President clocks 100 days in office
From JULIANA TAIWO, Abuja
Sunday, August 15, 2010

President Goodluck Jonathan. on Friday, marked 100 days in office, but it went unnoticed without fanfare unlike state governors are wont to do.
The President was sworn in on May 6 this year, a day after President Umaru Yar’Adua was pronounced dead.

Some of the notable things Jonathan has done in the last 100 days include measures to guarantee free and fair elections in 2011 such as the appointment of a credible chairman and national electoral commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission as well as ensuring that funds are made available for a new voters register; action to fulfill the promise of regular power supply to Nigerians through the Presidential Task Force on Power headed by a sector specialist, Prof. Barth Nnaji; and restoring normalcy to the downstream sector of Nigeria’s oil sector and ending of the queues at fuel stations across the country.

Other achievements are consolidating Nigeria’s banking sector reforms and strengthening its financial sector through the establishment of the Assets Management Company of Nigeria; forging a consensus among the three tiers of government for the creation of a Sovereign Wealth Fund that will facilitate sustainable economic growth and development; and raising $5.2 billion from the International Development Association to finance the provision of critical infrastructure.

To keep the economy on an even keel, President Jonathan also realigned the 2010 national budget with current financial realities by working with the National Assembly to adjust expenditure levels; disbursing N130 billion to commercial banks for the refinancing of loans granted to small and medium scale enterprises; sustaining the disbursement of the N200 Billion Agricultural Development Fund; and maintaining peace in the Niger Delta through implementation of the re-orientation and rehabilitation programme for former militants, among other actions.

On the global stage, the administration has repositioned Nigeria to reassume its leadership role in African affairs and its rightful place as a major player in the comity of nations. Jonathan currently chairs the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Group of Eight Developing Nations.
The country also held the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council for July 2010.

wise son:
@komando: Perhaps you are referring to my stating that he is winning the political battle for his candidacy - by this I mean that at the party level, the obstacles, which would have prevented him from running on the platform of PDP are seemingly being cleared. However among the wider generality of Nigerians, he is losing appeal. Getting the nomination of PDP, does not mean that people see him as fit to be president. More and more Nigerians are getting the feeling that he is not capable of leading Nigeria purposefully - that his what I mean by his approval rating is dropping.
Talking all this emotional stuff doesn't cut it. Jonathan has been President for three months and an incredible amount has occured in those three months; mose people are balanced enough not to make extreme judgements in three short months, but hey! If all one can deduce from your writeup is a stream of emotional strings, then you might really be appealing to tribalists and sectionalists, rather than the balanced majority who know that a mere three months is quite a bit too short for some of the words you have chosen.

Lets calm down and take a deep breath and approach matters in a rational way.

Reps Block Jonathan's Anti-Money Laundering Bill

In a curious move and a speculated attempt to encourage graft among its members, The House of Representatives today indefinitely suspended consideration on the anti-money laundering bill. The bill Was sponsored by President Goodluck Jonathan

The part of the bill that gives both the senate and the House serious worry is the section that requires individuals doing deals above N5 million with banks, to report such to the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). It requires corporate entities to report transactions above N10 million.

The House made attempts to discuss the bill, which is fashioned after the international framework against corruption, but dumped it when members sought to limit some of its provisions.

The bill, which had gone through two readings and committee considerations, awaits a final plenary approval and third and final passage.

The Deputy Speaker, Usman Nafada, said the consideration will now be carried out on a “suitable date”, two days after the Senate also voted to debate the legislation on a further date.

The lawmakers’ decision came after receiving a fresh communication from Mr Jonathan, advising them against tampering with certain provisions of the proposal, and for a speedy delivery of the two bills which had already failed to meet an earlier June 30, 2010, deadline.

He said the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) requires all member-states to model their domestic legislation in consonance with global best practices. Mr Jonathan said another meeting of the international body in September 2010, would welcome the delivery of the bill.

What is your evidence that Buhari is a criminal?

I am afraid I one of those that believe he is holy.
It was difficult for me to come to that conclusion as well, but aside from his government being involved in the transportation of 53 suitcases of Naira (at the time, it was 85 cents to 1 Naira), Buhari was also involved in very stratospheric scandals as Minister For Petroleum and Natural Resources, Chairman of the NNPC and Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF). At the Petroleum Trust Fund, he was directly involved in the scandal of N2.8 billion missing in oil money.

As much as id like to believe you, i think what they found baffling was that blacks had attained that level of metallurgic sophistication. Not because Benin or Ife had better technology. Thats just not true, Europeans were way ahead of us in a general sense. your argument is a fallacy actually since you're implying that skill in bronze casting etc translates to the same level of general technological advancement which is not true. Your inductive line of reasoning is flawed. Fact is they had guns and were able to colonize us. They were by far more advanced.
Its not hard to find out if you mean to. So I'll not join the argument. Just go find out from your own history first, then check if any Europeans were casting copper at the time. It is left to you to deny without even checking, but hey! I'm cool.

