Webmasters / Re: Fireworks Vs Photoshop by bouzymill(m): 8:28am On Jan 27, 2012
Chief06:

Why am I not on point ? Why do you need photoshop to design a website in 2012 or Fireworks? CMS is the way to go, and neither PS or Fireworks is any form of CMS.

Then again, it's just my opinion,

Yes, you are right my man. Especially when web design is just a hobby for you.

BACK TO THE PROGRAM

The issue of Photoshop vs. Fireworks is usually funny to me. It's exactly like Windows vs. MAC. I've read severally from the two sides in various articles and while I strongly belong to the Photoshop side, the strong point of FW users is that what you will do in 5 steps in photoshop might be done by just one step in FW.

, and I have seen the UI works of true FW users and it's so awesome. So, the point is, there is no software better than the other. what works for a designer does not necessarily need to work for the other. Just master one that makes your works come out nice (or more importantly, "nice and fast"wink and use it.

But to serve as a counterpoint, all freelance projects that I've done, they've always required PSD as the deliverable. and at work, there is even no FW installed on any system, So, if you have plans to wok in an agency where what you do is mainly UI to be sliced by a frontend Developer, or just working in an agency generally, don't waste your time on FW.

My point.

Without veering too much off course, I think the main issue is with us as Nigerians and titles - the minute we learn something, we brand ourselves a "guru".  Someone like me, with over 15+ years experience, I still refer to myself as a beginner.  I majored in software engineering yet I never attach the title "engineer" to my name, unlike some other (Nigerian) colleagues.

I have said it before that I have worked with a guy who had a degree in history.  The guy was bar none, better than I was and probably still is.  As someone else has eluded to, it isn't how you get the knowledge but how well you use it.  It's like saying, I have a hammer and I want to construct a house.  Just because you know how to knock a nail into some piece of wood, it doesn't qualify you as a master carpenter.

I made myself clear when I said, "It's not how you get the knowledge. it is how you use it".  i explained by saying, quoting from that same post,
bouzymill:

So, my point exactly is, it is not how you obtain the knowledge that gives you your respect as a designer, but how you use it. Videos, pamphlets or the 20 naira handout in Ikeja can be a starting point for anybody, it's how passionate you are to know the key aspects of the development field that stands you out at the end of the day.
i never said, just watching a video is enough for you to become a professional. All I'm saying is it's a good starting point. . . like an introduction to the field. So, in reference to your analogy of "knowing how to knock a nail", it doesn't make them master carpenters but it can start as a kick off point of things to learn.

ajaxify:

The CMSes and Frameworks have added a lot of improvements to website development. And has made life easier for the likes of me and so many others.
But mind you, those that are not good developers will still remain so even with the frameworks and cmses.

So, it is not a threat to me at all. I make good money developing custom extensions, and tweaking plugins - patching this and that (if you can code well,
you can be an extension developer).

The downside to it is that, many Naija developers are very very lazy and look for easy way out. Someone downloads a video, sells it - someone buys it,
watches it - and gbam - he starts saying he can do any site with cms
. . .fine, he can try.

-  caramba

OmniPotens:

@ajaxify
Those video learners, what do we call them now; Developers or Designers or what? Now you see how they started their life and don't know anything on the profession. Next thing they do is to put up some pricing that you get mad at when you see them.

Good point so far but I would have to disagree on you guys' emphasis on "Video Learners". What I'm deducing from it is, "Learning from a video" makes you lesser than a developer or designer? I'm not sure that's really it. The point is most web designers and developers today, and i strongly emphasize that "most" (Cos i think if you pick 8 out of 10 industry leading characters) are self taught. Few years back, there wasn't really "A web design or development course" per se. . . Even now that they have it in some universities, they teach the "Applications" like Dreamweaver or so, instead of the "language" itself. Now, few schools are adopting the Opera Web Standards Curriculum and these are just few schools in the US and the UK.

So, my point exactly is, it is not how you obtain the knowledge that gives you your respect as a designer, but how you use it. Videos, pamphlets or the 20 naira handout in Ikeja can be a starting point for anybody, it's how passionate you are to know the key aspects of the development field that stands you out at the end of the day. after learning html and css from your wacky book, it is passion that makes you want to know more about Typography, User Experience, Usability, Grid System. Content Strategy, minimalism, above the fold, Cross Browser nuances and all the jargons we stuff our head with. So what they do might be wack, but how they got the knowledge isn't necessarily wack.

