Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar who is the Sultan of Sokoto has faced heavy criticism from pro-Biafra agitators following statement he made in Enugu about killing of Igbos in the country. The Sultan spoke at a grand reception in his honour organised in Nsukka, Enugu on TuesdayDecember 20. He said Igbos were the first to be targeted during crisis in the country not because they were Igbos but because they were till every part of the country. He said: “I want to say that nobody in the north aims to kill any Igbo because he is an Igboman. They are killed because they are the industrious ones found in everywhere and in every village but nobody plans or sends people to kill the Igbos.” Vanguard reports that the Movement for the Actualisation for a Sovereign State Of Biafra (MASSOB) described the Sultan’s statement as a testament to the hatred the north has for the South. The group said: “The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra blasts Sultan of Sokoto for his unguarded and insensitive address at Nsukka yesterday when he visited. “This expressed feelings and assertion of the Islamic leader shows and proves the high level of hatred, hypocrisy and wicked mind of Hausa-Fulani Islamic fundamentalists in Nigeria against the people of Biafra. “For the Islamic religious leader in Nigeria to openly admit that Ndigbo are always killed and massacred without provocation in Nigeria because of our industriousness and unique ability to reside in every nooks and crannies of Nigeria doing businesses is terrible. https://www.naij.com/1078850-massob-lashes-sultan-sokoto.html |

The herdsmen abducted the traditional ruler of the kingdom Orhifi Enemor II, while another royal father escaped abduction. According to Vanguard, the kidnappers lay in ambush for Enemor II, while he was on his way to Asaba for the monthly meeting of traditional rulers. The abduction occurred just after Osisa Bridge in Ndokwa East local government area. According to the royal family, the kidnappers have demanded for N50 million in ransom. They said: “They have made contact, asking that they want N50 million. The monarch told his abductors, who reportedly spoke Hausa language, that he is a royal father and offered them money to release him, but they refused. “They removed his crown and bundled him (Ovie of Agbarha kingdom) into the bush just like they did to the Ubulu Uku monarch, the late Obi Ofulue, who they took hostage and killed last year.” Another royal father, Okukeren III, Ovie of Arhavwarien, an Urhobo Kingdom was luckier as he managed to escape. The state governor Ifeanyi Okowa had been informed of the abduction and the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed the kidnapped and said the police were already on the hunt for the suspected kidnappers. https://www.naij.com/1078841-herdsmen-attack-delta-community-abduct-king.html |

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar IV, visited the Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose on Wednesday, December 21. The sultan had on Monday,December 19, visited Enugu state to attend the grand reception in honour of the 2015/2016 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) Champions, the Enugu Rangers International Football club, at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu. Sa’ad Abubakar III in his visit to the Southeast revealed that the Igbo people’s presence in all nooks and crannies of the country made them visible target during crises period. A bench warrant has been issued against the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Adewale Akanbi by a Magistrate court in Osogbo, the capital of Osun state. The Punch reports that the decision of the court followed the monarch’s refusal to appear in a matter instituted by the Oluwo of Iwo Oke, Oba Kadiri Adeoye. The monarch was reportedly dragged to court on some criminal allegations. The report said Oba Akanbi was represented in court on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 by his counsel, Mr Olaide Yekeen, but the presiding magistrate Olusola Aluko issued the bench warrant despite three applications, one for stay of proceeding; the other for a notice of preliminary objection and the third for a notice of appeal filed before the court. It was learnt that at the last hearing of the case on December 2, the magistrate threatened to issue a bench warrant against the monarch if he refused to appear in court on Tuesday. Yekeen had told the court that his client had several applications before it. He also argued that the notice of preliminary objection bordered on competence and jurisdiction of the court and should be heard first before the substantive application. But Soji Oyetayo, the applicant’s counsel, told the court that it made an order which the Oluwo had refused to complied with. In his ruling, the magistrate agreed with the respondent based on the issue of jurisdiction adding that the notice of appeal was not ripe. “The court mandated the first respondent to appear in court.“He has violated the court order of the last adjourned date. I hereby issue a bench warrant against him,” the magistrate said. https://www.naij.com/1078523-breaking-court-issues-warrant-top-yoruba-monarch.html |

