ice4u999: Aventures, for accuracy, how long is a soil test really good for? Can one use a result from a soil test done 2-3 years ago? My other question is, do I need to know the type of structure I want to erect before carry out a soil test or the test can be done and then give my structural engineer whenever I am ready? Sometimes ago I was studying in failed foundation repair, underpinning and the likes, I did a pile for an international trained petroleum drilling engineer and he gave a lot of journals and books to read. Along the line I discovered that one of the reason for foundation failure is not just a design error or construction issues, it could be a change in soil formation over a very long time. Just to buttress this point some few years back an NLder introduced me to a client in Gbagada for a structural integrity inspection of a house he bought, the house was built years back on a pad foundation, after about 30yrs it is now showing some fatigue, after investigation the house is to be pulled down because the formation underneath has changed and can no longer bear the load with pad fdn. Back to tour question 2-3yrs not too long for a soil test in my own opinion, but if your structural engineer is not comfortable with it, I all advice you do a fresh one that he would coordinate and ensure it is properly done. |

KolaShangOne: ALL soil tests that I have seen even on dry land requires you to remove top soil. It is like a constant. I'm sure @EgunMogaji can remember when me and him discussed it during his build.
Also, the land shouldn't be filled before foundation walls are done. A Raft shouldn't sit on imported sand. Sir, I disagree with your last statement. Raft can sit comfortably on imported soil. There are some cases where the soil test report can recommend soil improvement and then shallow foundation instead of pile. Now, soil improvement is a process whereby you remove the natural top soil, vegetations, peat to a recommended level then fill and make the site up with a recommended imported filling material, you will either wait for natural compaction or make use of a vibratory axial roller with a recommended tonnage to compact and the do your compaction test. Thereafter your raft can be built. (I refer u to my thread on Osapa London project) Also this is the process required for cellular raft and reinforced concrete road. At the least I have dine this for a 2 storey building and 2 reinforced concrete roads. |

KolaShangOne: For discuss sake, sometimes last week, i was just moving around my site and came across this site..
Pic attached.
Clearly, the Engineer was filling this swamp land with laterite prior to Foundation. The foundation will be built on this filled 'imported' sand.
The problem with this is that:
-Vegetation was not removed
-Under this vegetation we have about 400-600mm depth of black muddy soil which should also have been removed.
I asked the Engineer If he could do remove the top soil (in a friendly way) but he said there's no need as time will be wasted, labour fees will also be increased and this is how they do it in Ajah where he comes from.
Engineers and Enthusiasts, What do you think? Have you adopted this method of filling and building on the sand? wonders shall not end. The house will stand for a while but will surely settle differentially. |

Anyways, a good quality gloss paint will take care of that.
PVC should actually be banned from the market. I concur with you sir absolutely. I have done External POP fascial and ceiling screened with external screening material painted with gloss, years counting and they are still functional and neat. |

KolaShangOne: I don't think there's any solution to that. There's just no water.
Where I stayed in Abia, we didn't have water too so the village people construct underground water bunkers that save water during the rainy season and it lasts them all through the dry season. There is virtually no place on earth you can get water (my opinion) what varies is depth, some depth are very deep and invariably hardly could individual afford such a borehole. I stand to be corrected |

Rubbiish: @bold i thought roof beam are only for external walls? Do they also go round internal walls? The pics posted by Egunmogaji say its all. Your roof beam is suppose to be a replica of your floor beam. The importance is to make your roof load transferred to the foundation via structural members. Thereby making the block work to serve as partitioning member only. |

EgunMogaji: How about columns? Columns is optional in bungalow except for the aesthetic columns. But in a water Log area it is essential. From Experience over time I discovered that just few columns externally around bungalow built on clay formation (so called firm ground) is advantageous. Clay has anomalous behavior I:e during raining season it expands and when the dry seasons comes it shrinks(that is why when you fill your foundation with laterite and leave if for a while you will see some crack lines all over) this behavior sometimes responsible for perennial cracks in some build. So I advice if anyone can afford it put a capping beam at fdn level, put columns externally and chain your lintel, that makes your bungalow a little framed structure that can restrict the effect of clay behavior. Better soup na money kill am. |

