In Ambode's quest to destroy anything related to Fashola. Part of what made Fashola popular in Lagos was this fixing of road by direct labour( Works department), Ambode came in, sacked the head and either did not replace him, replaced him with a knuckle head or did not empower the new guy.
They should sell it for $1 with the following conditions
-The buy should give a timeline for reviving to production level -A plan to train Nigerian engineers -A plan for CSR to prevent the problems that occurred in the South South States.
simiolu1: The thing about not being explicit in written communication is that a whole lot of people will interpret what you typed in ways that will surprise you. While you never said that people who went to school are not needed, the first impression people who don't know the ins and outs of the tech industry will have about a statement as broad as "Google, Facebook, Apple etc no longer require candidates to have college degrees" is almost the same as, "I can decide not to earn a college degree and still be hired to any job by these companies."
Nowhere in your posts about this topic did you state that you are only talking about software developers/development. And by reading the follow-up comments that initial post triggered, I think a lot of people were absolutely gobsmacked by that post because they couldn't fathom it. Your reply might have been to shokolo who wants to learn web development by enrolling in a school but you thought a whole lot of the people in this thread would automagically translate that context into your post; they did not.
I am not blaming you in any way for the misunderstanding, but please next time try to make things clear for people from the get-go so that these kinds of exchanges do not occur.
So guys, you can be a software developer without having a college degree or studying Computer Science in school. But there are still some jobs in tech that will be way off your reach without that college degree.
About the bolded, we both know that watching videos about compiler theory on Youtube is miles different from writing a compiler.
This was my post that sparked the debate
I see where you are coming from. I guess recruitment procedures in the IT field differs from non- IT. Since IT openings often relies on your knowledge (software engineering / Web development) which do not carry grades.
I stated it was about software/Web development.
Software / Web Development is a practical field. You can read all the books and attend all the classes you want, but if you don't practice especially on your own time, you wouldn't learn anything.
The whole MIT computer science program (With assignments) is available online so it's possible for anyone to get the same complier classes as those who went to MIT.
Also the LLVM project has people and programs who help those interested in complier development.
It would be naive to think that everyone who works in programming language development has a computer science degree.
Yes, Google, Apple and some other companies have decided to stop requiring candidates to have a college degree but that does not mean people who go to school to study Computer Science, Maths and related engineering and technology degrees for the IT/Tech industry have suddenly become unneeded. I agree that there are plenty of jobs in the tech industry that you do not need a college degree for; but there are some jobs that you must have at least a college degree to even be able to function at or comprehend.
Heck, I know someone who just got hired by a Canadian firm through VanHack as a JavaScript developer and would be migrating to Canada from Nigeria. Now, that is the traditional example of the kind of job that you do not need a college degree for. But you can't, in all honesty, tell me this kind of person who doesn't have a deep theoretical knowledge of computer science and mathematics would go ahead and write a compiler or even invent a programming language or lead the research that would power the next generation of self-driving cars and artificial intelligence etc.
You should also be reminded that many big tech companies have R& units and departments that they use as tools to drive innovation and technology forward. Do you, in all honesty, believe someone can function as a researcher in these companies, pushing the limits of technology and attempting things that have never been done without a college degree? Would someone without a college degree invent that navigation system that Space X rockets use to land automatically, refill, then take off again to attach itself back to the shuttle before taking that final lap into space? Would someone without a college degree lead the research that would invent the next-gen microchip that Apple will use to power its products?
So, while you can get a job without a college degree in the tech industry, there are jobs that you can't even comprehend just because you don't have that same college degree.
1) I never said people who went to school are not needed. 2) You do not need to go to school to learn compiler theory, you can learn that from YouTube.
My post talked about getting a job in Software Development /Web development and there are folks who are thinking of going back to school just to break into the software/web development industry.
My post was just to address that and like I said earlier, some folks learn better in formal settings and I encourage those people to go to school.
salford: This was an interesting topic. kudos to all contributors... Discussions like this are better than the occasional cats and dogs fights/relationships on this thread
PS: This is about purely tech firms (Amazon, Google, Microsoft et al) It would most likely not apply to working in tech departments of banks and other firms.
That being said, I have an extra copy of cracking the code interview and if anyone would like it, let me know. (preferably Ottawa based) because of shipping.
salford: I might not be the best to answer this, as I am not in IT, but I feel school highly matters. A school would make it easier to get a job than relying on just talents/knowledge.
The school markets you to employers either via coop programs or grad recruitment events; hence, you would have been given an edge over someone who has to rely on referral to break into the league.
Another point is that. When candidate A and candidate B both have similar knowlege/skill set (experienced folks), HR would have to eventually fall back on a factor to select a candidate. Academic qualification would likely be the deciding factor in going for one candidate over the other just like the example I gave at my work place.
Bsbabe: My sentiments exactly so I am trying to understand what AZeD1 was explaining about the tech industry and I got a bit lost because he said Google, Amazon & Co seem to have thrown out the book when it comes to recruiting based on academic qualifications and then later went on to say 'attending top schools matter' so basically I guess I am trying to clarify which one it is. Academics matter or they don't
In tech companies, Engineers make the decisions not HR so when it comes to hiring, Engineers send the candidates to HR.
