yeah you can get a usb one 4 less than 10k; i don't know how much exactly |
if your issue is the time lag of loading from cd, there's a way using grub4dos that you can use the os without having to use a cd; however you'll still be using it as a livecd only from your harddisk and your changes won't be saved and it won't be as fast as if it was actually installed; also what kernel does it use? ('cos if your partitons are ntfs and your kernel is 2.4.x or less you might have issues with that method (am not sure)) |
are you in lagos? you can buy in computer village; they even have usb tv cards (which is usefuil if you're using a laptop) though i recommend that you read the packaging well to ensure that the card has driver for windows Vista |
how many partitions does your harddisk have? if it has more than one partition with over 600mb space you can copy the xp installation files to that partition and start the setup from within windows - especially if your laptop can't boot from flash drive |
i only suggested puppy 'cos it comes with gparted; i wasn't suggesting that you use it as a replacement. also puppy linux livecd runs faster than gparted livecd since it loads the whole os into ram how much free space do you have on your harddisk anyway? and what version of auditor do you have? from what i've read about the os it seems it's based on knoppix; i do know that knoppix is not meant to be installed even though there are probably ways to install it; i don't know about Auditor; if it's the kind of os i think it may be it might require some decent hacking to get it running |
does your cd have gparted? if not and if you have a decent enough internet connection you can download gparted liveced another os you can download is puppy linux which also comes with gparted and runs faster puppy linux (the latest) is about 80+mb but you can also download one of the older versions which are much smaller the gparted is to resize your partition without losing your partition. Though they always tell you to back up your data, as long as u know what you are doing yoou shouldn't have any problem; or you could get partition magic and use that to resize your disk partition and creatre a new one in the space freed. after that you can install the linux os in the new partition |
these last few days i think starcomms has become ridiculously slow - especially before 12pm at least in my area - Ogba() |
if you want to marry him do so, if you don't want to, say no but do what YOU want to do thsi is not the place to be seeking advice about who to marry |
yes i susect that you've overwritten your mbr (master boot ecord); tell me which did you install last ubuntu or windows 7 either way use the installation disk of the last os to repair unfortunately i haven't used windows 7 before in fact the last windows os i installed was xp so am not sure of the steps involved in using win7 to repair your mbr |
funny enough i actually believe vista's probably better than xp but that doesn't change the fact that i don't like it; am not particularly impressed by the fancy aero effects and i guess i'm too used to having my menu above my navigation buttons but the killer is the fact that th os requires so much memory; unless i'm using over 3gb ram i would always be thinkin that with xp i would have more ram available for my user programs |
Dual Core:i take it you don't download large files unless you've found a way to beat the 3gb download limit |
if iboost had worked for me i won't have bothered getting izap; meen the thing was just too slow |
obinna5000:yes it's a USB modem, but it's also a mobile phone which means that unlike your regular usb modem it has its own power source - battery in fact it's just like using your mobile phone to browse; nothing drains your phone battery faster except (maybe) voice calls (i virtually killed the battery of my nokia mobile phone that way) and most starcomms phones (at least the mobile ones) are not known for long battery lives |
mykali:i read the book but even when i was reading it i figured out the answer before it was said it was the break without falling that gave me the clue oya next question |
ubuntu ultimate, can't say i've heard of it in addition type either dmesg | grep Networkand paste output @bigrovar shouldn't we just ask him to print out the output of dmesg? there may be some information that we might miss otherwise |
bigrovar:rpm fans will kill you for that statement tho i admit that i prefer deb based distros to rpms bigrovar:first time you try to play an mp3 file ubuntu will offer to download some files (codecs) that you need to be able to play mp3s as long as you have a working internet connection you shouldn't have a problem bigrovar:i guess the problem should be a network setup one; as far as i know linux has support for most network cards and most pc vendors don't change network chipsets the way they change sound and video |
when you put on the system do you get to the point where the windows logo shows? in short what is the last thing you see before the system reboots? oh and i assume you are using windows; what version exactly? also do you have the installation cd? am sure you don't have to format your harddisk to fix your problem |
