4llerbe, why don't you write one 4 linux? ![]() |
fisrt of all, what have you tried that didn't work? was there an error message when you tried? if so what was it? what version of pcsuite do you have? after i saw this message i decided to try with my phone, i use pcsuite ver 7.1.30.9 when i clicked on connect to internet, i specified the modem (i'm sure you know which modem to choose) then it prompted me for the network; apparently my version of pcsuite actually recognises zain nigeria since it saw it directly but just in case your version doesnt, use the manual configuration option, set the access point to "internet.ng.zain.com" (without quotes) i think that should be all (unfortunately i don't use zain myself) one other ting, i take it you can actually browse with that phone under normal circumstances
|
first of ll how do you connect it to your pc? secondly could we have the manufacturer and model of your visaphone modem? |
o boy 4llerbe na wa oh, next thing you'll be asking how to modify the kernel source code to work with some hardware that only came out yesterday, u just dey fly go; anyway i'm sure it's possible only i've never tried it or been interested in doin so. pity bigrovar np longer comes around, he might hav had some ideas; as it is u'll probably have to google it up, though i don't think u'll have to search for long before you find an answer to your issue (although i think the dd command might work but like i said google it up) |
what version of vlc are you using? the latest should work fine - i believe; for the technically minded, personally i don't bother downloading any software to get the youtube video i want, because i know that when you play a youtube video, it caches somewhere on your pc, in firefox i just go directly to the folder after the video has finished caching and copy and rename it to whatever i want; the path is inside: "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles" for instance if my login name is "john" then the path will be : C:\Documents and Settings\john\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles ; now inside this folder is another folder with a funny name usually ending with a .default, inside this folder is another called cache and it's inside the cache folder that the videos can be found; the only problem is that they have weird names without extensions and you may have to play them in your video player to find the one you want usually they don't start with underscore (_); i have included a screenshot so you can see the path (p.s. you won't see application data and local settings unless you enable "show hidden files and folders" in your folder options)

but was it just the contents of your home folder that you lost? how any OSes do you have on that pc? i don't know how you can recover those files but i have a suggestion that could help for the future especially if you have more than one OS on that pc: my pc is heavily partitioned; like you know i use many OSes because of this a lot of my files are on other partitions; for instance i have a partition dedicated for mp3s since i want to be able to play them from any OS; also program setup files that are downloaded are on a separate partition, that way if i do a fresh install i can get most of those programs back without going back t help for further useghto the internet -- just thought that mi |
how come nobody's saying respect? love, trust, understanding, respect; i don;t think anyone would like to stay with anyone who doesn't respect no matter how many declarations of love the person has made |
steve26:it seems you didn't read the initial article; Siasia DID admit that he failed which is more than you will hear from most other coaches, in fact i will like someone to remind me of another coach (local or foreign) that admitted to failing after losing in a tournament; i think that's one of the makings of a good leader, admitting that you messed up; yes he admitted that the boys didn't play according to plan but he didn't absolve himself of the blame and i think it's unfair to accuse him of doing so |
just wondering; how many partitions do you install ubuntu to? i.e. do you have your user home directory on another partition or everything is on one partition 'cos is seems all you lost was your user settings basically all the things in your /home/user folder; i may be wrong though; what i'm trying to say is that if that is so then it may be that your user home folder may be on another partition that is not getting mounted in which case check the /etc/fstab file and your boot messages to see if and why a partition is not being mounted (not i'm fishing here, if everything is on one partition this will not work) |
the problem is that most open source software have a problem with proprietary formats; unfortunately i've only used kde-based applications to rip to mp3 and even they didn't do that well; however have you tried soundjuicer? i googled ripping to mp3 and that was the first thing that came up and it's gnome- based too; perhaps that may work about the data lss, when did that happen? i think i missed that although that could happen if your pc suddenly went off - especially if you were copying a file - but i don't know the scope of your data loss |
i take it he has only one sound card right? sometimes i have a problem with sound but usually the problem is that i have 2 sound cards and my music player is trying to use the other soud card what about using alsamixer what do you see?, it may be that something is muted if you still have the problem you could paste the output of lspci and give us a screenshot of alsamixer at the rate u are going, you'll soon be better than us, some of the issues you've raised are on things i havent yet tried, i guess i'm either too busy or am not as challenged as i used to be |
