u know glo will soon be the fastest once they start usig their glo1 line but 4 me sha i wonn't switch to them till they give at least 10gb download limit; till then i'll stick with slow (relatively) but steady (not to mention unlimited) starcomms |
what gsm network are you on and what operating system is running on ur pc? |
@4llerbe you press k to kill a process, it will ask you for the process no that you want to kill and then u enter it i could have told you that before but i felt that once you knew the help command u would be able to figure out the rest |
never had that error before so am not sure i can help u there but i thot u used a modem to connect to the internet, am not sure you should have that kind of error; after restating do you stil have it? there's a console program called top that does just that; to be able to "kill" running programs u may need to run it with root access (i.e. "sudo top" . while in top, to see programs not shown on the screen use the < (i.e shift + < and > keysto see help list type ? or h |
i really wish i could think up better ideas but i don't use messenger myself, after all yahoo has chat on its mail now that way no need for installations |
@tunde have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? |
that soumds bad, you may have to take ur laptop to be repaired, i hope u have a pc vendor that u trust; however wait for deji to give his two bits first |
@4llerbe u think u've had trouble with linux? ha don't even let me go there, at least you even downloaded a kernel upgrade; my first kernel upgrade was one i recompiled by myself - and it was a 2.2.x kernel not a 2.6.x kernel all because i was trying to get sound - and it still didn't work, eventually when i did get sound some months later i had to compile the source of the sound card driver i got - all because the kernel version i was using was too old to support my sound card; AND i didn't have nairaland to run to for help, i did some SEROIUS googling and this was when i was still very green to linux as for that iodine program, well all i'll say is that u're on ur own, i don't know how it works or what exactly it's supposed to do |
@jedi first of all to clarify things, the error: ERROR: Module usbserial does not exist in /proc/modules is not what is causing the problem; let me try to explain what i wanted you to do: in linux we have these 3 system programs lsmod, modprobe & rmmod which are the commands used for viewing loaded modules/drivers, loading modules and unloading modules respectively and you need to be root to do so (hence the sudo). anyway i first told you to unload the usbserial module in case the module was already loaded with the wrong parameters; the above erro message just meant that the module was not already loaded which is not an issue since we are going to load it with the right parameters. Anyway enough of that, i see you ran "sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x05c6 product=0x1000", however you did not run "sudo modprobe option" (which i'm sure i must have told you to run too) so load the 2 modules and try to run wvdial again if that does not work try running "sudo wvdial" i've noticed that some distros will not allow a normal user to run wvdial, though i've never seen that in ubuntu; if that still doesn't work then let me know again the output of "sudo tail /var/log/messages" and "dmesg | grep tail" |
well u have to remember that most linux "commands" are actually programs; if they are not installed they can't be used though there are many commands that will come installed by default in most linux flavors e.g ls (similar to dir in dos), lsmod & insmod& depmod (these are compulsory programs even though you don't always use them; they also have to be run as root), another example is cp, rm, mv which are copy delete and move/rename respectively. i'm sure that list of commands you got will give you a lot of info that you need on linux commands. one other program that you will almost always have (and not only on linux either) is "man" which is like some sort if help although i've found that sometimes it can be hard to understand. if you want to have an idea of the syntax or options of a certain program run "man program" (warning, sometimes you may not be able to understand the help that comes up with the man command) by the way what regular program are you trying to run that is giving you that error message? here's my output when i typed locate vtun (yes i installed the program just to be able to test it): kunle@kunle-laptop:~$ sudo locate vtun /etc/vtund.conf /etc/default/vtun /etc/init.d/vtun /etc/logrotate.d/vtun /etc/modutils/vtund /etc/modutils/vtund/vtun-mod /etc/rc0.d/K20vtun /etc/rc1.d/K20vtun /etc/rc2.d/S20vtun /etc/rc3.d/S20vtun /etc/rc4.d/S20vtun /etc/rc5.d/S20vtun /etc/rc6.d/K20vtun /usr/sbin/vtund /usr/share/doc/vtun /usr/share/doc/vtun/Credits /usr/share/doc/vtun/FAQ.gz /usr/share/doc/vtun/NEWS.Debian.gz /usr/share/doc/vtun/NEWS.gz /usr/share/doc/vtun/README.Debian /usr/share/doc/vtun/README.Encryption /usr/share/doc/vtun/README.Setup /usr/share/doc/vtun/README.Shaper /usr/share/doc/vtun/changelog.Debian.gz /usr/share/doc/vtun/changelog.gz /usr/share/doc/vtun/copyright /usr/share/doc/vtun/examples /usr/share/doc/vtun/examples/reroute /usr/share/doc/vtun/examples/vtund-client.conf /usr/share/doc/vtun/examples/vtund-server.conf /usr/share/doc/vtun/examples/vtund.conf.gz /usr/share/lintian/overrides/vtun /usr/share/man/man5/vtund.conf.5.gz /usr/share/man/man8/vtun.8.gz /usr/share/man/man8/vtund.8.gz /var/cache/apt/archives/vtun_3.0.2-1.1_i386.deb /var/lib/dpkg/info/vtun.conffiles /var/lib/dpkg/info/vtun.list /var/lib/dpkg/info/vtun.md5sums /var/lib/dpkg/info/vtun.postinst /var/lib/dpkg/info/vtun.postrm /var/lib/dpkg/info/vtun.preinst /var/lib/dpkg/info/vtun.prerm /var/log/vtund kunle@kunle-laptop:~$ iodine iodine: Run as root and you'll be happy. 4llerbe, try using "sudo apt-get install " to reinstall your programs; that might work. , as in "sudo apt-get install vtun" to reinstall vtun, etc |
@4llerbe, u don't see it then it doesn't exist besides use locate to search for the other programs you say you installed "sudo locate installed_program" where installed_program is the program or file you are looking for |
exchange memory cards; system files can't be sent via bluetooth on a 3110c believe me i've tried or at least i'm not aware of any java based app that supports that |
with all the kolo people wey dey dis world it was only a matter of time; for some people it's a challenge |
@yemupz phones too will work as well if you have problems you can post on this forum or google up the solution @lynx you too would know it if you started learning linux from a distro that came in 2 floppies because you had a 20gb harddisk that had xp installed and very little space for anything, try slackware or arch, you may find yourself learning more linux commands @4llerbe i meant "sudo locate 6tunnel" (you need root privileges to run locate; "updatedb" searches all mounted drives for all your files and stores them in another file (which is why it takes some time); "locate" prints out all occurrences of that file on the screen |
4llerbe:try "sudo updatedb" then "locate 6tunnel" |
guyz pls i need an app for formatting flash drives.
in linux? why do you need an app to do such a simple task? i'm almost sure you won't find one (but then again you may) the command to create a flash filesystem in ubuntu is "sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sdb1" (note: this is assuming you have only one harddisk if you have two it'll probably be /dev/sdc1) if you are not sure and you are afraid of making a mistake paste the output of "sudo fdisk -l " here |
4llerbe i no go lie, dat one na small wahala but it can be done sha are you sure you really want to do it? |
sorry as far as i know it's not possible, as i said before i don't know of any java - based application that will allow you to do that and as far as i know 3110c only uses java (j2me) |
well it depends on the type of phone you have; there are apps for s60v3 phones that you can use to send installer files via bluetooth; xplore is a good example; i don't know if there are any java-based programs that will allow you to do that. many phones won't even allow you to rename a file with a .jar extension |
4llerbe:nah in fact on my machine i have winxp, win7, slackware 12&13, archlinux, ubuntu 8.04, 9.04, debian, mint felicia, fedora 10, opensuse 11, mandriva, freebsd 7.1 and opensolaris all loaded with one grub bootloader jediknight:don't yet give up, what's the output from "sudo tail /var/log/messages" and "dmesg | tail" truth is as long as linux detects the modem i see no reason why you can't connect to the internet |
@danex is your ubuntu installed inside windows or is it installed in its own partition? |
pls check my previous post, it seems to have been blocked |
i mentioned download manager because sometimes the file being downloaded is not fully downloaded. if the file end with .mp3 or .avi or any music or video format this should not be a problem, at worst the file will play to the point where the download stopped, however i've found that usually the file is zipped or rarred i.e has an extension of .zip or .rar which means that you have to first extract before playing the extracted file. unfortunately you cannot extract a file that is only partly downloaded. however if you are sure that your file finished downloading i would suggest getting a different media player; i use vlc for my videos (download from videolan.org) and winamp for my audio (winamp.com) |
