Car TalkHow To Check If Your Seat Belts Are Properly Working by autojosh(op): 3:39pm On Apr 23, 2018
Statistics have revealed that your chance of being injured in an accident and/or the severity of injury may be greatly reduced if you are wearing your seat belt. It is strongly recommended that the driver and all passengers buckle up every time they are on board.

No matter how sophisticated you might think your car safety technology is, you should never underestimate the usefulness of your seat belt.
There is a very simple method to check if these seat belts are properly functioning or just an ordinary rope so to say.

There is what is called ‘Retractor’ in every seat belt system, except for older cars like Peugeot 504. The retractor is designed to lock during a sudden stop or on impact. They are designed to lock the seat belt movement by two separate methods.
When the seat belt is pulled quickly from the retractor and when the vehicle slows down rapidly.

To know if your seat belts are properly functioning and to increase your confidence, check the operations as follows:

Grasp the shoulder belt and pull quickly forward. The retractor should lock and restrict further belt movement. If the retractor does not lock during this check, know that something is wrong. Visit a good and prestigious autorepair shop to get it fixed before it’s too late

Car TalkThis N10m Lamborghini Diablo Is The Cheapest Lamborghini You Can Buy by autojosh(op): 11:02am On Apr 20, 2018
If you've been thinking of buying a Lamborghini Diablo, your dream might just be coming true as an affordable Lambo has just been unveiled. Sadly, it's not the real deal, it's the LEGO plastic version.

The original Diablo has an average cost of N109 million, however, you can pay about 10% of that for this full size LEGO built one that can only sit idle in your garage all day.

The original Lamborghini Diablo name was introduced in the late '80s. It is powered by a V12 engine producing 492 hp reaching a top speed of 325 km/h. It was one of the fastest cars in that era.

This LEGO version has the following features:

- opening scissor-doors, opening bonnet and trunk (with luggage)
- fully detailed engine
- dashboard with realistic stickers
- pop-up headlights or clear-glass headlights
- coupe or roadster
- different rims
- detailed stickers and many chrome parts

The actual price was not stated, however, it is estimated to start at N10 million considering the price of some similar replicas that have been built.

Will you buy a N10 million Lamborghini Diablo you will never be able to show off on the street or you'll rather cough out N109 million for the real car?

Car Talk7 Injuries Car Airbags Can Cause If They Deploy by autojosh(op): 9:36pm On Apr 19, 2018
https://i66.tinypic.com/qrduz4.jpg

Airbags have obviously saved the lives of several accident victims. Saving people is what they are built to do, however, they could do the opposite sometimes and injure or kill people. Now, I am not just referring to the Takata airbag scandal. I am also talking about the airbag that are functioning properly which gives you the confidence to overspeed with the assurance that nothing can happen because your car has 10 airbags protecting you from left, right and center.

Before we go into some of the injuries that can be sustained when airbags deploy, I'd like to state that this safety equipment can kill children with ease. So, it is very important that kids should be kept away from the front seat until they are 13-15 years old or big enough to fit into space properly.

Even as an adult, these are some of the injuries that can be sustained when airbags deploy:

1. Facial Injury: The face is always the first part of the body to come in contact with the airbag. This makes it an easy target just like back in secondary school days when boys will always come out of a fight with a swollen face. The airbag does a good job in preventing the windshield from coming for your face.. but, the speed and strength at which it deploys can be worse than a punch in the face.

2. Eye Injury/Blindness: The eyes are particularly vulnerable to injury. Cases of eye injury, temporary blindness or permanent blindness have been reported in airbag deployment incidences. Although, permanent blindness is not a frequent occurrence, but it is still as scary as it sounds.

3. Chest Injury: With the airbag, your chest will probably not hit the steering and your body will also be prevented from being thrown out of the car. However, the airbag comes to protect you fast and hard and this can lead to fractured ribs, broken bones and damaged tissues.

4. Limb Injury: Imagine having a hand on the path of an airbag explosion. The result can be catastrophic. Shoulder injury is also possible to occur.

5. Neck and Back Injuries: Neck and spine fractures are also possible occurrences which have been suffered by a couple of accident victims.

6. Burn: Airbags are made of nylon fabric and its explosion can cause skin inflammation, burn and damage as well as chemical irritation.

7. Internal Injuries: This is the silent killer. If an airbag that can cause all the injuries listed above as well as death, then it can easily cause internal bleeding. An accident victim can also react to chemical releases during the deployment. So make sure you get yourself examined by your doctor if your airbag ever deploys.

