Nairaland / General / Several People Dead, Hundreds In Hospital After Deadly Gas Leaked Into Homes by boman2014: 5:16pm On May 07, 2020
Guardian UK has reported that at least 9 people have died, including two children, and hundreds have been admitted to hospital with fears the death toll could rise, after a gas leak at a chemical factory in South-east India penetrated into surrounding residential area.

Styrene from the plastics plant owned by Korea’s LG Corp started leaking into the surrounding residential area from about 3am on Thursday morning while people were sleeping.

It incapacitated some people in their homes and caused others to collapse in the streets in the area on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam city on India’s east coast.

Police said the leak was from two 5,000-tonne tanks that had been unattended since India imposed a coronavirus lockdown in late March, though a spokesman for LG said maintenance staff were present at the facility when the accident occurred.

Footage from the area around the plant showed people, including children, lying in the streets, and dead cows with white substances trailing from their noses.

News of the leak caused people to flee the area and some appeared to have collapsed as they were trying to flee the area on foot or by motor-scooters.

One of the victims, a medical student, was overcome with fumes and fell from his balcony, said Dr Surendra Kumar Chellarapu, a neurosurgeon at the local King George’s hospital.

“He woke up gasping for breath and rushed out onto the balcony of his room for air. But he lost his balance and fell two floors down from the balcony. He died later at the hospital of head injuries,” Chellarapu said.

He said ambulances were lining up at the hospital on Thursday morning with affected people. “Most were suffering from vomiting, eye irritation, skin rashes and breathing problems but most are out of danger,” he said.

The hospital was already struggling with Covid-19 patients and would be severely strained by the leak, he added.

A general surgeon at King George’s hospital, Dr N Dwarakanath, said that of about 300 patients there, most were older, more than 40 were children and 15 were on ventilators, The Guardian reports.

But B K Naik, the district hospitals coordinator, said at least 1,000 people had been sent to different hospitals, and that it was feared many others may be unconscious in their homes.

“Another thing is that it is still too early in the morning, and there are people who were sleeping inside their homes and are unconscious,” Naik told Agence France-Presse.

“The authorities are checking [in houses] as well. We are working to get people to the hospital. They need oxygenation and fresh air.”

Religion / God Is Angry With People Using Perfumes And Deodorants - Born Again by boman2014: 4:19pm On May 06, 2020
A Nigerian born again Christian has shared a
" revelation" she got from God about use of perfumes
and deodorants.

According to the Mugechi Monika, people get
tormented by demons when they use perfumes and
there is a spirit of pride in people who use perfumes
and deodorants because some of the items are
dedicated to the demons after production.

Her lengthy post reads;

Grace, peace and mercy unto you all my brethren who
are reading this post. I once said that I will share a
revelation, that God gave to me concerning the use of
perfumes and deodorants. I delayed in sharing the
dream as I was waiting for the Lord to give me a
confirmation in His word.

In my dream, I was sleeping and a demon came upon
my shoulder and started irritating me. I tried to rebuke
it in the name of Jesus Christ but it would not leave. I
tried to quote scripture but it would not stop irritating
me and it even started irritating my armpit.

The Lord gave me understanding that the demon was
tormenting me because of the deodorant I use. Then
in my mind I made up my mind to stop using
deodorants and then my dream ended. Let's examine
the scriptures;

And it shall come to pass that in stead of sweet smell
there shall be a stink and instead of a girdle a rent
and instead of well set hair baldness and instead of a
stomacher a girding of sackcloth and burning instead
of beauty.(Isaiah 3;24)

Here we see that, the Lord is angry with the sweet
smell coming from perfumes that the women of
Jerusalem are using. I have heard of testimonies from
former members of the occult who were married to
mermaids. Each one of them testifies that on
summoning the mermaids their presence would be
detected by the smell of perfume.

