@Septuagenarian i take it the version of windows you were trying to install is xp; on some earlier pcs with sata support (like the hp530) you could get round this by disabling sata native mode in the bios; however i'm not sure you can do that on the dv5 as to installing ubuntu, i dont know what version you are using but from v7 sata should be enabled by default; you shouldn't have any problem installing it at all; basically any linux distro released within the last 2 years should have sata support by default @4llerbe how far now? i never hear from you or u no need d cds anymore? |
oyb:firefox yes; win 7 till sometime next year, then the thing stops working; after giving adequate warning |
abeg no mind d guy e dey enjoy himself abi u no see as d woman chest press against im back? |
bush man, you've made your bed and now you're complaining 'cos you have to lie in it the onus is on you to make it work pay attention to your wife and for God's sake stop complaining that you don't love your wife make up your mind that you are going to love her regardless of whatever it is that turns you off; especially since she seems to be crazy about you and of course pray about it 'cos it seems to me that you have a problem |
@c.wolf, forget story; MS will still take over 85% of the market share; most of the people who will try out thee google os are adventurous guys like the linux users, not the average joe who doesn't even know what an operating system is @bigrovar how's the performance of kde 4.x? i used to hear that it was buggy (am sure by now it's much better) the only os i have that uses kde 4.x is opensuse 11 i think, but men that thing drags - ok it's MUCH better than vista but it still drags; i stil use kde3.5 on most of my kde-based distros |
nah i don't think bigrovar is pure linux, i think he's just into open source which means he'll take google's side against windows but then isn't google a "beta" software company? i mean their products are almost always released as better and seldom become stable (even though their released betas tend to be stable) |
@ 4llerbe you said: ok lets see, you buy a car, the engine doesnt work well, it doesnt have tires and u need the mechanc every other day, but u tell urself i bought a fine car!!!!!! i don't think that's a fair analogy, how many people actually complain of tthe system not working? i think a better analogy is you along live in a place like mushin where there's lots of traffic anfd the roads are not particularly wide; hitherto you've used a small japanese car; now you buy some large american car that comes with lots of bells and whistles llke you have to press some key combination everytime you want to open the door of the car and you have to enter some security code everytime you want to start the car , Now the american car is still better than the japanese car, but unless you are driving on a highway, you'll probably find driving the american car annoying; and while all those security features on the car may seem nice they could also be very annoying; personally i believe MS had to bring out something else 'cos people were already biased against vista - myself included. win 7 i like a smaller car that has all the bells and whistles but also has the option of toning down or totally disabling some of the the security requirements besides if 7 was released as is without vista being released previously i'm very sure most people would have complained about it too. Fact is 7 is more like vista than either vista or 7 is like XP, just that now we're already resigned to the fact that the vista features are here to stay @4llerbe as per the cds, i clled you once; you never contacted me back - so it's not my fault; i did decide to stay off the web for a month but now am back |
no fair Ex, you're supposed to be in the ring not on the couch |
which do i prefer between xp and vista? xp by a long mile which do i believe is better? let's be objective, vista is SIGNIFICANTLY better, however vista also requires SIGNIFICANTLY better hardware to actually perform up to spec i think xp users should stop being sentimental about this thing, lets face facts; barring compatibility issues and driver issues and hardware requirements, what thing does xp have on vista? and before anybody calls me a hypocrite i truly HATE vista and i hope to NEVER use that os at least on my personal hardware anyway but the fact still remains that it's a better software, for instance compare task managers in XP and Vista; also with vista i can actually reduce the size of my partition(s) without any third party software. I have however tried windows 7 and , at least it's not so hardware greedy as vista 7's the future of windows and am ready to fight anyone who disagrees with me |
slight modification, windows logo+m is actually "explore" my computer the difference is that you will see the side bar with a folder tree-view on a web browser F5 reload/refresh page CTRL+N new window CTRL+T new tab (for browsers that support tabbed browsing) ALT+F4 Close window CTRL+F4 Close Tab F11 - full screen (not restricted to browsers) CTRL+G go to line no (in documents) CTRL+O will also bring up the open dialog in documents |
sad but true; at least for now |
another browser i could mention is dillo; or links, there's a graphical version of links too sometimes use a command line text editor called joe; nano too's ok but always gets me lost; don't know the keystrokes |
@bigrovar, flyuche i know you guys like getting the best graphics out of your pcs you probably have state of the art hardware; unfortunately my graphics card is onboard and not particularly impressive. Anyway i'm more on the performance stuff; i like to get as much speed out of my hardware as possible. 'cos of this i generally prefer to use "barebone" oses like slackware and arch to ubuntu and co and on those oses i ALWAYS use runlevel 3 i.e always start in command line (don't really like gdm, xdm or kdm). of course i still go into X but i prefer starting from command line; i believe it's faster Now my question is this do you ever decide to use a distro that's not as graphically enhanced as those images that you've been oppressing us with and if so, which window managers do you like using? for instance i use icewm on slackware (even though i have all the other window managers too but i dislike the delay) also on arch linux(where i don't have kde or gnome or xfce) and for my file manager i use pcmanfm (but sometimes use konqueror too) i've used rox as my file manager but i don't like the fact that it doesn't have an address bar which is something i dislike aboutt gnome's file manager too (i can't even remember the name) |
