From https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-383774.0.html What follows is an except from the Guardian story, "Why Obama Hit Nigeria Very Hard, Mutallab Inquest Raises Dust" By Martins Oloja (Abuja Bureau Chief in London) http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/news/article13//indexn3_html?pdate=170110&ptitle=Why%20Obama%20Hit%20Nigeria%20Very%20Hard,%20Mutallab%20Inquest%20Raises%20Dust&cpdate=170110 Indeed, a US diplomat was last week quoted as saying that the mysterious absence of Nigeria's ailing President from the diplomatic scene at this critical juncture has been largely responsible for the impasse between Abuja and Washington DC. The veteran diplomat had asked rhetorically: "Where on earth is Nigeria's President in all this, " The credible report on the reason the US government included Nigeria on the "high risk" terror list, had also cited absence of Nigeria's Ambassador to the United States, at this critical moment as another critical factor that shaped the negative development. But The Guardian was told last week that the Farouk Mutallab foiled attempt to blow up a US-bound plane on Christmas day last year, was just the last straw. There are more hard, but hidden facts behind the news of blacklisting of Nigeria, according to diplomats, some of who had served in Nigeria. According to them, even as they spoke quietly, some elected leaders who had threatened to encourage Nigeria's breaking of diplomatic ties with US, are part of the trouble with Nigeria, as they play the ostrich by looking the other way when Nigerian leaders fail to deal with sectarian crises. Specifically, one of them said: "US diplomats who have been on the Nigeria's beat for some time are aware that Nigerian leaders have not punished any of the perpetrators of sectarian crises in the northern parts of the country. They have always arrested religious rioters, charged them to court and released them without diligent prosecution, we know this, They have never used any Commission of Inquiry reports to punish any perpetrators or to chart the way forward, " The former diplomat revealed further: "We have also noted that when Intelligence and Security agencies file warning reports to the central government on how to prevent sectarian crises, the government has always failed to direct action agencies to prosecute perpetrators diligently. This has led to belief within the Western diplomatic community that Nigeria's Government shields misguided elements who abuse Islamic religion to perpetrate evil, including terror within the country, " "Besides, we read how the horrible Boko Haram mayhem in Borno State would have been averted if the federal government had made use of the many intelligence reports filed to deal with the planners. Now we are aware that there is a very educated sectarian leader in Zaria, Kaduna state, (in North West, Nigeria) who has been training militants to disturb the peace of the Country." . . . "We are aware that the militants, like the Boko Haram masterminds, want leaders to embrace Islam as state religion, So, we are rather amused when your critics of the new American policy say that Nigeria is not a breeding ground for terrorists, For us, Nigeria is a fertile ground and that was how Farouk was born and bred, We are aware that Farouk Mutallab is not alone. What of the very credible story (in The Guardian, Nigeria) that two sons of two former Chief Justices of Nigeria are also involved? We are aware that the two former Chief Justices are Moslems from the North too, " Further inquiries by The Guardian revealed that American diplomats also believe that Nigerian leaders pay only lip service to the secularity status enshrined in the country's constitution. Those who spoke frankly on the classification of Nigeria as a "high risk" terror zone said available facts and figures of the composition of the federal government and the Nation's capital, which should be symbol of Nigeria's unity, are paradigm of how Nigeria drifts officially towards an Islamic state. This is what he said: "The chief executives of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Voice of Nigeria, Nigerian Television Authority are all Moslems and from the North, The Chairman of Aso Radio, the General Manager of Aso Radio, the General Manager of Aso Television are all from the North and they are all Moslems, " Our diplomatic source said, last November, 95, 700 Nigerians mostly from the North joined about two million Moslems from all over the world on pilgrimage to Mecca. Nigeria is said to produce the second largest number after Indonesia in this seasonal pilgrimage to Mecca, and some northern states in Nigeria have introduced Sharia laws in their states despite the secularity the constitution provides, " "What is more, this is the region where they always organise processions and chants of anti-Israeli and anti-American slogans with impunity, No one checks this and many more". http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/news/article13//indexn3_html?pdate=170110&ptitle=Why%20Obama%20Hit%20Nigeria%20Very%20Hard,%20Mutallab%20Inquest%20Raises%20Dust&cpdate=170110 |

