It's like the difference between Hindi movies and Indian movies.   .   .  No one cares about it except the Indians themselves. .  . outside India, they's are both Indian movies.

. . . the point here is the joke's on all of you,  outside Nigeria. . . They will tell you Nigerians are fraudsters. Maybe then, you can sit with the person and start telling him or her you're not yoruba, you are igbo and hausa.  .  .

THERE WAS A TIME HERE IN NAIRALAND WE WERE ALL SAYING "WHERE IS RUGGEDMAN?" https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-324964.0.html

At one point or the other . . . you have to laylow for a while . . . Maybe Ruggedman got him or not, that's not my problem. But Tony Payne's revelation has more of his extended family issues in it ( and that's a bit far ) . . . and it's worth laying low for. . . Ruggedman can keep shouting about it cos afterall it's not his own house that he's ruining. . .

@bouzymill - When you you moved into facebppk, did you move with your friends? or did you not either get invitation from any of them or you invite them yourself?

Or probably make up your own friends there?

Just think before writing

You must be on some drugs or something before you typed that bolded part. What the hell is wrong with people like you? If you got a problem with the comment, criticize it and not come at me with some asinine jabs. Are you a kid who can't hold discussions without abuses? That's BS man. Watch it.

Normally, I wouldn't answer your question but I'ld let you have it since you have "thought before you typed"

Check the statistics. . . before facebook, most of the users of the two big giants back then, Myspace and hi5, were mostly in their early 20s and maybe 30s. They weren't offering much. And for a fact, only the internet savvy out of your friends were on hi5 back then. and Myspace just didn't cut it for real even though It stood as a social platform that was more effective for music artistes and all.

You can't compare the response these platforms (Myspace and Hi5) had to that of facebook. Facebook brought in people  who wouldn't think of going on the computer normally. It brought in people's Dads and Mums. Brought in even grandparents (Now Tell me how you think people of this age grade would want to do it again on another platform). It brought in people you wouldn't believe you would see online. Or do you want to tell me you haven't seen a friend request or see a friend online and ask yourself, "This guy too is on facebook? hehehe" mainly cos you never thought he/she could be the kind of person for computers and all.  Inshort, the only thing some people know how to do on the computer today alone is facebook (You should get to see these people on some other web applications). People buy laptops and Sh!t solely for facebooking (hear that, "Facebooking"wink grin grin grin. Now

The essence of my chitchat is this.  .  . Facebook's appearance was some sort of revolution and that's it. The ship is sailed. Revolutions don't really happen twice.

Twitter saw the fun and advantage in just "Status Update" and made it its own main feature. . . See how it is making sense today.

and the point again is the FEATURES OF GOOGLE+ are not exclusive, What if Facebook implements the same tomorrow? which is most likely they do.

That's my own opinion anyways. I may be wrong at the end of the day. Only time will tell.
Webmasters / Re: Can Google+ Compete With Facebook by bouzymill(m): 2:38pm On Jun 30, 2011
I'm not a pessimist, but Google+ project will probably fail. The reason is quite simple.

The unserious facebook users are there because it is "FACEBOOK". . . not because of the features on it.

The serious minded users, most of them, believe Facebook has done enough as a distraction and security risk and they can't see themselves taking that further with Google+

BUT THE MAIN POINT IS

If I move to Google+, Do I want to move my friends with me or I wait till all or at least, most of my friends move to Google+?? It's ridiculous.

Facebook has sailed that ship.

Even MySpace knows that. It has just been sold.

Small boy learnt web design from a 3 hour seminar and goes home with a 20 page "How to Design a Website" handout and a Adobe Dreamweaver CD. . .

Sees opportunity to design website for a company. . . Designs what he learnt from a "not even semi-educated" author of the 20 page handout . . .

naive client sees hiscompany.com and thinks that's the most important thing about having a website. . . gives small boy money and they think the job is done

Senseless hacker just went through some hacking forums and followed step by step tutorial on how to hack a website . . .

goes to small boy and naive client's website to try his skills on it. Gets a freepass and call himself a hacker. . .