4llerbe by now you are familiar with how these things work; when do you get this error message? which application or is it all applications etc i.e. your request is too vague |
@cwolf you know that reply i made where i said to use: title Windows fallback 1 find --set-root /ntldr chainloader /ntldr savedefault change to: title Windows fallback 1 find --set-root /Windows/system32/winload.exe chainloader /Windows/system32/winload.exe savedefault and try again, maybe it might work |
@cwolf i didn't know you had this entry already: # This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for a non-linux OS # on /dev/sda1 title Win 2000/Windows XP (loader) rootnoverify (hd0,0) savedefault makeactive chainloader +1 so are you saying it doesn't work? |
what's your output when you type ifconfig |
@4llerbe don't you use your phone as a modem? or what do u use again? how do you know you are (or seem to be using) a proxy? |
in ubuntu, type this command: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst in the file that file opens scroll down till you see : "###END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST"' then press enter twice to leave a line between then type the following: title Windows fallback 1 find --set-root /ntldr chainloader /ntldr savedefault One other thing, look for a nline that contains the word "timeout" and make sure the value displayed is greater than 0; any number from 15 - 20 is a safe value Save your file and on restart you dhould see a menu where you can select either ubuntu or windows |
1 horse was friday; ill leave 2) to another person to answer |
ok just give us a screenshot of how your taskmanager looks when it's running at 100% on the processes tab use alt+printscr not just printsc so that you just capture the taskmanager |
shakerz:ok so i take it you've been to somalia and seen the average somali chick 'cos the ones you may see in your school MAY be the exceptions; as for ethiopians, am surprised most of those long distance men i see in athletics are nothing to write home about and i have a hard time beleiving that their mothers/sisters are particularly stunning @blackspade, perhaps you could give us a link to one of those "Somali" forums |
first of all why don't we find out what is using you cpu the most? in taskmanager click on the processes tab, then click on cpu so that the list of processes is ordered by cpu usage; the process that has the highest cpu usage (apart from system idle process which is actually an indicator that your cpu is free) is probably hat is slowing it down and yes it usually tends to be the antivirus. Formatting the system without first finding why it is slowing down is not the best solution 'cos it may turn out to be a program that you usually use and if you format then install the program then you come back to where u started from in the first place |
if it's too fast maybe u can dash me some |
@Amaka you know, while you do have a point which i wholeheartedly agree with, i can't help feeling that you sound jealous (no i know it's just a feeling and i'm probably wrong but that's the message i get from the tone of your messages) @gamechange i have no argument with that but at the moment i believe the poster was talking about "Physical beauty", besides as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder i guess the girls are quite pretty but for me they are not ALL that, as gamechange was saying physical beauty is nice but i'd rather have a girl with a good attitude than the most beautiful woman in the world with a nasty atttitude |
you aren't in lagos are you? u know the time we were supposed to meet i had already prepared a mint cd for you - i guess u could have my mandriva cd too but how do we meet? that's the main issue |
@4llerbe i know what you mean; sometimes the pc engineers in our office come to me when they have issues - especially if they need drivers for a pc that they formatted, funny enough linux helped me figure out how to get drivers without going to the website of the pc manufacturer (i mean when all you see is invalid devic, you don't know if it's network or sound or , ) @4llerbe there's also the challenge: try out another distro that u've never tried, you might find out that you like it better than the previous that you have; there are some things that i would try out on archlinux or slackware that i wouldn't dare try out on say fedora cos of the wahala that would be involved and the risk that i might mess up some critical file and would then have to reinstall which would be quite annoying (i generally don't keep my files - docs, music etc in my home folder instead i have other (fat) partitions for such stuff that way i can access from both windows and all the linuces i have and a reinstall doesn't affect them - i keep a lot of partitions) |
just go for windows 7 vista's days are numbered (thank God!) |
i think it's just shameful; a lot of nigerians are 4getting their values ok since this is the jokes section i'll stop being a killjoy |
@4llerbe, school no mean anything; gates no finish school before e go start microsoft besides most of those computer schools na rubbish dem dey teach; experience is usually a more effective teacher -yours and others. None of what i've helped with in linux was learnt thru any formal training |
before or after installing vista? |
WRONG!!! and i can say it with glee i'm Yoruba - so there but we have to get past all this cultural branding thing |
That's Nigerian men for you.

that is an ibo man for you
i take exception to the above quotes i think it's just a poor man mentality plain and simple first quote is stereotyping nigerians and i say "speak for your self" second is also stereotyping ibos and tribalistic, we should start thnking beyond these stereotypes |
