i think your region also matters, in some places you get relatively good service, in some others absolute crap |
it seems my last post was blocked again; anyway i haven't posted too many entries in NL of recent so finding my last post shouldn't be too hard |
what i was saying is that you can either change the boot order everytime you boot (if you want to boot from the slave) or you can configure grub so that you can boot into both disks; i was giving an example of how grub could look; for instance if os 1 is on partition1 of primary master and os 2 is windows on partition 1 on slave and os 3 is on partision 2 on slave you could have an entry like this: title os1 root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 initrd /boot/initrd.gz boot title os2 root (hd1,0) #map (hd1,0) (hd0,0) #usually not necessary but may be needed by some older versions of grub chainloader +1 boot title os3 root (hd1,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sdb1 initrd /boot/initrd.gz boot |
yep will work my desktop is on 3 drives and the only reason i didn't add a 4th is because i didn't have a power slot for one more; there are 2 ways to go about booting: 1) decide that each drive's boot manager handles the oses on it in which case every time you want to boot fromthe drive that doesn't have the boot priority you manually select the disk you want to boot from (the key to press varies from mobo to mobo) or, you could just put your entries in grub; bear in mind that while in linux sda1 is the first partition of the primary master, in grub (hd0,0) if the first partition of the disk you are booting from; what am i saying? if i'm booting from the first partition of a primary disk, grub's root entry is (hd0,0) and linux's is sda1 while if i'm booting from the first partition of a primary disk, grub's root entry is (hd0,0) and linux's is sdb1 likewise booting the primary disk first partition from the slave disk, grub's entry is (hd1,0) while linux's is still sda1; ubuntu usually uses uuid instead so you shouldn't have much of an issue since that seldom changes but if you are adding the entry manually i'm sure you don't want to start typing root=UUID=abxxxxxnnn, by i'm talking about the following entry: root (hd0,0) (grub root) kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 (linux root) |
yeah i know that but there's a place in the preferences menu where you can change proxy settings anyway but i guess you're right; when i compare 8.04 to 9.04 the difference is clear the speed, the appearance , but for me 9.10 is too late now 10.04 comes out in April, i'll get that instead |
@4llerbe, u've used 9.04 and 9.10; in terms of features, which one do you prefer? (i'm still on my faithful 9.04) |
@ dwind sorry for the delay in getting back to you, problem is unless i'm free i generally dont give solution on NL in the day time and i was quite busy today; i've tried to look into your issue unfortunately it isn't something that would be easy to do; are you saying that your pc was not always showing a different language and that it was only after you pressed f1/f2 that it started showing the strange language? are the characters like chines/japanese/hebrew or are they like spanish/german/ french? if the pc was always showing a strange language i doubt that we'll be able to help (actually there are methods that could work - like flashing your bios- but they are not methods i would try even for myself) you could try resetting your bios (though i'm not sure that will change anything but it's worth a try) you can check this link to see how: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-52235 on the other hand if the words are readable (i.e. not like chinese/arabic/russian/arabic etc, ) you could try posting a screen by screen menu of what you see, someone may actually be able to help you; otherwise take to a techician to fix for you |
@dwind ibm what? what is the model number? |
@Dwind, i will assume that this is your first time posting in this thread, however you should be aware that it is customary that when posting issues you give us details of the type of computer you are using (this is not a mac forum where all hardware is made by one vendor). The reason why we ask this is because different pc vendors have different ways of implementing things on their machines for instance some pcs use f2 to access bios, some f10 etc and so on. Basicaly we need this information to be able to help you |
1stknight:wow that doesn't sound good, i just hope your problem is not hardware related; this your bootable cd, does it boot on another pc? (bear with me i'm trying to confirm that your issues is not hardware related; even if you were somehow able to format your laptop, how would you reinstall windows if your pc refuses to boot from cd) alternatively if you know someone with an external cd drive perhaps you can test and see if you can boot from that -- after you've confirmed that the cd can actually be booted from |
@1st knight what do you mean nothing happened? do you mean you out in the cd and the pc didn't start or you put in the cd and windows still booted? go to your bios and make sure that your pc is configured to boot from cdrom before hard disk |
