solasoulmusic:Your location and brand of vehicle? If you are in lagos ,my contact is on my signature and workshop is @ Yaba |
okoroemeka:It not european alone but all manufacturer are going towards hi-tech and more sophistication and there nothing anybody can do to stop this . .What is actually driving the vehicle manufacturer towards groundbreaking innovation towards electrical and computers are largely due to ; strict and safety emissions demand from government agency (EPA) . The mechanical spare parts are largely replaced with electrical and computer to meet with the ever changing emissions standard.Even the so- called non- complicated Toyota after crossing to the model year 2012 and above are almost at par with the European technologywise ,complex CAN network , more computer modules added and even much more electrical stuff .Do you know that the out of the Japanese brand the so -called simple Toyota is one of early adopters of the groundbreaking technology innovation in world of AC ;the variable displacement compressor ( VDC ) .So for how long will our beloved technician keep runing away from electrical and even discouraging their customer away from using the sophisticated cars but to forever stick to uber corolla ?? ![]() So it now the duty of technician to keep learning to meet up with the evolving technologies or fizzle out . |
samuelson06:See if u can see any presence of water / coolant around the cooling system ( radiators and hose ) and if it not visible you will need to visit a technician with special tool to check for u . |
samuelson06:Leakage |
awesome9ja:To refill a catalyst ?? .kindly note that if the cat is not matched with the the correct one ,it will cause restriction for the exhaust stream .it is better if the exhaust is left hollow without a cat than choking up the exhaust with wrong spec of cat that will have bad repercussions on your engine later on . |
tetralogyfallot:Yes and no .The only thing indication of black smoke is pointer of "rich mixture "or "rich signal " which are two separate entities and the root cause can fill a page of booklet ,which is why it not wise to listen to "beer palour guess talkers " telling u to "change this change that " without any troubleshooting of the problem . Best bet is to take the car your car to a professional to dig out the issue . |
bliss11:Yes and No. it is hard for anybody to know this except the person that has done his due diligence on the car. .Find a good tech to check the transmission oil level and see if it related to your issue. |
OgaKazeem:Scot Kilmer fixing German car indeed i can't even recommend him to fix my baby European car toy ![]() |
okoroemeka:I have handled alot of German vehicle and my experience is that you don't even need any Bosch scanner to have access to all the modules on the vehicle network ,most professional scanner eg autel , launch etc can handle them well with ease, personally i own an oem benz star scanner i rarely use it unless i want to do complex function , my autel maxisys will suffice for basic stuff. .And i need to further emphasis that "scanner" are mere data retrieval tools and useless if u don't have the core foundational skill and the core skill is knowledge of principle of operation of how stuff works and basic troubleshooting skill and u will need to have the some foundation knowledge of sciences especially electrical, mechanics ,thermodynamics etc to understand all these jargon u will read about in all the workshop manual cos modern vehicle technology has upgraded over the years . For instance now , there is a thread (https://www.nairaland.com/6661079/speedometer-not-reading-honda-pilot) and the vehicle in question is still a Japanese brand that average nigeria feel that it not complicated and for us ,inspite of the fact that i describe to the op of this thread vividly the logic route of the signal flow to the speedometer that is not working so that his technician can know have idea of where and what to troubleshoot, he still didn't get it except revert to their crude way of "part throwing to solve problem " Why ? he lack the foundation core skill .And for the reason our local technician are still able to get more success with the Japanese brand than the european is cos of less signal paths routes and less modules and by the time u throw some few parts to the problem one of them will purportedly fix the issue unlike the European that that has more modules and more signal path routes ," how many parts u want to throw that will fix the problem unless u want add more problem to the original problem ![]() So wether European,American, jap or even chinko troubleshooting basics still remain the same ,nothing as change .My saying still remains : You can't troubleshoot what you don't understand Also the auto repair industry is not attractive and rewarding enough to keep the smarts and bright one to stay , the smarts one will prefer to go for for attractive sector eg medicine or IT where their input and value will be rewarded correspondingly unlike auto where customer pay peanuts for highly skill troubleshooting and repair job , so the category of skilled labour left in the industries are "kazeems" so how do u expect a semi illiterate artisan to understand basic signal flow fundamental talkless of troubleshooting CAN network system that modern vehicle architect are made of .Average vehicle owners know the recommended place that their vehicle issue will get fixed permanently but they will prefer to tow the line of the kazeems so it wen things get out of hands they will now start seeking helps from forums ![]() So the problem we have is problem of knowledge gap and the poor rewarding system of auto industry .maybe wen the industry start get rewarding enough , maybe the bright ones will stay . ![]() |
