TravelRe: Pain In The Ear While On Board Flight by cecegorz(op): 2:48pm On Nov 11, 2010
YIPEEE!!!

I arrived Kano today, and for the first time, ear-pain free!
Thanks to the Ear plugs i finally bought from ENT hospital @ Ogunlana drive.

I really enjoyed the smooth journey, even flying IRS for the first time, i was impressed with their chips/eggs/kidney fingers meal with a small pack of juice.
Unlike my beloved ARIK with their lousy puff puff and shared juice in a small plastic cup.

A colleague of mine who visited from the US over the weekend is seriously encouraging me to join them there. He says that the future is a lot brighter for me over there than in the UK.

The only problem is that I have just turned 41 and have a growing family, and will need another 1-2 years to sort out my license to be allowed to practice in America (i.e. more exams). And after that, I will have to spend at least 3 years as a Junior Doctor (resident) again! With my clinical experience in the UK and other life experiences, he thinks that once I complete the residency I will be able to start nearer the top and climb very high in a very short time. He suggests that I should think of supplementing my income during those dreadful ‘Junior Doctor’ years by ‘moonlighting’.
I thought they say 'life begins at 40'?  grin  grin  grin

But seriously bro, this is a true life issue, as they say in Chaz B radio show.
I will rather talk about your US options than our politically influenced unstable options. I think that if you actually fancy moving over to the states, the age factor is not really much of an issue. I have an acqaintance that actually went into first degree Law here in naija at about your current age (was previously doing small time biz). He took it up with all the challenges and today, the guy is already doing well in Private practice.

I think age should not always be a limiting factor in pursuit of happiness because whether we take the chalenge or not, the years will still roll by. Beginning with the glorious end in mind can help to make the journey easier to manage.

Look at those bolded parts, let the latter be your motivating factor. All da best!

Brothas, this is what I personally have waited for long ago. Zain Nigeria is the first network to start this! You can update your status, comments etc with this. Inshort, you get your notifications on your zain phone which needs no internet connection and maybe stop the messages you get in your mails. To get started Goto Settings>SMS, , On facebook. Or send 'fb' to 40405.
Guy, if you happen to be Zain's snake oil marketer, better tell them to wake up fast.

MTN and GLO had been doing weekly and daily full Blackberry services and recently MTN crashed the price to 3k/month, and you are here talking about sms service being great  huh  huh  huh
SMS service has been free on all networks since time immemorial.

How many times will you update profile and comments before you #10 turns to 5k?
People should rather do monthly 1k full browsing option that that sms crap joo!

Philip Emeagwali went to the US where people had been working on the models for the internet, cobbled up a couple of the computer machines for his project work and the white man again called him a father of the internet.  cool  cool  cool

Hmmnnn,

I think this is really the first time MTN is leading the price war.
Bringing down BB to 3k as a leading contender must definitely crash the price further, good for the consumers sha.
The only draw back is that when you tether the BB to your PC or lappy, they still slam WAP charges on you, unlike ZAIN that uses your BB package for the PC browsing.

Infact i dey go beef up my CV and send to you right away.

Anyway, i just have an idea right now for my next interview;

Interviewer: So how much do you think we can pay you
ME : We can start with 20m/annum

Interviewer: Eemmm,,, where do you see yourself in five years time?
ME  : I see myself earning about 100m/annum in this company, hope you guys can afford that?  cool  cool  cool

Its really funny how these things look normal as you move up, i remember when i was doing NYSC, my biggest prayer was to be able to make 50k/month, and i was damn contented on that.  grin

Don't despair folks, we'll still get to those EDs and SVPs one day too, or even print our own money like R. Kiyosaki likes to say about Entrepreneurs that do IPO of thier business.

