fstranger:which is why I mentioned the alutas. I spent more time off campus than I would have liked to (almost half, it seemed ). And I got to know quite a number of indigenes. You have to admit that Modakeke are expected "know their place". Plus it was hilarious how Ife thinks its the best thing since sliced bread.Btw I've been close to the "action" and narrowly missed violence. The conflict was real, and rather visceral |
fstranger:oau with a little too many alutas under my belt. Wasted years, shivers |
tpia@:I'm personally only concerned with Ife/Modakeke post Nigeria/post Awo - in short history that can be related to with solvable problems. Hercules pointed out 200 (300?) year old events, its good for history, but honestly, other than lessons learned, is a distraction as far as our present dispensation |
fstranger:We all know this; of course this has no bearing on her question. As for your question as to what they were doing when the politicians were looting. . . What do you expect them to do? Western democracy, which is the only form of government you've always known does not recognize the monarchs, and there is no way, constitutionally ,for them to do anything about the wanton looting by our politicians. This is not true my friend, the did something. They joined in the looting. They even voiced support for scoundrels. The LEAST a honest person would do is be a quiet objector. Nothing you read on this thread should diminish your respect for the Arole Oodua. What happened during the Abacha regime is for historians to figure out. And history will judge whether he did the right thing or not. And most of what is being said about him are mere rumours, manufactured by people, like the Awujale and the Alaafin, bent on tarnishing his image. And we all know why.Ooni diminished himself by his own actions. At least the Oba that sold his birthright for mirrors and gin didnt know he was selling it to his mortal enemy. Ooni knew full well what he was doing. Forgetting Afonja and Ilorin, he went to bed with Abacha, thinking Abacha could help him achieve supremacy over Yorubaland. If you are so sure of Ooni's authenticity, maybe we should bring back one of those old "authentic" practices: when a leader has erred severely, his people show at the palace the next morning, along with the elders and a bowl of hemlock. I'm sure Ooni, being as "authentic" as he is will gladly drink it. |
fstranger:Fortunately, I lived in Ife too, and yes this is how the circa 1996/1997 war started. Anyone who wasn't in Ife at the time could also note that the idea that the tiny Modakeke would initiate provocation against Ife does not follow reason. Ooni's formula was simple: provoke Modakeke repeatedly, wait for them to respond then hand them a severe beating. If anyone is wondering why he could get away with this, witness fstranger's posts and attitude. You can almost get a whiff of the attitude that would murder brothers: as far as he is concerned, Ooni is your father wether you like it or not, and you better do as he says, otherwise you DESERVE to be attacked. |
Awo recognized this, and curtailed theirs powers with his characteristic heavy handedness, something he was never forgiven for. Even the new generation progressives understand this, and make sure to bypass them when hard decisions are taken. Except for very few, most can only be relied upon for window dressing. A Jeep from Aso Rock is all it takes for them to sell out. |
I agree DapoBear. Unfortunately we also have to keep our eye on the Ooni too; it wouldnt be the first time a high profile Yoruba leader would sell out to the highest bidder, at the 11th hour. Thankfully, others of his ilk like Lamidi Adedibu are dead or dying, |
tpia@:Modakeke were Oyo war migrants as you said. They were technically indentured servants because the Ife retained ownership of that land. Hence Modakeke paid homage and taxes to Ife, which is all well and good. To ask for the same homage post Nigeria, and definitely post Awo's western region unification is retarded, and most Yoruba understand this. No Yoruba is slave to another, an idea the Ooni cant wrap his head around obviously. The last, really bloody war during Abach'a regime was triggered by the Ooni sending his men to ransack and disgrace the Modakeke community leader, 1850 style. He was pretty sure he could get away with it, seeing as he was in bed with Abacha at the time. |
Lol at this monkey of a man "preaching" unity. The same m*fcker who wanted to evict Modakeke because they were indentured servants some hundred years ago. Were it not for the army, Ife was intent on wiping them out. Make Ogun punish the b*st*rd in his sleep. |
kabukabu50:My guy wetin do you. Why are you carrying a hand bag? |
Aloy+Emeka:You cant help yourself can you? We all know what you're trying to say. lol |
If you use .NET, you really aren't a programmer, at least not in the traditional sense. You really are a "bare-metal" web designer. The guys designing the .NET libraries would be called programmers. They would have to worry about memory leaks, speed, code reusability and refactoring and a ton of other issues you ccare little about. They might even right portions of the graphics libraries in assembly for performance. That how you spend 8-16 hours a day programming. |
you can take the negro out of the hood, but you cant take the hood out of the negro, apparently. |