There's a spirit of pride in people who use perfumes
and deodorants and even some types of lotions as
some of these things after manufacturing are
dedicated to demons. From my personal experience
when I used to use deodorants,I had a sensation of
pride.

In Exodus 30;22-31 God tells Moses to make a sacred
annointing oil and the pure sweet-smelling incense
mixed like perfume. After the the instruction God
warned Moses never to make any other like it and that
it should not be poured upon any man's flesh because
it is Holy and it's only consecrated to the Lord.

Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured neither shall
ye make any other like it,after the composition of it,it
is Holy and it shall be holy unto you.(Exodus 30;32)
In Proverbs 7;17 talks about the prostitute and how
she uses perfume to seduce men. And that's the
purpose of perfumes, deodrants and some lotions for a
seductive spirit is attached to them.

As Christians we should be clean and neat but we are
warned to abstain from things that defile us,things
sacrifficed to idols. If you doubt this truth,go boldly
before the throne and ask God to reveal it to you.

Religion / People Allowed In Market For 6hrs But Not Allowed In Church For 2hrs - Oyedepo by boman2014: 4:08pm On May 06, 2020
However, speaking during the Covenant Hour of Prayer
programme of the Church held at it's headquarters in Otta,
Ogun state today May 6, the clergyman said he suspects
foul play and that 'the voice of darkness is targeting the
church because the growth and expansion of the church is
the greatest headache of the devil. '

According to Oyedepo, the church has recorded more
healings than any other place yet they are closed while
hospitals that record huge deaths have been left opened.
“There is something wrong, for people to be
allowed to be in the market for six hours and
cannot be in church for two hours, it is an upside
down way for looking at things.

Which one is more orderly? The market or the
church?

I can smell a rat. The Lord spoke to me on it
strongly on it yesterday. I can smell a rat behind
all this. It is how do we stop the church from
exploding.

The voice of darkness are influencing people at
various levels targeting the church because the
growth and expansion of the church is the
greatest headache of the devil. But the gates of
hell shall not prevail.

The devil and his agents shall surely pay for this.
I don't know what hospital that records the kind of
healings that the church of God records. And now
hospitals where people die everyday is open but
the church is closed.” the Bishop stated

He went ahead to declare that the world is free and the
nations are liberated from continuous lockdown.

Religion / COVID-19: Apostle Suleman And Five Thousand Dollar Healing Challenge By Leo Igwe by boman2014: 10:36pm On May 03, 2020
Apostle Suleman, will you accept the
challenge this time? Is there any pastor
who could rise to the occasion? A
coronavirus stricken world is waiting to
benefit from your healing powers.

Once again I am challenging, the founder of
Omega Ministries, Apostle Suleman, to heal a
coronavirus patient and get a sum of money,
this time a higher amount-five thousand US
dollars. I am throwing the challenge one more
time because Suleman has in his response
refused to categorically accept or decline the
offer. Suleman seemed to imply that the
amount, which I had earlier advanced was
little.

Let's not forget that in his widely circulated
video, Apostle Suleman offered to heal
COVID19 patients for free. Thus a thousand
dollars offered for him to perform the same
activity could not have been a disincentive. I
have castigated Suleman for being insensitive
and for pretending to have a cure for a virus
that has killed tens of thousands of people
worldwide

I urged the NCDC to sanction him for
evangelical recklessness, and for advancing
propositions that could lead to the spread of
the infection and more deaths. In the article, I
made it clear that Apostle Suleman was
peddling bogus therapeutic claims given the
fact that there was no evidence that prayer
could heal any bacterial or viral infection or any
disease at all.

Surprisingly, this insightful comment did not go
down well with this pastor. And in his reply,
Suleman denounced me. He adjudged my
statement as 'nonsense', stating that God was
bigger than the coronavirus. I said well, if he
believed that prayer had any medical efficacy,
and could heal COVID19 patients, then he
should come forward and prove it under
scientific conditions.

