4llerbe you said you can't connect to the internet on linux but you can on windows right? what isp are you using? if starcomms or mtn i may be able to help |
is your download manager idm? you probably have a download manager that is trial ware and now the trial period is expired. uninstall the download manager; you can download another one later fdm (free download manager), flashget are two good totally free download managers |
@mufasa can you paste the out put you get when you type "lsusb" so we can start from there @4llerbe instead of dragging and dropping, just type vlc in the terminal by the way what do you need java for? you want to write programs? |
can you copy the last 10 lines that are displayed after you type ./configure and paste them here? |
which application are you referring to? ok i get it what i meant is that there are some java programs that you have to pass arguments (patameters) to before they can run; for instance if you want to run .jar files you'll have to use "java -jar <program>" instead of the regular "java program" on the other hand of you have no problem typing the path in full you can just type /usr/share/jdk/bin/java <program> ./configure make sudo make install are acutally 3 commands, ./configure make sudo make install or if you want to type on one line type: ./configure; make; sudo make install configure does some configuration on your system, tries to find out if requirements are met and tries to locate needed libraries. once that is done a makefile is created. then make does the actual compiling and creates the binary file make install then copies the binaries to the appropriate folders usually /usr/local/lib, /usr/local/bin etc you have to use sudo for the last set of files 'cos you are copying to system folders i recommend using the first method i.e. running the commands one after the other, just in case one should fail |
which one? gedit or env or grep? gedit is your text editor env is like set in windows, it shows your environment variables grep is like a filter ; if you just typed env, you'll see a list of strings and then you'll have to scroll to the one that you want env | grep PATH will print out only the strings on the same line with PATH as to the vlc, drag it to the terminal and press enter; what message do you get? |
@4llerbe unfortunately because of the way you installedd java i dont think a point and click will work. ok you have your jdk folder in /usr/local; so your java path is something like /usr/local/jdk mine is jdk1.5.0_16 so mine path would be something like /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_16 now in your console type: "sudo gedit /etc/bash.bashrc" your editor should come up. now add this line: "PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/jdk/bin" (without quotes) in mine this would be: PATH=$PATH:/local/jdk1.5.0_16/bin after this open a terminal window and type "env | grep PATH" you should see a list of paths separated by semicolons, including your java path to change how to open java file type right-click on the java file, select properties go to the open with tab, click on add, you can click on use custom command and type the command. howeveri must let you know that sometimes you MUST type the command in command line to install some files because you may have to pass some arguments i hope this helps have to go now |
@tbenson where do you adjust the volume? |
layi:ahem, i have an hp530 laptop the wireless card is by intel; so's the display adapter and the sound my office desktop is also and hp pc and the display is by ATI perhaps the motherboard is by hp i don't know my point is that a lot of these hardware vendors don't make as many parts as you think they make and zinox IS a hardware vendor - don't know about manufacturer |
technically yes if you're installing jdk you're supposed to install as an Ubuntu package. however all is not lost, the only thing is that you'll probably have to manually do some things that would have been automated by the installer. first of all move the java folder to another folder (like /usr/local or /usr/share or /opt) you know the command: "sudo mv <java folder> <destination >" what i did was that after that i made a soft link of the usual programs (java, javac) to my /usr/bin older i.e "sudo ln -fs /<destination folder>/<java folder>/bin/java /usr/bin/java" and "sudo ln -fs /<destination folder>/<java folder>/bin/javac /usr/bin/javac" this way you can at least run java programs from command line and also compile another way is to add the /<destination folder>/<java folder>/bin to the path; unfortunately i'm not on ubuntu right now so i can't tell you how (it varies with flavours of liunx) |
i believe intel is probably better; however you're more likely to get a cpu that supports virtualisation if you go for amd |
@lynx so you too had that problem? i posted something a few days ago - twice in fact and they are still not here @4llerbe can you run java now? i actually installed java on one of my distros just to help u with your issue; what folder is our java installed into? you can check my previous posts under my profile |
hey what happened to my post? now i'll have to go over it again; ok here goes: @4llerb, have you been able to install the java runtime? if not try this: open a console window nd type: sudo chmod +x <java installer> then sudo <java installer> where java installer is the name of your installer; you can drag the file to the console, the full path of the ile will be copied chmod will make the file executable by the way how do you connect to the internet in windows? perhaps i could be of help in configuring your pc for internet connection in linux |

