A preliminary study has found correlations between blood type and the likelihood of being hospitalised with COVID -19, which has infected 25, 066 people worldwide, according to an AFP tally . Researchers at the Southern University of Science and Technology , Shenzhen , China, conducted the study in collaboration with other Chinese institutions . Led by Jiao Zhao , the study examined blood group distribution among 2 , 173 individuals admitted to hospitals with COVID -19 . The people each received care at one of three hospitals in Wuhan, China, or Shenzhen . The researchers also compared the patients ’ blood group distributions to that of a group representative of the general population — totaling 3, 694 people — in Wuhan . Data from the researchers showed that blood group A had a significantly higher risk for COVID - 19, compared with non -A blood groups, whereas blood group O had a significantly lower risk for the infectious disease compared with non -O blood groups. According to Zhao , “people with blood group A have a significantly higher risk for acquiring COVID -19 , compared with non -A blood groups ; whereas blood group O has a significantly lower risk for the infection compared with non -O blood group. Although, the study is yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal and other experts have not yet had a chance to assess the researchers’ methodology and findings, Head of Haematology and Blood Transfusion at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital , Idi - Araba, Prof. Sulaiman Akanmu , said , “ It’ s not impossible, such a thing may happen. ” Speaking with PUNCH HealthWise , Prof. Akanmu said the study was new to him, adding that blood group type had been associated with varieties of disease states. “It is known that a particular disease is more commonly found in a particular blood group type or that a blood group type is more protective of development of a particular disease , but that it is related to COVID -19 is new to me . “If it is true, it will not be difficult to explain .” Continuing, he said , “For example, if an agent is going to attach to a cell, then that particular cell must have on its surface membrane a receptor that the infectious agents could attach to . https://punchng.com/people-with-type-a-blood-more-at-risk-of-covid-19-study/ lalasticlala |

PREMIUM TIMES reports that the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, on Sunday said the current outbreak of COVID-19 across the world will soon subside but will not be ‘completely eradicated’. Mr Adeboye, who addressed his congregation across the globe via a live broadcast on Sunday, also said God had revealed to him earlier in the year that the world would experience a ‘compulsory holiday’, hence his earlier call to church members to undertake a 50-day fast in January. The Redeemed Church, like many others across the nation, has stopped physical services, and resorted to online services in line with the directives of many governments to halt mass gathering. The directives were given as a means of curbing the coronavirus which has so far infected about 26 persons in Nigeria and killed thousands across the globe. “I have heard one prophet say the coronavirus will soon die. And I said ‘amen’. You know prophets are greater than pastors. I heard another prophet say the world will experience rain for seven days and (it) will wash the plague away. I said ‘amen’. But I am speaking with you my children. The coronavirus will certainly subside after God has removed the plague but to say it will die, let me speak in local parlance, ‘na lie’ (it is a lie),” the pastor said. He said the outbreak was God’s way of calling the attention of the whole world to godly living, irrespective of class or social standing and to show that He is still in control of human affairs. He said this is because the ‘compulsory holiday’ now affected both the low and high class citizens as most nations across the world have now locked down their communities and closed their borders. He also disagreed with those that argue that Satan was the source of all evil and not God. He reminded them of the story of Job in the Bible. “Even Satan could not touch Job with any ailment or tragedy until God gave him express permission. The coronavirus plague is God’s way of telling the world, He is still in control. It will certainly subside and go away ‘for a while’ and the world will recover,” he said. Exhortation Speaking copiously from Psalm 91, 121, Isaiah 25 and a few other scriptures, Mr Adeboye urged Christians not to fret but to depend on God for protection in this trying time. He said for those, who put their trust in God for their protection and provision, no plague is permitted to come near them. “He that dwells in the secret place of the almighty must abide under the shadow of the almighty. The conditions is for you to ‘dwell’ and ‘abide’ so you can enjoy the scriptural blessings God has promised in this end time,” Mr Adeboye said. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/383162-what-god-told-me-about-coronavirus-pastor-adeboye.html

The Federal Government on Thursday maintained that its stance on regulating the social media in the country. The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, disclosed this in Abuja at a news conference. He said the Federal Government was already in touch with the two major social media platforms — Facebook and Google — over the issue. Mohammed gave recent examples of fake news that made it resolve to go ahead with the planned registration which he said would ensure that damages were not done to the country through the social media. “We are pushing ahead with our plan to sanitize the social media, working with stakeholders. By March 2, 2020, we will inaugurate a stakeholders committee that will deliberate and recommend the way forward. “We are also planning a major international conference that will bring together the tech companies, media practitioners, policy makers and others as part of efforts to tackle this growing canker-worm. “Last week, I met with representatives of Google and Facebook for the same purpose. The situation is dire, and no nation that values its peace, security and stability will allow an irresponsible use of the social media. “There has been a spike in the dissemination of fake news and the use of disinformation in recent times. This is not accidental: Fake news, disinformation and hate speech have become the weapons of choice to create tension in the polity and destabilise the country. READ ALSO: Social Media Regulation: FG Will Not Back Down – Lai Mohammed “And those behind them, the naysayers, are not about to relent. Those behind this campaign of fake news and disinformation have also deployed new tactics, top of which is the recycling of old news items and videos. “For some people, the 2019 elections are not over. They are stuck in the pre-election mode. And they must continue to use these weapons to put Nigeria on edge,” he said. The Minister described report of plans by the government to float new ‘communication regulations’ aimed at recording all calls, monitoring WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook as “fake.” He spoke further: “Another good example is the video of the over 400 young men suspected to be Boko Haram members who were intercepted in Abia State in 2014. “About two weeks ago, the video came back into circulation, creating panic in the polity. The intention of those behind it is simple: to create tension and panic in the country.’ Other recent instances of fake news, according to the Mohammed, are reports that President Buhari will be travelling to the United Kingdom for 20 days before proceeding to Saudi Arabia and Austria; that the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, was attacked at Rigasa train station in Kaduna and that the Nigerian Air Force killed 250 Boko Haram insurgents. He advised Nigerians “to be circumspect in believing or circulating fake news.” https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2020/2/no-going-back-on-social-media-regulation-lai-mohammed.html |