OgaKazeem:Nice one
|
Proxyhandsome:If you still have the problem of overheating before changing the water pump and the issue still persist then the root of the problem has not been fished out . Diagnosing overheating has it own procedure , start by looking for technician with cooling system pressure tester to check for internal and external leak . |
RealSleek:Seems u don't get it .That model of vehicle is not designed to use that mechanical thermostat to cut the ac ( that is design of modern vehicle ac except some early model Ford that still uses thermostat ) ,the ac system is basically computer controlled i e by the ecu . To introduce thermostat for control of ac , u will need to take the control from the ecu and run the ac independent of the whole vehicle network which will introduc bigger issue . Also ,The tripping off of the ac that the owner is experiencing is being done by the ecu so as to protect the compressor and the solution to the problem should be towards finding out why and what the ecu is seeing that it doesn't like and not about introducing external parts to solve problem that has not been deciphered. Moral of this epistle: 1. Know thy opponent :it is good to have the overall view of what u dealing with before u launch the attack 2. Don't treat the symptoms ,go for the root cause .end of story |
RealSleek:Sorry for derailing your thread , but let be opened for learning cos introducing thermostat as suggested that is not part of the original design will mandate disconnetcting the ac system from the network creating other problem elsewhere that is why it good to address root cause . I will throw more light on this same issue on my ac thread later on . |
Peppermintflav:You are right about the evaporator being frozen but noting like thermostat in that model design, what u have there is evaporator temperature sensor .So the root cause is not thermostat but something else that is restricting air flow to the evaporator . |
Jamal64:Is the engine cranking ie rolling or not . |
sheantip:The root cause is air flow or restrictions due to moisture in the txv. A good technician will start the diagnostic process by using a manifold Guage to analyze the problem before launching for the repair . |
Over the years, our mechanics have succeeded in not only abusing naija vehicles alone even go to extent of poisoning vehicle owners minds with lot of ignorance that that they even know what is normal again ![]() |
johnnobles:According to the design of that vehicle model, the input signal to the speedometer readout is the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) located around the transmission assembly doesn't have to do wether the 4wheel drive is available or not . Responsibility of a good technician is to have done all his homework to confirm the integrity of all signal around that circuitry and even confirm the instrument cluster module to make the right call . U will need to look out for technician that can do thorough troubleshooting to find the culprit . Referring to question of if it ok to be driving with speedometer not working : it depends solely on others signal that might be affected and not visible to u in the course of loss of speedometer signal . Accurate answer depend on outcome of troubleshooting. |
Part of some late model vehicle computer thermal management strategy is to continue to monitor the temperature even wen the vehicle has already been switched off and make appropriate actuation if necessary which is why it possible to see some fans coming up after the vehicle has been switched off .It also possible to to be some faults in the electrical systems or bad computer that might be responsible . However repair method of average nigerian and our - so -called modern technicians to vehicle issues to be on lookout one- size -fit- all approach to problem by looking for that lone "silver bullets" all over the internet and forums for the "supposed" solution to the problem.Unfortunately using silve bullet approach might leave you disappointed even on same brand of vehicle cos same symptoms doesn't automatically translate to same root cause . Solution is get the better understandong of the theory and practical design of your own vehicle operation before u can dig tru the troubleshooting and fish out the culprit. The reality is this : You can't troubleshoot what u don't understand |
Hayour92:Overheating of coil , look for reasonable technician to troubleshoot for intermittent contact |
sheantip:You will need to choose your word carefully to avoid further confusion , the bolded phrase above, do u mean to refer to the intensity of "cold air "or the "blower air" cos they are different entity |
RealSleek:Bad advice. Learn to address issue from the root instead of abusing the stock design . By adding a thermostat that is not part of original design , u will be creating additional problems to the existing one. |