Onlytruth:Bad belle for what . Emeagawali winning the Bell prize is an achievement to be proud of. With 2 masters degrees and this kind of accomplishment, he could have built a career on honest hard work and still be a star. Is hating Saraki for looting funds bad belle? Why is it then bad belle to call out dishonest work? When Emeagwali's hype bubble busts, it will be another black eye for Nigerians, tarnishing the stellar achievements others are toiling night and day to achieve. Why are we willing to condone cheating when it suits us, and condemn it when it involves some other party? ![]() |
Lets examine Emeagwali's own recent utterances: I became my own ancestor in physics, my contemporary in mathematics, and descendant in internet science. The equations I invented are akin to the iconic Navier-Stokes equations listed in the Seven Millennium Problems of mathematics. From these two, and the sum of the article at http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/philip-emeagwali/memories-of-colonial-africa.html, I conclude several things: - Emeagwali is borderline delusional. Turing, Stokes, Babbage, Pascal, Gauss, Cauchy, none of these giants that contributed to this field ever said anything like this. And if they did, they would be laughed out of the room. - Emeagwali is an empty barrel. He didnt invent any equations. Solving an equation computationally does not mean you invented it, or invented something akin to it. This is intellectually dishonest. Emeagwali supporters, you deserve the fraud you get. The rest of us want no part of 419 scientists |
Carlosein:Journalists get fired for not vetting stories or making stuff up, even at the New York times. Politicians fake college degrees, and the electoral body does not catch the lie: only to be found out by a citizen journalist weeks to election. All this is in America. Fraud and incompetence are not unique to Nigeria/Africa, contrary to all you might be hearing in the media. |
guddsid:Stop being lazy. You can either start with the article and disprove it with Google and US patent office website, or you can start here: http://www.republicreport.com/intellectual-fraud-crisis-allegedly-rocks-%E2%80%9Cphilip-emeagwali-myths%E2%80%9D%E2%80%94reports/ http://magazine.biafranigeriaworld.com/cezeilo/2003nov09.html (for those who see tribe in everything) http://www.rense.com/general81/dnt.htm (people have know of the fraud for at least a decade) http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0DXK/is_22_16/ai_58614840/ (He has no PhD) |
Na wa for my people: we post on Nairaland all day, condemning corrupt politicians and fraud. Until it turns out to be someone we admire, or a kinsman, then we turn the other way. And we wonder why everything is corrupt and nothing works? All the people who still rever Emeagwali, you can do the same thing I did when I first heard about this. Emeagwali was an inspiration and I was incensed that someone would drag this affable, brilliant man's name in the mud. Use google to do some research on his claims. Like me, your anger at the poster will turn to confusion and dread, to anger at Emeagwali. Carlosein:There is nothing special about this: there is a phrase in academic circles about "Doctors without PhDs". The scam is popular with failed doctoral students who take on title of Doctor anyways. You can usually get away with it too ad few people vet such things. |
Kobojunkie:Buhari cannot "magically" do anything about the PDP, even if he wins. Its a democracy, remember? They will still be there, and the machinery will still be there. The only way PDP gets defeated is to lose gubernatorially state by state so they can't swing state votes. You do know that state votes are what counts right? It is obvious to any honest observer that there is a huge schism between the sitting PDP president and PDP machinery. Never before has the sitting PDP president, eligible to run, been unable to convince a core of PDP of his candidacy. If you disagree, do raise concrete facts on what you think Buhari could possibly do |
Buhari the civilian president does not have the power of Buhari the military president. Strong-head doesn't buy you anything in a democracy. It just means you never accomplish anything, and remain bogged down in dog fights. Witness how Buhari's strong head led to his quitting the ANPP. His fortunes as a president will be much worse. It is high time we develop some moral backbone: if you overthrew an elected govt, you have no moral right to be running for elections. WE DONT NEED BUHARI TO COUNTER PDP. PDP will self-implode, regardless of who they end up choosing as a candidate. PDP has already lost several strong hold states for good. Some of you Buhari supporters, especially Southerners need to do yourselves a favor and hit Nigerian history books. Fela was right on the money, as was Soyinka. Say no to soja in abgada. Say no to "Animal in human skin" (Fela) Say no to mad men mis-diagnosed as strong headed. |
aksat:I have to humbly disagree. Instead, re-invent the wheel. Find a problem that has already been solved, and re-solve it your own way. Wether succeed at this or not, you will gain unique insights. Keep doing this and an idea will drop in your lap when you aren't expecting it. "Experts" declared that the search engine business was dead and could not be improved upon. Google re-invented search and whopped Yahoo and Microsoft. |
Aloy+Emeka:Jesus is God, and he has made an exception for this case. 6 demons have been reserved for this man's ultimate, eternal torture. |
Aloy+Emeka:Jesus refuses to forgive in this case |
kola oloye:if you figure that one out, pls pm me ![]() |