Apostle Suleman boasted that he could heal 18
out of 20 patients. I asked this televangelist to
heal just one coronavirus patient and go home
with seed money of a thousand dollars. Is that
not a good offer? Is that amount not more than
the monthly tithes of some of his church
members? I even went further to give him an
alternative option. That, in a situation where
legal and ethical concerns stopped him from
accessing and healing a COVID19 patient, he
could faith-heal an HIV patient at the same
fee. Was that not magnanimous?

Instead of taking advantage of this historic
opportunity to demonstrate his faith healing
abilities, Apostle Suleman resorted to being
evasive and making excuses. He stated that he
would send me details of the people he had
healed. Did I ask him for that? No. Did I
challenge him to produce the names of those
that he had healed? Not at all. He went further
to indulge in personal attacks, describing the
one thousand dollars that I offered as a sign
that I was 'broke' and 'poor'. I mean, that was
not the issue at stake. I did not challenge
Apostle Suleman to a show of wealth; to
demonstrate if he was rich or if he was richer
than me. I asked him to prove in a way that
was scientifically confirmable that he could heal
a COVID19 patient as he claimed. That was all.
Once again he dodged the matter and could
not demonstrate his ability to heal a patient
through prayer.

Now it could be that Apostle Suleman was
unable to accept the challenge because the
amount was too small as he hinted. So a higher
amount could get him to perform. Look the
world urgently needs a cure for the
coronavirus. There is no better point in human
history that the healing power is needed than
now. The world is literally in lockdown and
many local and international businesses have
been grounded due to the coronavirus
pandemic. So it is proper to incentivize the
discovery of a cure or a healing facility even at
a paltry sum. Anyone who claims to have an
ability to heal by faith and prayer should be
allowed to demonstrate it even if at an extra
cost.

Apostle Suleman should bear in mind that if he
succeeds in healing a COVID19 patient through
prayer, he would instantly become a billionaire.
He would be richer than the Bill Gates of this
world and then stop relying on tithes and
offering. And who turns down such an
opportunity for a financial breakthrough? That
was why after some thoughtful consideration, I
decided to challenge Apostle Suleman again.

This time I am challenging him to demonstrate
his so-called gift or power of healing a
COVID19/HIV person and take home five
thousand dollars. This healing performance will
take place under agreed scientific conditions
and the money will be handed over to Suleman
after the healing has been confirmed. I hope
that Suleman accepts the challenge this time so
that the world would bear witness to his special
gift. Whether for a fee or for free, Suleman
should come forward and prove his faith
healing abilities. No more excuses!

And if perchance, Apostle Suleman forges
another alibi, and declines this healing
challenge. If he refuses to rise to the occasion
as he did when I offered a thousand dollars, I
hope other pastors who claim to have such
powers would come forward and heal a COVID/
HIV patient through prayers and take home the
sum of money.

Apostle Suleman, will you accept the challenge
this time? Is there any pastor who could rise to
the occasion? A coronavirus stricken world is
waiting to benefit from your healing powers

Politics / No One Asked US For Compensation Over 2009 Flu Chinese Embassy shades Ezekwesili by boman2014: 9:42pm On May 03, 2020
The Chinese embassy in Nigeria has
berated those demanding compensation
from the Asian country over the
COVID-19 pandemic.

The coronavirus was first recorded in
Wuhan, China, and the country has been
accused of mismanaging the outbreak.
The embassy, in an article published in
The Guardian , took a jab at Oby Ezekwesili,
a former minister of education, who said
the country must “pay reparations to Africa
for its coronavirus failures”.

Ezekwesili had written : “The continent must
be accorded damages and liability
compensation from China, the rich and
powerful country that failed to
transparently and effectively manage this
global catastrophe.”

However, reacting on Sunday, Sun Saixiong,
press secretary of the Chinese embassy in
Nigeria, said Ezekwesili’s comments “make
no sense at all”.