My point is the whole web development game in Nigeria is b!llSh!t. We just really need to step out game up. Even our www.nigeria.gov.ng testifies to the fact that we dont have good designers and developers in Nigeria. So badly, the few good ones don't even reperesent Nigeria . . .

kheme:

lol those are my friends words, not mine.

fact is, i started with joomla, and when i need a module or extension and i can't find one with the exact features i need, i just write mine or customize the one with the closest available features to what i need.

but in wordpress, most of the extensions available most probably already do what the users want, and there's less need for more specific features. still, wordpress is for blog-type websites, so to speak. while joomla is more of general purpose, can be used as a regular website, or as a blog site, or more.

joomla seems to offer more customizations than wordpress (i've not used wordpress as extensively as i've used joomla)

have i answered this question??

Ok. . . Well, you're right to say wordpress is blogs or bloglike websites. . . Even the worpres development developed wordpress mainly for blogging and the likes. However, Wordpress has been developed into such a stage whereby you can do anything with it. You can turn wordpress into a cms if you know how to work with the template tags and the custom fields. I've seen big stores using wordpress with the wp-ecommerce plugin to make an ecommerce websites. While Wordpress might not be the most appropriate system for all these, I think a developer that knows his way around wordpress would turn wordpress into a workstation. I don't know how joomla or drupal works but i do know that you can turn your jquery code into a wordpress plugin or widget and the same goes for php codes. This is why I think wordpress can be a beast.

@Poster: dude, you have a few options. Try out the different CMS out there and decide which one you are most comfortable with.

The most common ones are Wordpress & Joomla. I use both, but i prefer Joomla for WEBSITES and i prefer wordpress for BLOG (or blog-like) websites. But if i had to choose just one, i'd choose joomla cos you can customize the most part of it easily.

As my friend once said, joomla is for coders, wordpress is for designers.

I'm just curious. . . I'm kinda interested in the above bolded statement. . .
Webmasters / Re: The Margin Top/bottom Css Quiz : Reminds me of quantitative aptitude! by bouzymill(m): 2:40pm On Apr 25, 2011
Sorry Guys, I missed out form the beginning! Av been out of work for three days now, and FYI, I have been helping my wife in the labour room while delivering our first baby. I'm really happy and I'm in a super mood today. .  .  *Yay*

To the question. with the way the browser snapshot is showing the output of what you are trying to do with the spacer class, I think I'ld rather use an unordered list. Reason is I'm not very sure if the span class can take "Display: inline-box" for span but if it does, then it takes care of everything else. But on a safer side, I prefer to use Unordered list. as in:

HTML:

<ul>
    <li>facebook</li>
    <li>twitter</li>
    <li>google</li>
    <li>yahoo</li>
</ul>

CSS:

ul {
overflow:hidden; (to prepare the Unodered lit for float)
width: auto; (to auto expand the width)
}

ul li {
float:left; (this would allow them to list beside each other)
margin: 5px 0 5px 0; (We have added our margin top and bottom)
list-style: none; (to remove the list bullets)
}

This is semantically correct and Like you said. this is 100% Gimmicks free.
Webmasters / Re: Why Most Webmasters Are Quite Poor! by bouzymill(m): 8:30pm On Apr 16, 2011
first, sorry for parading your thread with so much words, I just love the topic.

Why is it that most webmasters are really not as rich as you would expect.

"who is a webmaster?" Okay. I would assume you're talking about "Web designers, front-End Designers, front-end developers, back-end developers and co. There are things people need to know concerning web design and development generally. It is never a field for someone lazy. It will never be a field where mediocrity would win over professionalism. It is a field where your skillset speaks louder and more effectively than your "certificate". It is a challenging field whereby people bring out new things everyday. It's a field you can't catch up if you 're a slow learner and it's a field you can just become the most sought after.  .  . if your skills are really tight!

Now why all these? maybe "gibberrish" or irrelevant. But No. Wait and think for a second what is it exactly I'm trying to pinpoint?

