Working conditions are as bad as in Turkey? That's kind of an exaggeration. In fact, some of the treatment meted out to our people in some of these countries is because of our involvement in nefarious activities. Recently some of our folks in Istanbul committed fraud, and because of that a bank in Turkey banned all Nigerians from using their online banking system. I hope you are not referring to racism, cos i'll take the racism in Turkey over most of these other countries especially the US.
Danielhouston:
I haven’t been to Panama but I’ve been to Israel and Israel is one of the worst places you can be as a black person. The racism there is beyond disgusting and they don’t hide it. Get ready to be held at the airport for 12 hours of questioning, without food.

Doesn’t even matter if you’re a black person with an EU passport. They’ll literally separate you from the crowd just to humiliate you. Working conditions are as bad as in Turkey, for Black people. You should see how they treat the Ethiopians who are also Jews. If you still intend to go and “hustle” there, good luck. You asked and I gave you my opinion based on experience.

No, it should be, for every 50 yahoo boys, there's one Nigerian impacting positively somewhere out there.
Iamundisputed:
So what should I do? Nigerians are still better than South Africans in my own opinion. Nobody asked them for what they think about us as a people because for every one Yahoo boy, there are 100 Nigerians making impact all over the world. We shouldn't give the world a chance to insult us. At the end of the day, it's innocent Nigerians that would be attacked by those ones.

PS: if not for Nigerian bloggers this issue wouldn't have leaked cos no major foreign TV had direct information about his arrest. We too cast ourselves.

Sounds right? We are not discussing feelings, man. grin
Joebie:
Well there is no standard definition to it. But I would like you to ask the world class question as regards Ozil, and let' see if it would sound right. Else, it supports my position.
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by benji93: 8:41pm On Jun 12, 2020
We agree to disagree. World-class itself can be used in two lights. Momentarily or extensively(all-time). Was Ozil world-class 5/6 years ago, yes. But all-time, maybe not. He dominated for about 5 years. I consider that borderline all-time. If your argument is, once you attain world-class, even if your form deeps, the potential to ascend to that point still exists, I'll probably take it. Ozil has been a journeyman for over 4 years and still counting. He probably has settled with the journeyman status. If he lost form, and 1 or 2 years into his struggles, you ask me if he is still world-class, I'll probably say yes without thinking twice. 5 years of dominance followed by 4 years of Journey-man status in your role cannot be considered world-class momentarily, and perhaps borderline world-class all-time, IMO.
Joebie:
I said they are used in a similar vein. That does not mean on the same level. I’m speaking in respect to what happens next after you attain that status in whatever context. While legend can be used at a period that that player etc is not longer active, world class is used when they are still active. It takes a lot to achieve world class status. If a player achieves that status and then lose form for an extended spell, can the player still be described as world class? I say yes.
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by benji93: 3:04pm On Jun 12, 2020
I am afraid I don't quite agree with your first sentence. World-class and Legend are not quite on the same level. You attain world-class status, then you become a legend. You could definitely get stuck and never attain the legendary status. Even legends at the club level may not necessarily pass as legends in football. Although i agree with your other point. The question get as he be. It's not quite clear what kind of treatment it needs..
Joebie:
I think the term word class is used in a similar vein with legend. However if you ask if a player is world class at a particular moment it can be interpreted as present performance. I think there is something wrong with the question in the first place. I agree with Nerdie. Is Ozil a world class player? Yes, because world class is a status you earn and is somewhat permanent.

But if you ask is Ozil presently a world class player? Don’t the question sound awkward?

So Safarigirl that twitter debate get k leg.

Any black guy that tries to crucify a white man for saying that doesn't really know what they are doing. If you chose to have white friends, fine by me. however in a working environment if you decide to give a less competent white man a position we are both vying for, then that's something i would have a problem with. And it's definitely within your right not to continue discussing such a controversial topic. Good luck.
elunico:
How would that sound if it's coming from a white man? When a white man says: I don't have any Black friends. He dares not, else he gets hanged and shamed publicly.

Merriam-Webster is planning on redefining Racism, it'd be interesting to see what they come up with.

I've been insulted here enough, I'm done with this topic.
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by benji93: 11:07pm On Jun 11, 2020
Some may say you are reading too much meaning to the question. If we take that question literally, they are both no longer world-class. I mean if that question is only a prelude to making an informed decision such as playing any of those in your team. Ozil was world-class for about 5 years. Whether that is worthy of all-time great status is another thing, which depends on your criteria for such a status.
TheSuperNerd:
Marcelo and Ozil are no more at the peak of their powers which may make someone who began watching football this year or last year to think both have always been average or just above average but when they were at the peak of their powers and much younger, they were Absolutely World class. Marcelo was the World's best Left back for years. Both attained World class status and held that status for a good number of years.

Their decline today is expected b'cos there comes a time when one must exist the stage in football and see his powers wane (exceptions are football gods like Pele, Maradona, Messi, CR7) but it doesn't suddenly erase the fact that both are World Class names with years of World Class showings under their belt.

So yes, I still consider them World Class by established reputation but not by current form b'cos "World Class" is not a status you get to in one season but by virtue of consistent world class showings over several seasons backed by a couple of titles too.