Saixiong said China has taken “the most
comprehensive, rigorous and thorough
measures” to contain the spread of the
disease, and has also “made tremendous
sacrifices and made significant contributions
to the global response”.

“The virus is a common enemy to all
mankind and may strike anytime,
anywhere. Like other countries, China is
also a victim, not a perpetrator, even less
an accomplice of COVID-19,” he added.

“In the face of major public health crises
and infectious diseases, the international
community should stand in solidarity and
work together, not resort to mutual
accusation or demand retribution and
accountability. As we recall, there has never
been any precedence of the latter.

“Did anyone ask the US to offer
compensations for the 2009 H1N1 flu, which
was first diagnosed before breaking out on
a large scale in the US and then spread to
214 countries and regions, killing nearly
200,000 people?

“AIDS was first reported in the US in the
1980s and then swept across the world,
including Africa, causing untold sufferings to
countless victims. And we don’t remember
Mrs. Ezekwesili coming forward to ask the
US to be held accountable?

“The financial turmoil in the US triggered by
the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008
turned into a global financial crisis. Did
anyone ask the US to take the
consequences?”

The official said the world must understand
that “our enemy is the virus, not China” and
it can only defeat COVID-19 by “pulling
together” not “attacking and discrediting
others”.

“We hope that Mrs. Ezekwesili will respect
facts, science, and international consensus,
stop letting herself dance to other’s tune,
stop attacking and blaming China for
nothing, and stop making irresponsible
remarks,” he added.

Celebrities / Nigerians And Ugandans Drag Each Other After Ugandan Tweeted 'parte After Parte' by boman2014: 5:33pm On May 03, 2020
Nigerians and Ugandans are dragging each
other on Twitter after a Ugandan threw the
first punch.

It all began when a Ugandan Twitter user
named Sharon Godwin tweeted: "The sooner
Nigeria drops this childish sense of
entitlement they have over this continent the
better. Y’all can’t be good in everything. YOU
DON’T OWN AFRICA! Uganda is a way better
country than Nigeria politically,
geographically, socially. Even in music we
beat u guys! I said it.

"Uganda’s Parte after Parte is bigger than the
whole of Nigerian music industry. Argue with
bubu."

Nigerians hit back and this led to a Twitter
war between both countries, making the
hashtag #UGANIG trend.

Politics / Ex-governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, Flees To Abuja To Avoid COVID-19 Test by boman2014: 4:57pm On May 03, 2020
Residents of Maiduguri, capital of Borno State,
have expressed concerns after the whereabouts
of former governor of the state, Ali Modu
Sheriff, became a subject of debate.

SaharaReporters gathered that Sheriff had
refused to make himself available for COVID-19
test despite meeting two prominent citizens of
the state, who died of the virus recently.

A member of the state prevention and
response team said the former governor was
one of the contacts being traced and linked up
with late former governor, Mohammed Goni,
and Shehu of Bama, Alhaji Kyari Elkanemi, who
both died of the virus.

Both Goni and Elkanemi had had last week
attended the funeral of Sheriff's late father,
Galadima Modu Sheriff, in Maiduguri where
social distancing rules were broken by
attendees.

Also, during the three days of mourning, they
were said to have had meetings with Sheriff at
his father's residence and his private residence
in GRA Maiduguri.

But a source close to the former governor said
he had fled to Abuja to avoid health officials
especially from the Nigeria Centre for Disease
Control and the state’s COVID-19 prevention
and team from taking his sample for test.

“We are surprised that someone like him would
be afraid to get tested. They called him several
times to make himself available for testing but
he refused. He deceived them and ran away to
Abuja with few of his aides.

“This is someone who had different meetings
with the late Goni,” the source said.

Politics / BREAKING : NJC Suspends Judge For Age Falsification by boman2014: 2:55pm On Apr 24, 2020
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has
suspended Francis Chukwuma Abosi,
acting president of the customary court
of appeal, and Aliyu Musa Liman, a judge
of Bauchi state high court, over judicial
misconduct.