These injuries obviously don't sound like something anyone will want and I am sure you've been thinking of how to prevent them outrightly. Well, complete prevention cannot be guaranteed, however, the negative effects can be mitigated by avoiding excessive speed, using your seatbelt and sitting in an appropriate driving position amongst other. See 7 Driving Position Mistakes Car Drivers Make - HERE

Have you ever experienced an airbag deployment? Tell us your experience to enable us learn from you.

PoliticsIs Nigeria The Costliest Place In The World To Build Roads? by autojosh(op): 10:37am On Apr 18, 2018
In Nigeria, when the government – Federal, State, etc – announce how much they spend, or intend to spend, on a short distance road project, the amount always leaves one feeling dizzy.

It has become the norm; in Nigeria, the average cost for constructing a kilometer of road is N1Billion. And this is against the World Bank’s benchmark of N238million.

Even sadder is that when eventually completed, some of these roads do not stand the test of time.

According to a 2009-2013 report on Road Infrastructure Development in Nigeria, the cost of road construction in Nigeria compared to other African countries is outrageous

The report was published by the Abuja-based Centre for Social Justice (CSJ). It was a report based on an earlier study conducted by the World Bank in 2000.

According to the CSJ report, in Nigeria, constructing a kilometer of road costs between N400 million and over N1 billion.

Now, here are a few examples to support the CSJ report.

In 2013, the Federal Government awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the 127km Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at N167bn ($1bn at the time it was awarded)

Interestingly, and also in 2013, a similar contract was awarded for the 1,028km Lagos-Abidjan road project. The Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) estimated this project to cost between N167bn and N240bn.

Note, the ECOWAS six-lane project is expected to connect five (5) major cities in the region namely Lagos, Nigeria; Cotonou, Benin Republic; Lome, Togo; Accra, Ghana and Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire.

In other words, the number of kilometers to be covered by the ECOWAS project is 8 times higher than Nigeria’s Lagos-Ibadan Express road project; and the cost per kilometer is far lower than that of Nigeria.

At the projected maximum cost of N240bn, the cost of the ECOWAS road per km will be N234m. Whereas the six-lane Expressway road contract awarded by the Federal Government at N167bn cost N1.3bn per kilometer.

In the Limpopo Province of South Africa, to build a kilometer of paved road, it will cost N33m or $194,000, while the maintenance cost stands at N7.6m ($45,000).

Meanwhile, in 2006, the Lagos State Government signed a 30-year concession agreement with the Lekki Concession Company to finance, build, operate and maintain the Lekki-Epe Expressway. This was to be for a given period before it would revert to the government. The concession model can otherwise be called BOT- Build, Operate and Transfer.

At a cost of approximately N1bn ($5.9m) per km, the Lekki-Epe Expressway project also far overshoots the World Bank benchmark.

Driving is a complex activity. It requires all your senses to be at full alert.

All your senses needs to be fully alert because they would have to contribute to several important split second driving decisions that you will make.

Drowsiness or sleepiness decreases our sense of good judgment, and increases risk taking.

Sleep or tiredness does not come suddenly. There are always signs that we exhibit to inform us that we are tired or that sleep beckons. When any of these signs are detected, it is very important that certain measures be urgently taken to counter their effects.

PoliticsIf You Were Ambode, What 2 Things Would You Do To Improve Traffic In Lagos? by autojosh(op): 11:33am On Apr 17, 2018
Lagos state is not famous for the best traffic experiences. Unarguably, the traffic situation in the state is what makes the state the most stressful place to reside in Nigeria.

However, the current administration has so far demonstrated an impressive resolve to ameliorate the suffering of the residents brought about by the most horrendous road traffic experiences.

Gov. Akinwumi Ambode has constructed and reconstructed several road transport infrastructure in Lagos. For instance, He has built several many roads, Bridges and Flyovers. He has also constructed lay numerous bys and slip roads.

The Governor has also built and commissioned some ultra-modern bus tops and bus terminals. Hundreds of BRT buses have been acquired. Many more buses are still being acquired.

In addition, he has sanitized many once notorious bus-stops.

https://i63.tinypic.com/104qcyx.jpg

Despite all these, Lagosians still groan over the horrific traffic experience.

It goes without saying: a lot more needs to be done to ease the mass transit in Lagos state.