Another security report cleared Ibrahim Magu for confirmation as Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman, it was learnt yesterday. The Department of State Services (DSS) sent two reports to the Senate, which did not screen Magu but “rejected” his nomination. The DSS letter clearing Magu for consideration, dated October 3, 2016, was sent to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang. Although the letter accused Magu of some infractions, it said the Senate could give Magu the benefit of the doubt. The Nation stumbled on the letter, which reads: “Following the receipt if the aforementioned request, subject was thoroughly screened. ”Investigation revealed that Magu is currently occupying a residence rented for N40m at N20m per annum. This accommodation was not paid from the commission’s finances but by one Air Commodore (name withheld), a questionable businessman and an ally of the subject who has subsequently been arrested by the service.” The DSS, in the letter, also said its investigation revealed that Magu “parades a twin personality as an anti-corruption Czar and an ally of a corrupt man.” But the letter recommended that Magu be considered for the office. It added: “In the light of the ongoing, Magu’s integrity may be in doubt. Nonetheless, in view of his-achievements since assumption of office in acting capacity, it may be expedient to give him benefit of doubt and be considered.” The two letters were sent to the Senate on the same date through the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori and Enang. “We sensed that something was wrong because such letters ought to be addressed to the President of the Senate. It was also strange that the letters came to the Senate through two channels. This is not our procedure.” The two letters have sparked a big row in the Senate, with some senators collecting signatures to remove Senate Leader Ali Ndume. A source said: “There is a cold war in the Senate because some Senators were not aware of the letter which recommended Magu’s consideration. “The aggrieved senators also suspected some hidden agenda because only the letter which indicted Magu as unfit for the office was released to the public. “Some anti-Magu senators were said to be unhappy with Ndume’s support for Magu which they consider not in tandem with the position of the Senate rejecting his nomination. “A crisis of confidence has erupted and the anti-Magu senators last night were compiling the ‘sins’ of Ndume in order to pass a vote of no confidence on him by collecting impeachment signatures. “But those sympathetic to Ndume said it will be impossible to remove the Senate Leader because he enjoys tremendous goodwill in the Senate.” A Senator said: “What else do they want Ndume to do? He is a Senator from Borno State and the man we are talking about is also from the state. He cannot fold his arms. “Some Senators don’t even know that Ndume is just being patriotic. Magu is from the majority Kanuri ethnic group. Ndume is from a minority ethnic group in the state. “If Ndume wants to be selfish, he would just distance himself from the travails of anyone from the majority ethnic group.” Presidential Assistant Enang said last night he would not want to be drawn into the issue. He told our correspondent on the telephone: “I don’t want to descend into the arena because whatever I say will deepen the controversy. “My job is that of a liaison officer and I want to stick to that role.” Disturbed by the intrigues over Magu’s fate, some donor agencies, anti-graft war partners and foreign missions are anxious over the anti-graft war’s future. Most of the donor agencies, partners and foreign missions are said to favour Magu’s retention. The intrigues have heightened in the Presidency. Although those against Magu are said to be losing out in the last 48 hours, they have not given up. Most of the donor agencies, partners and foreign missions are disturbed about the scandal woven around Magu, whose rejection without “fair hearing” was also rated by some of them as “political.” A government source said: “The Presidency will resolve this challenge at hand in EFCC soon.” A source said: “The AGF is already working on the Senate Committee’s report and DSS reports on Magu. His advisory might guide the government accordingly.” Some of the donor agencies and partners that have collaborated with the EFCC include United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), US Justice Department, the DFID, FBI, the National Crime Agency( NCA), the