on googling your error message i found a site where they had a fix for your problem; apparently it has something to do with the registry entries for xml files. Here's the link: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista-7/579581-missing-windows-help-support-vista.html by the way did you install dreamweaver? in another site that had the same fix it seems that dreamweaver was the culprit for most people with that problem |
i wish i had an answer to your issue; i don;t even know what sbs2008 is; perhaps if you explained we may have ideas that could help you make it work - that is if you haven't solved the problem yet. i guess you're a sysadmin. perhaps you could also post your current configuration so that we know where we're coming from |
tell me something first; if you use earphones or plug in external speakers do you hear any sound? if yes then you definitely have a hardware problem else the problem may or may not be hardware related. if you try to play music do you get an error or warning message? if so then your problem is probably software related. |
yes like deji was saying what type of files do you have in your drive d? can you give us details of your drives (eg drive c size: 120gb free space 10gb etc) if you're sure your drive d: is not a recovery partition or some other system partition you can move some of the files in your documents folder to drive d. also you might want to do a disk cleanup; it may be that you have a lot of temporary files that are taking up space on your drive c |
@excel26 are you sure your help/support was removed? i'm not sure it can be uninstalled that way at least not in winXP - don't know about vista though; try this: type win+f1 keys together. if your help is still installed it should come up |
@Dfash i assume that normally your laptop/pc plays movies without any problem when playing from a cd and you problem is only when you're streaming from the internet. well normally when i decide to watch a video from say youtube i also get that kind of problem (and like you i use starcomms) so this is what i do: most sites that stream video have a marker showing not only your position on the video but also the amount of the video that has been streamed to your pc (for instance in youtube shows a pink bar for the amount that has been streamed/buffered to your pc and a red bar for your location). once you start playing it starts buffering and will continue even if you pause - which is what i do and only resume whenit has gone a long way so that i don't see those annoying pauses. which is why usually once you've finished playing it to the end once the next time you try to play it does without a hitch. (if you know where you can even locate the file and copy it to another folder to play at your leisure provided you have a flash video player) P.S. there are some sites where you will "ALWAYS" start over again, sort of like live streaming. In such sites the methosd i've just mentioned won't work |
@4llerbe you might also want to do a disk checkup in command prompt type chkdsk /r, this will not only check for file errors but also for errors on the harddisk. the next time your pc starts up the disk will be checked for errors However note that this will take a while. i have noticed that a lot of people always skip the disk checkup when it comes up. personally i don't advise (especially on nt-based systems (including vista n xp) ) it 'cos while most times it doesn't matter, sometimes it does and the consequence of skipping that one time might be serious |
well cactus u got to remember that till then what we had was 9x and 2k remember those interfaces without the luna them and all? |
yep xperience it is |
@skydancer always glad to help @deji man that's a nifty trick to know |
@osasdiddy besides if the worst comes to the worst, you can always use another media player; i almost never use windows media player myself. there are lots of free music and video players that you can download |
i take it your wmp 10 was working before right? now when you installed wmp 11 were you notified that you had successfully installed it? |
@rogo you said you tested the ram with working ones; what do you mean? is it that you put ram that you know is working on the pc or you put the ram on a pc that you know is working? also what happened when that happened? did it work then? also you didn't specify: did you change your ram or your pc had been working before and all of a sudden it stopped? |
refused to show anything like how? do you mean that when you put your pc on you don't see anything at all? if so when you press caps lock on your keyboard; does the light caps light change? are you sure that your monitor is weel plugged into the cpu? |
did you upgrade or change your ram? Try reinserting your ram in your motherboard if the error still persists then either your ram or your motherboard (hopefully not) needs changing |
when exactly does the blue screen come up? before the windows startup screen (where you have the microsoft windows logo) during startup or after you have startup and are now working |
maybe you should change your antivirus; i personally use avgfree i'm sure there are other free and effective antiviruses out there |
the problem with buying the cd is that you have to know wat you are looking for; yoou are more likely bto have a cd with the drivers you need ifyou got the cd when you bought the pc else my advice is to buy a flash or get one somewhere so you can download from the internet - otherwise you might end up buying a stack of cds that are absolutey useless |