homeboy205:Vacuuming is not the same thing with flushing ?they are totally different processes ,vacuuming involves creating environmental condition that will remove moisture from the system using vaccum machine and manifold Guage while flushing is process of removing dirts and debris and it involves making of flushing kits ,flushing solvent and shop air . |
Sebytec:Don't reuse the old condenser cos technically a condenser cannot be flushed just go ahead to change it . The grinding is indication of murdered compressor that got grounded cos of non adherence to standard practice in course installation. People are too quick to blame the refrigerant brand ,the reality is refrigerant brand certified by the SON are still ok for use what about the cleanliness of the ac system cos it takes small very small minute of dirts and moisture to kill a compressor especially the VDC type And during flushing , what is methof procedure adopted, what kind of solvent is being used to flush ? if it flushing solvent that leaves residue behind after use and the style of flushing is ladipo style then I am afraid don't expect the ac compressor to last . What about the expansion valve, is it the right one that match the compressor ? Also is the refrigerant and oil measured to reflect the manufacturer recommendation cos not using the right quantity is enough to kill the compressor. Finally the skill set of the technician goes a long way to determine the success of the installation,is he well equipped, can he analyze manifold Guage data , does he understand the concept of pressure temperature relation of ac system ,doesn he understand basic thermodynamics concept ? Unfortunately the reality on ground vehicle owners are having problem cos of the skill level of most of our technicians , they should not allowed to touch a refrigerant talkless of refilling ac system if it were to be a sane clime cos u can't fix what u don't understand cos the basic of ac is basic understanding of thermodynamics systems All these factors are what will contribute to longevity of any ac installation . |
olumzzz:Johnsens without stopping leak is ok ,Refrigerant with stop leak is a no no cos ac manufacturer strongly warns against using stop leaks additives Don't introduce any third party solvent not recommended by the manufacturer, all this wrong additives goes a long way in murdering your compressor . |
MARKone:Seems u missing some points here : what i am referring to is no- catalysts or missing cat which will never affect performance not Compromised or bad cat |
Mottomata:Nice information however the bolded statement is incorrect . Manufacturer will not even bother to put cat on Vehicle made for countries without strict emissions law eg nigeria and some Asians countries. U can even checkout this; lot of toyota yaris from Elizade , Honda civic from Honda place kia and Hyundai sold from Dana doesn't even come with cat and oxygen sensors. So cat is strictly for emissions purposes and doesn't concern performance issue on vehicles . |
indormitable:What is the model year and engine code of your golf 5 cos u can't jsut use anyhow synthetic oil in market .there is still specified synthetic oil for various model of engine . |
So if you see your compressor is perpetually cycling off and on ,in most cases the evaporator has gotten near 0 degrees due to restricted airflow and the control module is purposely turning it off the ac to prevent freezing of the evaporator and the ac pipes thereby protecting your compressor from effect of frozen evaporator ,which now will now takes us to the next question: How can a restricted airflow to the evaporator damage a compressor |
Manufacturers have already gone ahead to prevent freezing even the airflow is restricted by designing the ac modules to trigger off the compressor whenever the evaporator temperature is tending towards 0 degrees centigrade by use of the evaporator temperature sensor . However your ac can still freeze if there are faulty evaporator temperature sensor or wrong use of ac thermostat and setting it below 0 degree done by some local ac technicians
|
9icetoo:Yes but to put it in detail explanation: poor airflow will drop the evaporator saturation temperature (boiling point) below 0 centigrade and will cause the air around the evaporator to freeze and this freezing will even extend up to the suction hose as show in pix below .
|
Peppermintflav:Exactly ,the most expensive repair will be to the compressor but that is not exactly how it will damage the compressor . I will try to discuss how a clogged evaporator can destroy compressor in subsequent page. Kudos to you, nice attempt . |
.So for how long will our beloved technician keep runing away from electrical and even discouraging their customer away from using the sophisticated cars but to forever stick to uber corolla ??
.kindly note that if the cat is not matched with the the correct one ,it will cause restriction for the exhaust stream .it is better if the exhaust is left hollow without a cat than choking up the exhaust with wrong spec of cat that will have bad repercussions on your engine later on .
,which is why it not wise to listen to "beer palour guess talkers " telling u to "change this change that " without any troubleshooting of the problem