Metropolitan Police, the Interpol, City of London police, Serious Organized Crime Agency(SOCA), UK-sponsored Justice 4 All (J4ALL) , the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Western Australia Police and some foreign missions. The UNODC project led to the treatment of more than 5000 petitions, 400 convictions and the recovery of about $6.5billion proceeds of crimes. A diplomatic source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, said: “We are all worried that each time your country takes a step forward to fight corruption, you end up going 10 steps backward. Your anti-corruption war is laced with bitter politics. “Most of us have opened desks to monitor what will become of the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu whom we have all worked with. “We, however, recognise that it is purely your internal affair which we cannot dabble in. “Some of us have sought clarifications from some people in government and the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC). “ All we need is a fair and just process on all issues affecting the war against corruption in your country. But the way things are going, it is a bit unclear.” Another source from a foreign mission said: “We have worked closely with Magu and naturally, we have some anxiety on what next. “Some donor agencies and missions have invested a lot in assisting anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria, especially EFCC, but there is always instability. “For instance, in the last 12 years, you have had four people managing the EFCC. We are all watching events before drawing our conclusions. “All I know is that the attitude of Nigeria towards tackling corruption might define its relationship with some countries.” A source in PACAC said: “We have been receiving enquiries from some foreign missions and international agencies.” Some of the assistance to EFCC are as follows: *The US Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI) donation of a forensic work station, titled F.R. E.D (Forensic Recovery of Evidence Device). * The payment of forensic accountant that assisted the EFCC to uncover those accused in the fuel subsidy fraud. *Joint tactical and operational activities like collaboration with the Interpol, City of London police, Serious Organised Crime Agency(SOCA). * NCA collaboration with EFCC to probe the oil sector during the tenure of a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison- Madueke. *Ongoing MoU between EFCC and Western Australia Police to combat internet fraud and money laundering. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/dss-senate-another-report-give-magu-chance/ |
The Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Gennadyevich Karlov, has been shot dead while speaking at an art exhibition in the Turkish capital. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made the announcement in a live televised statement, Sky News reports. She said: “Today in Ankara, as a result of an attack, the ambassador of the Russian Federation to Turkey, Andrey Gennadyevich Karlov, received a wound from which he died. “We regard this as a terrorist act. The murderers will be punished. The 62-year-old ambassador had been attending an art exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Centre in the Cankaya area of Ankara, along with other dignitaries and media. The gunman was Mevlut Mert Altintas, a 22-year-old who had been working for the riot police squad in Ankara for the past two-and-a-half years. He was off-duty when it was understood he entered the building using his police ID and opened fire on the ambassador as he made a speech. A video showed him shouting, “Don’t forget Aleppo, don’t forget Syria! So long as our brothers are not in safety, you will not taste safety either. Only my dead body will leave here. “Whoever is involved in this cruelty, one by one, you will pay for it. ” The gunman also shot three other people, although none were seriously injured, according to Turkey’s interior ministry. Turkish media said he then climbed to the second floor of the building before a 15-minute shootout with police, during which he was killed. A photographer from Associated Press who had been at the exhibition said the gunman had been wearing a suit and tie and had shouted “Allahu Akbar” before firing at least eight shots. He had also spoken in Russian and smashed several of the photos in the exhibition. https://www.naij.com/1078422-just-in-gunman-kills-russian-ambassador-in-turkey.html lalasticlala

Emerging reports from Taraba state suggests that about 42
people have lost their lives, following an ongoing violent clash
between Tivs and Fulanis in Sabon Gidan village of Dan Anacha
