Politics › Re: Wole Soyinka Opposes UNILAG/MAU Renaming by Baawaa(m): 9:10am On May 31, 2012
odumorun 1: I strongly disagree with Wole Soyinka on this.

The furore regarding the renaming of Unilag is elitist posturing of the worst kind, dressed up in the garb of democratic protestation. This has nothing to do with anger that the council of the university was not consulted. The university and its senate and governing council do not fund the school. The school is funded by the federal government from the federal purse representing millions of hardworking Nigerians most of whose kids will never enjoy the benfit of a university education let alone a prestigious one like Unilag.

The storm in a tea cup is another example of middle class Nigerians, particularly yoruba ones (the most snobbish and self regarding version and yes i am a Yoruba) refusing to be associated with a person largely revered by the poorer classes. The same happened when Uiversity of Ife was renamed in 1987 in honour of Obafemi Awolowo, when a few hundred students largely of middle class origin demonstrated their objection, while the poor people in the town, carpentars, shoe makers, tailors and others who benefited from awo's reforms celebrated.

This is all about a few priviledged and educated yoruba people wanting to retain what they see as an eleitis label placing them apart from the majority of the population whom they secretly despise. If the school had been named after Barack Obama would they be protesting, even if it was done without consultation - Of course they wouldn't - they'll probably be fantasising about getting an easy visa ride in the American embassy.

Wole Soyinka is a radical and progressive Nigerian but his elitism is a well known flaw which is why he has never inspite of his undoubted courage been able to buod a mass following for his ideas.

Unilag is funded by the majority of the people of this country, not the students or their lecturers. Most ordiany Nigerians respect the sacrifices people like abiola made - they, not the spolit middle class kids kicking up a fuss in Unilag are the majority. The noisy minority in Unilag should be ignored. they will son go back to their Ipads

If they don't like the name when they receive their degrees let them rip them up. They don't own the school, the people do -i've not seen any demonstrations in mushin, shomolu, bere or sabongari against it.

If wole is not happy let him write a poem about his fury. He is a great man, but on this occasion he is wrong
Listen to yourself once"UNILAG is funded by majority of the people of this country, not the student or their lecturers"You mean the student of UNILAG are not Nigerians and their lecturers are Chinco.I cannot comprehend who is monotonous between you and GEJ grin grin grin

Politics › Re: Democracy Day Church Service: GEJ Refuse To Say "Amen" To Anti-corruption Prayer by Baawaa(m): 4:17pm On May 28, 2012
chippyripp: Reuben Abati explains why The President didn't say Amen to Anti Corruption Prayer

Abuja– Spokesperson for President Jonathan Ebele Goodluck, Mr Reuben Abati, has responded to accusations that Jonathan and members of his cabal refused to say amen to at this weekend’s democracy day Church Service when the preacher offered a prayerful curse against corruption amongst public officials.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Abati revealed aspects of protocol that are not widely known outside Government circles, and which would explain why Mr President and ministers didn’t say Amen to the prayer by Most Reverend Peter Akinola, committing corrupt politicians to the court of God.

According to him, it is a long standing presidential protocol that during Church or Mosque services, the President only offers a fixed number of amens or amis, as the case may be.

The Reverend had offered many prayers and demanded many amens prior to the contentious one, Abati explained, the result of which was that the day’s quota of amens had been used up.

“Why?” asked the spokesperson, “would President not say amen to a prayer against corruption?”

He advised preachers, pastors, imams etc, to familiarise themselves with government protocol and to also limit the length of their prayers and sermons.

“It is the same people accusing the President of not saying amen to anti-corruption prayer that would be accusing him of favouritism if he had broken with protocol and said more amens than is allowed by constitution,” Abati said.

Naija much Respsect!!! Loooooooool
Bros, why u want sentence Abati grin grin grin

Abagworo: It might or might not be tribalistic but the office of the President should be revered. I don't think you will find it funny when ordinary Church overseers like Oyedepo, Oyakhilome, Adeboye and co are insulted not to talk of our President. I'm a GEJ and PDP critic but I will never insult the President.

Scissorshand: I think Obasanjo was the chairman of PDP's BOT.What did he do to ensure a systemic fix to the electoral process of his party,to ensure that the right people get to elective offices. As a president, was there nothing he could have done to give us a transparent and better electoral system? It's easy to point fingers, but what did he do when he was the most powerful man in the land?Probably,if he writes an open letter to GEJ,suggesting what he could have done to better the electoral process, policies that will improve our lot, etc,(abi, really, whats there to hide?),then we will know he truly means well.Rather than casting aspersions,he should remember,he was the president that oversaw(directly or indirectly) the process that gave us this present group of leaders. He should take responsibility, and propose solutions.
Dont mind him, that is what they called "had i known",when he was president he was carried away with self-interest and greediness.Obasanjo would have been the one to fix this country,if not for greediness and personal interest."God really favored him but he did not favor himself"

Politics › Re: Alamieyesigha Urges Fed Govt To Legalise Bunkering by Baawaa(m): 2:04pm On May 22, 2012
supoade: Former Bayelsa State Governor Diepreye Alamieyesigha has advocated for the legalisation of bunkering in the Niger Delta.
Alamieyeseigha said foreigners are the masterminds of bunkering in the region.
He urged stakeholders to prevail on President Goodluck Jonathan to issue licences for the legalisation of bunkering.
The former governor spoke at a ceremony in honour of the late Ijaw hero, Isaac Boro, in Yenagoa.
He said: “There is one thing happening in our area now. I read in the papers about oil theft. About 17 per cent of our production is taken away.
“Our people are not sophisticated enough to go into high-level bunkering. The bunkerers are not here. In the whole oil industry, how many Ijaw people are lifting oil?
“To address the poverty that is so endemic among our people, there should be licences for bunkering.
“The Ijaw man is not yet emancipated economically. The fight is not over, we must be economically liberated.
“There is a thin line between economy and power. They complement each other. My brothers and sisters, let us unite. We should obtain licences for bunkering.
“We have a president of our own, we have a minister of petroleum, who will stop us from obtaining bunkering licences?
“Ask, it shall be given, knock it shall be open. No need to go behind the door. Let us confront our brother and get what we want for our people.”
Alamieyeseigha extolled the legacies of the late Boro, whom he described as the architect of the survival of the Ijaw nation.
“People must look at those areas that we have been impoverished and fight for it. We know that nobody will give you power on a platter of gold; you demand for it, you fight for it. It is our own,” he noted.

NIGERIA'S PROBLEM IS DEEPLY ROOTED IN THE MILITARY AND HAUSA INDUCED CONSTITUTION WE USE. IF NIGERIA OPERATED ON TRUE FEDERALISM FROM INCEPTION, GEJ ADMINISTRATION WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BEST. WITH THE WAY OUR CONSTITUTION IS MANGLED, EVEN JESUS CHRIST OR MOHAMMMED, CAN NOT MAKE THIS COUNTRY WORK, INFACT MAKE JESUS CHRIST PRESIDENT AND MOHAMMED FINANCE MINISTER, IT WONT WORK, THE CENTRAL SOLUTION IS REVENUE SHARING FORMULAR, FEDERAL TAXABLE RESOURCE CONTROL IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED FOR EACH UNIT TO STAY ECONOMICALLY INDEPENDENT AND THE CENTER WILL BE LESS ENTICING. THE ROOT CAUSE OF BOKO HARAM AND MEND IS REVENUE SHARING, MY WORD AGAINST YOURS.
