ComputersRe: Unable To Download On My Computer by blackweaver(m): 2:43pm On Jan 03, 2010
@oyb well the error message is "My computers says "THIS INSTALLATION PACKAGE COULD NOT BE OPENED. CONTACT THE APPLICATION VENDOR TO VERIFY THAT THIS IS A VALID WINDOWS INSTALLER PACKAGE."
so i doubt it would be an extension issue, i still maintain it's an incomplete download issue
what i would say is to compare the size of the downloaded file to the size specified on the download page
(unless the filesystem is corrupt in which case do a disk check - but i've never heard of windows copying a file to a corrupt part of a filesystem)
ComputersRe: Post Your Computer (PC) Troubles Here. by blackweaver(m): 10:47pm On Jan 02, 2010
wow sorry to hear that; do you have any other user account? if so can u logon with that?
if not then it's probably a system wide problem; i'm not sure i can figure that out
ComputersRe: Unable To Download On My Computer by blackweaver(m): 10:21pm On Jan 02, 2010
what browser do/did you use to download? if it's not i.e. then there's a good possibility that the download was not complete
(i.e. downloads into a temp file till the download is complete and then copies the file into the location) specified
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 10:15pm On Jan 02, 2010
@fasho16 tell us what you have done so far; i'm sure there problem's not with the kernel
i believe i used to use an ets2558 a while ago and it was with an older kernel too
ComputersRe: Post Your Computer (PC) Troubles Here. by blackweaver(m): 10:12pm On Jan 02, 2010
@bijelee that sopunds like the sort of thing i could do on someone's pc just for laughs;
it seems that on logon something is causing your windows to logoff again; unfortunately i am not sure of what exactly
when windows is starting press f8 to go into safe mode and see if you can log in from there;
if so the easiest way will be to create a new user with the same privileges as your present, copy all your files (in my documents and desktop) into the new user's documents and delete the old user (not the most efficient but it'll probably save a lot of back and forth)
another way will be to go thru msconfig and disable most of the programs that start automatically (unfortunately i'm not typing
from windows so i can't tell you which tab to look at) or if you're techie enough you could go through regedit
ComputersRe: My Computer Is Running Slow What Steps Can I Do To Fix It? by blackweaver(m): 10:01pm On Jan 02, 2010
START task manager; if any program is running on over 50% most of the time then that program is probably dragging yourr system down
ComputersRe: I Nid Pc Suite by blackweaver(m): 11:56pm On Jan 01, 2010

ComputersRe: *~ Dual Core Voted Best Computers/Internet Poster Of The Year*~ by blackweaver(m): 11:41pm On Jan 01, 2010

ComputersRe: *~ Dual Core Voted Best Computers/Internet Poster Of The Year*~ by blackweaver(m): 4:14pm On Dec 31, 2009
no dual core, i don't believe you, 4llerbuntu will never buy pirated copies of win7
(though he may ask lynxnoon so send him a copy of the one he downloaded from pirate bay grin)
ComputersRe: Intel Processor Or AMD Processor by blackweaver(m): 2:29pm On Dec 31, 2009
while i don't have an amd processor i think i'll actually go with amd; all the pcs i've used in recent times are intel
however soemtimes i've had reason to test os images (linux, bsd, opensolaris, even windows) as virtual machines; also if you are
running windows 7 and want to run xp mode, you will need a virtualization enabled cpu. now the thing is that most
intel processors don't have hardware virtualization meanwhile most - if not all - amd processors made in the last 2
years do. this means that running these guest oses on a virtualization enabled processor will be faster; while xp mode
of win7 only works on a virtualization enabled processor;
ComputersRe: *~ Dual Core Voted Best Computers/Internet Poster Of The Year*~ by blackweaver(m): 2:12pm On Dec 31, 2009
who was the nice person that suggested putting my name as a potential internet poster of the year hah!
i wasn't even online throughout the period of the poll; well it's good to see that the best person won
ComputersRe: I Nid Pc Suite by blackweaver(m): 2:06pm On Dec 31, 2009
what's it recognising your phone as?
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 1:14pm On Dec 18, 2009
boot without pluggin the harddrive then afterwards plug it in then after maybe 30 secs type:
tail -n 20 /var/log/messages and let us know the output (i'm not sure but u might need root access
to see the contents of that file)
ComputersRe: Post Your Computer (PC) Troubles Here. by blackweaver(m): 4:16pm On Dec 16, 2009
tell us, how do you try to format your hard disk? is it when you are running windows or from the installation cd
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 3:41pm On Dec 16, 2009
you can install the package that will allow the .deb installation
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 10:57am On Dec 16, 2009
well u can use the kde apps without actually using kde; u get the benefit of a light
window manager and access to kde apps; amarok is my favorite audio player
not only does it have a nice music library but i can also use it to batch rename
my music files, something i haven't seen on any other music player since
musicmatch in windows (i have a format for naming my music files)