In a statement by Soji Oye, the council’s
director of information, “Abosi was
recommended for compulsory retirement
following the falsification of his date of birth
from 1950 to 1958”.

“Findings showed that he was supposed to
have retired in November 2015 when he
clocked the mandatory retirement age of
Sixty five (65) years,” he said.

“Council decided to recommend for his
compulsory retirement to governor Hope
Uzodinma of Imo State and to also deduct
the salaries he had earned from November
2015 to date from his retirement benefit.”

The NJC also forwarded its recommendation
for the compulsory retirement of Liman to
the governor of Bauchi state for failing to
deliver judgment in a case for over four
years.

“Musa Liman was recommended to the
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed for
compulsory retirement pursuant to the
findings by the council for his failure to
deliver judgement in suit No BA/100/2010,
between Abubakar Isa and Sheik Tahir
Usman Bauchi within the three months
period stipulated by the 1999 constitution of
the federal republic of Nigeria,” Oye said.

“Council viewed his lordship’s failure to
deliver judgement for nearly four years as a
misconduct, contrary to section 292 (1)(b) of
the constitution of the federal republic of
Nigeria, 1999, as amended and rules 1.3
and 3.7 of the 2016 revised code of conduct
for judicial officers of the federal republic of
Nigeria.”

The two judges have been suspended
pending the approval of the
recommendation for their compulsory
retirement by their state governors.

Petitions against O.A. Musa, justice of the
high court of the FCT; Muhammed A. Sambo
and Sa’ad Ibrahim Zadawa of the high court
of Justice, Bauchi state, were dismissed for
“either lacking in merit or being subjudice”.

Romance / South African Lady Calls Nigerian Girls 'prostitutes' And Calls Out Nigerian Men by boman2014: 1:27pm On Apr 24, 2020
A South African lady known as Zethu Ankosi on Twitter, has lashed out at Nigerian men after narrating her experience with a Nigerian man who slid into her DM.

According to the Ankosi, she and the Nigerian man known as Lawrence Okoro started chatting on Twitter and the conversation was all smooth until she revealed she was in South Africa and could only come to see him if he took care of her flight expenses.

The Nigerian man who wasn't pleased to hear that the lady lives in South Africa, said he wasted his time chatting with her; ''What the hell, you just made me waste time and data on a fruitless journey'' he wrote

To which the South African girl asked if he was used to spending money ''on his cheap Nigerian girls''.

It led to an exchange of words between the pair, and the South African lady posted the screenshots of the chat on her Twitter handle.

''Stupid Nigerian Men with misplaced priorities, go do that with the prostitutes calling themselves ladies in your poor country @LawrenceOkoroTL'' she captioned her post.

Politics / What Abba Kyari Tried To Do For Nigeria Before His Death - The Economist by boman2014: 1:09pm On Apr 24, 2020
An article by The Economist of London has
explained what Abba Kyari tried to do for
Nigeria before his sad demise.
Abba Kyari

The Economist of London says Abba Kyari, the
late chief of staff to President Muhammadu
Buhari, tried to clean up Nigeria before his
demise.

Exactly one week ago, Kyari died from
COVID-19 complications. He had tested positive
for the disease after a trip to Germany where
he attended a meeting with officials of Siemens
to discuss issues relating to the Nigerian power
sector.

In a piece published on Thursday ,

It was a rare display of emotion by
Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s phlegmatic
president. In a written tribute to Abba Kyari,
his chief of staff, who died in Lagos on April
17th after catching covid-19, Mr Buhari told of
how his “dearest friend” of more than 40 years
tried to improve governance and reduce
corruption in Africa’s most populous country. He
was “the very best of us”, wrote the president.

While Mr Kyari was alive, others were much less
kind. Many saw him as the figurehead for a
shadowy cabal that controlled policy and
appointments, and granted favours and
contracts. Cabinet ministers grumbled that they
could not get past his door to discuss important
issues with a distant and apathetic president.
Mr Kyari’s economic thinking, which seemed
stuck in the 1970s, was also criticised.