BIIIGROOOVAAAR welcome back, it's nice to have you around again @4llerbe, if you like the old winamp (version 2.x) you can use xmms too and it even uses the winamp2 skins (if you are into that kind of stuff), no media library though nor cd ripping. Like 4llerbe said, amarok - definitely my favorite media player on linux, i also like songbird - though installing it is not as straightforward as other media players - there is no distribution specific installer for songbird (correct me if i'm wrong Bigrovar). There's also audacious @jediknight sorry, i didn't know you would take the brackets literally i sometimes get modem not responding but it doesn't matter, it will still try to dial and if your config is correct it will still work and apparently the command was "sudo wvdialconf" not "sudo wvdialconfig" but it doesn't matter, the whole point of that command was to generate a default /etc/wvdial.conf file |

sorry 4 the delay, was actually working in windows and had to restart my pc anyway, type sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf you should see eomething like this: Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 Modem Type = Analog Modem Phone = #777 ISDN = 0 Username = 7028977699@starcomms.com Init1 = ATZ Password = 7028977699 Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0 Baud = 230400 phone number is the nuber you dial to the isp usually #777, your username is the username you use to connect; on starcomm the username is <your phone no>@starcomms.com and the password is <your phone no> modem will be /dev/ttyUSB0 (like what was shown in the result of your dmesg | tail) baud usually doesn't matter though i recommend that it be between 57600 and 460800 but usuallly it shouldn't matter. save your file and exit. now you have one more step to take type sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf this is a sample of what i have in mine: nameserver 196.3.60.5 nameserver 196.3.60.7 now this is why i said you should type ipconfig /all in windows if you did you should have at least one line for dns servers. basically you enter your dns servers in this file i.e. nameserver <dns server> one line for each. save file and exit. now type sudo wvdial (ps ordinarily you shouldn't have to use the sudo command but i;ve noticed that some linux distros won't allow the user to use wvdial) after this you should connect. you know you are connected when you have a message like: --> Using interface ppp0 --> local IP address 41.219.200.185 --> remote IP address 10.5.1.3 --> primary DNS address 196.3.60.5 --> secondary DNS address 196.3.60.7 if you still have any problems paste the output of "sudo tail /var/log/messages" ps you don't have to attach you messages as an image, just copy and paste the text the gnome terminal will allow you to do that |
@jediknight from your messages i see that your device has been detected (generic converter now attached to ttyUSB0) maybe i can help you with your wvdial config; what network are you on? if it's starcomms then we don't have a problem (since i use starcomms myself i can tell you what exactly to do) if not you will have to give me some information while using the modem in windows; (i take it your modem is working in windows right?) anyway from windows while you are connected go to the command prompt and type ipconfig /all and paste the output (the part that has the ppp connection) also i will need to know the phone number or better still if you think you can handle it yourself this is what you have to do: type sudo wvdialconfig in your terminal window , to be continued |
what browser/download manager do you user do download from the site? it may be that your downloads are incomplete |
if the task manager has worked before and it only recently started giving that problem it is probably the work of a virus; make sure your antivirus is up to date and do a full scan. of course this will not enable your task manager however it will keep that problem from reccuring once you've run the command that Deji mentioned |
@jedi my mistake it should have been "sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x05c6 product=0x1000" so try the process again: "sudo rmmod usbserial" sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x05c6 product=0x1000" sudo modprobe option" "dmesg | grep tty" give me outputs of: "dmesg | tail" and "tail /var/log/messages" you ARE using ubuntu9 aren't you? |
@4llerbe unfortunately i don't use gui when i use wvdial, i just run it from command line "sudo wvdial" but of course you have to have configured it first; if you like i can show you - if you don't think it'll be too complicated |