What I'm trying to say is most "webmasters" as you called them, don't know they are part of larger communities. I used communities cos designers dont just belong to "InfoTech" as, in my own opinion, amateurs designer say, we belong to larger and more effective communities like the field of "branding", the field of "Visual Communication", the field of "psychology". Most designers don't even know that what they are designing is a "product". . . and what sells a product is how it is "branded". You are designing with one clear goal, which is "pulling traffic" and nothing pulls traffic than a website beautifully designed and functionally responsible; Hence "visual communication". When users come to your website, you want them to come back. . . and the only way to make them come back is to give them a wonderful experience. A good designer/developer or whatever would put himself in the shoes of the user and design from that perspective. . . That is "Psychology".

A designer who is aware of all these, would never be poor! to emphasize that, NEVER HAVE A REASON TO BE POOR. A designer who can think like that, would be able to come up with a very good idea that generates money. I have met alot of designers/ developers, listened to video interviews and conference sessions and what I've realized is that, most designers or developers have one project or the other that they do online. The latest I've just seen is www.shiftedit.com . . . an IDE web application. That is innovation. Not just that. You can think of anything. The web is an open market. all you need to pay for is domain name and you are a potential billionaire.

It is only sad that in Nigeria, I have found it really difficult to see a distinct desginer or a developer. Most people just parade themselves with half knowledge and don't really know what this field is. A guy just reads one book or just jump on one WYSIWYG application and start calling himself a web designer. Brings out a cardboard made business card and start advertising himself. They come to nairaland and start shouting "Get web design and hosting for 10,000 Naira". It is just pathetic when I see the jobs they've done. I usually call it "waste of domain name". I would give them the advice Sean Parker gave Mark Zuckerberg in the movie "Social Network", about advertising on facebook at the early stage. "You don't know what it is yet!" So, don't kill your skill by chasing money without knowing what that thing really is. Check the history and know its state. Then you know where exactly you are.

SO all in all, Only when Designers know their role and know what skill is required of them that they can think of creating something that brings money home! I have met so many designers and no one needs to tell you they are doing great. But ofcourse, most of us are obsessed, with buying gadgets. from MACbook to Drawing Pad to some sophisticated Monitors etc. So, it's not about getting rich like Dangote (maybe try another career). Paul Rand was never as rich as Dangote but he was very wealthy. He made it from graphic design. Paula Scher (not sure about that name) is rich as a graphic designer. one of my favourite bloggers, Abduzeedo, now works with google, and i'm sure we all know that "no be beans".  So, the point here is You can't just be poor if you got your skills right.

I hope to see Nigerian designers and developers up the scale one day.  .  .

Allow me to clarify: I don't "show my works" on online fora. Yes, I do have a website that features "my works" and if you are a potential client, in addition to sharing my url with you, I also visit you with an album containing a print out of same "works" but no, I won't display it on online fora. Also, if you YIM me privately, something many have done, I will show it to you but again, not on an online fora. I have my reasons. Better?

Well. . . I wouldn't go as far as asking a web designer what his ID is, in order to gain access to his previous works when I can view others with a single search in google (thinking the way real and powerful clients think) . That is why web designers, developers, anybody in the creative field, has an online porfolio for. . . "To show people". . an by the way, If I was interviewing a developer for a job, I wouldn't accept a "print out" as his portfolio. I mean, how do we access the functionality of the works? Except ofcourse he is applying as a front-End designer or a graphic designer Let's just move on from that. On to the next one.

1) The site you reference is not a 1-page site. Even if it were, I would prefer chazy's to yours.

2) At the end of the day, it is all about usability. There is a good book, now in its second edition that is called, "Don't make me think" by Steve Krug. I respectfully suggest that you read both editions

At first, that link was a mistake. I was trying to show this. http://www.agcchicago.org/netpositive/ . And none of them is my work. . . I just brought it up to show a one page site, which to me, is nice except you've got your own subjective reason to dislike a one page website. . . and that is totally welcome. And thank you so much for the book recommendation, I would seehow I can get hold of it digitally or the hard copy. Whichever way. and To reciprocate that, You can also try to read this, digitally though, "Designing With Progressive Enhancement" by Todd Parker et al. a little advanced but the best to meet up with the current design trend.