No matter how much we celebrate the commissioning of new bus terminals and bus stops, the state still craves for far more effective transport infrastructure and policies.

https://i65.tinypic.com/2ugnp5g.jpg

So, if you were in Gov. Ambode’s shoes, what 2 strategic transport infrastructure or policy would you introduce to significantly improve mass transit in Lagos state?

Kindly drop your comment in the comments section.

Hey! You never know, the Governor might be reading this!

Travel14 Essential Safety Tips For Cyclists by autojosh(op):
https://i64.tinypic.com/2hpni2h.jpg

1. Wear A Helmet

Always wear a helmet when riding a bike. It is for your own good. Wearing a helmet protects your head in the event of a fall. So, ensure to always protect your head by wearing a helmet.

2. Do a Quick Bicycle Test

Before you start a ride, check your brakes and your wheels. Make sure that “quick release” wheels are properly secured. Check to see if your bicycle is properly adjusted. Also, check to see if your saddle is in a comfortable position.

3. Don’t Get Distracted

While riding, do not listen to music or talk on the phone. Stay focused. Keep your attention on the road ahead of you. Always look out for likely obstruction in order to avoid them.

4. Obey The Traffic Light

Abide by the traffic light rules, especially the ones that are specific to bicycle riding. Bicycle riding is not exempted from traffic rules. Do not jump red lights. Jumping the traffic light can confuse motorists in the active lane. Their reaction can pose a risk to you.

5. Don’t Cycle on sidewalks or pavement

Riding on sidewalks can be hazardous to pedestrians walking on them. Only ride on them if the pavement is a designated cycle path.

https://i64.tinypic.com/2w4cpj4.jpg

6. Wear brightly-coloured or reflective cloth

Use bright or reflective clothing when cycling. This is necessary especially in places with busy vehicular activities. Night time and in bad weather conditions are also situations when wearing bright or reflective clothing is important.

7. Stay Visible

Stay within the line of vision of other vehicle drivers. Ride in a position where you can see and be seen. If they can see you, they are less likely to hit you.

8. Use Lights When Biking At Night

Use light at night or when riding in low-light conditions. It make the condition of the road ahead of you easily seen. It also makes approaching vehicles to see you.

9. Use Hand Signals

Use hand signals to let drivers and other bicyclists know where you are going.

10. Look And Make Eye Contact

Do not assume drivers will stop, especially at junctions. Look and make eye contact then you know they have seen you.

https://i64.tinypic.com/s66f0x.jpg

11. Ride In The Direction Of Traffic

Go with the flow. Ensure to always ride in the direction of traffic.

12. Don’t weave in and out of traffic

Act like a car. Drivers are used to the patterns of other drivers. Do not weave in and out of traffic. The more predictably you ride, the safer you are. Check for traffic. Be conscious of other vehicles around you.

13. Use your bell

Not all pedestrians can see you. Ring your bell to inform them of your presence.

14. Watch out for car doors

Car doors that open suddenly is one of the most common hazards that motorcyclists face. These situations are difficult to anticipate. The only way to avoid driving into a door that opens suddenly is to assume that every single door in your path will open. So, always leave a door-sized space when passing any stopped car—not just parked ones.

Travel17 Safety Tips For Pedestrians by autojosh(op): 11:55am On Apr 16, 2018
1. Wear bright-colored clothes and reflective materials

If you work in areas with a high concentration of mobile vehicles, it is advised that you always wear bright-colored and reflective clothes. Wearing this sort of apparels makes you easily seen by approaching motorists.

2. Do not wear headphones or talk on a mobile phone while crossing.

Do not wear headphone especially while walking on a busy road. You need all your senses to be alert, especially your eyes and ears.

https://i66.tinypic.com/oivvjn.jpg

3. Make yourself visible to drivers

Make yourself seen by drivers. Walk on the side of the road that is within the line of vision of motorists.

4. Have a torchlight when walking at night

When walking at night, have a flashlight with you. Keep it on and point it ahead of you. This way, approaching vehicles will be hinted of your presence long before they get to the spot where you are.

5. Stay sober

Just as it is dangerous to drive under the influence of intoxicants such as alcohol, walking under the influence of alcohol is just as dangerous. It can impaired your judgement and increase your chance of being hit by a vehicle while walking.

6. Beware of distracted Drivers.

Many things can distract drivers. Drivers can be distracted when they are on the phone, or their eyes are not focused ahead of him; or when they are applying make-up, or starring at the rear view mirror, etc. Once this is noticed, keep a safe distance from vehicles with such kind of drivers.

