Introduction The ISP Market In Nigeria Without a doubt the ISP(Internet Service Providers) market has been the most competitive space in the tech industry. I will be exploring the history of ISP from the customer’s point of view as well Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs). I will also provide a glimpse into the current trends and competition in the ISP market. Hopefully readers will know a bit more about the history of ISPs in Nigeria and will be able to make better decisions on the next ISP to use for themselves and their businesses when necessary. History Phone Lines The first ISP were organisations like the government owned Nitel and privately own Econet. Which used good old telephone lines to connect to the internet. Back then, you either payed for those or just had to go to the cybercafe. Especially since buying computers alone were very expensive. At the time, internet where seen as only for the privileged or for businesses. Dial Up Modems The next generation of ISP providers came through dial up modems. ISP providers such as Multilinks, Visafone, Starcomms and Zoom entered into the market to provide internet at faster and cheaper rates. This meant that a lot more Nigerians could not only afford access to the internet but it was more portable as modems could be moved around easily. The cost of computers had also dropped, with cheaper laptops being more readily available. Unfortunately, some ISP providers such as Zoom couldn’t survive the competition in the market. Multilinks and Visafone became the dominant players for a period of time, but that didn’t last for too long. Broadband After some time, the major mobile network providers such MTN and Glo took interest in ISP market. They decided to offer broadband internet with faster speed than what the previous ISP’s were providing. The big gamble these new ISP providers took was that instead of providing unlimited data caps like the previous ISP, they provided limited data. This was enough to win over customers and within a short time these new ISP providers had taken over the market. The market was split between those that cherish unlimited data plans even if it meant lower connection speed, and those that preferred faster internet no matter the consequences. Eventually most users chose the later option, leaving the likes of Multlinks and Visafone with far less user. ISP’s like Multilinks and Starcomms slowly but surely shrunk down to oblivion while Visafone were able to adapt well enough to keep their head above water. Major ISPs became the ones running the ISP market with new mobile network providers like Etisalat and Airtel (Formerly Zain) coming into the market. All these was just beginning of what would become the most intense war the tech industry had ever seen. SOURCE - www.lifeofanaijageek.com |

Anyone who has ever experienced the discomfort of illness will have at some point visited a hospital to see a doctor who will then deliver the orthodox system of medicine to treat the illness. On the other hand, many people have also had cause to seek alternative means of treatments from the herbal practitioners who use herbal preparations or methods to alleviate or cure illness. For some, they can have nothing to do with the orthodox system of treatments, while for others the herbal practitioners are an absolute NO! Then there are those between who are open to both sides of the divide, as long as they offer them relief from their ailments. Personally, I am not “pro” or “anti” any of them, so here are some of the pros & cons of orthodox vs. herbal treatments. ORTHODOX TREATMENTS Pros • Orthodox treatments give faster relief form discomforts as a result of illness and disease. • In cases of emergency, orthodox treatments come to the rescue, through surgery and other emergency responses, alternative treatments are not designed to deal with such situations • Orthodox treatments have offered lifesaving surgeries which alternative treatments are not yet able to beat such as in the areas of organ transplant. • In cases of an epidemic which claims many lives, orthodox medicine systems are of great need, through its research and results, such epidemics can be curbed, thereby saving lives in hundreds and thousands. • Orthodox systems have specialists attending to different parts of the body such as eye, ear & nose doctors, heart care doctors or for specific situations such as neonatal care or pediatricians who attend to children’s health. • Medications from orthodox systems are durable and have shelf lives of many months and years. Cons • Orthodox medicine treats the mind and body as separate entities, while in some cases a holistic approach is more appropriate. • Orthodox systems and treatment can be very expensive and unaffordable for many. • Orthodox medicines are famous for leaving toxic waste in the body which in turn can lead to other serious illnesses. • People with same illness get treated the same way, individual uniqueness is ignored. • Symptoms alone are treated or suppressed, and the underlying cause is ignored. • Uncommon illnesses are rarely given much attention in the area of research and cure since it will not yield profit to the pharmaceuticals. • Errors in orthodox systems i.e. through surgery can be fatal for patients. • Orthodox systems does not focus on illness prevention it only intervenes when illness has occurred. HERBAL TREATMENTS Pros • Herbal treatments treat patients with lesser side effects of toxic build up in the body that comes from the use of orthodox medicine. • They do not harm useful healthy flora in our guts (stomachs) as much as orthodox treatments through the use of antibiotics which