I would like to focus on the "eventually" part of this comment. These days, 80% of users, according to the last research that I read, don't even look past the 1st 5 returned results in google. "Eventually" no longer cuts it. Either you are in, assuming your site is aimed at generating income/donations, or u r out. Sorry.

Talking about SEO, I know my way around that to the level of my peers in the field so I can say a little bit about this. First, the research you are talking about is people searching based on "tags" (for example, someone searching for a web designer in Nigeria and types "Web Designer Nigeria" or "Web Designer in Nigeria"wink. Yes, you are right. they just look at the first few results and X the page. These people never pressed second page. I can say for years also, I have never clicked Page 2 of Google.

However, If you aim at optimizing your website for this kind of search, splitting the site would not do jerk! It's a fact. What you'ld be looking at are the Inline elements of the website. We are talking about wrapping even images in headers like [<h1>Logo of Whatever<img src="wateva.jpg" /></h1>] and some css to hide the text so that even google would read the images or flash that it wouldn't on a normal situation.

I completely agree with your concern on the SEO capabilities of the website what I'm just saying is that what you suggested might not have any effect.

1) Get rid of the intro page - old school
2) get rid of all animations - distracting
3) Maybe dull down the red
4) Huge black gap, after "contact us" in navigation
5) did you do the site last year and are now asking for review? copyright say 2010
6) Footer links don't match what is in nav area above. Inconsistency breeds confusion
7) Images in header are all "boxy" and stand out in the red. Make them blend into the background color
8 ) No keywords
9) Looks like you are embedding a web page inside of another web page, based on view source
10) Many of the products don't have descriptions

I try not to exceed 10 items, even when I find more than 10, so I am not taken for granted. Fix the above and you should have taken care of a bulk of the stuff.

Good luck!
With all therswww.gificlimited.come said. The most important is, this designer to know that the era of HTML 2.1 is far gone, "Tables" are no longer used for layout in Web Design. CSS gives you the luxury of load time and make your designs flexible. . giving you more room for innovation.

You seem to be a professional website designer. Can you please post links to websites you have designed? Maybe I can learn some stuff.
I don't share "my works" in the public arena.  You can contact me privately for that though wink
they are "your" works though, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't want to show it publicly. I mean designers have online portfolios and they show their works,

The point was actually to design a single-page website. see www.onepagelove.com.
The whole, "I am doing it because google (of course not google in this case) does it" doesn't and shouldn't fly all the time.  This is one of them.
No. One page website is fast becoming the trend,  started roughly middle 2009. If it's nice, why not? would you say website like this, www.agcchicago.org, is bad because it has implemented the one page technique? No. So, there's nothing absolutely wrong with the one page website.

--the gallery section cannot show up in a search engine as a different page because it's not a separate page.
Which is why I said split out the pages  tongue
What's the point here? Google would bring out the page eventually,  and the navigation is bold enough for the "searcher" to see the Gallery

The CSS is not on the html file. As for the JS, it was necessary for it to work as expected. I'll still 'gzip' the file to compress it.
I didn't say you had CSS on the page.  It was general advice.  As per javascript, you can call a fxn onload and then write the code for that function in a js file that you call in your script tag.
I totally cosign this. . . Otherwise, Your CSS and JQuery script keeps loading everytime you open another page.

The 'white space" near the contact form is a facebook Like Box. I wonder why it does not show on your browser. It works well on other computers. I'll troubleshoot that.
Always code for Firefox first, as a developer.  Also, code incrementally, which means, build a section and test in all browsers, then move to the next.  This way, you know where any problems come from.
Well,  The point is to be "Standard Complaint Web Developer" and always have workarounds for almighty Internet explorer. But on the real, Google Chrome and Firefox are leading the statistics of web users worldwide so,  try and test in them. . . while designing.

