jediknight; you know how to insert and remove modules don't you? anyway try "sudo rmmod usbserial" then "sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x05c6 product=0x6000" then "sudo modprobe option" then try "dmesg | grep tty" you should get a message like ttyUSB0 , and that means your modem has been detected if not pls paste the output of "dmesg | tail" again |
what happens if you run the app with the sudo command? |
modprobe is how you load drivers; the only problem is that you have to know which driver you want to load which is why i asked about lspci and the config id in windows |
microsoft windows, you said you knew your way around it |
ok in windows go to device properties (start -> run -> type devmgmt.msc) select the properties for the sound device (ps NOT the one that says codecs) select properties , click on the details tab and paste the value shown should be something like: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0862&SUBSYS_1462725A&REV_1000\4&1952BAB1&0&0301 |
jedi, can you paste the result of "sudo lsusb" |
Perhaps Simbob has used it to browse somewhere else where they configured proxy for her |
4llerbe, are you running ubuntu inside a virtual machine? |
but that's sort of strange; firefox doesn't enable proxy by default |
firefox can be got from mozilla.com as for messenger. unfortunately i don't use it but you should be able to get it from the yahoo site |
mrInfo what isp are you using? and isn't tha win7? |
@jediknight if it's a composite device then your pc's probably seeing it as a cdrom try ejecting the cdrom device that's what i do sometimes with my ovation usb modem probably /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1 (though i think sr0 will eject your existing cd/dvd drive) unless you have more than one cd/dvd drive in which it might be /dev/sr2 (the command should be eject /dev/sr1) just try "dmesg | grep /dev/sr" to find the devices that are listed (oh and just for the record, i'm more of linux savvy; most of the tricks i know i learnt from using less user friendly distros) @4llerbe what happens if you type "alsamixer"? if all is well you should see a command-line mixer and you can use that to adjust your sound volume; use "?" to see a list of options available in fact in retrospect if you did not have a working soundcard your music player would have complained |
ok try sudo lsmod | grep snd perhaps i will see something i missed |
if you click on start -> programs you should see free download manager; right click on the item on the menu and select send to desktop that way you will see the icon on your desktop |
do you get sound on that pc using windows? there doesn't seem to be a sound card listed |
@symbobo unfortunately i don't know to pay for Idm that's why i use alternatives besides i don;t think idm is particularly better than other download managers the one i use seems to work well for me anyway what do you mean by "it's loading was 100% completed but i couldnt get it on my desktop" do (1)you mean you downloaded fdm and cannot find where you downloaded it to or (2)you installed it and there is no link on your desktop or (3) you are using it and you downloaded a program and you can't find that program? if your answer is 1 then are you using internet explorer or firefox? |
can you post the output of lspci so we can start from there |
4llerbe you have to leave a space between ![]() more like: java -jar "/home/folabuntu/Documents/freedom-20090901-01linux/freedom.jar" (for good measure include the quotes; copy the command and paste in your terminal |
how do you know it's the cmos battery that's bad? |
ok java -jar then drag the freedom.jar file to the terminal |
glo has always been the telecoms provider with the most potential except (perhaps) for Nitel |
4llerbe you are trying to run file freedom.jar? the correct syntax is "java -jar freedom.jar" |
Gani dead? oh no i suspect foul play chei whose going to charge these crooked politicians to court now? |
another day, a rainy morning |
@4llerbe type "sudo updatedb" then "locate javac" to find the location of your java folder and then use that directory for your "ln -s , " stuff actually i see this thing as a challenge and would be disappointed if you gave up but if you want to quit, no wahala mufasa:yyou said you partitioned vista right, that means you created a free partition under vista. what Ralvy was trying to say is that you don't use the default installation configuration, instead you tell the ubuntu installer to use the free partition you created under vista |
since you can connect from linux you can try reinstalling vlc "sudo apt-get install vlc-nox" |
@muyiscoi actually when i started using linux i wasn't a programmer and i still don't write programs in linux; however you must like techy stuff if you are going to install from source - i don't like doing it much myself ok 4llerbe the simplest way to get your java running; i mentioned it before but you said it seemed too techy - you don't have to reinstall java. you said your java folder was in /usr/local. so if your java folder is jdk then your folder is /usr/local/jdk now the two most common programs you use in jdk (as far as i know anyway) are java and javac so these are the most likely programs you will use. type "sudo ln -fs /usr/local/jdk/bin/java /usr/bin/java" what this means is that you are creating a soft link (sort of like a shortcut in windows) in /usr/bin that points to the java file in your jdk directory do the same for any other java program that you are sure that you will need |
@4llerbe: ok one more thing; i need to know the hardware id of your modem in windows go to device manager (if you don't know how, go to start => run and type devmgmt.msc) under modems right click on the modem and select properties; click on the details tab you should see something like this: USB\VID_1410&PID_4100&MI_00\6&1443A696&0&0000 just copy and paste your result here; i think i will be able to figure out how to help |
internet downlod manager (idm) is not free you can get free download manager (fdm) from http://www.freedownloadmanager.org yo can also get flashget from flashget.com |
3 the internet |