wipe out useful (pro-biotics) and harmful bacteria in the gut. • Herbal treatments do not just treat symptoms they explore illnesses holistically before administering treatment. • They lead to longer term relief from illness without re-occurrence. • They are less expensive. • Individual illness considerations and more personal attention and care is given, compared to orthodox medicine produced for global consumption. • They offer more preventive systems, by encouraging body cleansing and in turn illness prevention. • They can work as sole or supportive treatments. Cons • Treatments/medications in herbal care are not as durable as orthodox, at its most unpolished level, herbal mixtures will have to be warmed or preserved temporarily by some means. • Herbal treatments lack standards through proper governing bodies. • They do not always provide fast relief and often need dedication on the part of the patient over some period of time before positive results are experienced. • The can interact unfavourably with other orthodox medications, leading to unpleasant side effects or complications. • They are not completely reliable. • They are not suited to responding to emergencies. Irrespective of which side you stand with, it is undeniable that this two are here to stay. The pros & cons of orthodox vs. herbal treatments will continue to be a long standing debate. They are both very much relevant in today’s health systems and who knows, the future may see a better balance and synergy between the two. Have a positive attitude. Source -www.yourhealthattitude.com

Healthy home made meals which save one from the many store bought junk food as well those from fast food chains are the way to go. So here is yours truly bringing you how to make Plantain & Oatmeal buns, this is my own recipe which I whisked all up and it worked just fine. This recipe is gluten free and lactose fee. Be warned that I am terrible with measurements, I mostly gauge with my head. Apologies to people who are very meticulous about measurements. WHAT YOU NEED Two medium sized very ripe plantains ( this saves you throwing away plantain you may think is over ripe and useless) One cup of finely ground oatmeal flour. Store bought or grinned at home. Onions and other pepper if desired One egg (not compulsory) Oil for frying – preferably cold press oil that can stand high heat (always avoid hydrogenated oils) A pinch of salt or seasoning cube if desired A teaspoon of baking soda (baking powder could work too) A blender and frying pan/pot PROCEDURE Blend the ripe plantains in a blender and pour in a bowl Add the cup of finely ground oatmeal flour to the plantain along with the sliced onions, pepper, salt, egg, and baking soda. Whisk together till smooth and fine. Place oil in a frying pan or pot and put over fire When oil is hot use a spoon to scoop pastry into oil. Deep fry and turn to other side as it begins to turn brown. Fry till all side is golden brown Serve I have written quite a number of articles as relates to junk food and their dangers. We all like to snack in between meals sometimes so its better at all times to find healthy alternatives. This recipe contains no sugar, its sweetness is derived from the ripe plantain, it contains no gluten which many people are intolerant to and avoid due to its many other negative health triggers. It is also fried in health friendly oil and oatmeal contains fiber which normal conventional flours lack. Fiber is health friendly too. Children will also love this. Have a positive health attitude. Stress is a condition we will have to encounter at some point in life. Stress is any event or set of events that disrupt the body’s equilibrium and this can reflect in different forms such as through one’s physical and mental state. Stress can increase a person’s vulnerability to illness. It is important to learn how to cope with stress, it is also important to understand how it occurs. We become stressed from demands around us, which could be external, internal or both, and these demands become more than the body’s normal adaptive resources can handle. Hence when we are stressed often or exposed to such a state over a long period, it manifests itself through physiological and mental symptoms, such as diarrhea, a throbbing temple, increased muscle tension, increase or decrease in urinary output, anger, depression, anxiety, nervousness, increased venerability to illnesses such as flu or mild fevers. Stress could come from work demands, the need to meet deadlines or simply an extremely demanding job that takes long hours off a person’s time. It could also come from life events that have strong effects on a person’s emotions, this include, the loss of dear ones, abusive relationships, and all other forms of loss that may seem too overwhelming for the body to handle, loss of one financial security or loss of some bodily functions through illness, accidents or any other channels. HOW TO COPE WITH STRESS Identify stressors – To get rid of stress in the first place, its source should be known, only then can all other steps towards coping with it become effective. Is it stress triggered from work which is a physical external factor or it is one triggered by internal factors such as emotions. Ventilating the mind – We all probably know how it feels when the mind is overloaded and racing all over the place, releasing the mind by calming it helps relieve stress, hence some form of meditation, breathing exercises, prayers are all means of ventilating the mind and releasing stress. Learning time management – When it comes to stress from work, sometimes it is never about how much time, but how strategically one