The client LOVES the header that way.
Still doesn't make it right. I have argued features with commissioners, and won so it isn't hard, as long as you do it professionally and with proof.

Exactly. Some clients can be a pain in the ass. . . but they came to you because they trust your job, so try and win it sometimes. and ultimately, like Paula Scher would say, learn to say No to some clients. It's either you get the job or not.

Concerning validation, I'll handle that ASAP. Currently, the message does not get sent unless an e-mail address is entered.
Your validation script isn't validating email addresses and phone numbers properly.  It isn't enough to just check if the field is empty.  You need to check for patterns as well.  Also, it isn't enough to just validate on the front end.  You need to validate  on the back end as well.  This helps mitigate security risks.

Well said.

Another point which I would like to chip in is the "width" of the container or wrapper or whatever you called it cos my monitor screen is 1400x900 (Large enough) and your site almost ate all the width up. Normally, Standardly. . . it shouldn't be more than 1000,  the "blueprint Grid" and "960Grid" use exactly 960 width (that is if you believe n CSS framework) and even if you don't,  you should know that it is important to keep the width within the user's screen. .  . with this design people using 800x600 '14 inch screen would be seriously disturbed by horizontally scrolling.

Plus your website is centralized but the picture in that left corner is f!cking up the "sense of centralization" so,  u really need to put it back.

Great Colour Combination.

overall, it is a very nice website.

rapjunkie:

what is the category?

We can argue they all are in the same Genre, Neo-Soul, and have all been influenced by hip hop in whatsoever way. But the breaking point is the "Style of delivery". Nneka's music has the influence of Afro-beat and revolutionary messages. Hence, the usual "upbeat" music. Howevever, Asa and Ayo's music have little influence of this and they usually give this "relax-and-listen" kind of music. Except for the fact that Asa's more eclectic, she can go anyway she wants, but for the major part of her musical career so far, She prefers to lean towards "moral messages" and treat the theme of love than any revolutionary sh!t.

Asa and Ayo are in this category, Nneka is not.

Meanwhile, if you've listened to Ayo's songs very well, You would realize she's got too much western influence even visible in her language. However Asa's deep knowledge and influence of ehr language in her music. . . takes her one step ahead of Ayo.  .  . Like both of them and prefer Ayo in some cases but this time,

I know you people have so much passion for Ruggedman but pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase! Let him shut the F!ck up! You helped this, you helped that. .  .  that does not make that person your slave forever. I don't fucking care about what happened between them, that's their f!cking business.  .  . But when I heard Ruggedman's track "a word is enough for the 9ice" and I heard a line like :

". . . I gave him life"

Then my jaw dropped. There's no blasphemy worse than this. God gives life and everything belongs to God. Ruggedman thought he was the King in 9ice's life, but little did he know that he was just a pawn in 9ice's succssful-so-far career.

Please, tell Ruggedman we have heard his point and we are tired of the emphasis.

The same way I did stuff for 9ice, I did stuff for Durella, D’banj and so many other people. Like D’banj, there was a show in Abuja, when he just came back from London. After the show, I called D’banj and Don Jazzy, saying we are doing Star Trek, a big show. So, when I am performing, after two or three songs, I would tell the audience that my friends from London would like to perform. I would bring D’banj and Don Jazzy on stage and will start singing Tongolo. The following year, they came to stardom because they were on Star Trek. That’s what I did to some reigning artistes of today

Are you guys too blind to see the vainglorious attitude? Damn! He talks too much. and he's still in one place. . . . No International affiliation, no international endorsement, not more than 3 albums in like 7 years, clothing line that we don't even see on the CEO anymore. And all we here is talk talk talk talk. Wake up

It doesn't sound like HJ is going to reply the diss. But believe me, any good MC would take Bamstyle out on this one.

The Rhyme style is so  played out. (I thought it was a song)

The hook, though sounds funny, doesn't match the "killer" theme of the 50cent beat. (Something like Vanilla Ice on RZA Beat) .    .     .

Let's see what happens

#movingon