ComputersRe: Post Your Computer (PC) Troubles Here. by blackweaver(m): 10:47am On Dec 16, 2009
Sweetdoct247:
yea I started the lapi in safe mode and it works perfectly well even with the battery in place.
i suspect ur battery driver is corrupt
in safe mode start your device manager (start -> run type devmgmt.msc)
under batteries uninstall the battery driver (the entry that shows battery)
then restart in normal mode (windows should reinstall your driver for you), let's know if your problem is fixed
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:26pm On Dec 14, 2009
nah haven't tried any, u guys are probably more familiar with wine than i am anyway
as for the sfs files i don't know what's wrong with puppy but u're going to have to put it in the outer directory,
very annoying, one would think all your files would be in one folder
ComputersRe: Do Nigerians Download Large Files by blackweaver(m): 12:07am On Dec 14, 2009
@poster do ur downloads after 12; even then it may take u 5-6 days to finish downloading, it took me over 2 days to download win7rc
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 10:24pm On Dec 13, 2009
by default if you type su without the usename linux assumes it's root you're tryng to su as root
so "su root" will work but so will "su"

to be able to use the sudo command you have to edit the sudoers file and give your user access, the command to do that is visudo
warning: you probably have to be a bit familiar with vi to use this command, i know how many times i had
problems before i finally got an idea on how to handle it; anyway you cn read more on it off the web sha
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 12:09am On Dec 13, 2009
i generally prefer kde 3.5, response time is less; mepis has it's own repository but yes it's based on debian
8.04 is long term support, they'll be supporting longer than 9.04
mandriva's rpm based updating of packages might not be as fast but hardware detection is crazy, that was the first linux
distro that i didn't have to configure my modem
Science/TechnologyRe: Urine Powered Hydrogen Fuelled Cars At Last by blackweaver(m): 4:33pm On Dec 11, 2009

ComputersRe: Windows 7 Breaks All Sales Records by blackweaver(m): 4:06pm On Dec 11, 2009
@4llerbe e be lyk say u dey look 4 fight here o, i no dey do o

anyway my take: like some people have rightly said most people who buy win7 in naija
either buy a pc bundled with it or buy a pirated copy (most i said) i'm guilty too i admit, poewerdvd
i have win7 candidate release on my pc; buy an original version of win7? i'm not sure i will unless it's
bundled with a pc. i admit it's very popular but i can't help wondering how many of the sales are
not in the course of buying hardware; ive read a number of forums where people complained about the price
i don't even want to know how much it costs in naira
personally i think vista contributed to 7's success -  if ms had come out with 7 without first releasing vista, it
would have faced as much opposition i believe; i think by the time 7 came out pple were resigned to the fact
that ms was doin away with xp but the bad rep dat 7 wld hav gotten had already been piled on vista
(i have seen softare that worked on xp n vista but refused to work on 7) besides by the time 7 came out
a lot of the vista issues had already been dealt with, so these fixes were also incorporated into 7
Science/TechnologyRe: I Need Plug And Play Bluetooth For Laptop: How Much? by blackweaver(m): 3:23pm On Dec 11, 2009
you can buy usb bluetooth in otigba 4 less than 1k, my advice, pick one that doesn't come
with an installation cd, that way u're sure windows supports it out of the box
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 3:21pm On Dec 11, 2009
lighthouse abi? ok
i usually buy the large pack of cds and i buy cases with them - and i have a partition where i keep my isos
in fact on more than one occasion i have used a virtual machine to install on my harddisk directly
from iso - though it can be very slow, especially using a distro like opensuse, i still have beef for kde4
by all means call, u still have my number right?
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 3:04pm On Dec 11, 2009
mint, puppy4; i don't remember if i had got opensuse for u too;
the first -and last time i tried kubuntu i didn't like it much either even though i generally prefer kde to gnome
if u want i cld also dash u my mandriva (i have a problem with ditros that automatically mount all my partitions, all 20+ of them - puppy does too but i'm not afraid of working on it - even if it means breaking it after all i can just delete my save file and start again)

no mind oyb, he's oppressing us with his terabyte harddisk
ComputersRe: Facebook New Change May Be Out To Expose More Of Your Privacy by blackweaver(m): 10:49am On Dec 11, 2009
yeah i last time i logged on to fb i was asked to change some settings and when i went i found
out that the recommended settings were not to my liking; i propmtly changed it back to my
previous settings
ComputersRe: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 10:47am On Dec 11, 2009
wow oyb i love ur setup, what is your total disk capacity?

mr 4llerbe if u're in lagos, just call me i think i still have those cd i burnt 4 u that u didn't come to collect,
we can arrange to meet somewhere, of course most of them are last year; as for jaunty i can only lend u the cd
since it's an original (by the way i thot u said you were sent karmic)

as for your X problem, i think there's log file i think /var/log/xorg.log or something like that, if u can't find try locate xorg.log
then use tail <xorg.log path> that should give u an idea of what is wrong