ceelog: Please builders, engineers and clients permit me to ask these questions for a robust discussion. It concerns "Chaining or not Chaining the upper floor lintel".
I am sure comments have been made on this topic previously but permit me to be specific in my request for knowledge.
1. If I decide NOT to "chain or tie" all lintel beams but only place the lintels on door/windows (but will still do a roof beam), is that against building codes or industry best practices?
2. I know Skimanski, one of the best in the business adopts a "no lintel window" but uses the roof beam as "lintel" which produces very tall windows which I admire. I am a bit swayed to choose that style of his as I think the cost saved not "chaining a lintel round the build" can be effectively put into making and fortifying tall windows. I sometimes perceive such windows might be more vulnerable (even with burglaries) to theft and that uninterrupted blocks of 12coaches might be weaker. But is it allowed by building codes?
I call on @aventures @abdulwastecx @spyder880 @Kolashangone @Skimanski @darenyx @diodarves @daboomb (and all builders and engineers I can't remember right now) to help me take the right decision.
Thanks all and God bless. To the best of my Knowledge, if you are going to have a roof beam that will run all around the major wall within the house short lintels is perfectly OK, but if your roof beam is external only then it is good to have a chained lintel. On the ground floor, you can do a short lintel if your decking will have adequate beams all around. If you are doing bungalow, chaining your lintel is not negotiable |

Micky4rl: I hate to mention names but in this case, the deed has been done. I also bought a plot of land in one of Adron's estate and it was only after I'd paid close to 2 million naira for the plot that they told me of the extra charges amounting to almost 1.25 million naira.
In all honesty, for the total amount paid I could have bought something just as good in Lagos with clear terms and conditions clearly laid out before money changes hands.
Very important lesson I learnt is not to take anything for face value and probe for the finer details before parting with my hard earned money.
Be careful out there brothers !!! worst part of them is that they won't allocate your land until you are ready to build, their Infrastructure is very poor. |

diordaves: Adventures and Spyder880, why would the cost be higher? Frame structure approach is building the columns first before block setting right? Is it not the same number of columns with frame approach and block setting approach? Or is the number of columns more with frame approach?
For example if the architectural drawings are 24 columns, would you necessary increase the columns due to frame approach? Then the cost should be same as you still would construct 24 columns or even cheaper as you could save on wood with build and transfer.
Do you think I'm not getting the nitty gritty of it all? If yes, please educate because frame approach is a very beautiful and practical method for budget control and phased building. sir, in frame structure you will need four planks to form each column with a lot more bracing, compare to the other method where you will need two or even one , you will need planks for the soffit of beam but in the other way you don't. Also the concrete is more compacted and you can even vibrate it well. The difference is minimal any way. |

abdulwastecx: Even bungalows can be built using system of frame structure. The standard way to build any building with suspended floor is through reinforced concrete framing where the columns, beams and the slab are built before the partition walls are added to the construction later. This method of construction enable the structural members to be properly cured, have adequate dimension ( especially beams) and enable the end conditions ( joint between beams and columns to be achieved but it has the advantage of lack of proper bonding between the columns and the adjoining walls but such shortcomings can corrected using a binder Great Lecture I concur in totality. Also in future it makes restructuring easier. |

spyder880: Framed structures are faster to build, with few advantages over the block+frame structures, but the cost of materials like wood will increase, many clients looks to reduce building cost so might not agree to it. Well said sir. carpentry labour could be a bit higher. You need a very good carpenter that is technically inclined. It also require more supervision effort. |

EgunMogaji: Aventures, Spyder880, Skimanski, KolaShangOne, etc
Question for you guys.
I'm not sure that I've ever seen you guys build a 2 story house without building the lower floor partitions first. Is there a reason why you do not build the pillars and then deck before building out the partitions?
Thanks. There are lots of this showcase on here https://www.nairaland.com/2522848/construction-medium-high-rise-multi the process may be a little costlier than the conventional way but it has advantage of speed, and adequate structural members sizes. It is advisable to use the method if you are going multiple floors so that your columns can have adequate strength for the building loads. |

Disadvantage of R Require lots of water for concrete works Tendency to have cracking.
Advantage of N Watering is friendly any time before complete curing. Hardly you experience cracking
Disadvantage of N Slow construction work Curing is slow Nice info. R grade is also good for raft beam and concrete work in jobs like piles etc. |