7. Never assume a vehicle will stop for you

Never assume that a vehicle will stop for you before crossing. Be patient. Wait until the car grinds to a complete halt before crossing a road. Make eye contact with drivers; do not just look at the vehicle. Do not rely solely on pedestrian signals. Look before you cross the road.

8. Walk facing traffic

When walking on the road, try as much as possible to walk in the direction opposite the flow of traffic. This way, oncoming vehicle will be within sight.

9. Look left, right, and left again before crossing a street

This is perhaps the oldest and the most basic rule of crossing the road. Always apply this rule when crossing.

10. Be observant At multiple lane roads before crossing

Before you cross multiple lane roads, look to check if the lanes are free and then take advantage of the best opportunity to cross. Even if one motorist stops, do not presume drivers in other lanes can see you and will stop for you.

11. Always walk on the sidewalk

Always ensure to walk on kerbs. Stay as far away from the main road. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.

https://i66.tinypic.com/hrxx20.jpg

12. Use zebra crossing if one is available

Cross streets using Zebra crossing is one is available. And ensure to wait for the cars to come to a complete stop before crossing.

13. Obey traffic signals

Some traffic lights have signals for pedestrians. Follow their indicators for pedestrians, such as WALK/DON’T WALK signs.

14. Cross the street in a well-lit area at night

When crossing the street or road at night, do it at locations with a lot of light around it. It will make you visible to approaching vehicles.

15. Be observant when standing behind parked cars

Stand clear of parked vehicles especially with one with a driver sitting in it. You never know when they would want to back out.

16. Avoid holding hands with a companion when crossing

It is advised that one should not hold hands with a companion when crossing the road. Indecision with one of the parties on when exactly to cross can have fatal consequences.

17. Stay alert, avoid day-dreaming

A busy street, especially one with mobile vehicles, is no place to day dream while walking. Stay alert at all times when walking.

PoliticsTafawa Balewa Driving A Tractor In His Farm In Bauchi (Throwback Photo) by autojosh(op): 11:36am On Apr 16, 2018
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was the first and only Nigerian Prime-Minister.

Like most Northern leaders of his time, Balewa attended Barewa College, Zaria, and after graduation he was employed as a teacher at the Bauchi Middle School in 1944. He later became an Inspector of Schools for the colonial administration and later entered politics.

When Nigeria became a federation, Balewa was one of the first members of the House of Representatives. At 40, he was made Minister of Works in 1952 and later Minister of Transport. Following the constitutional crisis of 1953, he emerged on the national stage as one of most important leaders from the North.

He was elected as Nigeria’s first and only Prime Minister and assumed office on October 1st, 1960. He thus became the first of the 4 teachers that have ruled Nigeria.
As the Prime-Minister of Nigeria, when he is not riding in his Roll Royce official car to the Cabinet Office about half-a-kilometer away from his official residence, he is seen walking to his office.

His official residence was the house facing the Island Club at Onikan, Lagos. It is now the Lagos office of the Economic Commission for West Africa, ECOWAS.

He was overthrown and murdered in a military coup on January 15, 1966.

Prior to his death, Tafawa Balewa was also a commercial farmer. He maintained a big farm in Bauchi.

TravelRe: The “Lagos Light Rail” Project: 27 Things You Should Know About This Project by autojosh(op): 2:14pm On Apr 12, 2018
TravelThe “Lagos Light Rail” Project: 27 Things You Should Know About This Project by autojosh(op): 2:14pm On Apr 12, 2018
1. In 1983, the idea for a Metroline Project for Lagos state was conceived and proposed. It was proposed by the then governor of Lagos State – Lateef Jakande.

2. Lateef Jakande christened the project the “Metroline Project” and it was to be handled by Interinfra, a French company.

3. The project was estimated to cost N683 million.

4. The first phase of the Metroline Project was expected to be completed in three years. The project commenced, though at a relatively slow pace.

5. A year before the completion date, the Metroline Project was terminated by the Buhari-led Federal Government. The reason given for the cancellation of the project was the unavailability of funds.

6. In December 2003, due to the enormous deficit in mass transit infrastructure, the then Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, announced the plan to revive the Metroline project. The project was renamed the “Lagos Light Rail” Project, also known as the “Eko Rail”.

7. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), founded a year earlier, was saddled with the responsibility of managing the “Lagos Light Rail” Project.

https://i68.tinypic.com/2ps4kk8.jpg

8. The effort to develop the “Lagos Light Rail” Project involved an initial phase of building 2 lines – the Red and Blue lines, with the intention of extending it to 7 lines.

9. There was a five-year delay before the project kicked off. The contract for the project was awarded to the Chinese firm, Civil Engineering Construction Company (CECC). The project cost was valued at$1.2billion. The completion date was set for 2011.

10. After the project commenced, the Lagos State government began seeking for investors that would operate and maintain these lines after the construction. The plan was to award a concession contract to the potential investors of which would last for 25 – 30 years. The concessionaire would also be involved in the design and construction of the infrastructure relating to the operation and maintenance of the lines.

11. A loan of $200 million was obtained, by the Lagos state government from the World Bank for the completion of the Light Rail Project and other infrastructure projects.

12. The Blue line of the “Lagos Light Rail” Project is expected to begin at Marina on Lagos Island and extend to Okokomaiko. This particular line was expected to be entirely funded by the Lagos State Government.

13. The total length of the Blue line (Okokomaiko to Marina) is 27km (17 miles). It comprises a total of 13 stations namely Marina, Ebute Ero, Iddo, Iganmu, Alaba, Mile 2, Festac, Alakija, Trade Fair station, Volkswagen station, LASU and the Okokomaiko station.

14. The total length of the Red line is expected to extend from Agbado to Marina via Iddo and Murtala Mohammed International Airport). It will span 31km (20 Miles),

15. A journey along the Blue line is approximated for 35 minutes.

16. The Blue line is expected be constructed at the cost of about N70 billion.

17. The Blue line shares 3 stations with the Red line.

18. The Red line runs precisely from Marina to Agbado. Interestingly, the line will share the right-of-way of the Lagos–Kano Standard Gauge Railway.

19. The Red extension (to local and international wings of the Airport) – 6km, Green (Marina to proposed Lekki Airport) – 26km, Yellow (Otta to Iddo) – 34km, Purple (Redemption Camp to Ojo) – 60km, Orange (Redemption Camp to Marina) – 42km and Brown (Mile 12 to Marina) – 20km.

20. Upon completion, the Blue and Red lines are expected to carry 1.6 million passengers daily.

21. The construction of the other 5 lines will commence after the blue and red lines have been completed.

22. The other 5 lines are expected to extend to places like the local and international wings of the Muritala Muhammad Airport, Ikeja; the proposed Lekki Airport; Otta; the Redemption Camp and Mile 12.

23. The trains to be initially used for the Lagos Light Rail project were to be acquired from Canada by the Fashola-led administration. These were the controversial “fairly-used” H5 series subway trains formerly used by the Toronto Transport Commission (TTC).

Travel7 Things You Cannot Predict When Driving In Lagos by autojosh(op): 10:19am On Apr 12, 2018
When driving in Lagos – anything can happen.

In Lagos, driving is always an adventure that is laden with a lot of unpredictability.

Interestingly, there are so many things we experience while diving around Lagos that cannot be predetermined.  One can only hope for one’s safety and security.

Anyway, here are some of those experiences that can happen on us as we travel around on Lagos roads.

Traffic

It is almost impossible to predict the Lagos traffic scenario you will encounter as you drive out. You can barely correctly predict how the traffic will turn out.

For instance, at points where you believe that traffic would be light, you just end up finding a gridlock there. Weekends are even more notorious. On weekends, you would expect the roads to be free, however, such expectations often turn out to be wishful thinking.

It is because of this that it is often advised that in order to keep up with schedules, one should endeavor to leave for an appointment an hour or two ahead of time.

Police Check-Point

Coming across a police checkpoint is almost inevitable. The police are very creative in concealing their checkpoints at places that you least expect. Especially at places where you run into them suddenly.

The presence of police-check points is a source of worry even to the most law-abiding citizens. This so because, no matter how free of offence you are, the police at check points always find a way to delay and waste your time.

Okada/ Keke Marwa

“Okada” and “Keke Marwa” are two necessary traffic nuisances. Their riders are notorious for recklessness on the road. They typically struggle for the right of way with vehicles that are a hundred times their sizes.

Their appearances within the line of vision of car drivers are often unpredictable. They suddenly appear from your blind side and narrowly escape being knocked down by you. Collision with them are often averted due to the very functional brakes and  quick reflexes of the drivers of the larger vehicles.