town. According to Premium Times, many others have been reported missing in the ongoing violent clash within the state. Sources from the area said the crisis started on Saturday when two corpses of Fulanis were found killed in a bush. This triggered their kingpins carrying out reprisal attacks on Tivs. "I counted about 20 corpses who were believed to have been killed early hours of today, Sunday,” a resident f the area told newsmen. “Many people including women and children are nowhere to be found,” the source added. When contacted, the Taraba police spokesperson, David Misal, confirmed the clash, saying more operatives have been drafted to the area to restore peace and order. He said the police could not yet ascertain the casualty figure. The Nation reports that the hacking to death of the farmers by suspected Fulani militia in Gassol Local Government Area has spilled to many Tiv villages, in spite of police and military presence in the area. The meeting by Commissioner of Police Yunas Babas, State President of Tiv Cultural and Social Association (TCSA) Goodman Dahida, President of Fulani’s Miyati-Alla, the Lamdo Gassol and security agencies to broker peace was fruitless Police, soldiers, Dahida and the Senior Special Assistant to Taraba State Governor, Hon. Jerry Tyolanga, confirmed the rise in death toll. Tiv homes were set ablaze, with smokes still billowing when The Nation visited the troubled area yesterday afternoon. Six persons were gunned down in Sabon Gari; 16 were slain in other villages. Among them were three women, eye-witnesses said. Four trucks conveyed bodies, which were killed. The bodies recovered from the “bush villages”. They were being taken to neighbouring Benue state. There was mass exodus of Tiv from Dan-Anacha –fleeing Taraba to Benue State where a bulk of their ethnic group resides. The displaced persons looked frustrated, most of them carrying heavy loads, children and domesticated animals but without transportation fares. Some were loudly crying and wailing over the loss of their loved ones. The renewed attack and killings of Tiv farmers began on Saturday in Dan-Anacha, whose name was recently changed to Kwararafa, as the state was busy at a “Peace Concert” in a stadium in Jalingo –the state capital – organised by Governor Darius Ishaku. Police spokesman David Mishal, who confirmed the killings, was still being expected to brief the press on the details yesterday. He described the incident as “undercover attacks where you invade someone’s home and attack him when there is no war going on”. Governor Darius Ishaku is seen by the Tiv in Taraba as a peace maker. They held a meeting in Jalingo yesterday on the killings, which are raising national concerns. The Tiv community alleged that yesterday’s killings followed a meeting between the Lamdo Gassol and the Fulani militias. “The meeting started by midnight and lasted till 4:00am when the militias began to invade Tiv homes,” one of the displaced farmers, who is injured, said. https://www.naij.com/1078188-just-in-ethnic-clash-taraba-42-killed.html |

Sergey Mavrodi, the founder of Mavrodi Mundial Movement (MMM) has written an open letter to Nigerian journalists whom he claimed are causing unnecessary tension in the country. According to him, MMM will be back by January as earlier stated, hence the rumour about the scheme collapse should stop. MMM founder Sergey Mavrodi tells Nigerian bloggers, journalist to leave MMM alone Mavrodi described articles from Nigerians journalists and bloggers as "provocative and worthless articles." Read Mavrodi's letter below. "Dear journalists, “analysts” and all kinds of “experts”!Please stop using MMM to gain cheap popularity. Leave us alone and let us work without interference. I’m just astonished by your irresponsibility and cynical attitude. Interests of millions of people, your fellow citizens are at stake. Don’t you have any sympathy for them? Why are you fueling hysteria around MMM and provoking a panic? Why are you doing this so diligently and persistently, what is your purpose? "In fact, absolutely all your provocative and worthless articles and “analyses” (I said “worthless” because you do not have any real information about what happens in the System, and might have never had; you simply invent everything, fabricate it) are merely negative: “MMM has collapsed!!!.. MMM will not be working in January!!!..” etc. Are you intentionally presenting all of it in such a manner and whipping up tension by any means possible in order to increase the ratings of your publications and attract attention to them? Don’t you care about people at all? "So, nothing has collapsed, and MMM will safely resume its work in January, as announced. Suspension of work for holidays is a usual thing, merely working moment, no more than that. It would have remained a normal, just a part of the usual routine, and might have gone almost unnoticed if it were not for your totally cynical and irresponsible attempts to advertise yourself, create a scandal out of nowhere, and make the most of this news topic in any