This is a beautiful map of how to divide Nigeria to achieve progress quickly, and without religious fanaticsm.
I seriously think that Southerners are much better off settling their problems (especially Igbo vs Yoruba), so that we can leave these sharia mongers to themselves. This madness doesn't manifest amongst the Muslims in Western Nigeria, there is something wrong up North.
Everything thats happening in Nigeria right now just portends very serious problems. It will be easier for the South to unite as one country and prosper.
Imagine society that can produce animals who are willing to die for a cause, which is to remain uneducated! Damn! Damn! Damn!

As of 2009, the following states have instituted Sharia:

Kaduna State
Zamfara State (January 27, 2000)
Kano State (June 21, 2000)
Sokoto State
Katsina State
Bauchi State (June 2001)
Niger State (January 13, 2000)
Borno State
Jigawa State
Kebbi State
Gombe State
Yobe State

Can anybody tell me there's no problem with this? shocked

Some detail on these uneducated murderers called Boko Haram.
Why are we in the same country? From Muhamadu Mawa Maitasine to these bastards - the North always produces them.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jul/27/boko-haram-nigeria-attacks

A self-styled "Taliban" intent on imposing sharia law on all Nigerians widened its offensive yesterday in violence that has left 150 people dead.

Boko Haram, an Islamic group opposed to western education, has launched attacks across four northern provinces over the last two days and declared its intention to fight to the death.

Civilians were pulled from their cars and shot, their corpses then left scattered around the streets, witnesses told the BBC. . .

The predominantly Muslim north has progressively ushered in a stricter enforcement of sharia law since 2000.

Boko Haram, which models itself on the Taliban but has no known link, began its string of attacks in the northeastern city of Bauchi on Sunday after some of its members were arrested.

Around 70 militants armed with guns and grenades targeted a police station but were driven back by officers and soliders who then raided neighbourhoods, resulting in at least 55 deaths and up to 200 arrests. The Bauchi state governor imposed a night-time curfew as a result.

Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf, leader of Boko Haram, which literally means "education is prohibited", claimed that the government had been targeting his followers and they would never surrender.

He told Nigeria's Daily Trust newspaper: "What I said previously that we are going to be attacked by the authorities has manifested itself in Bauchi, where about 40 of our brothers were killed, their mosque and homes burnt down completely and several others were injured and about 100 are presently in detention. Therefore, we will not agree with this kind of humiliation, we are ready to die together with our brothers and we would never concede to non-belief in Allah."

He added: "I will not give myself up. If Allah wishes, they will arrest me; if Allah does not wish, they will never arrest me. But I will never give up myself, not after 37 of my followers are killed in Bauchi. Is it right to kill them, is it right to shoot human beings? To surrender myself means what they did is right. Therefore, we are ready to fight to die.

"Democracy and the current system of education must be changed otherwise this war that is yet to start would continue for long."

Bauchi, Yobe, Borno and Kano are among the 12 of Nigeria's 36 states that started a stricter enforcement of Islamic law in 2000 – a decision that has alienated sizeable Christian minorities and sparked bouts of sectarian violence that has killed thousands.

Clashes in Bauchi in February killed at least 11 people and wounded dozens. A Muslim group attacked Christians and burned churches in reprisals over the burning of two mosques, which Muslims blamed on Christians.

Mr Yusuf's followers in Bauchi are known as Boko Haram, which means "Education is prohibited". http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8169966.stm

Damn! In the North that is deprived because of lack of education, people want to fight security agents, rape loot and kill. . . Just to promote ignorance! These people sprang from within a value system that is only a few degrees to the left of their ideology. How many of the states affected actively practice sharia in a secular state? To hell with them!

Thez are mere criminals intended to spoil the name of Islam,go study, search the Holy Qur'an,there is nothing like violence. There are Yoruba muslims, even among the igbos, but such have never happened in there place before. The simple, truth is that these HOODLUMS are drug addicts,& they are not muslims becos ISLAM stands for PEACE.
The problem is not whether they are true Muslims or not. It is that, in the North, they find it easy to commit callous crimes against Southerners. The slightest thing that happens they burn, loot, rape and kill. Several Northern states have employed sharia against the unity of the country, thus encouraging various groups of thieves and murderers. Damn! The present crop of criminals even base their ideology on hatred for education!

I am not against Islam, but it is time for the North to extract themselves and their sharia states from Nigeria. Their style is too dangerous and backward.

Before people start going gung-ho, how many shares does Lukman own in the company?

London, 24 July 2007 - Afren was notified today that Dr Rilwanu Lukman, non-executive Chairman, has sold 1,437,000 ordinary shares of 1p each at a price of 70.359 pence per share. The share sale was effected on 16 July and settlement took place on 20 July.

