fighters in a gun duel around its borders with neighbouring Nigeria. The Nigerian military had at the weekend said it killed 109 Boko Haram fighters that started attacks in Diffa areas. A Nigerian military officer serving in the multi-national force confided to our reporter, while it was also confirmed by the country’s Minister of Defence, Mahamadou Karidjo who briefed journalists today. The source said “I can confirm that we received signals that the Niger Republic soldiers killed over 300 of them. And we are also battle ready in our end here around Yobe state that shares border with Diffa region. “The Boko Haram fighters are gradually running away from border areas into hinterland where they cannot succeed. I can also tell you that very soon, we will cut short their movement and links with villages they get foods and other essentials. “The alternative they have used to be from Niger, Tchad and Cameroon areas but with this development with multinational military approaches. We will soon cycle them and route all of them and their camps. Source: http://saharareporters.com/2015/02/10/we-killed-over-300-boko-haram-fighters-says-niger-defence-minister

Prugee:You should rather be sincere to yourself. Let me use this simple example, Imagine a tenant to be telling house owner what time to enter the house. That is exactly the issue of Boko haram. Jonathan is the Commander in Chief of all the arm forces. He has power to direct all the security agencies to wipe out Boko haram within a week. What is stopping him? Does it mean people behind Boko haram are more powerful than the government of today? For the past 16 years that PDP have been ruling the presidency, what positive impact has it made in your life? Though Jonathan is a good man but to me, I think he is too weak to rule us. The CABALS surrounding him do not give him free hand to operate. Nothing is bad in giving a trial, that will send signal to all the politicians that Nigerians have woken up from their slumber. To all the supporters of both PDP and APC, we all have same interest which is the development of our great nation. If the changes come, it won't affect only APC members but to all Nigerians. A onetime President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said a new federal government must emerge in Nigeria on May 29, this year which will be in line with the country’s constitution. Obasanjo said this yesterday in Nairobi, Kenya while fielding questions from the BBC on the announcement made by INEC on Saturday as regards the postponement of the 2015 general polls. He observed that the constitution has outline how the new government will emerge. He said, “That is all I can go by. I cannot go by any situation or any other thing”. The ex- president played down on the possibility of Nigeria having an interim national government should the presidential election fail to hold. Obasanjo said, “I don’t know that because the constitution does not have provision for that. There is no place in our constitution for an interim government. I will just have to wait and see”.