Last week, the Senate dissolved its Communications Committee. This followed revelations that the Committee chairman Senator Sylvester Anyanwu, had forged the signatures of committee members and security report used to clear the new candidate for EVC of NCC, Eugene Juwah. Curiously the candidate was still cleared despite the forgery! Those who hurriedly cleared Eugene Juwah to become EVC knew that he was one of those who took MTS Wireless to the mortuary; a record they don’t want interrogated! In truth, NCC is a house of absurdities! ONLY IBO people have EVER been chief executives of NCC since inception in 1992: Ogbonnaya Iromantu, Emmanuel Nnnana, Mrs. Tina Nwachukwu, Ernest Ndukwe and now Juwah! The dirty manoeuvrings which led to Eugene Juwah’s emergence reached the highest levels of the presidency. One of the reasons for the desperacy is the 2011 elections. NCC is expected to funnel funds into the PDP’s campaign and Jonathan’s; it is therefore important to ensure that the “proper” candidate heads NCC. There is also the “small matter” of keeping NCC under control of the “anointed” ethnic group. That was why Bashir Gwandu was not given a look-in despite his eminent qualification for the job: he is not from the “owner ethnic group” of the NCC!

So the over flogged argument that Europeans stole and pillaged the African continent is baseless in this esteemed economist's view. DO you think Africans gained or lost from contact with Europeanshuh
At the time the Portuguese came to West Africa, there was no difference in technological advancement. The Europeans of the time were especially baffled by West African technologies; a great example is our brand of cire perdue (lost-wax casting); a casting technique that overshadowed anything similar in Europe of that period; they were baffled by the fact that both the Edo and Ife peoples could cast copper to incredible detail and thinness of cross section. It was an impossibility in Europe of the time; copper is a metal a very reactive metal is almost impossible to cast, talkless of the fine achievements of Benin and Ife. Today, we have no such technological edge in any field.

Did we lose from contact with Europeans? . . .The answer is quite glaring.
Slavery and negative contact with Europeans are the main factors in our past that have contributed todays low self esteem, poverty and under-development.

What about their government giving clearance to ship out 54 suitcases of raw dosh to be flown out of the country?

Hi,

I'll try my best.

It was way back in the day. Buhari was the Head of State, his sidekick was the military hardliner Tunde Idiagabon. The govt decided to change the currency, I can't really remember the reason why, maybe to revamp the economy. Ialso think they wanted to force the politicains they had deposed to come back with their stolen loot (I may be wrong about this, all of this happened circa 1984). Anyways, I definitely know that the Naira was trading at N1.50 to the £1, and 85cents to the dollar. (Yes, this was the exchge rate in those days!!!! If you can lay your hands on a copy of Punch, Daily Times or Punch newspapers from 1985, you can check these factsout for yourself).

As part of the currency conversion excercise nobody was allowed to take any money outside Nigeria's borders. Lo and behold it was reported that the Emir of Gwandu successfully smuggled out 53 suitcases of naira notes, presumably to change into foreign currency abroad before it becomes worthless.

The press and social critics raised a lot of dust about this, but nothing concrete was done about it. Nevetheless, the credibility of the Buhari regime suffered terribly as a result of this.

I think he took the suiotcases to the airport, but the customs officer on duty, a certain Alhaji Abubakar Atiku wanted it confiscated and reported to the military govt. However, the Emir came to the airport with some army officers, I think two Colonels who insisted that the Emir must fly out with his Naira laden luggage. In case you were wondering, yes, the customs boss in question is no other than Alhaji Atiku, the current VP.

Thank you my brother. What we actually need is working together, We really need to evaluate on how we can change nigeria in our own individual way, I for one do not believe that any of these opportunists parading themselves as politicians, leaders, elder statesmen etc can change Nigeria positive, What i believe is that with our own individual efforts, together we can collectively bring out the greatness of our own beloved country-Nigeria!! God Bless Nigeria, Amen
The problem with the bolded is that it is chasing wind; its like a puppy chasing its own tail, going round in circles, but never quite catching the tail. Nigeria's problem is structural, until we address that head on, we will keep running in place. We practice a unitary government, but choose to decieve ourselves that we are practicing federalism. Unitary govts are ownly suited to small countries (which 9ja is very far from being).

Every month, governors troop to Abuja to beg for their states monthly upkeep, making them accountable to Abuja, rather than their people. To make matters worse, they get into power by the rigging arrangement from Abuja, so their people might live or die, its never going to affect a governors prospects in any way. For them, life always goes on and they will never give a damn. The legislature on the other hand, is by far the highest paid in the World, Dimeji Bankole gets a billion Naira in allowances, salary and other pecks; they are the highest paid as a form of bribery, all they need do is keep bad laws flowing and never block the corruption conduit to the pockets of the big cheeses.

Our politics naturally only interests the more criminally minded in society, it is like flies and rotten meat. . . Corruption is merely a side effect of Nigeria's flawed structure, indeed the structure was built by our ex-general political hegemons for the sole purpose of continuing to reap corrupt lucre long after leaving office. IBB is fighting a desperate do or die battle, because he see's the danger of that pipe being closed in the near future.

The only thing that can save Nigeria is true federalism from which equity, representation and justice will flow. No functioning democracy has anything resembling the faulty shambles we call a federation. If you build on a shaky foundation, the house is bound to collapse. . . Nigeria's foundation is very shaky.