512 ram? ok however there are other lightweight distros that will fly with that much (or that little depending on how you look at it) ram nd some of them also have noce guis too where do you live perhaps we can meet and i could give you some tips or some cds; i live in Ogba, work in Ikeja. unfortunately i don't have xfce but i could give you some other stuff that may run even faster |
@4llerbe which area n Ogba do you stay? i stay there too unfortunately i don't have kde on my debian-based distros (i.e debian, ubuntu, mint) however i do have kde on opensuse if you're interested yeah you'l only see commercial brands n otigba which is strange since all you have to do to get ubuntu is go to shipit.ubuntu.com, register for free and order your cd (for free too) of course tthere may be some delay in the cd getting to you but i've been ordering ubuntu at least once a year since 2005 |
just wondering, why do you want Xubuntu anyway? |
but at least if you get cholera from drinking bottled water you can sue them |
Agbalanze:i beg to disagree, distilled water CAN be 100% pure; however doctors say that it's not good to drink; perhaps you mean no NATURALLY 100% pure water; that i won't argue with emmydee:and where does the spring get it's water from? at least the particles that pollute rain water are strictly in the air; spring water is from the ground which collects it from rain that has fallen somewhere; of course if you talked about lagos rain water i have no argument with that; truth is, there are some places where rain water is purer than any other source of water and there are places where the air is so impure it can even be harmful however i'm almost sure you won't find many purer sources of rain than the one that falls in your village like all those cities where you have acid rain |
depend, most of the things in the 4cd redhat are things you'll probably never use you could try downloading some lightweight linux brands like slax or puppy linux (i know i make a lot of noise about these distro but those are the lightweight ones i've used) or damnsmalllinux (DSL) - though that's not as featured as the oother ones i mentioned; DSL's about 50-60mb, puppy about 90mb or you can get some of the older ones which aren't much larger than DSL, Slax is closer 200mb; all should work on a p3 especially if you have up to 512 mb ram and can be quite fast too yeah by the way they're all live cds which means you can use them without installing on your hard disk about Mac i know there's a project to bring the mac os to the x86 i.e your intel/amd processor pcs i.e. your pentuim/celeron/amd athlon/centrino etc however i don't know if it can actually be obtained and if so if it's free. Traditionally the mac os has been tied to hardware released by apple |
one other thing, in folder options, i usually uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" do i can see the full file extension. that way i'm less likely to click on a virus posing as a word document or picture |
funny thing trying to remove a stubborn virus in normal mode there should be some antivirus that can run in safe mode; you're more likely to clean your pc of viruses if you try to remove them in safe mode. for the person who talked about disabling autoplay i totally agree with you; in fact on my windows system one of the first things i do is to disable autoplay on all drives - find it annoying, slows down my system. i also make all files visible (pls if you don't know what you are doing don't try the last part and i won't tell you how to do that either) but for those who are familiar, i find out that it makes identifying viruses easier for me. My pc seldom gets infected |
never used vista (not really anyway) never want to (any time someone asks me to help fix a problem my statement is the same - i HATE vista) just 'cos hardware is improving doesn't mean you must use it all up i like to have 10, 15 applications running including an oracle database and a programming ide and still have up to 500mb free ram instead of having 500mb free ram after just starting the os (ok am exaggerating but vista is still a memory hog) pity MS is bent on killing xp thank God for win 7 (i hear it will be released officially this year) at least is not as much a memory hog as vista though recommended disk space for installation is 16gb |
bust vista get 7 instead (especially while it's still free - warning, not on your production server; for that use xp or vista instead) |
@Da-babe thanks for starting this thread; 'cos of you i remembered to download the latest version (candidate release); i'm definitely going to wait for it to come out before i bother buying a laptop; don't intend to have that annoying vista on any hardware of mine my only grouse is that i can't have my classic start menu |
@bigrovar picked up my ubuntu 9 a few days ago; havent' yet installed it wubi didn't work; am thinking of which os to do away with so i can; maybe ubuntu 7.10 |
t least for ubuntu you could have used the wubi installer; then if you want to get rid of it uninstall from windows; but is virtual box fast enough? i can't stand the delay that occurs when am running an os in a virtual machine |
flyuche, why are you using a virtual machine anyway? why not just create a partition for the os? |
i guess it gets to Abuja before coming to lagos (does that make sense?) i always order at least one cd a year myself |
that means mine is on the way; goody |
init4dmoni:just renew his subscription, all will be forgiven |
@flyuche also having to update antivirus every other day; also annoying that there are so many things i can't do without using the mouse; now vista has made it even worse; before with XP i could shutdown with keyboard, just press 'Win' then 'u' then 'u' again, now you have to use the mouse; in linux all it takes is the halt command (provided you have root access) |