I agree with you about some of the job posters not knowing what they want: Back in 2000 or so, when ASP (original ASP, not .net) was just 1 year old, I recall stumbling upon an ad for an ASP developer. Requirement? 10 years of ASP experience. I laff wan die that day cool

As to your responses to my other comments:
This is why I feel very reluctant to work with people from Nigeria who contact me. I have even gotten the experience from a commissioner or 2. They want the world but want to pay peanuts. It also doesn't help that many of these requests are not necessarily for regular websites but clones of code-intensive web apps (SMS, shopping carts, Social networking etc)

My time is money. I can't spend 100 hours on a project and get paid say 60K or N600 (roughly $4) per hour. Sorry.

Lol @ that 10 years ASP experience. . . They were trying to be funky grin grin grin

There's really alot to do in terms of Web Development in Nigeria. And seriously, not to knock Nigeria off, even outside Nigeria, the client issue is another 4 year course I swear. because by default, they want everything to be on their website. before they tell you the project sef, you start hearing things like "i want it to be very interactive please". they shout interactive. . . interactive and yet they are the crops of people who are using Internet Explorer 6. Reason I usually prefer dealing with agency than straight clients.

funny enough i know this person in question, he doesnt really have a solid base. for real, since then (about 2months now) he hasnt found one. grin

oh I see. I can't really remember anymore. I just saw it randomly. but I think what prompted me to actually make it a thread topic was because it was a job ad from "Dealfish" (Now I'm not very sure.)

yawa-ti-de:

OP:
It might be low in your neck of the woods but maybe not in Nigeria.  It's all relative, as they say:

1) As I tell people where I am, whereas it costs $15 or roughly N2250 (on average) for a haircut, in Nigeria, same haircut is N50 (again, on average).  At 60K, dropping 2K on a haircut would be considered outrageous.  N50 is more manageable.  This is why I am the first to jump up when someone says, "they earn only $3 a month". Sure $3 a month is nothing in America but you can't say that for other parts of the world.  You have to go by what the $3 can buy.

I think I perfectly understand your point with the different country perspective. It makes alot of sense. But I could have just overlooked the whole ad if it was just an ad from any company with an "IT Department" or whatever they call it in 9ja. I can't really remember where I got it, like I said, but I think it was a and from "dealfish" or a company that generates its income from this particular department. As such, I thought the salary should be a bit more attractive to make this people comfortable.

yawa-ti-de:

2) The price range is probably what the market can tolerate

4) In my neck of the woods, in order to remain competitive, you pretty much have to know a little of everything as well.  Why? You don't want to limit yourself when searching for jobs.  A typical job application might say, "JSP is preferred but ASP is considered a plus".  Such applications among others serves to limit applicants and (IMHO) to reinforce the fact that programming isn't all about actual coding but your ability to think and how you think, in order to come up with a solution.  Though I know YUI, jQuery, MooTools and DOJO, I stick with jQuery.  The others are "good to haves", in case all the jobs at the time I am applying don't want jQuery.  If you divide the amount of money they pay by the time I have spent studying all these things, it isn't worth it.  Again, I learn them to remain competitive.

5) That salary range might not include other benefits (fun fridays, team outings, commissions, etc).  Browsing many of the top web dev companies in Nigeria, I am seeing (to my delight) that many are indulging in the "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" concept. . . and this a good thing.  In fact, some people consider this to be more than the money they are making.  After all, if they die due to stress, who is the one that suffers?

Again, it's all relative, IMHO

I guess your point about being a basic salary might be the case. But what I found out after reading the topic myself,  again is that all these job specs, sometimes, these employers don't really know what they are talking about. they usually do copy and paste from other related job ad. I have seen that so well, even on Behance where a job ad says they need a "UX Designer" and the job spec goes like HTML/CSS, Jquery (These to me are a must, even if he won't necessarily work with them) but it's outrageous to ask "UX Designer" to be well grounded in "Ruby on Rails" (and this I have seen). So, I gues this is where the confusion comes in about the salary range.

fluxdon:

Maybe we should first start by asking, how much is the web industry worth in Nigeria? How much revenue can web development firms make? How does the Nigeria business elite see web business? Hopefully, if we can answer these questions or even more then we would be able to what is worth it and what is not.

guess i didn't consider all these before my anger at the ad but I believe by now the industry should be in a more comfortable zone in Nigeria. I may be wrong . . .  I don't know how it is in Naija anyway.