AjanleKoko:
Your old boss smartly left out the other parts of his take home - the annual gbemus, like generator allowance, housing grant, etc, etc, which sometimes runs into tens of millions.
For the oil boys, the monthly take home is usually nothing. They get all kinds of allowances and grants. Maybe the guy is on 30m or something funny, but only gets like 12m as regular salary. The remaining 18m is probably paid in bulk.
That's what i was saying brov, in my org, if you see monthly take home for big dons, you'll think they are beggarly. But check out quarterly and annual pays, and you'll hide your head, so the weight won't hurt your skull  grin

im sure the senior managers earn between 15 and 20 pere annum and thats way above 750k per month

i agree only a tiny fraction of the population earn such amount so with your 750k, u suppose be big bobo for your area grin grin
Hmmnnnnn,
Maybe some orgs do flat rate of equal monthly pay for 12 months sha. Thats the only way a 750k/annum will be for around 10m/annum earners.
But for my org and many others i know that do housing, leave, furniture, location pays as a lump sum, set apart from the monthly take home, if you add all these to the package of a person taking 750k/month, you will be having stuff like 18-20milla per annum  ooo.
If that kinda bounty is still not enough for your desired living brov, you can as well consider a career in professional politricks  grin  grin  grin  grin

I know this has been asked alot of times on nairaland but can a young man survive in nigeria on 750k per month, bearing in mind rent, car , generator, diesel, family etc, some kain descions floating around
Tmoni,
This is a swollen exageration brov, 750k/month huh  huh  huh Unless you mean Zimbabwean dollars sha.
You are talking of a young man abi? Mind you that range of monthly pay can only be assessed by Senior mgt level in blue chips, and then some well heeled private business hunchos.
If you figure out how few that range are, then you know the rest live on stuff way below that range, and they still live a good life.

1.The money alone gets you 1 whole yr in rent @ a good location,
2.Even if you run Gen. every day, 1k per day amounts to 30k/month
3.If you service your car @5,000 miles average, you have no business with mechanic for at least another 3-4mths, leaving you with only fuel for the car., roughly 20k/mth
4.Depends on the number of family, a family of 4 can comfortably feed on 60k/mth, esp. if you do bulk buying for daily essentials.
5.Add another 40k for your side kicks within the month, you have just about 150k expenditure cool  cool  cool

You see, like Candy said, with 750k/mth, you'll be throwing large parries every wkend and still have change

In fact, a couple of weeks ago, I was on a plane that stopped over in Kano to drop and pick passengers. See as mosquitoes rush inside the aircraft follow us go Lagos

Aaaaaarghh!
Bros, if not that this trip is official, i for just cancel am straight. That's a terrible compliment for the seat of the Emirate! I thought Aba holds that notorious record of being filthiest but if Kano combines filth and bugs, then it's in a different league altogether.
Well, i'll try and finish my business in 2 days and run back.
I remeber the joke our mates that went to Maiduguri for NYSC used to tell, that if you enter a restaurant to order a meal, houseflies are normally part of the order ( as in, you eat with the right hand, and use the left to pick out the flies), your questioning their presence in the meal betrays your JJC status. Horrible stuff, man.

On the Amazon thing, it must be the cost of what you want to buy, not the yahoo thing. I buy stuff from Amazon using my Nigeria cards, all the time. Once the item does not have the shipping costs built in, they won't ship to Nigeria. No point using $60 to ship items worth $16.

I get the deal, told my coleague to help pick up one as he travelled, dude just came back telling me he couldn't source it on time before return date.
I have a date with an ENT this evening, sha. He must provide other paliatives before i jet out.

Hello peeps,

Congrats to tkb, dont forget us

Congrats also to cecegorz, as per the eardrum thingy, mine clears off when i pinch my nose and blow, i think that makes the pressure in your ears adjust to cabin pressure (not sure though)
Bros i did the blowing wella, it works  for me if its one way flight that i'll spend some time before boarding again, but when i have to connect flights or go back and forth within 48hrs, it really becomes difficult as the previous pressure needs some time to normalize fully before another one builds up.

Interestingly,i am billed to hit Kano ( first time ever) before the weekend, but this NLC/ FG thingy could play a role depending on how things pan out. I can't imagine being cut off from flying back to my family in no man's land if the strike hits. This one they're threatening shutting down air lines and all that.