works and is productive. There is a limited number of hours during the day when one is most productive and active, once these hours pass, the body can be said to be doing overtime. Learning how to manage time can then help a person become more productive and less stressed. Exercise – Need we talk more on why exercise is important? It is central to healthy living. Simply put, exercise releases stress and makes us feel good. Refusing to be stressed – Because there are things that will happen to us that we simply cannot undo, it becomes necessary to simply accept such events graciously, to save our minds and bodies from the torture. Death of loved one cannot be undone, rejection and estrangement from a loved one, or that job you were hoping to get and was certain you were qualified for but still lost are all situations you can do nothing about, you can only choose how you begin to respond to it, let it stress you or move past it and grow. Reaching out to support systems – in the case of emotional trauma, it is damaging to try and go through such times alone. Reach out to friends and family who can offer the needed support, or any relevant outlets that can help through the cause of the trauma, especially if it involves emotional abuse. Stress gives the body a chance to become more habitat friendly for illnesses that could be lurking in the body and waiting to manifest and since the body is the only place we have to live in, why stress it? Have a positive health attitude. Share this post with your friends and family. SOURCE - www.yourhealthattitude.com

There has been a lot of rave and hype lately about the tech industry in Nigeria. So I’ve decided to give my analysis on the industry. I start by talking about the biggest section of the industry in terms of profits, the telecommunications sector. How is the market right now and what are its prospects? I also briefly talk about the tech startups scene, how its shaping up and what lies ahead. Of course the software development field cannot be ignored. What has been going on in the field? and what are its possibilities future? Finally, I answer the impending question of the potential of the tech industry as a whole and the challenges it faces in meeting that potential. Telecommunications Sector There was a time when the word I.T was mentioned, it sounded incorrect without putting the “communication” in-between to make it “Information Communication Technology” or ICT. That is because it has been without a doubt, the most profitable sector of the industry for a long time. As far as I can remember the big telecoms companies such as MTN, Globacom and Etisalat have been competing like a pair sharks for the attention and loyalty of the Nigerian people. Recently, smaller companies like Spectranet, Smile and Ntel have come into the scene and have carved out their own market share. Competition has been so fierce that some of them have even started providing unlimited data subscriptions. Something I never thought I would hear again since the time of Nitel and Multilinks. This events cannot be over-emphasized, as it has provided access and more exposure to a wider range of people fueling self-education and efficiency. In my opinion, it’s just the beginning as the telecoms companies will be the backbone of the tech industry in the coming years. Tech Startups Scene There are two main sectors right now in the tech start-up scene. Those that rely on technology for their business and those that are fully or almost fully based on technology. For Example, Jumia is the most popular e-commerce company. It’s highly depended on its website but there are other aspects of its business such as logistics and warehousing. Hotels.ng, the hotel booking agency is an example of a start-up that’s fully based on technology. Both sides of the tech scene are thriving, gaining user traction, recognition and some even getting local and foreign investments. As there is more need for improved efficiency across other industries, there will be a lot more growth in the tech start-up scene. Software Development Sector In the area of software development there is a lot to look forward to. Due to ease of entry into the market there has been an influx of individuals to establish a stack in the sector. With the advent of technologies like WordPress, freelancers and entrepreneurs have been able to start businesses very quickly and establish themselves. However, in terms of the industry standard, there are fewer people that can create large scale or more specialized software application, especially since the software development field is a very complex one. I believe in the coming years, the software space will be a dominant part of the tech industry as Nigeria is undoubtedly filled with talented professionals and entrepreneurs well suited for that area. Potential and Challenges In summary, there is great potential in the technology industry particularly since the country is witnessing an influx of foreign grown talent that have brushed shoulders with the top professionals around the world. There are also interests from foreign investors who see the country as a prime destination for investment in the coming years. Despite the positives, there are still some challenges that need to be overcome before these potentials can be realized. First, there has to be improved security, although the security has improved quite significantly from the previous years, there is need for further improvements in terms of crime control such that investors feel they can invest for long period of years without apprehension and fear. Another glaring challenge is the economy. There is an economic recession that needs to be addressed. No industry can fulfil its potential in a bad economy. Furthermore, the ease of doing business needs to be improved to nurture the growth of the industry. In conclusion the biggest concern which hasn’t received much attention is the time it might take for investors to get their return on the investment (ROI). Due to the relatively unstable environment, investors especially the foreign ones might decide to take their investment to other places where they feel they can get a return on their investment within a shorter period of time. For Nigeria’s tech industry and its economy at large to achieve its true potential, we have to be able to move at the pace that the rest of the world is moving at. In my view, that will be the biggest challenge of all. SOURCE - www.lifeofanaijageek.com