So they are World Class but they are World Class in Form decline. When they retire, they will be referred to World class talents who graced the stage.

Man, you may need to check the dictionary again for the definition of racism, at least basically, cos, in reality, it has been known to take different forms some, subtle. Choosing not to befriend whites is not racism, at least on the face of it. And you may want to understand what the other guy means by "my friend". It doesn't mean he sees whites as lesser humans. He could still have a cordial relationship with his white colleagues. Perhaps he just doesn't connect with his white colleagues as a kindred and that's ok.We all have different experiences, which predispose us to different associations.
elunico:
[b]After calling me a KKK red neck mofo, racist and an Uncle Tom, I don't know why I still find it in me to reply u.

I can call you racist for not having White friends even though you're within their environment, oh, I forgot, Blacks can never be racist, it doesn't fit the victim narrative.

When I say black, I'm talking about those Black Americans still bitter about the slave trade my ancestors took no part in, I'm talking about those who are always jealous when ever they see a young African man being successful in a land they've failed to cut it, I'm talking about those ones who despise their black skins so much.

I'm cool with them Africans, the Eastern ones have respect for us, the Southerners, they're here and there, and a couple of Nigerian guys have tried to rip me off. The ladies are even worse, they mostly don't want anything to do with a Nigerian.

My group consists of the Asians and more Latinos as well, we respect each other we are also frank with each other. So, forgive me if I'm inclined to having a more diverse group of people I network with and also call friends.

True. Information about good quality research in Nigeria is close to non-existent. I have been checking the publication history of some of the professors at the supposed best universities in Nigeria, and so far I can't help but say I am quite disappointed. Most of them publish in 3rd and 4th quarter journals(scimago). You probably know this information cos you studied somewhere else. Most Nigerian researchers either do not know where/how to publish or their research is just of low quality, so they keep running into these predatory journals. I wonder, do the funding institutions (Teffund) not check the quality of the research proposals of their grantees and monitor the research activities that follow. perhaps they are incapable of effectively regulating the quality of the research output of their grantees.
2fine2fast:
Of course you can pay processing fee for open access. I stated clearly that are ethical issues to that effect, this is a feauture that is being exploited by predatory publisher. As a matter of policy, my faculty for one frowns on it, this I have also imbibed. Of course there are different policies and expectations across various faculties in the world, whatever advances each's prospects.

Our argument is summarised in the lines below:

"The researchers do all the research. They format their documents on computers. They act as editors for the journals for free to select papers and reviewers. They do the peer-review for free. The remaining few admin tasks can be automated with software. Electronic distribution can be done by the repositories. What are they actually paying the publishers these huge fees for then?.

Thanks and regards.

Good observation. However, some researchers still pay a publication processing fee for open access. In which case researchers can access publications by a journal featured by a publisher(springer for example) for free, on publication. If it's not open access, you can only gain access publications by subscribing individually or courtesy of subscription made my an organization/institution on your behalf.
2fine2fast:
Congratulations Dr Ihim.

However, Nairaland is supposed to be an educative platform like the likes of Reddit, Quora, etc. And I will continue to view it as such.
Thus, permit me to educate interested fellows and upcoming scientist in my own little way.
1. A search of the article on "google scholar", a search engine dedicated for academic publications showed that
the study was done in 2015. So can someone kindly tell me the media hype surrounding the publication 5 years
after?
2. The principal investigator of the research was Murad Bani Hani, being listed as the first author. Our compatriot is
the second author. In scientific research, and i would like to believe in all other types of researches, the main credit of
the work is given to the first author who most atimes carried out the main part of the study.
3. Furthermore, the journal in which the study was published " BMC Nursing" is a low-tier journal in the circle of serious
scientific publications. It has no real "Impact Factor" which is usually the Clarivate Analytics ranking of the impact of
journals. I for once would not consider publishing my work in such journals. In addition BMC journals are not well-indexed,
researches are considered to be valuable when they are placed in top-indexed, peer-reviewed journals published by Nature,
Elsevier, Springer, ACS , RSC, sometimes MDPI, and a few others I cannot recollect now.
4. In addition, the journal attracts a publication fee. This is a well-known trait of predatory journals which is considered an
ethical issue in academics. Why would i carry out a cutting edge research and still pay money to inform the scientific community
about it. Here in my faculty, all research published in paid journals raise concerns as it is believed they did not undergo rigorous
peer review which is the hallmark of scientific communication.

Like i said earlier, this post is only meant to educate and not to vilify. It is also meant for the perusal of upcoming scientist in Nigeria.
All through my study in NG, we never had this basic orientation. We came to better environment and realised that we knew close to
nothing of the real scientific world and had to handle around for a while before we got our footings. An article like this making the headline
and being celebrated on an important platform such as this underscores our knowledge as a country, which is a source of concern for
serious Nigerian researchers scattered around the world. Sometimes ago, it was some people celebrating the sequencing of the COVID-19
genome, by Ghana and Nigeria respectively, these are not scientific feats, they are mere routine laboratory tasks.

