personally i'm a linux guy -at least at home but the truth is windows still rules the roost. Recently i downloaded and installed windows 7; now that's a worthy successor to XP i must confess that of recent i've been using it more than my favorite linux oses (but i'll return soon - it's just the new os excitement) However the hardware requirements are still relatively high - 16gb harddisk for installation (before anybody makes noise about the fact that 16gb is not much i'll have you know that i have up to 8 linux distos, freebsd and opensolaris on my pc so you have and i likekeeping backups f installation files on my hard disk too) with 1.5gb ram memory isn't much of an issue; my biggest problem is probably my 1.8ghz CELERON processor (at this time a processor upgrade will mean a motherboard upgrade and a change in ram) all in all it's ok by the way for those of you still harping about vista, i say stop harping about a dead os (ok an os not going anywhere) everybody agrees that vista is MS greatest flop since WinME and i hear that win7 offiicial release will come out thiis year |
one thing i should say about speedtest; i don't know exactly how they conduct their test but i'm sure the speed you see isn't always the speed you get when downloading; i've had instances where i'm downloading at some particular speed but when i run speed test i see a download speed up to 2 or 3 times what i'm downloading with; even though i may be using a download manager |
sameolg616:believe me when i say this; it IS slower; the usb bus is even slower than your ide bus talkless of the ram which is the second fastest kind of memory tyou have on a typical pc (after the cache memory). Yes technically flash storage is faster than your normal magnetic disks - as long as they are on the same kind of bus but when it is usb, but then again you say you use it on vista; i knew there was a reason why i didn't like that OS but then again i don't really use it this is a link where they did some analysis on performance: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/analysis-vista-ready-boost,1891.html |
ok you got me with the last question but with the second, even you were not quite right I f you overtake the last person, then you are, ? in a multilap race you can be anything from first to second-to-the-last so there |
it will still be signiificantly slower than conventional ram; besides i hope you are not talking about usb flash 'cos i've booted an os from usb flash i can confidently assure you that booting from conventional hard disk is faster. My point, if you want more memory and don't want to buy more ram, you are better off increasing the size of your virtual memory instead - unless you are short on hard disk space too |
you probably have to get a new flash then |
try formatting and then copying files again; if you still can't use the files copied the flash is probably bad |
@flyuche what kind of internet connection do you use to connect with mint? the network wizard doesn't seem to support normal dialup so i use wvdial |
@flyuche i think one of the problems with openoffice.org - at least the one you download from the website is the fact that it's rpm based ( the installer) anyway after extracting on the cd to the folder and type java -jar <jarfile> (in the version of ooo that i have the <jar file> is javasetup.jar) that might work by the way in the menu under administration you'll find mintinstall - though i don't know if you'll find openoffice there ok my mistake i think it's the synaptic package manager you want to go to (that's if you want to download openoffice again - which i think you may have to seeing that mint does not use rpm) one other thing; you never did tell us what the error you got was but then again i thought mint came with openoffice in the first place; why do you want to install again? |
i agree unless you are prepared to wait till the beginning of next week i generally renew on weekends and unless i go to one of their offices (which i did this weekend) i take it for granted that i won't be able to browse till monday or tuesday |
what's a virtual hard drive or rather what do you mean by a virtual hard drive? |
no problem as long as he doesn't mention names |
idm's good i don't know how it compares with flashget though (i use flashget) lynxnoon:) could be for any no of reasons; compression time frame in fact i'm almost sure you rarely get the same speed with your download manager and your bandwidth monitor; one of the reasons's ids that neither is displaying exactly real-time values i.e. one might be giving u average every 5 secs another every 10 secs and as i said before, the download manager may be compressing from some site to incearase the size downloaded at a burst am not sayig that's what happens but these are possible reasons |
why do you want to be a presenter? for how long have you wanted to be a presenter? what have you done so far to bring you towards that goal of being a presenter? these are some questions you may want to answer for yourself (and for us too so that we can help) |
there's doh reh miiiiiiiiii; there's doh doh doh many types of sounds |
go 4 24 days prayer and fasting; one for each year that you've lived |
internet booster my foot; they don't work for linux!!! |
i don't feel threatened however if the womans to aggressive i define my boundaries and don't step beyond them; if the woman does, she's looking for trouble; fortunately i'm good at staying under radar (i.e. not attracting undue attention) |
i'm ot sure it will be serious over here anyway if nobody dis of a sickness in this country the sickness is not considered serious; besides how many people go to the hospital just because the have flu (cold) unless it becomes very serious i doubt there'll be any report of the infection over here |
Don't u watch EPL teams?? Don't u get erections for EPL teams??
