Private sector backs FG on removal of subsidies on petroleum products October 15, 2011 03:14PM The organised private sector on Friday endorsed Federal Government proposal to remove subsidies from petroleum products and deregulate the down-stream sector of the industry. The decision was reached at the end of a two-day Presidential Retreat with the private sector on economic development and job creation at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. A statement issued at the end of the retreat said the participants agreed that the current regime of subsidies on petroleum products ``is inefficient, corrupt and a waste of scarce financial resources''. The statement was read by Mr Nduka Obaigbena, the President of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria and Chairman of ThisDay Newspaper. It quoted the private sector as saying that the financial burden of subsidy was unsustainable in a nation where critical infrastructure, human and capital development, were in dire need of investment. ``Taking cognizance of the foregoing, we call on the Federal Government to ensure that the benefits of deregulation accrued to the generality of Nigerians in a manner that it benefits the poor and the under-privileged,'' the statement said. It urged the Federal Government to continue with its wide consultations with the labour, the civil society organisations and other stakeholders on the benefits of a deregulated price regime. Mr Wale Tinubu, the Chairman of Oando Plc and a signatory to the statement, said the more than N8 billion being used by the government to subsidise petroleum products could be used to provide infrastructure. He noted that diesel had already been deregulated, and said that the only challenge was to ensure that the government channelled the money judiciously to the provision of infrastructure and people-oriented programmes. Speaking in the same vein, the Chairman of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, said that subsidy only benefitted a cartel to the detriment of Nigerians. He called on the labour and the civil society organisations to see reason with the government and support the removal of subsidies. In his closing remarks, President Goodluck Jonathan thanked the participants and promised to implement the decisions reached at the retreat. The retreat was organised by Goodluck Jonathan to forge partnership between the government and the private sector in the realisation of his transformation agenda. The statement was signed by the 42 captains of industry, who attended the retreat. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/National/5745369-147/private_sector_backs_fg_on_removal.csp |
^ Computers and staff can be in place within a mere couple of weeks and the port is not due to be launched until next month. |
seanet02:Bruv, where is the list na? LOLZ! Aregbesola is just telling his usual high stories. Na who be di maga? |
GAR3TH:You are right indeed. But it really does look like Warri Port (pic below). https://www.intelservices.com/layout/images/warri_port_003.jpg |
asha 80:Hmm! I never knew about the Agenebode port, but come to think of it, there are several ferry crossings to Kogi from Northern Edo. Nice. As for your bolded comment, here's an addition, the railway line from Port Harcourt runs parallel to River Niger for much of the journey upward (map below). Its easy to see that rail line becoming yet another major artery between North and South. I see massive growth coming to Asaba, Warri and of course, Onitsha. The area is opening up for business in major ways, all those industries in Nnewi (and surrounding areas) will in the near future be spoilt for choice for cheap transportation outlets. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/51/Rail_Map_NG.JPG |
macjive01:I can swear that this is Warri Port. |
SAKUR:Na who be di maga? In the meantime, here is the railway map of Nigeria. Where is "Dagbolu?" Is it on non-existent track? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/51/Rail_Map_NG.JPG E ro ra o! ![]() www.nairaland.com/attachments/180447_ROTFLMAO_gif3d0c775232c7f27cf80592785b9635b6 |
This new route is a major achievement indeed and a revolution in the country's transportation system. Without doubt, it will become the major artery for the transportation of foodstuff and industrial materials between North and South. Because water transport is so cheap and relatively maintenance free, it would lift the burden of heavy haulage of goods from our roads. It would be nice if both Edo and Ondo could be connected to it to relieve the roads (especially Lagos-Benin) off heavy timber traffic. |
This is a feat that will be easily replicated across the SS/SE and the Middle Belt if the country breaks up. Delta state has already had free maternal health care since 2007. Nice one from Amaechi. |
Lewis gets pole!!!! Go boy! He was the only guy in the 35's and stopped Red Bull from creating an F1 record with 16 poles in a season (could still be done, though). 1 Lewis Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes 1’35.820 2 Sebastian Vettel Red Bull-Renault 1’36.042 3 Jenson Button McLaren-Mercedes 1’36.126 4 Mark Webber Red Bull-Renault 1’36.468 5 Felipe Massa Ferrari 1’36.831 6 Fernando Alonso Ferrari 1’36.980 7 Nico Rosberg Mercedes 1’37.754 8 Vitaly Petrov Renault 1’38.124 9 Paul di Resta Force India-Mercedes 10 Adrian Sutil Force India-Mercedes |
Pukkah:The palliatives are still being worked on (GEJ made an important speech about that yesterday); we need to wait for the details lest we begin to walk in circles. You are right though in demanding for details that we can scrutinise in micro-detail. Truth is, just a fraction of that money will be enough to take care of a good welfare package for the poor; the rest can go into capital expenditure (though the lazy minded governors seem to be angling hard for more Abuja money). |
Its funny how the usual know alls are claiming that the ADC is in an airforce uniform. There is a visible crest on his cap and it doesn't belong to the airforce (same as his epulet). |
Fashola has my firm backing. ![]() Enough of that frog-like, drug pushing thief called Tinubu. |
