Politics › IBB Aide Warns PDP: Shutting Babangida Out’ll Spell Doom by Beaf(op): 2:22am On Aug 13, 2010
PDP Primaries: Shutting Babangida Out’ll Spell Doom
From Aisha Wakaso in Minna, 08.13.2010

A  political aide to former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida‚  Alhaji Nma Kolo , has warned that any attempt by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to manipulate the party primaries against the retired General will spell doom for the party.

Kolo, who is the National Coordinator of the Nationalist Movement,  a pro-Babangida group,  said they are optimistic that the party will conduct a free and fair primaries,  adding that failure to do that will not augur well for the party.

"Our optimism is anchored on the belief that a free and fair party primary will be conducted because everybody in the party knows the consequences of conducting kangaroo primaries and any attempt to sacrifice free and fair primaries on the altar of some selfish or primordial interests will spell doom for the party and that is the wind that will blow no one any good‚" he said.
Kolo,  who stated  this while speaking with  journalists in Minna yesterday , said the PDP will be inviting electoral misfortune for itself in the 2011 general elections if it attempts to shut Babangida out of  the 2011 Presidential election.

H said all pro-Babangida groups  appreciate the arrangement of conducting the presidential primaries in the states at the same time, adding that Babangida will win in no fewer than 32 out of the 36 states of the federation.

"We like the idea that Presidential primaries will be conducted in the states at the same time and that will be the time to prove IBB's popularity because we are confident that IBB will win in no fewer than 32 of the 36 states and Abuja and this is no exaggeration‚" he said.

He advised the PDP to avoid situations where there will be mass defection from the party, adding that it should remember that it is not the only party in the country.

Politics › 2011: Northern Senators Reject Ibb, Atiku by Beaf(op): 2:17am On Aug 13, 2010
2011: Northern senators reject IBB, Atiku
Written by Taiwo Adisa, Abuja
Friday, 13 August 2010

FORMER military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar received the shock of their lives on Wednesday, following the refusal of the Northern Senators Forum (NSF) to back their ambition for the 2011 presidential race in line with the zoning arrangement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Sources at the meeting held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, said that the senators pointedly told the two leaders that they had not shown seriousness about their campaign for the number one seat and that their insistence alone was not enough.

A source said one of the senators told the ex-leaders that it was wrong of them to start canvassing zoning, when they had led Nigeria as a united entity before now.

Another senator was said to have told the two leaders that if they were serious, one of them would have agreed to step down for the other and that their failure to yield the position to the other meant that they were playing games.

It was also gathered that IBB pleaded with the lawmakers to consider the interest of the North and support their agitation for zoning.

The former president was also said to have complained that the senators rejected his earlier request for them to back the retention of polling order, which makes the presidential election to come last in the order of elections.

The IBB camp had lobbied the senators in July to retain the polling order, as recommended by the Senator Isiaka Adeleke-led INEC committee, but the president’s camp intervened and ensured that presidential election comes second on the election order.

Another source quoted one of the senators as telling the ex-leaders to up their campaign and make it known to the South-South that it could not use oil as a bargaining chip for the presidency.

The senator from the North-West was said to have said that there were many countries without oil and which were surviving well.

“If the South-South is banking on oil to bargain, then they don't have anything to bargain with," the senator was said to have told the gathering.

However, Atiku was said to have declared that he and IBB would ensure that only a northern president would be acceptable to them in 2011.

naijaking1:
Subsidizing food items better not be the official economic policy of this regime.
It's very short termed, diversionary, and simply creats more loop holes for corruption. We're still battling fuel subsidies started on the same premise. While it's popular of course, many economist will agree that it's very short term at best and almost criminal at worst, because for every $100 shared out to the milling masses, officials usually misappropriate another $1000.
How about making it easier to produce these items in Nigeria?
Its actually a scheme to buy direct from farmers in a way that ensures that their produce does not waste and ensures they are renumerated.
So its killing many birds with one stone.

Of course, the food in the national reserve cannot last forever as well, so why not sell at subsidised prices that will be balm for many a hungry belly?

Good move I'd say.