I cant really argue for the fist one but I'm very sure the second guy isn't cuffed.

I see you got issues with my "Not in Nigeira ooo". I actually didn't mean it as an insult to Nigerian developers. that was why I said in my next response that

Well . . . Don't get me wrong on the "Nigeria" point. I specifically said not in Nigeria cos most of the developers' projects that are online are usually below par or just something you know already. Those who are doing real stuff in Nigeria don't really share knowledge online.

However, in the UK, US or everywhere else in short, just like you have rightly said, people do stuff, talk about it on their blogs and talk about what goes into it and where they have borrowed from.

So, dont let it force you into a block. The aim is not to do exactly what they have done but rather know what's behind their concept and broaden your horizon.

and forreal that's the point. I never knew some designers/developers existed in Nigeria until I searched on "Zerply" and "Behance". Those were the places I met people doing real stuff. My take is that, you don't have to search so hard to find the top notch designers in Nigeria to motivate upcoming developers. Atleast, People like Ethan Marcotte, Andy Budd, Andy Clarke, Zeldman, etc. are topnotch designers in the UK and US alike . . . and we get to see what they are doing and they talk about how they tackle different issues and even have different stands on major issues facing web development with people forming school of thoughts and having real and professional debates. This motivates you to want to learn from them or learn exactly how they have learnt. and this is what we are missing in Nigeria. That's my opinion anyway.

if it doesn't just feel programming anymore, leave anything that has to do with programming for like a month, watch more tvs, go out more, stay out more, lock you room and spend more time with the fam. If you stay alone, just simply go out more. you're just going to be naturally inspired back to code. it's like pausing for a fresh breathe. It has worked for me more than often.

and if you simply looking for something new to learn. . . Jsut check what other colleauges of yours are doing (not in Nigeria oooooo)

I was just playing around these Nigerian job portals when i saw this Job Ad:

We seek to appoint a junior Web Developer/Designer with a high degree of technical competency that will focus on frontend and backend development. The ideal person will be able to work with Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress and Concrete5is added advantage.

• Applicant must have 2-3 years as Webmaster, Content Developer, Graphics Design, and Website design.
• Strong database skills.
• A very good knowledge in the following is a plus: PHP/Microsoft.Net (C#), CMS, .NET 2.0 Skills, CSS, Coldfusion, Adobe Suites and MYSQL/SQL, HTML, Javascript, AJAX and related development technologies.

Salary: N30, 000 – N45, 000/month.

Now, something that makes my heart beat faster is the Salary. I don't know the standard monthly income for web development professionals in Nigeria but if this is within the standard, then It is really poor.  Or is it fair to anybody who has experience in all these technologies they requested to be earning even 60,000 Naira monthly?

I will say that the framework is fairly stable now, i have used it to do about 12 websites already. The framework site is still blank, i am trying to round up
some more pressing projects first before i get down to documenting the framework and making the code available online - it is opensource.

Letzz still see what i_want_to is up to first.

DHTML. . . . It's a great project. Welldone. Just a quick advise. I see you are a core developer and not really interested in Design or front-end so much. However, I would strongly advise you outsource the User Interface and front-end development to UI designer of a front-end developer, so that the function of your framework would be complemented with a beautiful interface.

Make no mistake, the concept is not being viewed as Islamic but it is being introduced from a religious point.
Going by the concept and implementation of ''Islamic Banking'' since SLS  started it, would you consider it to be faulty or perfect?

Non-interest banking concept is not only entrenched in major religions in this country, it is part of our culture. The issue that bother the mind is why SLS decided to give it a religious coloration and make it a national issue. Please ponder on this from a neutral position if you can.