These shares have been held since the inception of the Company in 2004. Part of the proceeds will be used by Dr Lukman in support of the philanthropic endeavours in which he is involved in West Africa.

Following this disposal, Dr Lukman remains beneficially interested in 6,000,000 ordinary shares which represent 2.24 per cent. of the issued share capital of the Company.

http://www.afren.com/latest_327.asp

London, 18 December 2008 - Afren plc ("Afren" or the “Company”) announces that Dr Rilwanu Lukman, has been appointed as Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources. Following Dr Lukman’s appointment as Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources, he has stepped down from the Afren Board of Directors. Dr Lukman’s share options have lapsed and he has relinquished all rights under the Founders Investment and Warrants scheme. Dr Lukman has been awarded a bonus of 650,000 shares, which together with his existing shareholding in the Company, will be
held in blind trust.

By all means, destroy AFREN if you want - it will affect ND indigenes more than anyone else since Lukman owns about 3% of the company.
. . .Something very fishy here. Conflict of interest?
I think this company needs to be relocated to Kaduna to go with the current fad.

If that forum repesents the average Chinese, all Africans and African Americans might need to keep away from the Chinese.

I have said it elsewhere that MEND is fighting a very intelligent war. They are employing the weaknesses of the country (corruption and greed) in inventive ways to forward their cause.
The harder the govt fights them, the weaker the govt becomes (in exponential terms). The govt fighting MEND is like a cancer feeding on itself; an unwinnable war of attrition.
. . .And yes, the govt will fall if the battle continues. So MEND might well be called insurgents.

At least MEND have made Nigeria a leader in "Open Source Warfare".

I am ready for positive change after what i have seen on ground. Please leave me a contract e-mail and as soon as i am in London i will contact you. Time for like minds to come together to give it our last try.

It is now time for all meaning Nigerians in Europe to stand shoulder to shoulder in order to jointly look for ways in which we can do anything no matter how small.

Beaf has come up with an idea and I think it is an option which we should explore. E-mailing one another on Nairaland will not solve the problem.

People have made it expressly clear that we do not want the white man back, so we need to look for ways in which we can stop the white man from coming back – this is not a money making venture and anyone nurturing such ideas should please stay away from this forum. It is about like mind professionals coming together to influence government policy and actually making a difference back home. I have a thousand and one ideas but finding like mind professionals has always being a problem.

The future is now and we need to ask fast.

@Kobojunkie
The average Nigerian does not gain much from FG money, so won't feel any real change in circumstances.
To prove my point, there has been a sharp drop in revenues (at least 50%) since last year, but life continues for the average person (each senator earns above £12,000.00 basic shocked - much more than the equivalent Western politician!).

Most of the money is spent amongst the Abuja bigwigs. By tightening its hold on their finanfial jugular, MEND will release their iron grip on power and begin the important task of drastically reducing attraction of the centre.
Politics › Re: Bauchi Islamists / Police Clashes by Beaf: 11:30pm On Jul 26, 2009
A number of Northern states have adopted sharia 100%; this in a secular democracy and to the detriment of our constitution.

So why the suprise when some of these folk begin to feel that their duty in life is to impose sharia across the country?

All sharia states might as well pull out.

In a serious country, all sharia agitators (and their Christian equivalents) would have been outlawed or taken care off like the Branch Davidians.
Politics › Re: Nigeria's Oil Revenue Cut By Half In The Ist Quarter by Beaf: 11:03pm On Jul 26, 2009
The budget for this year is already in trouble as the country is producing much less oil than its figures are based on. MENDs actions have brought the current deficit to 5% of GDP as of June. The govt will have to borrow to make up the deep deficits that would have acrued by the end of the fiscal year. From 3 million BPD in 2008, Nigeria is now producing only 1.2 million BPD; which amounts to one third of capacity.

Nigeria is in deep, deep trouble.

For so long, we have accepted all sorts of injustice and barbarous levels of wickedness as norm, aside from the extreme levels of pollution; the Niger Delta has suffered the following:
[li]Odi massacre (2500 dead including; babies, women, children and the elderly)[/li]
[li]20 Niger Delta communities wiped off the surface of Earth since 1999[/li]
[li]50,000 dead since 1999[/li]
[li]The death of Ken Saro Wiwa (a peaceful ND leader)[/li]
More than 1.5 million tons of oil, equivalent to one Exxon-Valdez disaster every year for 50 years, have spilled into the delta, poisoning delicate mangrove and rain forest ecosystems and destroying fishing and farming livelihoods.
http://www.pambazuka.org/en/category/comment/57769/print

Yet, up North beasts are allowed to run amock, fighting for sharia to cover the whole country; while the goose that lays the golden egg is slowly poisoned. Isn't this slavery? Thankfully, MEND is "negotiating" with the govt in the only language the oligarchy and their allies understand. Let the worst happen.

