Career › Re: Degree Vs Certifications: Which Should You Go For? – A Detailed Guide. by AZeD1(m): 1:11pm On Mar 27, 2018 |
Williamso: I do not have the time to thoroughly critique your post, so I'll just cherry pick a few things.
In your first point, what Professional certification might one acquire for web development? I'm really curious about this.
Secondly:
I agree with this, but I'll even take it a step further: Employers focus on those with skills neither degrees nor certifications.
The problem here is that people really don't know the purpose of a University and why they are there or studying what they are studying (due in small parts to posts like this). And then people come out of the university as empty as they got in (I'm also a victim of this). As an example, you seem to be into web development so I'm sure you know about major frameworks, etc. The engineering of these frameworks requires a high level understanding of data structures and algorithms which every Computer Science program teaches. I haven't heard of any "professional certification" where you learn algorithms and its knowledge is priceless.
In summary, you can't say Certification is better than degree; it's not the degree's fault that most of the people who possess it don't even know why they did.
I have 2 degrees, 0 certifications and 0 regrets One bottle for you. For big software firms (Google, Microsoft et al) certifications are bad, so bad a Google engineer once wrote if you have certifications on your CV, they'll laugh at you. Knowledge matters and can you compare knowledge between someone who spent 4 years studying and someone who spent 3 months?

salford1: As an immigrant without Canadian education or work experience, there is really no manual available for securing an awesome job here. Apply to multiple jobs you qualify for (sometimes, it is a game of numbers and luck), attend all bridging program if possible, network aggressively and pray for the best. I would also say don't disqualify yourself from a job. If you see a job in your field , apply for it, it's the job of the hiring manager to pick those who are qualified not you. If you want to work in government, now is the time to in your applications, the new budget year starts in April so departments would start filling vacancies. Also note the government's recruitment can take time. PS: this is for non regulated fields please. |

Bruv.... . That is the good thing about Nigerians..you can see a very happy family living on 80k per month That's my "you are cool in Nigeria you don't have to leave amount". I was happy in Nigeria and I left not for economic reasons but I don't regret leaving. I sure do miss the "craziness" but I'll rather raise my kids outside Nigeria than in Nigeria. |

xynerise: It depends on your definition of a decent life That's true. As someone who has seen both sides of the grass, if you are not well connected in Nigeria and are not earning above 750k a month, my advice would be if you get the opportunity to leave legally, do it. Leave to a good country not Malaysia or Indonesia and the likes. |

nextstep: The simple truth is this: yes, Nigeria is tough - hellish some would say - but there are many people here living very good lives here, actually LIVING. When I see people come home from Western countries, it's like they are not alive. They may be comfortable, but they are in the same cycle of work, tax, debt, work, tax, debt with little chance to really LIVE. They may come and do shakara during Christmas, but at the end of the day, it's money they will spend the next 1 year paying off, with interest.
There are some who manage to break the cycle, perhaps investing back home or building a house, but from my understanding it's quite a soul-less and isolating existence.
Those who go abroad usually have gathered nearly 2million Naira for ticket, visa, living expenses. Just to go and drive taxi or be a nurse? That same 2million has launched many people out of poverty in this "sh1thole". Material wealth and comfort does not mean you're LIVING... I would like to be able to visit there frequently like some people I know, but not really reside.
I just wish we would see the incredible opportunities that foreigners are coming to find here... What's the cycle in Nigeria? Work, tax, supply your own water, electricity, bad roads, poor health e.t.c? There's no comparison between Nigeria and a developed country for someone who migrated legally. What do you mean by "living"? |

xynerise: Damn! I have a phobia for long articles
Well, just looking at the title, I can tell what the story is all about..
I keep telling my friends that abroad is where I will spend the money I make in Nigeria..You can make money in Nigeria because there are so many problems to solve over here. Problem solvers are RICH people I used to think like this before till I left Nigeria. The difference is clearer than 7up. For starters, no noise pollution. |

I cannot take them seriously until they start craving to come home. Because bad as e be in the abroad, it cannot be worse than how it is here People who migrated legally usually don't have a problem. It's those who don't have papers that struggle. When I first left Nigeria, I used to pay everything up front but now I know better. Why pay $800 up front when I can pay $50 a month and use the money for others things?. |

BlackManta: The exam is clashing.
The most rational thing to do is change the time table.
Muslims are not saying that christians should not take exam...NO.
Dont misinterpret the message.
They are only saying that the time for exam clashes with their Jummat prayer, therefore it should be changed....SIMPLE.
There is no way exam time will be different in North and South. To avoid malpractice, exam should be taken at the same time nationwide.
The exam time is affecting muslims and rational conclusion is to change the time.
Both christians and Muslims take their exam and muslims dont miss their Jummat.
It's a win win situation.
Everybody goes home happy.
SIMPLE.
I dont see how changing exam time to accomodate muslims will affect christians.
They just need to change the time.
At the end of the day.
Everybody will still take the exam.
Problem sloved.
WIN WIN
I dont know why people are arguing over this. You are assuming everyone is either a Christian or a Muslim. I am saying when it comes to National issues, religion should not be a deciding factor. |

maasoap: So, that's the best way to justify their action? That's why we say many of you are hypocrites. Call me whatever you want, the fact is Muslims can't and shouldn't infringe on the rights of others. You guys have a right to attend jumat on Fridays, others have a right to do exams on Friday. If there's a clash, everyone gets to pick the most important one. |

BlackManta: The reason why Sunday is a work free day is because Nigeria was colonized by Britian who were mostly christians. We adopted many things from them including their work free day.
There are core muslim countries that use friday as work-free day.
If a core-muslim country had colonised Nigeria, friday would have been our work-free day.
But we were colonised by the christian british and we adopted their way of life.
Dont let that get into your head.
Muslims are not asking for a work-free Friday, they are only asking for 2-3 hours to respect their religious belief.
Your christians enjoy the privilege of a work-free Sunday but you dont want Muslims to respect their 2-3 hours of Jummat.
Think about it...
I'm not a muslim. I'm a rational atheist who thinks peaceful co-existence should be promoted in the society.
Muslims should be allowed to enjoy their 2-3 hours of Jummat. Nobody has said Muslims shouldn't enjoy their 2 hours of jumat. What I'm saying is don't use your religion to affect others. Religion is a private affair and should not come into play in national discussions. Muslims have the right to attend jumat on Friday, but they don't have the right to stop others from doing exams when they want to. |

maasoap: You can say that when WAEC fixes Sunday mornings for exams, then I will believe you're not an hypocrite. It's doesn't matter if I say WAEC should fix Saturday mornings for exams or not, the question you should ask is if WAEC (staff) work on Sunday or not. We cannot put religion ahead of National issues. |
Education › Re: WAEC Is Confused – MURIC, Reveals What Timetable Can Cause In Nigeria by AZeD1(m): 5:04pm On Mar 19, 2018 |
LibertyRep: Government-owned secondary schools in Nigeria close schools by 1 pm or thereabout on Fridays to allow Muslims observe Jummat service. Same thing for offices and parastatals.
It shouldn't be too much for WAEC to just leave the hours of 1-3pm on Fridays for Muslims to observe Jummat.
In a sane society devoid of mutual suspicion, non-muslims should even be at the forefront of the agitation for the exclusion of examination during the Jummat period. There's no sane society with religious nut jobs. WAEC is not a religious body and should not take region into consideration when setting time table. Anybody who wants to go for jumat should go, those who want to go exams should do so. It's not compulsory to write WAEC. Any student who chooses jumat can register at the next available opportunity. |