Help me ask my learned Mallam, the modern day Boko Haram sect that is hell bent on sending the whole of the North back to the pre- historic age, were they also forced to take the oath of illiteracy and ignorance by swearing with the underpants of the British Queen.
Or was it Gordon Brown that signed the warrant for them to go and burn their already acquired certificates and possibly soak their brains in bleach inorder  to wipe out every trace of western education already acquired huh  huh  huh  huh

What has Sanusi done to replace the child trafficking called Almajiris system  that turn their young kids into beggarly Zombies with proper education that liberates their minds, since he had turned a new leaf from his grand fathers that perpetuated mass ignorance and poverty.

It's only people like Mallam Sanusi who's debauchery on the restrogrssive status quo of our national existence that will keep preaching the gospel of one Nigeria without negotiation.

Yeah, i believe in one Nigeria, but not as Lord Luggard envisioned it to be a feeder line to London's development plan. Until we sit down and negotiate our existence, we will continue to run on auto mode, the way the imperialists designed us to be , , ,  disorganised!
PoliticsRe: What Is Your Opinion On Capitalism? by cecegorz(m): 8:47am On Nov 04, 2010
kalokalo:
I smell a lot of hypocrisy here, The same people who condemn capitalism and extol socialism/communism's vitues would never want to live in a communist state. How many people do we hear of fleeing the "exploitation" of capitalist countries and escaping to socialist paradise? Yet we constantly hear of people braving shark-infested waters to escape from socialist utopia (cuba, North Korea, Laos etc) and to be "exploited" in capitalist countries (UK, US).

Any one that truly wants to understand capitalism should read Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. He sums up the book in the following comment, "it is not from the benevolence of the butcher or the baker that we expect our dinner but from his pursuit of his own self interest" Society's interest is best served when everyone pursues his/her own self interest. This is what makes capitalism succeed and others fail. They fail because they do not consider that man is naturally selfish.

Any ideology that forces all men to live equally is bondage. Any system that does not reward private initiative and enterprise is oppressive. Has anyone bothered to understand why things work best in Nigeria or elsewhere when they are privately run and every thing that is run by the state is poorly run? I challenge anyone to contradict me.

If you dislike capitalism and private enterprise, put your money where your mouth is, refuse to patronize goods and services made available through private initiative and enterprise and look to the state to supply all your needs. Do it for a year and come back to tell us what you learnt!
Guy, you may be kalokalo by name, but not at all in your thought process  grin  grin  grin  grin

I bet the people that are shouting 'death to capitalism!' can see the frivolity of their arguments. Most of them are even sitting in offices made possible by a Capitalist Entrepreneur, and will still be urging their kids to get quality education so they can work for a 'big' company  grin  grin  grin
In as much as the system is as flawed as the people implementing it, because 'to the pure, all things are pure, and to the crooked, all things are crooked' the world don't have it any other better way yet !

Endermic indolence of the Northern Oligarchs spurred them to entrench federal character( one of the worst things in this country) into our constitution, making sure they and their incompetent cronies are always part of the running of state owned concerns.
That is why they fight privatisation/liberalization of key industries with their blood because a Capitalist Entrepreneur will sweep away all non-performing cronies manning critical functions.
Policy reversals of privatised concerns (PHCN, NITEL, Railway, et al ) are mostly done because a section feels they can not field in quality manpower based on merit  as only the quota system gives them a permanent seat. But thanks to the glaring example of the Telcos, inspite of their QoS imperfections yet, warts and all, no sane Nigeria will ever wish the return of monolithic NITEL days!
Some of these are the socio-political bottlenecks that must give way for my country to take it's pride of place in the comity of nations.
PoliticsRe: What Is Your Opinion On Capitalism? by cecegorz(m): 3:18pm On Nov 03, 2010
ola olabiy:
You are right. Socalism will never work. And, by nature, we are not equal.

Let me give a good example here. The North of Nigeria has tried without any enduring results to bring the North at par with Southners, it has not worked.