@mojojojo do you honestly think that man will make the necessary changes when due? contrary to popular opinion i knew that we couldn't win that nations cup in fact i wasn't surprised that we lost our first match (even though i was surprised we were spanked that badly) and in the world cup we are meeting teams with players as good or better that ours; forget fifa ranking, we'll probably be under dogs at the tournament and if we are struggling with underdogs in africa, we who are supposed to be giants in africa how are we expected to perform even decently against serious teams |
Luka316:first of all mr Luka you should know that a lot of times we are very busy - which is not to say that we won't be willing to help but the fact remains that we can only help in our free time; for everyone that gives free support suggestion we are doing it out of good will. i know it seems that sometimes we may answer someone's question more quickly than yours, it's not that we are ignoring you it might just be that we have the solution to mr B's question offhand while we have to go back and try to figure out mr A's problem. i personally have seen issues which are quite simple to fix ( for me) but because i will have to explain step-by-step and at that moment i'm not using windows and can't remember the steps offhand i have to leave the solution to someone else who can explain immediately or until i finish what i'm doin and can then login to windows and treat the person's issue. that said, deji2009 asked you a question which you have not replied; (bear in mind that even a doctor cannot cure a patient if the patient is not forthcoming with answers to questions asked - especially if the patient is calling over the phone or remotely) anyway sha here's my take: start your task manager, (go to start -> run -> type taskmgr); when it comes up click on processes tab then click on cpu so that the item with the highest cpu is at the top; take a screenshot of the task manager and upload so that we can get an idea of what to do next
|
1stknight:what cd is that? have you tried to boot using an xp install cd (and format from there?) maybe the virus is also affecting your cd drive |
ow11:i beg to disagree, we do not have a team with bad players (personally i believe that we would have gone further if we'd gone without a coach - ok i'm kidding) what we have is a coach that lacks ideas; why do people keep making noise about the fact that we made 3rd place? with the exception of Algeria what other team in that we beat is ranked among the top 10 in africa? if we'd beaten cameroon in the quarter finals maybe we could say Amodu tried but as far as i'm concerned, we got as far as we did because we were lucky not to meet any of the teams in our league the same goes for our world/african nations cup qualifiers the only team we met throughout that was even close to us in ranking except Tunisia and we could only manage a draw. why couldn't the man have arranged friendlies with teams that were known to have actually won nations cups? then if we win we say we have a good record abeg the guy has nothing to offer our senior team joo, they should drop him like a hot potato |
abeg even the fact that the players were not fit is an indictment on the coach; when there were lots of fit and goal hungry players to choose from, why did he insist on taking CLEARLY unfit players? and the worst part is he never took responsibility for the boys not playing to expectation; it was always everyone's fault but his; that in my opinion is gross irresposibility; at least Siasia who complained that his boys didn't play according to instruction at the last u-21 had the grace to apologise to the fans and to assume responsibility for the team's failure |
the guy should go joo, 1. The guy lacks imagination 2. He's afraid to try out new players 3. He doesn't know how to adapt 4. His game is too predictable i'm sure at the beginning og the 3rd place he didn't care and just told the players to do whatever they wanted; it was when he saw that we were leading that he decided to take a hand and we saw the almost disastrous outcome of his lousy substitutions. besides anyone who will be owed a lot of money by people he's working for and not complain can't be someone with much to offer; i'm sure we could have come home with a better result if we had gone without a coach Until we played Algeria, all the matches we won were against teams that were definitely not in our league. Mozambique qualified us for the world cup not Amodu He's done nothing to develop our junior teams or local league (he hasn't discovered any new players) |
still the same suse 11.2; at least with puppy you don't have to update, besides you can always do a frugal install so you don't have to worry about messing up your partition; i have this 4gb flash drive, was able to install mepis in a way that it's bootable; added the necessary puppy files and updated the grub entry and i can also boot puppy live - so convenient |
no mind me o, my starcomms 100hrs finished before the month was over and i decided to wait till the new month before renewing; i normally dont' autoupdate until im ready most of the time but opensuse vexed me yesterday; imagine before i could even install a single application (i wanted to install xmms , you know how these linux distros don't support mp3s out of the box) i had to install well over 500mb of updates; they might as well have just told me to download another iso; very annoying and the program i wanted to install still wasn't installed either, sheesh! |
