Agbalowomeri: I can also be wrong about that ... From history, election year is usually bearish followed by two consecutive year of bullish run. But I am optimistic that FUGAS FFS will close the year either on a flat/ bullish note. How the Nigeria stock market will react next year? I can't bet on that. |

Godson201333: Thank you very much for your response sir,Yeah i read that they have been in loss since last year and I am currently thinking of investing in them as a penny Stock?
what do you think? I believe u're a newbie. I also feel u lack basic understanding on the criteria's to look out for that would guide your selection on stocks to invest. The stock market is a very dangerous place to invest ur hard earned money especially if u don't know how it works cos u may end up losing everything. But if you take your time to study books about the stock market, acquire enough knowledge and allow this knowledge to guide you, you are sure to succeed as you gain experience. I have been in the stock market for close to a decade yet I'm still learning. For a start, i will recommend this book for you: "How to make money in stock" by William J O'Neil. It happens to be one of my favorite books on stock market. Simple and easy to understand yet very effective. Search it on Google and its free to download. I wish you the best. |

maishai: Yeild on 1yr treasury bills is now 14.4%, might increase more in months to come.....I sha know that dividend paying banks will match the price of their stock with this......Stock prices about to fall If u follow the trend, u discover it is normal for stock prices in NSE to fall or be stagnant by early - mid November. By late November, it would pick up again. |

awesomeJ: The major reason why it's so is cos the bulk of the items we consume come directly or indirectly from the international markets, and are priced in USD.
When the dollar exchanged for 199, 10m was $50,000.00 Now that it trades at 360, thesame 10m is less than $28,000
There wouldn't have been any problem if your Honda Accord, LED TV, fuel, wheat or raw sugar were all sourced locally, but since they rather come from the international markets, the implication is that the 10m that could buy 2 units of the Accord sedan just some few months back, can now barely buy just 1. Now I understand.... I thought in real sense the capital u invested reduces in value. But u are talking about the purchasing power of money. Thanks. |

awesomeJ: You can never go wrong with diversification. Some who know their onions in real estate, could easily make double the returns on T-bills.
As per the issue with holding naira assets, when I start seeing the signs of an imminent currency crisis. I'll switch to eurobonds ASAP. 6% guaranteed with a potential for much more. For now, there's some comfort. Please, how does devaluation of the naira reduces the value of one's investment in TB or fgn bond? Is it that if you invested 10m initially for example, ur capital automatically becomes less due to devaluation? |

musty00: This sell off was across board o, not only Zenith. I only pulled out Zenith because we were talking about Zenith. It was a massive sell off by FPI's, irrespective of quarterly performance. It was transfer of wealth.
I won't miss out of this bonanza this year (buy 1, get 2 free).
We (Nigerians) know that elections will come and go without any war and all those election hypes, but the FPI's won't take any chances, they will still sell. The sell off might not be as bad this year though, no one knows.
I plan to be in full cash before August, IF I'm able to exit my remaining stocks (Zenith inclusive). It wasn't across broad. That same year(2014), forte oil opening price was 92 naira ( JAN 2nd 2014), and closed at 226 naira ( DEC 31 2014). Locodemy made a very good point. Those stocks that depreciated massively in price in 2014, check out their fundamentals for the year. |
Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by Calebbold: 2:41am On May 31, 2018 |
musty00: Here's how some selected stocks were battered in 2014 before election. The highs and lows are closing prices. Most of the lows here were attained in December 2014. In 2014, the depreciation in share price started during the 4th quarter. We are still in the second quarter and I believe we can still make some money between now and august from fundamentally sound stocks. |
Investment › Re: Bonds Investors Hub by Calebbold: 4:53am On May 28, 2018 |
awesomeJ: Bonds are kinda sold in units with each unit having a face value. so if you buy a 15% APR 2023 FGN bond with 10m at its original price, you'd be having 100,000 units of the bond, and since the coupon is 15%, your annual interest would be 1.5m
Now when you buy at the secondary market, you often don't buy at the original unit price. You may get to buy at say N90 per unit, which implies that you'd only be paying 9m to get thesame 100,000 units.
But at the end of the year, both you who bought at 9m and the other person that bought at 10m, you'd each get 1.5m as interest, because you hold the same number of units. But while his own yield is 15%(1.5m on 10m input), yours is 16.67%(1.5m on 9m input)
So coupon rate indicates the rate at which interest is paid on a bond based on its face value, while yield indicates the actual rate of returns to an investor.
The coupon rate is always indicated in the name of most bonds, and it doesn't change throughout the lifetime of the bond.
Only changes in purchase prices bring about changes in yields to bond investors.
Bonds bought at prices below their face values have higher yields, and vice versa.
Kindly ask for any further clarification if.... Your explanation would have been the case if most of the units for sale is #100 per unit or something below. Just realized that the units for sale is usually #1000 per unit. |