When it comes to Candidates with same skill set and knowledge, the deciding factor is usually ** drum roll ** who the hiring manager(usually an engineer) would rather have a beer with.
That last bit might be surprising but personality is usually a big factor in tech hiring.
Bsbabe: I am not a techie but just following this conversation and getting a bit confused. Schools matter or they don't? It seems as if on one hand, you are saying it doesn't matter and in the next breath, it actually does. Or does 'attending top schools' matter when you're younger and pushing your educational achievements but ceases to be relevant when you are older and pushing your experience? And by 'younger' or 'older', I mean in terms of experience and not age.
They do and they don't. Explanation:
The big companies in Tech (Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, AirBnB, et al) have recruiting events in top ivy league schools so by virtue of attending those schools, you get to attend this events were you actually meet a recruiter in person as opposed to filling forms online that would be first screened by an automated system. So schools matter in the sense of being in the right place at the right time and once you have one of this big companies on your resume, it becomes easier to interview at the other big ones.
Once you are out of school, it becomes what you know and who you know(referral is a very potent factor in Tech companies) and luck in getting your resume in the hands of the right person.
Like I have shared earlier, I got my current job via reddit (I created a post with my resume after removing all personal information) and a couple of companies reached out to me.
salford: Interesting This is an eye opener. Seems some of these companies are using a radical approach to recruitment by sourcing for "talents" instead of using the traditional academic qualifications approach to bring people in for interviews. Let say he goes back to Amazon or drops out of Uni. Would not having a degree or having a mediocre one have an effect on his remuneration and promotion when compared to say a colleague recruited at the same time, but has say a computer science or software engineering degree from Caltech or other renowned institution?
As for the bold, the answer is NO. When it comes to promotion, your work along with company politics will speak for you. Company politics along the lines of working in high impact projects, your rapport with your manager and the likes. From my experience working in Tech, your degree is only good for your self confidence and bragging rights.
salford: Interesting This is an eye opener. Seems some of these companies are using a radical approach to recruitment by sourcing for "talents" instead of using the traditional academic qualifications approach to bring people in for interviews.
Yep. The whole MIT computer science curriculum (lectures, reading list, et al) is online so anybody in the world can actually have an MIT education without the certificate so why restrict your talent search to a limited pool?
Going to top schools helps because this companies actually have recruiting events in this tops schools so there's a higher chance of a human being going through your resume.
Don't ever, ever use the word "certified" your resume. It's far and away one of the most prominent red flags in resume screening, bordering on a dead-giveaway round-file 86-that-bad-boy no-review-required situation, if you know what I mean. (If you don't know what I mean, well, you know the old saying about not knowing who the sucker is at the poker table.)
Certification is for the weak. It's something that flags you as a technician when you really want to be an engineer. If you want to be a television repairman, you can become certified in TV repair. If you want to work for Sony and design their next big-screen TV, then you clearly don't need a busy-working-adults course on how to repair the fugging things.
Same goes for tech certification. It means you had to take a course to learn something you could have read in a book. If you know something, just say you know it, and then be prepared to answer questions about it during your phone screens and/or interviews. If you feel compelled to add that you're certified in said skill, it's just broadcasting that you lack confidence in your own self-assessments, which doesn't help you in the slightest.
Seriously. Take all mentions of certifications off your tech resume. It's actively hurting your chances of getting an interview.
salford: quote author=AZeD1 post=72026076] Your field is a bit confusing. If IT relies on knowledge, why do Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft e.t.c scout for high flying graduates from top universities in the US?
I have been contacted 3 times this year by Amazon recruiters for jobs in Seattle and I have no degree from any US universities. The reason why nobody cares about GPA anymore is because there are lots of people in those firms(Big 4) who are self taught developers with either high school diploma's or totally irrelevant degrees and they've realized that using GPA to recruit means they are missing out on a lot of talented developers.
This guy is in UBC Computer Science. He says his GPA is 2.3, he's been on academic probation for the past four years, failed two programming courses and that he wasn't accepted to Co-Op because of his grades. Yet, he's worked at NVIDIA, Amazon, and Facebook and he is going back to Amazon for full time.
The hardest part of getting a job in Tech (software development ) is getting an interview because a lot of companies like to recruit via referrals.
salford: I see where you are coming from. I guess recruitment procedures in the IT field differs from non- IT. Since IT openings often relies on certifications your knowledge (software engineering / Web development) which do not carry grades.
fiizznation: Dude this is 2019 and not 1970s. Nigeria political atmosphere is clouded with religious and tribal sentiments. We dont vote someone in Nigeria because he is competent. We vote someone based on ethnic chauvinism or religious sentiments. And that's the bitter truth which is very unfortunate.