Potholes and Manholes

Potholes have become inevitable on roads in Lagos. Hitting a pothole, while driving in Lagos, is almost as certain as day and night. As you drive, you know you will hit a pothole; however, the question is, when and where it will happen?

Indeed, it is always unpredictable where a pothole or a manhole will show up on the roads.

Someone once likened driving in Lagos to playing a video game. You know your nemesis will appear, but where and when is what you cannot predict.

Tax/ Revenue Collectors

If there is any State in Nigeria, or perhaps in Africa, that is enormously creative in instituting new revenue systems, it is Lagos state.

One can drive on Lagos state only to encounter task force or revenue collecting agents for levies you never knew existed.

They can collect levies for the most ridiculous reasons. For instance, you can be levied for branding your vehicles, for using a company car, for having an AC in your car, for running on half tank, for using a particular colour for your car, for having a female companion in your car, etc.

One-Way Traffic

In Lagos, nothing scares motorists than being apprehended by the authorities for inadvertently driving into a road that is “One-Way”.

Indeed, Lagos is notorious for having “One-Way” roads, but with absolutely no road signs to indicate so.

However, what is unpredictable in all of these is that, roads designated as one way can appear overnight. In other words, a particular road that was in no way One-Way the previous day, can suddenly be designated as one way the following day. And there will be no road sign to announce the new status.

The Cause Of A Traffic Gridlock

All of a sudden, you run into a long traffic queue or gridlock. Slowly, you drive patiently and cautiously until you get to the end of the traffic queue. The reason for the long queue is often not something that you would have been able to predict. It could be a broken down vehicle. It could be some men at work. It could be a bad spot on the road. It could be caused by the activities of Agberos. It could be a police checkpoint. It could even be caused by absolutely nothing.

TravelBuilding Bus-Stops & Terminals; Is It Solving The Transport Challenge Of Lagos? by autojosh(op): 9:49am On Apr 12, 2018
https://i65.tinypic.com/20pvs5w.jpg

Anyone traveling in the evenings along most major roads in Lagos would notice one thing: huge crowds of stranded commuters at bus stops waiting for the arrival of available commercial buses.

Many of these commuters are stranded for hours at the various bus stops, due to the non-arrival of available commercial vehicles. This often leads to many Lagosians arriving home late from work.

https://i67.tinypic.com/15g33h5.jpg

In recent times, focus by the current administration has been on the road transport infrastructure.

There have been projects focused towards the reconstruction and rebranding of bus stops, transport interchanges, and other road traffic infrastructure. In addition, hundreds of brand new BRT buses have been introduced into the system. Still, with all these, coupled with the Danfos, Keke Marwas, Okadas, etc, – demand still exceeds supply.

Indeed, all these projects initiated by the current administration are fantastic and laudable ones.

However, with the huge number of stranded commuters we see on the roads, it would appear that the solution to the Lagos state transportation challenge goes beyond constructing fancy bus terminals and transport interchanges.

Perhaps, other modes of mass transport should be given urgent attention in order to decongest the roads.

https://i65.tinypic.com/fbb5av.jpg

By the way, what exactly is the reason for the delay in the completion of the Lagos light rail project?

What about the Lagos Cable Car Project instituted by the Fashola administration?

Why isn’t the same urgent attention given to the inland waterways transport system?

Why can’t all these systems be given the same degree of urgent attention as the one given to Bus stops, terminals and interchanges?

Car Talk2 Car Struggles We Went Through That Kids Of Nowadays Won’t Understand by autojosh(op): 6:21am On Apr 12, 2018
We all know that the only thing that is constant in life is change. As time goes, a lot of things in the world change. The automobile world isn’t left out in these changes. A lot of changes have occurred. Kids of today won’t understand how difficult these two things were for the kids those days.

1. Window crank handle:

Kids of nowadays don’t know what we went through just to roll the car windows up or down. Even to play with them was tiring because it will likely consume all your energy. Today, technology has made it easy; the electric window is here. Just hit on a button and the work is done. That’s what gives them the guts to always play with the windows anyhow.

https://i67.tinypic.com/70hs46.jpg

2. Car Cassette tapes:

Back in those days, we had nothing like the USB or CD to play music from. We only had this cassette tapes. We couldn’t easily choose our hit tracks or even shuffle tracks as we can easily do today. Today’s kids don’t know the struggle of having to wind the cassette film with a pencil when it became unraveled.