hyprof na God go bless you o |
i once bought a 1gb ddr2 ram module for 4k - actually not too long ago, unfortunately i got home to find out my mobo actually uses ddr1; wnt back to the shop, they didn't have ddr1 so i couldn't exchange it. i still have that ram module around somewhere |
bigrovar:smart move, i don't know why i never thought of that myself |
one questio, how did you get it to connect/browse the first time? |
can you give us more info? what os are you using? what did you do exactly? and what exactly are you trying to do? why do you want to format? (if that's what you really want tot do) |
try another broswer; if it works then you have to clear the original brower's cache |
nah didn't see any noiceable difference when using 1x which's one of the reasons i moved to izap |
oyb:even with the 1gn ram i would still prefer to use xp; anyway i'be been accused of running too many applications at once (i don't know what they are talking about , after all am the one who disables most of those programs that automatically startup once they're installed and my task manager is perpetually up) but i do love a smoking pc which is why nowadays i just used linux at home lynxnoon:are they ubuntu packages? you downloaded them manually? just double click; the "installer" should come up |
i don't think you can get an offline installation yet i like the fact that you can drag tabs off the window and immediately you get another windowl the fact that it has a task manager i do have a grouse with it though; if you are downloading a file and the installation suddenly terminates, not only does it not resume from termination point (no big deal, even firefox does that) also if you try to redownload that file it copes the uncompleted download to your download location as if it were completed instead of starting afresh then i have to clear the cache i'm looking forward to the day it will support the level of plugins that firefox does. ie7/ie8? i don't use them |
@flyuche i actually prefer to do my partiitioning myself; well before i start any installation process (typical slackware user) gparted is a lovely partitioning tool almost as good as partition magic |
bigrovar:i feel you - about the noobie stuff and i think i've done a few things myself too; neer used my pc as a server yet though have tried like 10 +/- distros; tell me something do you know how i can configure ppp on freebsd 7? |
@lynxnoon 8.04's ok i like the wubi thing (u know being able to install within windows and all) it's hard to find people who'll take an interest in linux and the partition stuff is one of the excusesthing they'll give. i'm running out of partitions myself as to 3d icons, have never tried them - not much of a graphics person in fact my favorite wm is very lightweight called icewm - not kde or gnome or even xfce and then now use programs from any of these desktop environs to back up however can you connect to the internet normally on 8.04? @bigrovar yeah mandriva 2009's a bit crazy, i actually didn't have to configure the modem, the thing just detected it. my biggest grouse with it is that it keeps mounting all my partitions - very annoying when you have up to 30 partitions i think the problem with opensuse (at least version 11 that i have) is kde4 i've heard a number of complaints about it but i feel uyou, that thing drags ok so the packa\ge manager thing was not just my modem; i had to download some of the packages i wanted manually before installing Fedora, i think it's ok though when i first installed i couldn't see the mouse pointer, i had to go to some site where i got instruction on how to make it visible I got debian recently but haven't yet got it on the net; if you like trying out livecds you can try puppy linux, nothing as powerful as your major distros but you have an almost complete environment under less than 100mb, run safely on 512mb ram and once you've finished booting you can remove your cd; i'm not sure yo'll want to try slackware though - like it myself nut it's not big on the graphics; also no "package manager" as such; it will allow you to install whatever you want then you have to find your depedencies yourself -- actually usually not too bad, many times the dependencies are included, i think slackware packages are usually larger 'cos of this. If you have a problem with partitioning you may want to stay away from it tho. Me when i want to instal any os i first create my partitions, slackware just asks me for what partition to use - doesn't assume and by default it starts in runlevel 3 i.e command line but am used to it |
i use a few different ditros; most of the time i use slackware, however i also use ububntu 8.04, 7.10 i also have Fedora 10 and opensuse 11 and mandriva 2008 (actually i've beeen trying to get as many distros as possible since i started using starcomms broadband) what kernel version are you using and which type of modem? ps if you don;t know which kernel version you are using type uname -r and post the output |
you man that even with their "fair usage policy" their service is still poor? sheesh what crap!! |
