An investigation by SaharaReporters suggests that Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State orchestrated a false and misleading campaign when he recently asserted that his state had earned $5 million by exporting vegetables. Speaking recently in Abuja, Mr. Obiano said his government had boosted agricultural exports and was selling millions worth of vegetables, mostly to Europe. Reports also said that these exports earnings are from pumpkin leaves and bitter leaves. SaharaReporters has found that, as part of Mr. Obiano’s campaign, he used images allegedly from Anambra farms depicting luscious produce, including red tomatoes. The governor’s public relations stunt has been circulating on Internet platforms featuring photos of tomato farms said to be producing “European standard” tomatoes. However, when SaharaReporters reverse-image- searched the photos being circulated by Mr. Obiano’s government, our investigators found that the images were lifted from other websites but deceptively identified as photos from Anambra farms. For example, an image of young vegetable plants actually comes from an Internet page from August 13, 2014, titled “Irrigation Practices in West Africa.” PART 2 Another photo circulated by Mr. Obiano can be traced back to a 2010 blog post by an American named Chris Courtin, who had taken the photo during his fellowship in Nyumbani Village in Kitui County, Kenya. In his blog post Mr. Courtin wrote about the tomatoes saying, “they grow mostly tomatoes in the greenhouses and they were the biggest tomato vines I had ever seen” and “aside from picking tomatoes I also picked cow peas.” https://saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/styles/normal_medium/public/Screenshot%202016-07-28%2017.08.48.png?itok=xf8GEeKN Our investigations learned that, as word began to spread that some photos released by the state government may have been taken from other sources, his team swung into action to create a series of photo events to demonstrate how well Anambra’s agricultural sector is doing. The desperate attempts resulted in several photo ops featuring rural farmers standing around a modest pile of leafy greens and in front of an Anambra State banner stating “Anambra State Government Agriculture Export Programme” and “Willie is Working”. One woman was photographed using her teeth to tear the leaves supposedly meant for export to Europe. https://saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/styles/normal_medium/public/IMG-20160726-WA0024.jpg?itok=9V_lEpKf Our investigators also found out that officials of Anambra State also visited the cargo section of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to pose with agricultural produce headed to South Africa with hurriedly made banners draped over one or two of the cargo parcels. https://saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/styles/normal_medium/public/IMG-20160726-WA0007.jpg?itok=5FxGMFOL SaharaReporters attempted to reach Mr. Obiano to ask certain questions, including information on the location of state farms large enough to produce agricultural products worth $5 million in exports, the specific companies used to ship the produce, and end-receiver documents from European buyers, but we were not able to reach him or any of his officials at the time of publication. http://saharareporters.com/2016/07/28/governor-obiano-anambra-lied-about-5-million-vegetable-exports

MTN Nigeria will list its shares on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2017, the telecoms giant said on Thursday. https://www.thecable.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/mtn-nigeria-653x365.jpg Stanbic IBTC Capital Limited (together with its affiliates, The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited and Standard Advisory London Limited) and Citigroup Global Markets Limited have been appointed as the joint transaction advisors and joint global coordinators for the listing. Stanbic will be the lead issuing house. A full syndicate including Nigerian receiving agents, Nigerian receiving banks and other advisers will be appointed “in due course”, the company said, maintaining, however, that the proposed listing “would be subject to suitable market circumstances and conditions and the appropriate approvals from relevant regulators and other stakeholders”. It earlier announced its intention to list after the reduction of its fine by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) but did not give a specific time. MTN Nigeria’s fine for failing to disconnect unregistered subscribers was reduced from N1.4 trillion to N330 billion after a series of negotiations. It then announced that as part of the settlement arrangement, it would list its shares on the NSE “as soon as commercially and legally possible”. “MTN Nigeria is pleased to announce that its Board of Directors has resolved to proceed with preparations for a listing of MTN Nigeria on The NSE as soon as commercially and legally possible and has established a management task team with the responsibility to guide the company towards a listing. At present, MTN Nigeria is targeting that the listing takes place during 2017, subject to suitable market conditions,” the statement from its group corporate affairs said. MTN Nigeria is the biggest operator in Nigeria and its eventual listing is expected to boost the Nigerian capital market and create wealth for Nigerians. The group announced its first half-year (H1) loss in at least 20 years following the NCC fine. Lalasticlala https://www.thecable.ng/breaking-mtn-nigeria-list-nse-2017 |

Nigeria, we hail thee, Our own dear native land, Though tribe and tongue may differ, In brotherhood we stand, Nigerians all are proud to serve Our sovereign Motherland. Our flag shall be a symbol That truth and justice reign, In peace or battle honour’d And this we count as gain, To hand on to our children A banner without stain. O God of all creation, Grant this our one request, Help us to build a nation Where no man is oppressed, And so with peace and plenty Nigeria may be blessed. Those were the very words Nigerians sang back in the 60’s and 70’s as our National Anthem. A time where true patriotism reigned in the blood streams of every Nigerian and orderliness was seen from afar. No one has to question twice who we were as a country and what we stood for. Conversing with our parents you could almost feel the joy and yearn for the old times and days where peace and plenty were in abundance. I got a few pictures from the 60’s and 70’s that’s got me wishing I was born then. Compared to what we have now, should I say I prefer the olden days? No doubt the ‘now’ has it’s pro’s but the average Nigerian is yet to experience that. As a people, we still remain hopeful. 1.