hyperflex: I'm a very picky guy. I have gone 2 - 3yrs without relationship but I got girls I call if I have to have sex. I have shied away from banging lagos girls anyhow. Anyway that's not the bone of contention.
I lost my job some years back and for the next years after I was trying to get back into the work force but I only met closed doors and rejection. So I have not been able to make much money to get some things done for myself. I decided to stay with a cousin who's got an apartment. Don't even ask if I have a car lol. Sometime in 2016 I decided to start my own entertainment brand. It's been lethargic because of funds by I am not losing focus. I'm trying to get sponsors. I don't want to mention name of the brand so tomorrow when it blows up someone won't come and cast me with this post. Lol
People are always asking for my girlfriend and for me I believe in being responsible and being able to cater and make your woman shine. If you can't make her better than you met her just leave her. So I stayed away from dating as I also have a soft heart when I fall in love. Other times I am indifferent. I don't just fall for anyone like I said I'm picky but once I pick I know I am in trouble because I will be weak for her.
I met this cute girl on twitter. She was so vibrant and happy. I mean a girl so cute with such high vibes. I felt strong about her immediately. Got her number, went on WhatsApp, chat and chat, WhatsApp videos. It was the best thing that happened to me at the time (September ending last year). She has her own hustle going. So she makes money for herself. As I got to know her I realised behind the big smiles and jovial nature is a girl who hides her fears and pains. You could hurt her and she'd act like it's nothing.
While I was toasting her (still toasting) she told me how her ex whos was very generous to her turned out to be a married man with kids and she only got to know when she went visiting him. I asked her what she did. She said she turned around and left. There n then I knew she internalised a lot.
In summary, we met only once. She came to where I stayed at my cousin's. We had this brief fling that day. After she left everything went south since then. The WhatsApp calls have reduced to nothing, she doesn't talk to me in what I think is a deliberate act to ignore me. She tells me she likes me, she comes up with excuses why our dating won't work. I keep nullifying it. I want to think it's a money thing. Her exes were made men with cars n all. I love her like my life depends on her. I feel I should let her be but my heart can't take it. I have taken advise from some places but I just wanna drop it here one time. I want her so bad. I don't think I could ever hurt her. I don't even wanna camp her or anything. I just want her to show me the girl I tripped for. I call her now she cuts me off with any excuse like she's eating and all that stuff girls do when they don't want a guy. I wanna forgot her but I think I still have a shot at this. I love her so much. Maybe I just need to find someone who cares but who? The lady Just needed your destiny and she has collected, so she has no biz with you again. She is hunting for another one. Such a lady is an agent of devil. Beware of Pre marital sex it ruins life. |

Science/Technology › Re: How To Build A Quadcopter by Aventures(m): 12:19pm On Jan 02, 2018 |
RCDIY: A quadcopter, also called a quadrotor helicopter or quadrotor, is basically a multi-blade helicopter that is lifted and propelled by four rotors. Quadcopters are classified as rotorcraft, as opposed to fixed-wing aircraft, because their lift is generated by a set of vertically oriented propellers.
Quadcopters generally use two pairs of identical fixed pitched propellers; two clockwise (CW) and two counterclockwise (CCW) se. These use independent variation of the speed of each rotor to achieve control. By changing the speed of each rotor it is possible to specifically generate a desired total thrust; to locate for the centre of thrust both laterally and longitudinally; and to create a desired total torque, or turning force.
Quadcopters are not new. There are several models on sale from various vendors. Sizes range from tiny machines that can fit into a man's pocket to full-sized models able to lift a full grown man. These are either flown for fun or used to make aerial photography.
Building a quadcopter on your own is quite an interesting project and requires a lot of work. Basic soldering skills is an advantage. I can tell since I have made several models.
Basically you would need the following: Frame (Different sizes available) Motors (Different sizes here too) Propellers ESCs Battery Transmitter Receiver Battery charger
The idea of this thread is to guide and provide support to interested persons from parts acquisition through to the actually working model.
Hopefully, we can get some machines to fly and have lots of fun in the process. Thanks for this info, very educative and it is something that can enhance the Interest of our children in science and technology. Also, it can strengthen parents - children bond she. you spend quality time together to build this. please where can I get this materials , I will like to buy. Thanks in advance |

( there will be no foul odor)
@diordave and hajji i will surely post the pics here. Infact i dont know you did same before although that is the standard
To say the truth that is the way standard suckways/safety tank should be , check building construction book you will find it there....hafold seeley i beleived it should be there or any other building construction book @ topsy, has said it all, this can best work at a very dry land where the water table level is far down, not in a terrain where the water level is very high. The water ingress from soak away pit will find its way into your septic tank at the peak of raining season yoi r soak away pit would become a well rather than receiving water from septic tank, it will send water to your septic tank. Alternatively,/in a water logged area (my own opinion) is to have a septic tank with 3 baffle wall (that makes your septic tank to be 3 compartment) the effluent that will come out of the tank after passing thru the 3 compartment would be semi clean and can be channel directly into public drain( This is not acceptable by Government law), it is expected that such water should be treated and disinfected before passing it to public drain or re-use. I hope to post a design of such we did at Lekki by tomorrow |