Below is an image of how we farm in seas of oil because, as long as money flows and every state gets their share of blood money, no one gives a shit.

The FG's desition is like locating the following  in Warri with the reason being "O, come on. Come on; the place I went to study at the Federal College of Science and Technology in London. It is the biggest training ground for mining and petroleum engineers, and there is not a drop of oil in London".

i. stock exchange
ii. leather research institute
iii. cattle decease research institute
iv. coal research institute
v. tin research institute
vi. coal research institute
vii. bauxite research institute
viii. gold research institute
ix.  iron ore research institute
x. cashew nut factory

There is something wrong with trying to farm fish in sand, so we put them in ponds.
The same thing that is wrong with all the above suggestions is wrong with the siting of a petroleum institution (or a refinery for that matter) in Kaduna.

Yar Adua is a very tiring man. At the height of crisis in the ND, he springs this!
The funniest part of this ridiculous story is that London, which Lukman mentioned isn't even in Nigeria.

@bariga

You might be frustrated, but you arent the only one. Instead of suggesting stupid things like inviting the return of colonial masters, lets look within ourselves (not at govt).
The key is that you arent the only one thats frustrated; there are lots of others, both within and outside the country who feel the same way, maybe even worse than you.

We can:
[li]group together[/li] [li]identify issues to tackle[/li][li]sources of technical support[/li][li]financial support[/li][li]build confidence within and outside of the group[/li]
I and a couple of others attempted something like this a few years ago, but perhaps we were too early; the groundswell didn't exist. The funny thing is; we were mocked everywhere by fellow Africans, but applauded by Westerners who were also quick to offer unsolicited assistance. Because, our plan was based on building from the grassroots, we were doomed without African support and ran in fits and starts, finally things fizzled out (temporarily) last year. The biggest problem is not politicians, but African self confidence (afterall, Italy, as corrupt as it is, is developed and in the G8). On average, African confidence actually buckles when tasked with science, technology or invention; that is why top African minds only find fulfilment outside our shores. What a loss! This lack of confidence is not due to any lack in abilities, maybe it is from long colonisation or the effect of dictatorships.

I remember coming to NL for support and a huge number of idiots made fun, because we offered free inventions and free technical help (they thought it was some kind of 419). We will have another go at it in August (with some changes grin). Among our free inventions were; yam harvester, plantain harvester and various energy devices.

Who in Africa does not know that it is not in our tradition even in the stone ages to cast aspersions on elders?
I beg to disagree. Criticism is not rudeness or "casting aspersion". Traditional rulers aren't deity's and have no say, either in politics or outside their realms.

Focust:
Like any educated person, he knows that there is nothing Islamic about the texts. What was written was simply the denominations of the Naira amount in Hausa using arabic texts. By removing them from the currency, the Govt. merely succeded in adding to the confusion on millions of nigerians who somehow relied on those hausa arabic text to be able to know the amount. How come no one is making any noise about the motto of Nigerian Army which is clearly islamic and written in arabic texts, 'victory in the name of Allah?' Why did they not change it say 'victory in the name of Jesus?'
That is news to me and I am educated. Not being able to read Arabic, I always thought it was Islamic and wondered why it was on the national currency. You know why it was suspicious? English, not Arabic is our national language. Having Arabic inscriptions on official tender speaks of an Islamic influence.
As for those who can no longer tell the Naira denominations, because Arabic is gone from the notes; a little education will help and go a long way toward cementing relations between North and South.

Focust:
The truth of the matter is that all those mudane things do not matter in any nation striving to grow. Does it mean that because the Govt. has refused to recognise the Islamic calendar i should stop going to work on Friday alongside other Muslims in the Arab countries? Should i turn down medical attention from the Red Cross just because they have a CROSS as their symbol?
Being from the Niger Delta, it is especially easy to perceive the army fighting under the motto, "victory in the name of Allah" (in Arabic) is totally allienated from people who are non-religious, Christians or animists (most of Southern Nigeria).
Perhaps, that is why there have been countless slaughters, such as the wiping out of Odi.
It is an Islamic army with no bearing on non-Muslims.

Focust:
I personally believe in the Nigerian dream but to be honest anytime i read 'stone-age' comments like the ones expressed some of the writers, i pray to God to hasten the peaceful dissolution of this country so that we all can go our seperate ways with our dignity intact.

God bless Nigeria, for now!
I believe you have spoken candidly from your viewpoint. God bless your maturity, same goes to Abdkabir.