There was some truth to these accusations. Yet
there is also a broader parable of Mr Kyari. It is
one of a largely honourable man who went to
the heart of a thoroughly corrupt and
dysfunctional system, aiming to reform it—but
who struggled to overcome its inertia amid a
series of crises.

Like his ascetic boss (pictured, seated), Mr Kyari
(standing) was a man of modest habits, at least
by the standards of Nigeria’s elite. He was
known to turn down offers of free upgrades to
first class (he thought it vulgar) before taking his
seat in business class on British Airways flights.
His weaknesses were for books on political
economy and plates of well-done kippers at the
Dean Street Townhouse in London.

The corruption and decay of Nigeria’s state, and
the inequality they bred, dismayed and worried
him. Nigeria had to change, he argued. The
question was whether it would be through
orderly reform or chaotic breakdown.

When seeing your correspondent one evening in
Abuja, Mr Kyari pointed to a bag stuffed with
$100 bills. It had been “forgotten” by an earlier
visitor—the boss of an energy company—who
sheepishly came to collect it after getting an
earful. “Much too much of our work is spent on
stopping our own people stealing,” Mr Kyari
said.

The chief of staff, who had studied law at
Cambridge University and been in charge of a
successful bank before Mr Buhari hired him in
2015, thought the state should play a big role in
the economy. He would speak fondly of British
Rail in the 1970s before it was privatised (an era
of strikes and awful food, as Brits remember it).

And he clashed with the imf when it urged
Nigeria to liberalise its fixed exchange rates. But
he was, in essence, a pragmatist who thought
ideology was a distraction from the bigger tasks
of enforcing the rule of law and improving
governance.

He was also cursed with bad luck. Mr Buhari
took power after a crash in oil prices that
pushed the country into recession and starved it
of the money needed to fight the jihadists of
Boko Haram. Mr Kyari had hoped that Mr
Buhari’s second term would provide an
opportunity to liberalise the corrupt oil and gas
industries by making contracts and licences
more transparent and taking them out from
under the thumb of politicians. Yet covid-19
may well dash those plans, just as it has
deprived Mr Buhari’s administration of its
rudder.

Kyari was described as “a largely honourable man” who wanted the best for his country.

The Economist said Kyari was often bothered
about the degree of corruption in the country
and thought of ways to end it.

An instance was cited on how the boss of an
energy company “forgot” a bag stuffed with
$100 bills at his office but Kyari was quoted to
have said: “much too much of our work is
spent on stopping our own people stealing”.

“While Mr Kyari was alive, others were much
less kind. Many saw him as the figurehead for
a shadowy cabal that controlled policy and
appointments, and granted favours and
contracts,” the piece read.

“Cabinet ministers grumbled that they could not
get past his door to discuss important issues
with a distant and apathetic president. Mr
Kyari’s economic thinking, which seemed stuck
in the 1970s, was also criticised.

“There was some truth to these accusations.
Yet there is also a broader parable of Mr Kyari.
It is one of a largely honourable man who went
to the heart of a thoroughly corrupt and
dysfunctional system, aiming to reform it—but
who struggled to overcome its inertia amid a

“He was known to turn down offers of free

before taking his seat in business class on
British Airways flights.

“The corruption and decay of Nigeria’s state,
and the inequality they bred, dismayed and
worried him. Nigeria had to change, he argued.
The question was whether it would be through
orderly reform or chaotic breakdown.”

The publication said it is unfortunate that Kyari
served in a government which took power after
crash in oil prices pushed the country into
recession.

It said the late chief of staff had hoped that
Buhari’s second term “would provide an
opportunity to liberalise the corrupt oil and gas
industries by making contracts and licences
more transparent and taking them out from
under the thumb of politicians.”