virtualization? my first question would be what's your pc spec like? if you have less thatn 1gb ram not a good idea; less than 512 mb forget it; also the speed of the cpu matters; barring that i think linux generally does well in virtualbox; ubuntu's quite impressive; not so impressed with opensuse though, a little too slow for my liking. seriously tho i don't get what ur issue is with partitioning, i thing gparted works just fine; of recent i got a netbook, comes preinstalled with xp, since then i've added quite a number of linux distros - oh and bsd too; i use grub4dos as my boot manager so i don't have to touch the mbr, its quite simple really; besides if like me you like to keep your music files on a separate partition of their own u should note that accessing the physical disk from inside a vm, while possible is not recommended. (actually i do it all the time, how else do you expect me to install an os on a physical partition without a cdrom drive) however i have never installed windows in a virtual machine though |
mr hooged, have you tried using an external keyboard? can people with issues please make their requests in plain clear english? sometimes reading these abbreviated words is a pain to the eyes, at least for me; a lot of times it takes me as much time or more to figure out what some poster is saying as it does to think up possible solutions; i'm sure skydance feels the same way too. |
dis man go and buy original cds, since most of your cds are legally licensed i gues it wouldn't be a big deal for you to get originals for the remaining 20%; we're talking abt office right? if u don't have money the get openoffice.org which is free |
yep ur machine is definitely infected; get one of the antiviruses recommended by deji_2009 in his last post snd update and scan ur machine |
of recent, i've been trying my hand out on BSD (freebsd and netbsd) and believe me, anyone who thinks linux is hard should just take a small peek; enough wahala and not enough help yet they claim they're more secure, work more seamlessly etc; i still haven't been able to get an internet connection on freebsd my advice. if you don't like command line stay away from bsd like a plague - i tried opensolaris too but i find the partition naming scheme too confusing (let me understand bsd first) |
@mendax, tell you what, paste your /boot/grub/menu.lst file here and we can make modifications for you which you can then update back |
@mat6 warning, that will only work on vista and win7, it won't work on xp or better still, if you have (or can get) partition magic, it allows you to resize partitions; some linux livecds also allow you e.g. ubuntu livecd comes with a program called gparted which will allow you to resize your partitions without losing data; another option is to change the way you arrange your files; instead of putting your pictures and music files in your "my documents folder" you can create another folder in drive d: or e: and put a shortcut to it on your desktop and move those file there; so that only your system files reside on drive c: |
@yourmour yes we need too know the error message @cyprainn your download was probably not complete, re-download again and chec the file size, make sure it's the same as what is shown on the download page |
actually autorun, inf is not a virus ok let me try to explain but it might take a while: when you insert your removable device and some program starts running automatically it as a result of autorun, inf; when a pc has autorun enabled (which windows has by default), everytime a removable device is inserted the system looks for the autorun.inf file that contains some instruction that should be run automatically. Even in your cds like your windows installation cd there is an autorun.inf there, that is why you pop in your cd and the installer starts running automatically without you even clicking on the icon now there are some malware that spread by putting an entry in autorun.inf and copying to writable removable media - particularly flash drives, so that once the flash drive is inserted into a pc with autorun enabled the pc automatically runs the file and the instruction in the file get executed so if autorun.inf keeps getting copied odds that your pc is infected but the problem is not the autorun, rather it's some program already running that keeps writing the file to the flash drive; advice: get a good and up to date antivirus and scan your pc |
what deji2009 meant was: what do u mean by you can't update? is there an error message when you try to update or install antivirus? or is it that you don't know how to go about doing it |
i have but as per the mailing stuff, i don't know when last i mailed anything to anyone; maybe next time you're in lagos u cld let us know; on the other hand you could go to shipit.ubuntu.com and register and request a cd; they(ubuntu)'ll send you a copy for free |
when the pcsuite says coneected that means your phone is connected to the pc, that does not mean you are connected to the internet, on one of the pcsuite options you should see an option to connect to the internet |
oh the network status icon; ok so the phone connects to the pc, then you dial from the pc? does it just say your phone is connected or your your internet connection is active |