Well. . . I guess I should make it my point clearer here. the fact that it is called "Islamic Banking" and not that SLS called it "Islamic Banking". There might be any other form of non-interest banking. . . I agree to that totally (though, I'm not an economist and I don't know alot about forms of banking) but the university where I graduated from the economics Students had an "Islamic economics" course and I just have to point out that even in Countries that practice Islam even know it as and use the non-interest banking know it as "islamic banking".

IF the guy had said. . . OK let's do Non - interest banking without Islam word there. We would have accepted. But at the end of the day, Conspiracy theorist would still come back to say "Hell yeah . . . what he's doing is Islamic banking mehhhn" that guy is trying to turn us to an Islamic nation". Let us get somethings clear, i think it is preposterous for anyone to suggest that countries like Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and some other muslim country are a success because they practice islamic banking, that argument is lame. Infact, the more successful islam countries are the ones that de-emphasize religion in the running of the economy, they know that won't work.

well, I mantioned Malaysia in my post and I did not not say countries like Malaysia succeeded "because they practise Islamic Banking". It was rather used in negating the fact that countries that practice Islamic banking or has islamic orientation do not flourish as raised by someone else.

I get your point and i think I understand some of your points about hidden intentions. You may be right considering how things are done in Nigeria and who knows, you may be wrong. After all is said and done, it might be an harmless policy.

The issue here is pragmatics, to me. Even if Islamic banking will work in Nigeria. It's for the best of the nation to just stop it and let's continue to live the way we've been living. In any case, Nigerians like the country the way it is.

Yes, so that we dont want anybody to come with the idea of "Islamic republic of Nigeria" in the future. This is a trait we have to stop. In Nigeria, Islam:Christiann, 50:50. No religion should have voice more than the other.

I see you are islamophobic. . . but thanks for indirectly driving home my point which is,  "Islamic banking" should not be viewed from a religious point of view, It should be ciriticised from its concept and implementation. I don't think it is only muslims who like Interest-free loan and I don't think only muslims would benefit from the whole thing.

You people especially on Nairaland are quick to take issues to Religion and tribalism. Two main concepts that are dragging our nation down. We don't want to welcome anything that could possibly help the country.

If Soludo brings a concept, common Nigerian muslims would say.  .  . He's trying to turn the country to a christian state. If Sanusi brings a concept, common Nigerian Christian would say he is islamizing Nigeria.

and here we are. . . at the same point for years. . . . . .  .

X-factoria:

Guy, you can defend Sanusi all you like, but some of us know for sure that Islamic Banking is being introduced firstly to propagate Islam and secondly for the economic survival of the North.
#########################################################################################################
In Nigeria that I know, things like this are never done with unbias intentions. Sanusi is telling you what he wants you to believe. Sanusi is a fulani man who subscribes to their life long ambition of dipping the Quran into the Atlantic Ocean.

It's funny how Nigerians are making it seem like it is Sanusi Lamido that named it "Islamic Banking". Islamic Banking is what the concept is called even in countries where Islam is already their national religion. Take Malaysia for example. It's officially an Islamic State, nontheless, there are normal banks that have sister banks that are called "Islamic Bank". There is Maybank and there is Maybank Islamic, there is CIMB and there is CIMBIslamic, Even an International Bank which is not Asia bound, HSBC, has HSBC Amanah (Islamic banking and financial management).  Now, If in a country which is already an official islamic state, why is the word "Islamic Bank" should be emphasised again. It's simply because it refers to a different concept of banking rather than the literal meaning of Islam attached to the word.

But I get the point all of you are trying to make. You hate the word "Islam" and that's basic. If he came out initially to say present his concept as "Better Nigeria Banking", you would call him a revolutionary and the best for the country but now that's not the case since it is "Islamic" banking.

The problem with Nigerians is we have turned Religion to something else. . . and what is suppose to guide our ways of lives has deluded most people.

ok, I'm not a fan of Mainstream Hip Hop and all that but watching this video. . . I see some crazy energy in it. . . and that's a plus in a video where you think JayZ is jsut going be like a boss or something. He came through with all his energy and made that video feel alive.

And about the album. . . I just added it to the rest of my mainstream Hip Hop albums that make sense. Some joints are annoying to me no doubt, but most of them are good mainstream wise and deep HipHop wise.

And Ofcourse, My favourite is "New Day" produced by the Rza. . . I cant stop talking about that track.

and have never been a JayZ fan that much!!!!!