what kind of statement is that? how can someone get erections for EPL teams or for any team for that matter? i can understand heart attack (don't we all almost do when we watch the super chickens playing) but not erections; there's nothing sexually stimulating about some guys playing football no matter what's at stake and just for the record i seldom watch matches (not that i deny ever watching) am more interested in knowing the score (i know the comment was not directed at me ut i just thot to clear matters before you decide to use some foul language on me) |
mtn? so u are the one who has been using all the gprs bandwidth; i was trying to check the champions league scores on wednesday on my phone 'cos there was no light; i tried in vain - it didn't go |
my advice; if you can get a usb modem like the novatel ovation or the epivalley for instance it's better that way you don't have to worry about whether it will work on your pc laptop or desktop as long as you're not using win98 it will on the down side they cost more than the pcmcia cards i bought my ovation 4 20k |
connection man, connection |
i don't have any probs with linux; it was piece of cake getting info about what driver to use; unfortunately i haven't been able to do the same with freebsd |
tell me something bigrovar, have u used freebsd beforeif so have you use a dialup modem to connect to the internet? i've been trying out some oses but until i can at least get a working internet connection i don't consider myself to have finished setting it up and i uses dialup (ok evdo but it's still dialup) |
mint uses upstart? how come i missed that? but i do understand what you mean by the bsd style scripts; easier to monitor and modify; have looked at arch; nice distro; can be as lightweight as you want it to be; however am not yet used to using package managers - i find them a little annoying yeah i guess i could disable the dependency check on installing but it's not quite the same; maybe 'cos i started with slack; but then again each to his own opinion one other thing about ubuntu; if you don't have a woring internet connection at home you could always order; they always send a free cd; of course it would be nicer if it was a free mint cd since you can play your multimedia out of the box while with ubuntu you still have to download the codecs - either manually (a painful process) or using an internet connection |
lynxnoon:even though mint is based on ubuntu i have to disagree with you; for one thing the default ubuntu installation doesn't invlude propriety media codecs like mp3 support; besides mint is supposed to be easier to use another difference is the fact that ubuntu no longer uses /etc/inittab; instead it uses something called upstart in starting up (and i'm not talking about the bootloader) i don't know if any other distro has also adopted upstart and then ubuntu has wubi -- the windows installer which mint does not have; personally i prefer ubuntu, i like the colors better and because ubuntu has a wider customer and support base you are more likely to get support for it than mint |
yep definitely virus infection; however just cleaning out the virus won't fix your problem, you might have to google for more help |
actually with vista you can resize your partition and then create a new one |
go to device manager then insert your usb device; i believe you should see a yellow question mark indicating that the driver for the device is not installed or if the drivers are already on installed you should see some other device; if not then select action -> scan for hardware changes |
let me know if you want to go about that method so that i can give you more info; if so there should be a folder in your cd called isolinux if you copy and paste conents of isoinux.cfg i could help you configure grub4dos so that you can boot (this is configuration in windows) blackweaver:in retropect i realise that since you'll probably be running the os as a liveos you shouldn't have any problem even witrh ntfs filesystems |
@Azanor another alternative you could have taken was to install linux mint which is an ubuntu based distro and is rated 3rd after ubuntu and opensuse in distrowatch (distrowatch.com) with it you don't need to download all those codecs either but no wahala, it's all good |
