Of cos it's not explicitly written as a criterion but the IOC would not ordinarily give the hosting right to a city in the same country with another city that has hosted it in a very short time. They try as much as possible to move it around. Atlanta 96(North America), Sydney 2000(Oceania), Greece 2004(Europe), Beijing 2008(Asia), London 2012(Europe), Rio 2016(South America), Tokyo 2020(Asia). So, you can see that they keep moving it around. The only reason it hasn't gotten to Africa is that it will be very difficult for an African city to host the event.

I think Athens got it as an honour to them for starting the games off and they get to host every first games of every new century, the Rio bid was supported by the whole continent of South America if correct

In Nigeria, cities don't generate soo much money as a lot of stuff is controlled for a center, so i don't see how a Nigerian city will be able to host the olympics without heavy support from the FG. It's just not possible. At least not yet. Even the Abuja commonwealth bid was put forth and supported by the federal government. So, whether the Olympics is hosted in Yenagoa, Abakaliki or Ado-Ekiti, the Nigerian government will bear the grunt.

Yeah but no matter how much the FG throw at it, Abuja will never beat a city like Florida, Liverpool, Lisbon, Doha, Rome or Sao Paolo for the right to host the Olympics and these are cities which are strong enough to take the fight to the IOC, its only Lagos and Lagos is strong but not strong enough

A city hosts the olympics but does ot always carry the financial weight alone. Afterall the city's success is the country's success. Abuja hosted the All African Games some years back but the funds came from the federal government. You don't expect a city in Nigeria to fun such a sporting event. Do you? And What do you mean by "Abuja cannot beat Cairo, Casablanca or Nairobi let alone Johannesburg!". Are those cities competing with Abuja? Who says they're interested in hosting the olympics. The games is not necessarily given to the better city but the city that shows more commitment.

The City matters because London beat the Favourite Paris, New York, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Moscow whereas Manchester lost to Atlanta and Sydney, The all African games is a different ball game yes Nigeria is a sport loving nation but thats not enough, Nigeria is a football crazy nation but the IOC love to know how will Nigeria maintain the Olympic legacy in the country? Am sorry Abuja lost to Glasgow and that speaks volume.

The City of London, majority of the fund for the 2012 Olympic came from London's council tax payers

Symphony007: ever heard of liverpool. Manchester. Edinburgh. Cardiff, glascow, blackpool,etc...by the way, manchester is hosting the 2014 commonwealth games.

The City of Manchester lost the 1996 and 2000 bid to both Atlanta Georgia and Sydney but the hosted the 2002 Commonwealth games

The truth is that Nigeria has the financial muscle to host an olympic game but we don't have the character. I won't want a situation whereby stadiums will be virtually empty because people cannot pay for sits. I think the Olympic games prosper in countries will a large pull of upper and middle class people.

A country doesnt host the Olympic but a city does, so tell me which City will that be Kano, Abuja, Enugu, Ibadan etc The only that has a slight chance will be Lagos. Will the FG support a Lagos bid? I doubt it, Abuja cannot beat Cairo, Casablanca or Nairobi let alone Johannesburg!

No matter how you look at Commando, Rambo or Die Hard, they have a very good storyline. Film editors knows when how to prevent a story dragging and becoming boring thats why they cut some scenes out before it goes to the cinema. With Nollywood I loose interest the moment it starts asking me to insert disc 2. I will rather watch a plane trying to spend 12 minutes to take off, than watching a guy in an car, with a headphone and microphone over his head trying to mug us as if he is about to take off in an helicopter (China made Toy helicopter)

veraponpo: The post below was culled from the publication made after he delivered a lecture on April 29th in the US. I now wondered why he is respected more by the international communities more than our President.... Why?

Read his words below:

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, at the weekend said his government picked up critical lessons from the Boston marathon attack in the United States, a couple of weeks ago, which left many people dead and scores badly injured, some with permanent damage.
Speaking at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, John Hopkins University, Washington D.C, where he delivered a lecture, Fashola said he kept long nights taking notes on how the US government managed the situation from the moment the attack was launched.
Describing terrorism as a trans-boundary crime, Fashola told the audience that: “I kept long hours at night following the events, taking notes about how the first responders reacted and how the law enforcement carried out their duties. They are notes that I have shared with my colleagues in government that are in charge of health and security services and many of them shared some of those long nights as well.”
The governor described the occasion of the lecture as “an appropriate opportunity to personally convey the sympathy of the people and government of the state to all of you Americans here and members of the free world for the unfortunate and horrific incident that happened in Boston over a week ago. We join you in condemning and fighting terror wherever it rears its ugly head.
“For those who still fail to understand, terror is a trans-boundary crime with global ramifications. Even though we were not physically here with you during those traumatic moments, we were deeply affected by the events as we watched on global news.”
The incident aside, Fashola also shared his experience on the trip to the US when he said: “Violence and devastating consequences compelled me to review my invitation to speak here today. I asked myself if it was safe to come. I asked myself if the law enforcement and border security agencies would be increasingly hostile to visitors in view of the origins of the suspects of the crime.
“I asked myself if people like me, a Muslim, would not be profiled for all sorts of body searches. I considered calling Professor Peter Lewis to cancel the trip. The event is a call I never made. I decided to personally experience whatever new measures that visitors to this country would now have to contend with.
“I am pleased that I never picked up the phone to call Professor Lewis. I am also pleased to say that none of my fears about the possible heavy-handed reaction were borne out– at least, certainly not from my experience or that of my entourage. But something that was non-official, in this sense, did not represent the manifest position of the government of this country, happened,” he noted.
Continuing, Fashola said “As we were being assisted through Immigration by my country’s ambassador, the very amiable Ambassador Archibong, an elderly American lady shouted out: ‘Why should these visitors go through before me? This is my country.’ Her words will stay with me for a long time as I struggle to make meaning of them. But why are they relevant here?
“It is because Professor Lewis asked me to speak on a topic that relates to the challenges of governance and development in Lagos State, and governing Nigeria’s federal system. I had chosen the topic ‘Liberating and coordinating diversity.’ But I did not write my speech until Wednesday, the day I got here.
“As far as I know, many countries that have opted for a federal system of government have done so because it is the best known system for managing diversity; whether of tribes, nationalities, religions, ethnicities or languages. In this sense, this country and my country, especially my state, Lagos, are no different.
“Lagos shares many similarities with New York: as former federal capitals, as current commercial capitals, as melting pots of different people from different walks of life. Where would our two countries be without the diversity of their immigrant population- an immigrant population whose skills and financial resource help to keep the wheels of development turning?” he asked, adding: “I will let you ponder over these thoughts, and move to the content of my speech.”

Its interesting to know that people are still and willing to broaden their horizon!!! When next Fashola is going on a trip he should invite GEJ along probably stop at London Zoo!!!

amnestylaw1: Russian Railway has been one of the world's largest and best. One needs to watch BBC to see the success that the Russians have made. Fahola is making a right move and he needs ti be commended. I wouldn't be surprised if this thread generates another e- war on Yoruba vs Igbo, Fashola vs PDP or even about his not so good developmental projects.

My brother, i have a B.Eng in electrical/electronics engineering. with focus on electronics by my training, i should be designing electronics devices. All i learnt was equations! many of us here cannot repair ordinary transistor radios let alone designing and producing. when my tv have a problem, i take it to the "illitrate technician". the little repairs i did, i learnt from the road side repairers.

What then was my purpose of the education?
my brother, i have also have a masters degree, in computing, but our computer scientists end up as computer operators.

As for my age, i left the university in 1996. my words are words from an experienced and a matured man.

Look University is not going to teach you everything and we are talking about university world wide! If you want to build your own radio, the desire has come from within! you look for the book of those who have in the past and study, I cant remember £billionaire Richard Branson the Virgin Atlantic owner had little education, but he learnt everything he knew by himself.

Which part of that did you miss......

You could abandon your house and look for a cave to live, leaves to cover your body, fire-wood, raw meat etc

No wonder the British, French, Spanish, Roman and German Empire emptied Africa of there resources before we were enlightened!

"The best way to hide something from Black people is to put it in a book" I wonder why someone would come out with this statement

Foreign Affairs / Was Princess Diana MURDERED By SAS? Metropolitan Police New Claim by babyboy3(m): 11:24pm On Aug 17, 2013
Police were last night looking into bizarre new claims that the SAS murdered Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed – amid speculation that the inquiry into their deaths could be reopened.
Scotland Yard said officers from its Specialist Crime and Operations Command were ‘scoping’ the details and ‘assessing its relevance and credibility’, but stressed they had not reopened their investigation.
It is believed the key information originated with an ex-soldier who told his former wife and her parents some time ago he could throw new light on the deaths in 1997, and suggested the SAS were involved.

Now the soldier’s former parents-in-law have come forward to pass the details on to the Metropolitan Police. MoD sources denied reports the Royal Military Police had played a role in passing on the information.
The development comes almost 16 years after Diana and Dodi were killed in a fatal Paris car crash when their Mercedes limousine hit a pillar in the Pont d’Alma underpass at around 80mph.

An inquest in 2008 found they were unlawfully killed due to the ‘gross negligence’ of their driver, Ritz Hotel security manager, Henri Paul, who had been drinking.
Many conspiracy theories have surrounded Diana’s death, and Dodi’s father, former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed, has always insisted he believes the couple were murdered.

He was informed of the new development last night by his PR adviser Michael Cole on the Fayed estate at Oxted, Surrey.
Mr Cole said: ‘Mohamed has always believed his son and Diana were murdered and he has consistently stuck to that line.
'He has always believed that something will break and he is watching developments with interest.’
Met sources played down the significance of the claims, describing it as ‘just a nugget we have to check out’.

Am still looking for a video to watch it again, but she ran a V Poor race!

The mechanics of the 200m is quite straight forward... Shelly Ann had Blessing in her sight and she used her as a target to catch! So if Shelly Ann had used Blessing as a yard stick, shouldnt Blessing be doing the same, using Ahoure as target to chase down because the moment Shelly Ann passed Blessing she was under pressure and tightened up and found it difficult to pass the little Ivorian, despite having longer strides.
