OP,

You will need to configure your PC so that it recognizes your phone as a modem. What that means is that you first need to install the drivers that came with your cable, or get the drivers of the internet (google for it). Then create a Dial Up Networking connection (DUN) with the appropriate settings for your provider (MTN, Glo, etc.). Also configure your phone for GPRS if it's not already done. Once the connection is created on the PC, you should be able to connect via the DUN you created above. Either via cables or via bluetooth if your phone has one.

Can't really make out what you are asking. So, please rephrase, without shouting (using all caps).

dondele,

The OP asked for a suggestion and that's exactly what I gave (Just like everyone else did). People are going to have different experiences and it's up to OP to take the suggestions/recommendations and make a constructive decision based on that.
Computers › Re: Recommendations: Buying A New Laptop by Bossman(m): 7:15pm On Aug 02, 2006
Any of the basic laptops out there will suffice. Acer is cheap for a reason though. I have also had very good success with dell laptops. I actually just received shipment of an Inspiron 1705 yesterday. This will be my 3rd dell laptop. Nothing wrong with the other ones, I just needed to pass them on. I have heard good things about Toshiba too. I would recommend dell though. You can order it via their website, you will build it to suit your needs.  A basic dell laptop will come with everything you mentioned and more.
Phones › Re: MTN Nigeria GPRS [Includes Configuration Settings] by Bossman(m): 7:41pm On Jul 27, 2006
Mr. seun, Are the MTN settings still the same? I already have them on my phone? Got it from the mtn link above. I will be using an MTN sim when I visit Lagos in 5 weeks. Are all the sims automatically configured for GPRS (most likely) or one has to request that it be activated? Also, I read somewhere that GPRS is not available to the new 0806 numbers. Is there any truth to these. I don't see why they should restrict it as long as it's being paid for. Hopefully, I'll be able to browse via my laptop using the MTN sim. I have already setup an internet connection for MTN on the laptop.

OTOH, if my Virgin-UK payg sim works in Niger, I might just use that if it's cheaper. Virgin charges 5pounds/meg roamimg or not. I have not checked MTN's site to see their prices.
Programming › Re: Web Development Or Software Development: Which Is More Lucrative? by Bossman(m): 5:59pm On Jul 27, 2006
You can do both of  them. But, you need to learn software development (SD)very well.  A hard-core knowledge of  SD principles will go a long way in your career. With a good SD knowledge, you can easily do web development (WD). But, it's not the other way around. i.e. A person that only knows WD cannot just start to do SD. You can come across quite a few web developers that do not know much about programming.

The above is assuming that by WD we mean just web interface development. Such as HTML, JSP, etc.

I am a software developer (Mainly in Java). But, I am also involved in some web development. Because, I write web apps. I use HTML, JSP, JavaScript, etc.

On this end, ordinary web developers are a dime a dozen. And, they make a whole lot less than software developers.
Programming › Re: Java Programming For Dummies by Bossman(m): 9:46pm On Jul 23, 2006
You need to download the JDK first. You can get it from sun's site. You have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). That's just allows you to execute java progarams, for example an applet.

After installing the JDK, then reinstall textpad, it will find the JDK and do any necessary setup that will allow you to compile/execute from textpad's menu.

Good job gbengaijot. I just want to clarify that JavaScript is not a programming language but a scripting language. You cannot use it to build standalone applications. But, it use is mainly to enhance the functionality web pages.

gbengaijot:
I am learning javascript for now as its part of my first year course and its the first programming language i am meant to learn. Any help u can offer?

Read the following thread in its entirety then decide how much money you can afford to loose.

I am curious about the Global sim. But, did not see any info about it on the website. Would you happen to know what' country's number the sim carries? I know there are several global sims.  Right now I am using riiing which carries a Liechtenstein number. It also has free incoming calls in a lot of countries including Nigeria.

Very nice notes sbucareer. Keep up the good work.

I noticed that below you mentioned compile, but I believe it was a typo and you actually meant translates or converts.

"The browser on the second hand compiles the HTML to what we see as visual presentation of website pages"
Programming › Re: Any Nigerian Women In Programming? by Bossman(m): 4:24pm On Jul 10, 2006
This does not only apply to Nigerian women and it has nothing to do with cracking their brain". Generally, there are more men than women in fields such as Engineering, application development, etc. But, more and more women have been getting into these fields. There are more women in these fields today than there ever was, at least here in th US. It's just a matter of time before we see more Nigerian ladies (based in Nigeria) get into the field. I have been in this field for quite some time, and I have come across quite a few female Nigerian application developers during this period.

I kind of noticed there are hardly any female posters to any of the programming forums here. At the same time, I do not think there are a lot of female engineers based in Nigeria. The society and our schools may have something to do with it. I guess, in NNigeria these fields are just not seen as female oriented. But, the Nigerian females that do venture into these fields are usually very good at it. At least the ones I have come across are.

Ouch! I'd say let it go quickly. And you guys are in love? So were you doing this with the hope that your sister will not find out or what? Also, is this really your blood sister or just a friend that you call a sister? I hope it's not the former. If it is, then you made a mistake. I know, it could have been worse. They were just bf/gf(they've broken up too), and not necessarily husband and wife. But, you should let the brotha go and try to amend things with your sister.

