ade9ja:he said sony erricson glo network, it has to be gsm; unfortunately i don't use glo so i can't help here |
I spoke to some technicians in Barking, and was told to switch the lappie on and wait for around 30 minutes that it would fully come on but then i discovered the second one was doing the same thing sometimes, i dunno, maybe it is some manufacturing hiccup because both were purchased at the same time and started mucking up two months after the warranty expired
wow, looks like they set u up anyway if u know a techie you can trust give him/her to look them over for you |
vishnu2:you need an antivirus i don't trust windows defender and you need to update your antivirus regularly too. the fact that you haven't seen any slow down does not mean your pc is not already infected and i dont know how often windows defender updates |
mufikings:upgrading to 2gb will not harm ur pc in fact you have been running below capacity before this so by all means do upgrade, in fact if possible you might make it 3gb - unless your motherboard does not support that but i don't see that happening since it came preinstalled with vista
The other one refuses to switch on and when it does, all i get is this white screen with a vertical line forming in the side, like it is trying to load
i suspect the problem may be with the laptop screen, do you have a desktop pc too, if so one thing you could do is connect the monitor to the laptop and put the laptop on again (you might want to get a friend with some technical knowhow to do it for you). If the monitor shows properly then the problem is with your laptop screen; either way you'll probably have to take it to a pc technician to fix |
whiteroses:i notice that your apple computer was manufactured by HP, there's an HP service center in VI, perhaps they can help you fix it, on the other hand you can just remove the apple and eat it i'm sure the machine will still work abariko1:why do you want to use Bluesoliel? i once tried it and it caused me lots of problems; my advice if you are based in lagos buy a usb bluetooth dongle in pc villa; buy one that doesn't come with an installation disc that way you are sure that windows will support it out of the box. As for conecting to the internet, go to the nokia site and download the latest version of nokia pcsuite for your phone and install; the recent versions of pcsuite even recognise Mtn Nigeria, Glo and Zain (i don't know about Etisalat though). After setting up if you still have problems let us know |
will talk abt the java stuff later, but on my pc i have a fat partition where i put all my music in fact another where i have backups of my installer files (linux) another for the windows backups in short i almost don't keep any non-system files on my my os partition or at least i back them up on another partition so that if i lose all my data i'm still cool ands i can share them across oses |
windows too will, my win 7 is actually installed in an logical partition; by default linux supports fat with the vfat driver, the ntfs driver that comes with the linux kernel on the other hand has only safe read access; however there's another driver ntfs-3g which is based on fuse (file in user space) which allows ntfs write and most linux distros have it, puppy definitely does, and so does ubuntu; If you decide to edit /etc/fstab make sure the driver you use is ntfs-3g and not ntfs unless you are sure you'll never want to write on your ntfs partition |
there was even this stupid thing that they would do in the newspapers where they would tell customers to go online for more details so u can imagine, after paying N150 for a news paper i will now go online to get the rest of the story, the only problem is that i have to be subscribed to be able to see those details - pure 419 if you ask me |
@4llerbe, just in case you don't know the thing about dos type partitions is that you can have only 4 primary partitions however one and only one of those primary partitions can be an extended partition. now while technically you can have up to 40 (i think) logical partitions wich are created in the extended partition, if your hard disk is sata or of linux sees all your partitions as /dev/sd* (i.e. /dev/sda1, dev/sda2 , /dev/sdb1/ , ) you can have only 15 logical partitions in an extended partition; the reason has something to do with the fact that the sata driver does (or at least used to do ) scsi emulation and apparently u could only have 15 scsi disks on one port (i think again) anyway if you're sure you'll not need more than 4 partitions you can make all of them just primary partitions, however if you think you may need more in the future then make it 3 primary and 1 extended partition and you can then make as many logical partitions as you think you'll need in that extended partition |
4 ways to increase your computer speed: - increase your ram - upgrade your processor - upgrade your motherboard - overclock your processor (don't try this if you don't know what you're doing) to increase computer performance on the other hand check the link posted by kenny, i'm sure some other suggestions can be made by others |
2 ides and 1 sata, would have added another ide but i don't have another power "slot" on my power pack 1.5gb is usually not too small for me , i only run 1 os at a time virtual machines are so slow so i seldom use them, most time my ram usage is under 1gb anyway (i just like seeing all that free ram) i think my biggest bottleneck is actually my processor, problem is the only way to upgrade is to buy a new mobo; it's even hard to get a pci or avg graphics card in pc villa now, everything is pci express not to talk of a processor; and buying a new mobo is not a priority at the moment |
@deji u know for a minute i thought you said 7.3gb ram on your laptop i wan shout will have to take time to count how many oses i have on my pc celeron 2.8ghz, 1.5gb ram, 3 hard disks making a total of 360gb win xp, win7, freebsd,Opensolaris and up to 7 or more brands of linux |