JNdupu:JTF is led by mainly Hausa / Fulani people. Balla Na' Allah who said all 17 million Niger Deltans should be wiped out was not met with any Northern outcry or outrage; not even the slightest whimper. Over the decades we have had pogrom after pogrom of Southerners by religious extremists up North. . . Not a single person has been convicted from 1960 till date. Rather, most Northern states have instituted sharia and made strenous arguments that Nigeria is not a secular country. With the above and several other unmentioned incidents, it is easy to conclude that the Hausa / Fulani feel superior to Southerners and have no regard for Southern lives. Southerners are now tired. |

He (Mutallab) was said to have confessed to the investigators that he indeed reported to the former NSA, General Aliyu Gusau, who in turn informed an officer in NIA who was told by Mutallab to treat the issue informally. Corruption always has a way of turning around and biting back. The issue was treated informally and the boy became a terrorist that has singlehandedly affected the international outlook of a nation. But as an American official told us last week, "we regard all religious riots in Nigeria including Kala Kato, Hurra Boko Haram as Alqaeda and terror elements that must be dealt with very decisively. Nigerian officials must note that, "Excellent. |

Before the intercontinental intelligence collaboration with the security agencies, the Nigerian intelligence outfit headed by the National Security Adviser, Major Gen A. Sarki Mukhtar (rtd) had grilled Alhaji Umaru Mutallab over why he reported his son's whereabouts at the American Embassy and to former National Security Adviser, instead of the Nigerian security and intelligence agencies. Interestingly, he (Mutallab) is the current Chairman of the Barewa Old boys Association and some of the top chiefs in the intelligence and security community in Nigeria, including the Director General of the State Security Service, Mr A. Gadzama are active members he has had access to. We learnt the former Chairman of the First Bank, Mutallab who was accompanied to the interrogation venue in Abuja by his lawyer, Alhaji Mouftah Baba-Ahmed was specifically asked why he did not report the issue with his son to the relevant agencies in his country. We were told that the distraught Mutallab who has been invited to testify at the United States Senate Committee on foreign relations on January 20, reportedly told the investigators that, "I was really confused" about the agencies to report to. The inquest was said to have revealed that the Nigerian Intelligence Agency, the NSA reportedly queried through a letter dated December 28, 2009 as exclusively reported by The Guardian actually did not get the report directly. He (Mutallab) was said to have confessed to the investigators that he indeed reported to the former NSA, General Aliyu Gusau, who in turn informed an officer in NIA who was told by Mutallab to treat the issue informally. It was revealed to the inquirers who quizzed Alhaji Mutallab that, thereafter the NIA officer allegedly concealed the intelligence he revealed, probably due to the transition going on then in the agency (NIA), where Ambassador Omehe was then handing over to Amb. E O Oladeji, who was queried by the NSA over the problem created by the Christmas day botched terror act. Meanwhile, The Guardian was told that the American and British intelligence operatives have wondered, "why the Nigerian news media have failed in their professional responsibility to help do some profiling of the influential father of Farouk, about what he knew about his son, his relationship with his son, when he last saw his son, when he last gave him money, why he (Farouk) had a Yemen connection, precisely where he Umaru Snr had a marital relations, his business and religious connections with Yemen, now a flash point in religious extremism, " We learnt that the CIA, FIB, and M16 (British) officials that have been collaborating with their Nigerian counterparts have wondered why no Nigerian media organ had interviewed the Chairman of JAIZ Bank, Alhaji Mutallab on the points at issue, specifically on what he did not tell the American Embassy and Nigerian officials. The Guardian learnt that the interrogation Mutallab had gone through also covered: "the sources of his wealth and the houses he has acquired in choice places in London, including the one his son was staying in London as a student, " Meanwhile, sources close to the interrogation and collaboration with the CIA and FIB said the American security officials that have been classified as part of what their President specifically called "systemic failure" have been answering from their Nigerian counterparts why the American government decided to classify Nigeria as a terror "high risk zone," even before investigation began. Investigation said that most of them agreed that the classification was "rushed by forces beyond their control in Washington D.C, where the decision was taken by politicians and state officials that have been thoroughly criticized, even as it has turned out that the inability of President Obama to speak directly to his Nigerian counterpart, now recuperating in Saudi played a major role in the politics that shaped the noisy classification. But as an official said the weekend, "one of the reasons the Obama government is reportedly desperate for a strong African leader to engage in diplomacy, is that Nigerian government has consistently failed to bring suspects in the serial religious riots in the northern part of Nigeria to book. They have never demonstrated seriousness in that area" Coincidentally, It was former president Olusegun Obasanjo who had last week told the BBC as reported by The Guardian that citizen Farouk Mutallab must first be condemned by the government and the Nigerian government should assure the American government that it was doing everything possible to prevent a recurrence of the December 25, 2009 terror act by the 23 years old Nigerian. Obasanjo had then said it was only that measure that could affect the American disposition towards de-classification, when necessary. But as an American official told us last week, "we regard all religious riots in Nigeria including Kala Kato, Hurra Boko Haram as Alqaeda and terror elements that must be dealt with very decisively. Nigerian officials must note that, " http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/news/article13//indexn3_html?pdate=170110&ptitle=Why%20Obama%20Hit%20Nigeria%20Very%20Hard,%20Mutallab%20Inquest%20Raises%20Dust&cpdate=170110 |