Computers › Re: Connect Ppc To A Laptop ? by Bossman(m): 3:26pm On Jul 06, 2006
Download the drivers for your phone. I am sure it's somewhere on the internet. Windows will recognize the phone once it's connected to the PC. Follow the installation directions and specify the location of the downloaded drivers. Once that is done, you need to create a Dial Up Networking (DUN) connection so that you can connect using your providers GPRS. You can either search this forum for the DUN settings or contact your provider.
Phones › Re: Be Warned by Bossman(m): 10:58am On Jul 06, 2006
I do not think IMEI blacklisting exists in Nigeria. If it does, you can just report the phone lost/stolen, and it will be added to the database shared by all the carriers. In essence, that phone will not be able to register on any of the networks there.

Smartsoft, don't worry about the response, that's expected.

As posted above, just make sure you outline the advantages of having a web presence will be. You can also use some competitors with web presence as an example. Also, follow up with them.

I have always said that. I can't believe how many posts I see in this forum with phone numbers, and sometimes IMEI numbers.
Travel › Re: What To Do With My Nigerian Passport? by Bossman(m): 8:05pm On Jul 03, 2006
Yep! You've got to hold on to that green passport. Funny enough, I sent my passport to the consulate in Atlanta for re-issue. It's already 10 years old, so I need a new one. Since, it's been about 4 weeks since I sent it, I called last Thursday to see why it's taking so long to get the new passport. This is something that's supposed to take 5 working days. Well, the passport officer at the other end said the "passport machine" is broken and he has no idea when it will be fixed. I'm like, what? You must be joking, well, he was not. I asked if he can send my passport and money back, so that I can try one of the other consulates. But, he said they have already cashed the money.

So, here I am planning on taking a trip home in Sept and not knowing if I will have my passport back then. Hopefully, they will come through. I just can't believe the kind of these people are providing!

I had to read it a couple of times in order to comprehend what OP was trying to say. Hope he takes any criticism as a constructive one.

sbucareer, a minor correction, Bill gates actually attended Harvard Univ. and not Howard Univ.  They sound very similar, but they are very different schools.

Compare your phone's specs to the game's requirements. You may not have enough memory to run the game?
Technology Market › Re: Where Can I Get A Free Laptop? by Bossman(m): 9:36pm On Jun 29, 2006
Yea! You get a trailer load of PCs. Out of which close to 90% are non functional and really need to be recycled. Now, the fella is way out there in Nigeria. Unless the companies in Nigeria also do this recycling thing, he is at loss. I guess it's some of these so called "recycled" PCs that end up in some of the Internet Cafe's out there. Heck! That's why I resort to just surfing the web via my phone when in Lagos. On the few occasions that I had to use the cafe, it's either the PC, browser, screen or something locked up, that I just gave up. I just ask my self, why are these folks shipping these PCs that are pretty much non-functional to our country?

BTW, I am not condemning him in anyway. I am just being truthful.
Technology Market › Re: Where Can I Get A Free Laptop? by Bossman(m): 6:00pm On Jun 29, 2006
edygirl, I was going to say the same thing. I already responded to his request for a free phone until I saw this.

I guess someone must have misinformed him about either the internet or nairaland. In his only 2 posts to this forum he is asking for free stuff.

Nothing is free my brotha! There is no free lunch anywhere, even here in Yankee.
Phones › Re: Need Help On Phone by Bossman(m): 5:48pm On Jun 29, 2006
I don't know about free. But, I am sure you can find a second hand/used phone for close to free. Also, if you know anyone abroad, see if they can send you a phone that they have laying around. As long as it has the bands used there. A lot of us have at least one phone laying around that will be useful for someone else.
Phones › Re: P900 user by Bossman(m): 3:55pm On Jun 29, 2006
Do not post your IMEI in a public forum. It's unbelievable! People post their phone numbers, IMEI #, etc. in this forum. I see a lot of posts around here with people posting their phone numbers. I visit a lot of forums, and you will never see people posting their phone/IMEI numbers. That's what PM is for.
Phones › Re: Unlocking Nokia 6630 by Bossman(m): 2:33pm On Jun 25, 2006
beckyangel, tmobile should be able to provide the unlock code for that phone. I believe it has to be registered to a tmobile account at the time the request for the code is made. So, if you are a tmobile customer, or know someone that's a customer, just register the phone to the account, and then ask for the unlock code. Here (Tmobile or Cingular ) will not charge for the unlock code, but I believe the UK providers charge about 10 pounds or so.
Phone/Internet Market › Re: Cheap International Calling Cards (Nigeria) by Bossman(m): 7:12pm On Jun 23, 2006
Make sure you are not comparing apples and oranges. See my post above,

It's dirt cheap to call landlines, and expensive to call mobiles. reason being that, incoming calls are free on mobiles in all GSM countries (except US) Well, it's not actually free, somebody pays for the call. It's called Calling Party Pays (CPP). With the calling card that I use, it costs me 1.5 and 4.0 cents to call a UK and Lagos landlines respectively, and it costs 20p to call both Lagos and UK mobiles.  It's the same for all calling cards, due toe the reason above.

The same thing also applies when you call a UK/Niger(or any other GSM country with free incoming calls) mobile vs landline.

Bottom line, incoming calls on your mobiles are not actually free. The caller pays the price.
Programming › Re: Web Based Software Vs Standalone Solution by Bossman(m): 11:17pm On Jun 22, 2006
Another thing to consider is the ubiquity of the browser. This has really aided the development of thin client applications. All that's needed to access the application is a browser. No need to worry about installing the app on each users PC. Obviously, a web based application will not be a solution for all applications, but for most applications these days, it's the most ideal and cost efficient way to go.