If u are in the middle of crisis o, and u wud get killed for no reason dnt attempt to kill the person too or first just say I cnt give life why shd I take it. When ur kids are virtually dying of hunger and someone owes u money, will u still be thinking logically toward the person? A man had head phones on upstairs, cudnt hear what was going on in his home, his wife was being raped and stabbed downstairs in front of their daughter, he later heard and came down with a gun and shot the rapist, so shd he have left him for God in that situation? Pls point this post to the people attacking u. This lady's story apart sef, life and stupid goats drive people to extremes sometimes. |
Over a decade managing life with eczema means I understand the itch syndrome almost too well. However, during the cause of life we’ll experience itch that makes normal functioning close to impossible, the itch could be triggered by any number of factors, such as a sudden reaction to something external or internal, heat rash in kids, or other underlying health factors or challenges. Bottom line is that the itch is an uncomfortable matter to deal with, and anyone suffering it looks for some instant relief. So here is a list of some natural remedies to stop itching. ALOE VERA – Aloe Vera has been used for ages in skin care. It has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, many people have aloe vera planted in their homes. To use it for an itchy outbreak, simply scoop out the gel found in the leaf and apply to the itchy area. It should provide instant relief form burning or itching. GINGER – Ginger is particularly effective against itchy scalp and dandruff. Used alongside lemon it can be used on the scalp by grating some ginger root and boiling it with two tablespoon of lemon juice and water. The brew is then applied to the scalp and left for about 20 minutes before rinsing off. Suffice to say it is a natural shampoo which solves the problem of dandruff. LEMON – Lemons have great antiseptic, anesthetic, anti-inflammatory and anti-irritating properties. These properties are needed to relieve itching, as itching gets painful for the skin, it could get infected when skin is broken, and it gets red and feels hot most times. To use lemon as a relief from itching, apply the juice using a cotton ball, allow it to dry and rinse off with lukewarm water. TURMERIC Turmeric is being featured prominently in recent times in the health world as it has many benefits one of it being its fame for being preventive against cancer. The active ingredient found in turmeric is curcumin, this compound attacks the bacteria/viruses that leads to redness and inflamed skin. It can be made into a paste and applied to the affected areas. Turmeric has so many uses even in the beauty and cosmetic care. It can be used in cooking to give any meal the yellow colour or simply for its health benefits. CAPSAICIN – Simply put, capsaicin is the active compound found in chili peppers and it relieves itching. Capsaicin especially in cayenne pepper is being used in creams to relief not only itching but pain experienced from conditions like arthritis. It is theorized that the compound is able to achieve this soothing effect on pain and itch by overstimulating the nerves so they switch off altogether. Capsaicin creams can be used or the actual pepper split open and rubbed on the disturbing area. Always wash hands after the use of peppers as you will most likely put your fingers in your eyes at some point and that will burn and hurt. BAKING SODA – In its natural form is Natron. It acts as a natural acid neutralizer that helps relieve itching. It can be made into paste and applied to disturbing areas, leave for some 10 minutes. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR – Apple Cider Vinegar is also famous for its many health enhancing properties, many have reported it curing different skin ailments. The PH level of Apple cider vinegar is harmful for microbes but safe for the skin. Always dilute vinegar before use either internally or externally, never forget this. OATMEAL – Oatmeal soothes dry itchy skin almost instantly. Oatmeal baths mean soaking in a tub of finely ground oatmeal powder and water, or alternatively making a paste out the powder and applying to the disturbing parts. Products which have oatmeal as a major ingredient also help dry and itchy skin. NOTE – All of these must be used with caution. Nothing should be applied on broken skin or wounds without proper supervision. Everything applied to the skin should be washed off later. Where any bad reaction is occurring cease the use of any of these and wash off as not everyone may find these natural remedies skin friendly. There you have it, a few natural remedies to stop itching that I hope you all find useful sometime. Have a positive health attitude. SOURCE - www.yourhealthattitude.com
