Well spoken bro. In as much as the CBN is trying to harness from the diaspora, it should not project the country's revival based on that. They should diversify the economy period. The 280 is projected not actual. Currently the I ter bank rate is at 305 to the dollar while BDCs is at 453. 989900D: Inflow generally increases towards December. That said, even when the rate was N160-200 in 2014, the inflow was almost $20b per annum. The expected inflow this year though, is projected to exceed $30b slightly due to your reason (the emboldened), more Nigerians overseas sending money home than say 3-4 years ago, and SOS calls from home due to the comatose economy. Mind you, those overseas still need to work to get the money, pay bills, and e.t.c.
I need to add too that, as the FMDQ market progresses and more foreign investments (portfolio and real/FDI) are sought, there would be increased inflow, maybe not on the scale we would want, but there would be progressive increase in inflows, no matter how little. Also, the more the BM closes in with the 'interbank' the less unofficial inflows we would have, giving some boost to funds trickling in via official channels.
ATM, of the 'projected' estimated average inflow of $2.9b per month from diaspora remittance, less than $200m is currently being sold to BDCs per month, actually less than $150m.
To topic: I don't see any '280' in the article, bar the heading.

Business › Re: Why Banks Suspended Payment Card Use Abroad by bigtt76(f): 4:47pm On Oct 20, 2016 |
You read my mind! CBN be thinking the Diasporas would be the ones to revive the economy right? Let them be angling for it. The current gains of the Naira would soon be shortlived as CBN is now fixing the rate at which the money transfer organizations can payout in Naira in exchange for the dollar locally. This means the remittance from the Diaspora would no longer be lucrative as you mentioned. Also, with the 19 banks suspended, they would experience a gloat in their system whereby they would no longer afford to remit Naira to the customers hence they would no longer partake in the in flow. obailala: Not at all, this has nothing to do with selfishness... Rather it is silly and counterproductive for the CBN to artificially peg the official value of the Naira at a much reduced figure when everyone knows the actual value (blackmarket) is far far higher.
This was the exact reason the Naira was floated in June; to bridge the gap between the official and parallel/blackmarket rates, to encourage foreign investors and diasporan Nigerians to bring more forex into the country and to prevent our numerous dubious businessmen from round-tripping by collecting official rate from banks/cbn and selling it back at the blackmarket with instant N150 to N200 profit per $/£.
The CBN says Nigerians in diaspora remitted $21bn into the country last year; this whooping figure isn't because diasporans now have more money, rather it is because it is now more lucrative to send money home so diasporans now work harder and squeeze themselves to send down every little they make. In return, this increased remittances helps the economy but these silly CBn policies of forcing money transfer organisations (like Westi etc) to exchange at lower rates (even when we know the real value on the streets), such moves only discourages a lot of diasporans from sending money down as they would have wished and I'm yet to fathom how this helps Nigeria. |

This is just a supply induced respite. For God's sake, the naira's true value is dependent on the country's exports and not from hand outs by the diaspora. Don't forget that the diaspora helped bring down the value unintentionally because everyone was trying to cash in on the high dollar to naira exchange rate. With these rates crashing, trust me the inflows too will drop. This in turn will lead to the situation we were in before |

So what of the dollars the banks were to sell to BDCs? Did they source it from the Black market ni? These people are not just telling us the truth. The banks stopped the card transactions after CBN suspended 19 banks from selling their forex. What this meant is that when the banks are suspended, they cannot continue to payout Naira to customers while they have a horde of forex unused in their vaults. They would end up not having Naira again since they cannot use the forex to settle their bills externally without CBN clamping down on them nor can they sell to the BDCs to get Naira. Just watch, when the suspension is lifted, they will resume ....#uselessBanks |
