The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has withdrawn the operating license of Skye Bank.

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefile announced the decision of Friday evening in Lagos.

Polaris Bank has been established to assume ownership of the assets and liabilities of Skye Bank.

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation has injected N786bn in the new bank.

The management of the defunct bank was however retained for its good performance.

The defunct Skye Bank has been on CBN’s lifeline since July 2016 and the apex bank says it can no longer continue to intervene to keep the balance liquid.?

I thought MTN Nigeria and the indicted banks claimed they did not breach any law? Why are they negotiating now?

MTN shares rose by 8.9 per cent on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, South Africa, yesterday, following Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s resolve to meet with the telecommunications firm and the indicted banks over the $8.1 billion repatriation fund saga.

The rise in shares is MTN’s biggest in the last six months, but the stock is still down 28 per cent since the $8.1 billion claim was made on August 29, wiping out almost $5 billion of market value.

The CBN said yesterday that it had agreed to negotiations proposed by MTN Nigeria and the four banks involved in the $8.13 billion transfers, which certificate of capital importations were adjudged fraudulent.
It also said the engagement was sequel to the provision of additional information, which is currently being reviewed with a view to arriving at an equitable resolution.
Director of Corporate Communications Department, CBN, Isaac Okorafor, who disclosed this, said the apex bank acknowledged the public interest over the sanctions recently imposed on four deposit money banks (DMBs), but wished to restate that it would continue to welcome foreign investments and investors.
According to Bloomberg, the announcement suggests there may be a way for Johannesburg-based MTN to reach a deal with Nigeria, just as it did two years ago when it negotiated a $5.2 billion fine to about $1 billion and a commitment to list its local business in Lagos.
That penalty was related to subscribers that were not properly registered in the country.
A London-based analyst at Signal Risk, Ronak Gopaldas, who was quoted by Bloomberg, said: “This is a welcome development and cements our initial view that the sanction was unsustainable.
“Considerable damage has already been done in terms of brand damage to Nigeria Inc. and value erosion for MTN. However, a more conciliatory tone will see some of these losses being reversed. It will help calm investors.”
The Apex bank’s statement did not refer to $2 billion of taxes MTN is also accused of owing, a claim that comes from the Attorney General’s office.
Reacting to the development, President, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Olusola Teniola, said: “While this is a step in the right direction, continued dialogue to reach an amicable resolution is a minimum standard expected by the investment community.”
Already, MTN has gone to the Federal High Court to seek redress on the matter.
MTN Group CEO, Rob Shuter, at the just concluded International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Telecoms World in Durban, South Africa, described as a disagreement between the telecommunications firm and the Nigerian authority with a promise to resolve the matter amicably.

Kenya Immigration Department on Wednesday, arrested 12 Chinese nationals for allegedly engaging in prostitution in Nairobi.

Following an intelligence tip-off, a team of crime-busters comprising DCI and immigration officials raided two houses in South C Estate, Nairobi, in a clean up swoop targeting wanted fugitives, human traffickers and other immigration violators.

The two residential houses are suspected to have been operating as brothels.

The arrested foreigners, 8 girls and 4 men were taken to Jomo Kenyatta Airport for processing and subsequent deportation.

Police records shows that one of the men arrested was watch-listed in May 2017 on suspicion of being involved in prostitution and illegal gambling in Kenya. He was later deported and subsequently banned from ever entering the country again but returned using a different passport.

Their arrest comes months after Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’s declared war on illegal immigrants and foreigners doing jobs that should be done by Kenyans.

Two weeks ago, Kenyan police raided the African headquarters of the China Global Television Network in Nairobi and briefly detaining several journalists.

The Chinese embassy in Nairobi has complained over police swoops that have seen its nationals with legal documents hauled into police stations for verification.

Design looks good though ....but I've not been privilledged to use any other UMIDIGI device since my first UMI Iron experience but I must say they got very good designs and light weight too. All my previous devices have been MTK processor based which I the Umidigi One Pro uses ....I'm however taking a sabatical off MTK processor devices once I get my RN5

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has cautioned six students for harbouring members of the opposite sex beyond 10 pm on September 7 and 8 respectively.
According to a notice posted on the Unity Hall notice board on Saturday, September 15, four female students; Grace Aba Serwaa Scheck (B.SC. Business Administration), Nancy Afuakwa (B.Sc. Chemistry), Stabella Fosuaa (B.A. Social Work) and Rita Nyanyo (B.A. Publishing Students) all residents of Room 143 were found to be accommodating a male student past 10pm on September 7 in their room which is against the Hall's rules and regulations.
Similarly, two male students (Papa Kojo Essuman Addison of room 243 and Israel Atumove Wompiah of room 300) were found in female rooms at dawn on September 8.

The notice signed by the Hall Master Dr Emmanuel Gikunoo, said the students have been made to sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour throughout their stay in Unity Hall after apologising to the management of Unity Hall for their actions.
'Taking into account the show of remorse and apology to Unity Hall Management from these students and their parents, they have been cautioned and made to sign an UNDERTAKING to be of good behaviour throughout their stay in the Unity Hall", the notice said.
The notice warned other students that the maximum sanctions would be applied to other offenders in the future.
"This caution goes to all other residents of the Hall. Any similar act will lead to maximum sanctions being applied".