Now how can Atiku sell himself to the average northerner. Dont forget, Atiku has never enjoyed the kind of popularity buhari is enjoying with the talakawas. Buhari picked an igbo man in 2003, northerners still voted for buhari because of the "buhari factor". Atiku is not loved even in his homestate of Adamawa, but for the fact that buhari's administration failed many people, even the die-hard supporters of buhari at one time admitted that he really failed them transforming some of them to neutrals( fence sitters ), but with this Atiku's decision of picking someone from se, i just don't know how he can even get votes from the north. I'm just stating the facts here so don't think am anti-igbo myself. I'm not.
Atiku doesn't need to convince the fence sitters, the fence sitters would boycott the election which reduces Buhari's margin from the North.
Bsbabe: I cannot claim to know anything about web development but at times, school may not be the best option to learn. It may just be that a certification really is what you need and a few $15 courses bought on Udemy and then going ahead to sit a certification exam may end up being the same as going to school full time to get the same certificate. Like I said, I do not know about web development but thought to share feasible alternatives. This is however only feasible to you if your school fees are still refundable.
For web development, you don't need a certificate, you just need to show you can do the job. As for tutorials, there's a ton of free ones on youtube.
Although I do believe some people study better in a formal environment.
Akorkor: Very long Journey. I recently flew Emirate to Los Angeles last week and its 16hrs long and it was hell. Whereas, Turkish airline was a just 12hrs distance to the same location.
Flying too long has a very bad side effect like swollen legs, high blood pressure et al. So I won't even recommend this to my enemy.
Boss13: Young fool - read your comment again. A typical ignorant Nigerian who does not know you, yet wants to bring your parents into the discussion. Certainly depicts how you were brought up. If I give you my LinkedIn profile and you finish reviewing it, do you think you would be able to respond to me again - I’m not bragging and I’m willingly to give you my LinkedIn profile so that you can have an idea and ascertain my educational and professional exposure and experience to yours.
May I remind you that you have neither provided any assistance nor responded to the question, yet you continue to express moronic tendencies that encapsulate your entire whole being.
Who gives a shit about your LinkedIn profile? Maternal provided an answer to the question without doing amebo.
I told theCongo I was done with you and this is my last response to you.
TheCongo2: This is the AZeD1 I know. But, I am wondering what has happened over his head today to immerse himself into an unnecessary fight. Please bro AZeD1, you have been a meaningful member of this thread. We need you back. Stop fighting. Same thing apply to you Boss13.
Boss13: Well I certainly think you are the foolish one here. Someone with child is asking for survival technique on minimum wage. That alone is a disaster and because you are a stupid and ignorant Nigerian and do not know how difficult it can be here, you have failed to understand my line of thought.
I pity the people who spent money to send you to school. Someone is asking for survival techniques on minimum wage and you are asking for something else.
If there's no other parent, would she not survive on minimum wage? The person asking the question knows why she asked but Mr Amebo wants to know more rather than give answers to the questions asked.
Boss13: I am not like you. I am not interested in her story or even yours. Do not mistake me with your silliness. I have asked a genuine question of which you have misconstrued because you are silly and exhibit the behavioral pattern of herbivores animals (Cows).
Some gave her the answers she needed with the information that was provided but Mr Amebo like you wants to ask silly questions.
Olodo stop asking questions that are none of your business.
Boss13: You see how you continue to expose your moronic self. There are several Nigerians who decide to travel with the children whilst their partner stay behind and support financially. A colleague of mine falls within this category until she finished her schooling before her husband joined her.
You want to be an action man abi - first check your time zone because I know how to address people like you - people without sense
You see how foolish you are? Someone is making plans for two people you are asking for a third person.
You should ask for a refund of your school fees because you obviously learnt nothing in school.
TheCongo2: Bro, personally I fail to see what was wrong with Boss13 's question. I could have asked the same thing as well. Anyway, we are one big family on here. No need for fighting.
The person who asked the question was concerned about two people so he/she could make plans for two people. There's no point asking for a third person because it doesn't answer the question that was asked initially.
Boss13: It was never your question - have you gone for mental evaluation? My response was never for you. Rather than engage yourself with your itinerary and winter jackets, you are more interested in sticking your nose where it does not belong.
If the commenter is not traveling with the other parent, there is absolutely nothing to hide. If he/she does not intend to answer, it is their choice. I am neither interested nor bothered. There are programs for legal single parenthood.
So before you begin to form James Bond on issues unrelated to you, may I advise you to drink the available kerosene in your house, since you can decipher between what your business should be or not. Don’t bring this rotten attitude to Canada. If an issue doesn’t concern you, keep to your moronic self
The irony coming from someone prying into someone's personal life.
A simple question was asked and your busy body will not allow you face front. Mr Amebo.
Boss13: No - minimum wage will not be enough. That’s why I asked after the other parent who may contribute financially before some cow decided to poke his nose. If you are coming via student route, be prepare for two (2) jobs which will be stressful, leave you little time to take care of your child and put enormous financial pressure on you.
If you had small sense you would have known that person who asked that question wanted to know the chances of survival with only person working part time.
You better go and find were you can borrow sense olodo.