Most annoyingly, the tape can get intertwined along the way. It was really a tough job fixing it.
Kids of today will just use AUX cable to directly play their ‘Manya‘ by Wizkid from their phone. Who born you to get phone those days.

TravelWhy Is Trading And Other Activities Allowed On Railway Tracks In Lagos? by autojosh(op): 2:24pm On Apr 11, 2018
Almost every part of Lagos have been converted into a marketplace. On roadsides, ontop of pedestrian bridges, inside Molues, in traffic, etc., everywhere is a market.

This unregulated commercialization of every spot in Lagos is what gives Lagos its rowdy outlook.

Indeed, this is what prompted the Lagos state government to establish several task forces with the objective of riding the state of trading at these unusual spots.

However, there is a location that besides being illegal, it also poses an enormous risk to the traders who ply their trades there. It is on railway tracks.

https://i63.tinypic.com/1z7vv7.jpg

It common for railway tracks, especially in the Lagos area, to have convergences of traders selling all manner of goods. These locations are typically Mecca of some sort for those in search of “Okrika” clothes and other used and substandard wares to buy.

Every day, traders and their customers turn these locations to huge markets.

Some examples of railway track locations in Lagos with huge market activities are Oshodi, Mushin, Ikeja-Along, Yaba bus-stop, etc.

Tragically, this unusual and very risky trading practice has led to the death of some people, especially those who were not quick enough to depart the scene for an oncoming train.

In addition, train trips that has been scheduled to arrive at its destinations at a particular time are sometimes disrupted or delayed because it would be halted for longer than necessary for these traders to clear their wares from the track before it would continue its journey.

Sometimes, some people at these railway marketplaces have made fatal judgments forgetting that trains are not as controllable as cars that can be stopped at will.

https://i67.tinypic.com/a4oqoz.jpg

Interestingly, during the administration of Governor Babatunde Fashola, there was a ban on trading on railway tracks. This ban was vigorously enforced at the time. However, the enforcement of that ban appears to have been relaxed in the current administration.

It gets even more curious, when one discovered that certain task forces are deployed to some of these locations to collect revenues from the illegal traders at these railway track marketplaces.

Perhaps, this is the reason why this high-risk illegality persists on our railway tracks.

Car TalkWhich Of These Cars That Ruled Nigeria In The Past Was Your Favourite? by autojosh(op): 3:48pm On Apr 10, 2018
Today, it is the Corollas, Civics, KIA brands, Lexus, Hyundai, etc.

It was not always like so. Prior to the current dispensation, in Nigeria, other car brands reigned supreme. They were the popular cars of choice.

While some of these car brands series evolved and stood the test of time, some others simply faded out of attention due to their inability to withstand competition or perhaps bad business management on the part of the manufacturers.

Autojosh presents some popular auto brands that were the brands of choice before the year 2000.

So, which of them was your favourite?

PoliticsObafemi Awolowo’s Mercedes Benz Used For His Presidential Campaigns by autojosh(op): 12:33pm On Apr 10, 2018
Obafemi Awolowo was a Nigerian nationalist and political leader. He played very important roles in Nigeria’s quest for independence. He also played key parts in the First and Second Republics.

He was the first premier of the Western Region and later federal commissioner for finance. He was also the Vice Chairman of the Federal Executive Council during the Gowon administration.

He was also the official Leader of the Opposition in the federal parliament to the Tafawa Balewa government from 1959 to 1963.

https://i64.tinypic.com/aucthc.jpg

The man was a man of many firsts. For instance, He was the first Leader of Government Business and Minister of Local Government and Finance, and first Premier of the Western Region under Nigeria’s parliamentary system, from 1952 to 1959.

On three occasions, Awolowo made attempts at the country’s presidency.

Much of the progressive social legislation that has made Nigeria a modern nation is credited to him.

In recognition of all these, Awolowo was the first individual in the modern era to be named “Leader of the Yorubas” (Asiwaju Awon Yoruba or Asiwaju Omo Oodua).

On 9 May 1987, he died at his Ikenne home. He was aged 78.

A part of his Ikenne home, the Efunyela Hall, was made a museum to commemorate the life and times of this sage. His widow, H.I.D Awolowo, commissioned the museum on August 4, 1989.

Part of the items on display in the museum is an eight-sitter grey Mercedes 230.6.

The Mercedes Benz was used by Awolowo to travel across the country during his electioneering campaign in 1979 and 1983. The car was bought in 1970.