@deji i guess u must be a patient pc user for me o with any os more recent than xp ram < 1gb is not acceptable in fact even xp is just barely manageable at 1gb @poster i suspect the problem may either be because of some program(s) hoggin the memory then again, how long have u been using the pc and how long ago did you start noticing that it was slow? |
u see God don catch u now, if to say u don share di knowledge now for nl at least u 4 just review the posts find the solution |
let me not say anything before they decide to block my posts too; i think if they are going to blacklist someone it will be nice if they at least leat the person know why he/she is being blacklisted |
@passworded actually i think it's the way u downloaded not the download size that's the reason why they blocked ur account after all i did download windows 7 ~2.4gb, only God knows how many linux images i have downloaded but i use regular downloads or download accelerators not torrent clients and i think that makes all the difference; |
just go to the nokia site; try dis link: http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/nokia-suites-for-your-pc |
i can tell u one thing they DON"T do on face book: face their books |
movies i download movies regularly, however i don't use torrents - at least not in windows |
@vicsty na wa 4 u o, format system because of one error message; chei!!! |
ah and i thought all the gsm operators had better service than starcomms; well me i'm not complaining abt my service sha but i know what u ,mean about the eyecandy i don't particularly like jwm and rox |
just downloaded lighthouse linux which is actually customised puppy linux; personally i feel puppy is not as fully featured as it used to be even tho i cld always add those features i wanted, anyway i have put it on my company laptop as a frugal install, ok it's quite large and all but even without the extra addons i still prepare it to the default puppy, by default it comes with 3 window managers jwm, icewm and lxde and 2 file managers rox and pcmanfm; i think this is the puppy 4 me sha
|
don't intend to get ubuntu 9.10, will wait till 10.x - especially since they refused to send me a cd, saying i had ordered many previously but |
you can try repairing windows from the installation cd |
bluetooth? never tried it on puppy; sound: are you sure u have only 1 soundcard on that pc? i only have that type of problem with multiple soundcards |
@4llerbe what command do you use when you want to install to mbr? assuming winxp is /dev/sda1 and puppy in /dev/sda2 what i would recommend is that when in grub (i.e in a terminal type grub then) type root (hd0,1) setup (hd0,1) this should install grub in the mbr of your puppy partition copy the menu.lst file to a partition that is recognisable by windows (just in case you can't boot back into puppy) then you can go to this site: http://sourceforge.net/projects/grub4dos and get grub4dos (you may read my previous post to get some info on configuring it if you feel it's necessary) |
@lynx grub1 is actually grub version 0.x while grub2 is grub version 1.x @4llerbe let me see, when i did it on my office lappy i used grub4dos; what you could do is install grub on a flash drive for your frugal install - just to get the menu.lst config, then put grub4dos on your system; for instance on lappy this is what i did copied the files grldr, gldr.mbr (i think only one is actually necessary but just to be on the safe side), menu.lst (in fact you can use the one in your flash drive) and grub.exe to my drive c: after that i added an entry to boot.ini (system properties -> advanced -> startup and recovery settings -> system startup edit) in my entry i added the line c:\grldr="Grub" (i could have used "puppy" but i had more than 1 linux distro that i was using in a "frugal" install manner); close and you should see the entry when you startup your pc. if it doesn't boot try changing the line to c:\grldr.mbr="Grub" note: this should work with winxp or 2000; with vista or 7 i can't guarantee; if you are using either and having problem you might have to google it up as for running from ram, you should look at the boot options that come up when u first startup i can't remember what option is used to not load into ram by default maybe "puppy pfix=noram" or something like that but when the Puppy boot menu (not grub o) comes up press f2 to see the list of options |
o boy e be like say na everybody get some yawa shal i made the mistake of doing some upgrades on arch linux, something went wrong; eventuall i reinstalled the os but till now am still hab\ving issues. have dropped it 4 now and am working from debian but that doesn't seem to have grub2 men i'm tired you say when you run aslamixer you can see the mixer and it's not muted perhaps you can paste a screenshot of alsamixer, also outputof lscpi; 4llebe no vex i tire small, maybe if you post those i will be able to figure out what is wrong @etaurus what exactly are you trying to do? do you have ubuntu installed and are trying to install windows or vice versa or what? |
@depilot by best do u mean worst? |
@borat no mind dem jare, shameless old boys, can't even beat children over 5 yrs their junior |
4llerbe i thot this was ubuntu linux section - not the jokes section; u shld just have left it not frugal, by default even on a full installation it still runs in ram - unless u specify otherwise when booting; besides how much ram are u even trying to save by the time u have all ur puppy programs running, you're probably still using under 1 gb - unless you also decide to run a virtual machine or some other heavy application in puppy; i remember the time i deleted my windows partition years ago, i think i was trying to install ubuntu5 or maybe ubuntu6l then i was used to creating my partitions, formatting them then specifying which partition i wanted linux installed on but no, ubuntu still insisted on checking them for errors and i wasnt comfortable with the message it was givin me (i actually had a terminal session running at the same time) then i wanted to time mke2fs /dev/hda9 which would have put a linux filsystem in the artition i wanted, insted i went to type /dev/hdb9 whic was my windows partition; men i vex big time fortunately even in windows don't keep my user files in my installation partition but it was very annoying |