possible way. "Again, leave MMM alone and let us work. Nothing has collapsed, and MMM will perfectly resume its work in January. We Can Change the World!" Ibrahim Maisule who served as an ambassador during the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo has blamed the former president for what he described as the disastrous administration of Goodluck Jonathan. In an interview with Vanguard, Maisule lashed out at Obasanjo for installing Jonathan as president as said Jonathan’s emergence was a sort of compensation for people from the south south region. He described Jonathan as politically inexperienced which was why a lot of embezzlement and misappropriation of fund took place during his presidential administration. Obasanjo must be stopped from installing presidents He said: “To start with, it is unconstitutional and a travesty of democracy, if, for any reason, one man, in a country of 180 million people, is allowed to install the country’s leaders. However, this has happened a couple of times in our recent history as a democratic country as Obasanjo, as a former military Head of State and former civilian President, has played a more than casual role in the emergence of former Presidents. The result, however, is that the country is worse for it, because Obasanjo, in exercising this influence, has not been guided by the best interest of the country. “Obasanjo was instrumental to the emergence of former President Goodluck Jonathan as Yar’Adua’s successor. It was Obasanjo that ensured that Jonathan was catapulted to the exalted position of the Vice President. Before then, Jonathan was deputy governor of Bayelsa State. “Obasanjo ensured the elevation of the inexperienced Jonathan as a political favour done to the people of the South-South from where the country derived huge chunk of its national revenue. “However, you would expect that if selecting Jonathan was for the benefit of the Niger Delta people, it would have been appropriate if the opinion leaders of the area were consulted and allowed to make an input. Rather, in his usual all-knowing manner, Obasanjo acted unilaterally and foisted a reluctant leader on a big and complex country like Nigeria. The rest like we all know is history. “The impact of Jonathan five years leadership on the economy of Nigeria and the alleged looting of national revenue and corruption under his watch, going by the exposure by the Muhammadu Buhari government, shows that, as Nigeria’s leader, Jonathan was a disaster, for which Obasanjo should be blamed. “It is important that the Nigerian people endeavour to take their political destiny in their own hands and reject the meddlesomeness of Obasanjo as the nation looks forward to the 2019 general elections. “What did we get from all those Obasanjo chose for us? His meddlesome in our national politics has brought us to where we’ve found ourselves. “All Nigerian presidents since Obasanjo’s exit 10 years ago have had his imprimatur. And what have we gotten from all of that except pain, hardship, stagflation, recession, hunger and starvation? Therefore, he should not be allowed or encouraged to select future leaders for the country, if we, as a people, are to escape from the recurring cycle of regret and failure which has been the lot of our political experience.” “What did we get from all those Obasanjo chose for us? Daily Trust is reporting that acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, risk being jailed for disobeying court orders. This was according to a notice by a magistrate court in Mpapa, Abuja, stating a committal action against anti-graft agency boss. The EFCC, Magistrate Okeagu Azubuike stated, had failed to comply with an order of court discharging an expired remand warrant for a defendant identified as Na'im Lawal on December and therefore endorsed form 48, 'Notice of Consequences of Disobedience to Order of Court' against the EFCC acting chairman. The accused was nabbed by the anti-corruption agency on October 14, 2016 after allegedly conspiring to steal government money and obtaining money under false pretence but the court has ruled in his favour. "Take Notice that unless you obey the order of court contained in the ruling of the court discharging the expired remand warrant issued by the Honourable Court and ordering the release of the applicant to his freedom on the 1st of December, 2016, you will be guilty of contempt of court and will be liable to committal to prison," the notice read. Recall that on Thursday, December 15, the Nigerian Senate refused to confirm the appointment of Magu as the chairman of the anti-graft body. Reports indicated that the upper chamber of the National Assembly rejected President Muhammadu Buhari's nomination based on the security report sent by the Department of State Service (DSS). https://www.naij.com/1078123-breaking-acting-efcc-chairman-magu-jailed-reason.html |