Drugs: American Varsity Expels Yar’Adua’s Nephew, Others From Matthew Onah in Yola, 01.18.2010 Adamawa A nephew of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Akilu Musa Yar’adua, aged 18, was expelled by the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, over his alleged involvement in drug-related offences. Akilu, son of late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, elder brother to the President, who was Chief of Staff Supreme Headquarters during General Olusegun Obasanjo’s military administration from 1976 to 1979, was one of the 10 students expelled by the elite institution over various offences. Speaking at the orientation organised for new batch of intakes of about 300 students, weekend, Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. David Kosoko, said the institution has zero tolerance for all vices within and outside its campus and charged the new intakes to strictly conform with the institution's rules and regulations. He said authorities of the school would not hesitate to show any deviant student the way out, no matter how privileged the family might be. Kosoko said 10 students were expelled for various offences, out of which six were expelled over drugs, and four over laptop thefts, adding that four others were suspended for various infractions against the school regulations. He said a disciplinary committee of the university had to invite the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to test the students involved and ascertain their levels of involvement in drug usage. Kosoko, who declined to mention the type and quantity of the illicit drugs found with the students, said an almost foolproof system of checking vices such as drugs and cultism have been put in place by the institution to check their students and call on other tertiary institutions in the country to come and learn from AUN, Yola. http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=164434 |

Nigeria: Alkali Denies Cracks in PDP Over Yar'Adua Muideen Olaniyi 17 January 2010 The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday dismissed media reports of a sharp division within the leadership of the party over the absence of ailing President Umaru Musa Yar'adua. Yar'adua has been away for more than 50 days now, a situation that has fuelled speculations of frantic moves to search for a new Vice President by at least 6 power blocs within the PDP. A report even suggested that former President Olusegun Obasanjo left Thursday's Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting which he presided over in a sad mood because attempt to rally support for the emergence of Vice President Goodluck Jonathan as 'Acting President' hit a brick wall. But PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, denied the reports accusing desperate opposition politicians of trying to use the media to sow a seed of discord within their ranks. Alkali said: "We view stories purporting a division within the party on the basis of any succession arguments as unnecessary distractions and also as attempts to break the cohesion that currently prevails in the party." Alkali said the party would remain united and focused in praying for the quick recovery of the President. http://allafrica.com/stories/201001180013.html |