In all, lets top celebrating mediocrity as a people as it undermine the respect other nationals have for us. I use this opportunity to pay my respect
to indefatigable Nigerian Researchers doing their nation proud in various laboratories and research institutions scattered all over the world.
Thanks.

How did she let things get out of hand while she was the finance minister? If she still gets international appointments, we could argue it's because of her position as the former MD of world bank. Definitely not due to her work as the finance minister. Appointing a former employee of World bank is actually not a good idea, given we all know what they stand for. I respect her academic qualifications, but i am afraid she failed as the finance minister.

What most understand is only raw talent is enough to make you shine in the youth system. In fact, ultimately that's what the coaches look out for. Most of the coaches don't even know what the phrase "technically good means". grin. For all their talents they need a lot of guidance at that point in their professional careers, cos what makes a good player transcends raw talent, and most of the time the decision to choose the best place for their training lies in the hands of their agents by proxy. That's quite unfortunate. Some of them get a good representation, others not so much. Given their backgrounds, they have very limited choices. The situation is quite complicated.
Icon4s:
Egbon, you too have seen a lot in terms of youth football to easily want to come to this conclusion.

You have seen the various era of our quality Nigerian Youth players(U20s & U17s):
1983-1989
1993-1999
2000s
2013-2019.
You know how most of the graduates of the various teams have ended.

I have seen very obvious talents turn out average our go into oblivion. This particular statement I made a couple of years back, earlier when we first created this thread, turned me against many peeps here.

As highly talented as Manu's 2013 U17 were how many are in the Super Eagles today. Same for Amuneke's 2015 crop.

Youth football is what it is "Youth Football". A graduate of a Youth Team needs to work extremely hard, even with the immense talent, and also pray for Favor to be able to break into limelight as a senior team player.

Chidi Nwakali's case is just one of many. Some U17 graduates don't even end up playing Professional football.

I have just watched the interview as well. He did say that we are not the best in the world, and we are the third in Africa. So, what was he implying? remember Udoh's question was regarding the condition that he wins the Afcon and qualify for the world cup. Is he implying that if we come third, it's just fine? Besides, there was no exaggeration in the report by BBC sport, Africa. He referred to some of the teams like Cameroon and Morocco, that were eliminated earlier in the last tourney. I do not understand what that means if not an excuse ahead of the next Afcon. If you cannot win, then you must have come short in your decisions, some of which could be technical. My main point is I am in support of such an inclusion in his contract NFF should have ambitious too, as he suggested. If he does not win his contract should be terminated. No excuses such as we played well but we did not win, the cohesion between the boys is getting better now, so maybe give him more time blablabla. grin
TheSuperNerd:
The Journos are just taking Rohr's words out of context. Anyone who watched the Rohr interview with Colin Udoh on IG live will see that he only said that (We are not the best team in Africa) to show that winning the Afcon won't be a walk in the park. Rohr never said we cannot or will not win the Afcon.

As usual, many will fall for this. It's just clickbait. I know Rohr have used the "young team" excuse before at Russia 2018 where we were the youngest side at the WC and at Afcon 2019 where we were the second youngest side at the Afcon but to be fair to him as regards that interview, he did acknowledge that we should try to win the Afcon and also make a fine impact at the WC.

I watched the interview and have recordings of it.

As reported by BBC Sport, I hope Rohr is not already finding excuses for a failure that is yet to happen. "We are not the best team in Africa" blablabla. What kind of excuse is that? I kinda agree with NFF's decision to tie this contract to the next Afcon championship and world cup qualification, as some of us have been suggesting here. If he cannot deliver, it's either he's not technically good enough or he's not ambitious enough(talent is not a problem). Whichever is the case, thank him for getting us this far, fire him and get someone better. grin.

Sometimes let's be careful about our instinctual deductions on what's actually happening. We all want what's best for Seyi Olofinjana, but the other guy may have a point. The question is, how well is Olofinjana doing with the wolves youth team. I just checked Wikipedia, and it says that, as of February 2019, he was the loan manager of the team. Based on this although he may be working for Wolves, i do not think he's coaching any of their youth teams currently. I may be wrong, in which case you may provide information that says otherwise. Perhaps you can clarify this if you have access to different information.
komekn:
That's a very difficult questions to answer.

After qualification you need experience some are privileged not ny merit to do both at the same time.

Privilege is not given to Black players when it comes to coaching in the UK and Europe in general.

Considering how many black players play in the EPL 33% and other leagues in England who will make up at least 20% and that's being conservative. How many black managers do we have.

If you go to the football academies you will find illiterate coaches given opportunity over UEFA grade A coaches if the are black.

Is it that Seyi lacks ability absolutely not. But Seyi no matter what he does will always be denied OPPORTUNITY.

That Opportunity denial means he will never get the experience required to underpin his competencies.

All football clubs in England are racist and it is just a question of degree. There are very few who are trying to address the issues but most really don't care. It's racist business as usual.

People use the measurements of promotional representation as a reflection to assess the degree of racism.

In this regard 30% of London is probably black but not up too 0.05% of public and private sector senior management is black.

So unless Seyi comes to Nigeria he will probably never ever get the experience thst his white far less qualified peers will get. And then we will prefer them to him.