They have tried to slow down the wheel of progress down south but it has not worked, either. Human beings need to compete. A blanket measure to support a region will only result in laziness and over-dependency on the State. This is why northerners look up to the State while Southerners are doing well, especially in the East, despite total negligence of the region by the State.
Human beings should not be spoonfed (at least, not always). Nobody would want to be creative, innovative or daring in a situation like that. How many families in th UK who have historically survived on benefits have 'escaped' poverty. Or attended unis.
Idle hands, they say, . . . . . ,
Good you brought it home.
The lopsided implementation and policy summersaults that have characterized our political leadership right after independence will never allow any system work here. Even if it's a system used in heavenly utopia! ,  and believe me, its a sad reality.
As independent regions, we were vastly productive and the people equally reaped the fruit of their labour, Enter the oil economy; we all sat back and started reaching out for hand outs from the federal, that was the death of our productive spirit!

AjanleKoko:
Hmm, I don't quite agree. Canada, Denmark and Sweden are reasonably viable socialist democracies. They're not expansionist, and are not super-consumers like the US or Britain, or even Nigeria. But generally, there is quality of life, access to all amenities, reasonable means of livelihood, etc,

I would rather live in a nation like Denmark or Sweden, than in a Nigeria of 150 million people struggling for access to amenities, a paper tiger. Or even in the US, where the evidence of imbalance of distribution, where infrastructure and national wealth is concerned, is glaring, and integration of multiple nationalities and ethnicities is still a pain in the neck.
That same reason above is responsible for us still grappling with issues of basic infrastructure  and amenities, 50 long years after independence! and not because we are a capitalist economy. Do we even have a name for the voodoo economic system we run here   huh  huh  huh

The day our leaders decides to entrench accountability and genuinely punish perpetrators of graft, our infrastructures will spring up and serve us without epileptic fits. Then, even the Scandinavians will gladly come and take up residency here too.
PoliticsRe: What Is Your Opinion On Capitalism? by cecegorz(m): 11:51am On Nov 03, 2010
Capitalism simply validates the maxim that 'All men are born equal, but all men are not equally endowed'

Nature itself rewards the strong and daring, enterprising spirit. Check out in the school classrooms and indidual world sports. You can't improve the weak in class works by handing out equal marks to everybody, neither will you hand over trophies to every competitor to make all feel good.
Having said that, the weak can decide to burn more of the proverbial mid night candle in order to stay at par with the top of the class just like in the capitalist society, the today's poor can become tommorrows wealthiest.

Just like Darwin's natural selection, it's the survival of the fittest and capitalism has survived over all the other -isms simply because it's the one that develops quick adaptations to the societal white waters - boisteriously dynamic.

However, governments needs to be dispassionate in mounting consistent checks and balances to mititgate the exploitation of its citizenry by the usurpers and greed ladden souls that want to feed where they never sowed.

Well,
All these consultations, i hope there were tangible deliverables which the aspirant (GEJ) solidly agrees to execute for the advancement of the people and the region.
You can't just promise a politician a bloc vote without holding him down to laid down commitments.
What are the KPIs set out for GEJ? These things need to be made public so that an average NDIGBO will know when the man has delivered. Let it not be that all the consultations was for their pockets and their immediate families.

Let UWECHIE tell us publicly in concrete terms, what projects they outlined for GEJ to deliver for the region during his tenure if he wins.

It is on record that NDIGBO delivered a bloc vote to OBJ in 1999, yet i can't point out any concrete benefit the region derived, rather it was a shambolic purpoted contract for the Niger river dredging and 2nd bridge building that he left the region.

Hey guys,
You mean nobody wants to share how first class cabin treatments feel on locals? It's like we all have a general feeling about the cost vs value discrepancy.

Ok, if you have one of them governors or politicians as a relative, can you get the info from them and share with us? I am sure they do fly premium all the time.
CareerRe: Welcome To My Office by cecegorz(m): 10:51am On Oct 26, 2010
Hey guys,

I just decided to change office for real, you know how it is; new energy, excitement, expectations, joy of leaving previous accomplishments to take on another, all the works, generally.

From techy IT to business IT is an option i have nursed right from the onset of my career having figured out that techy guys have a career cap. As a techy chap, you will always be on the system working while some boss sits down and be deciding what you get, and when.

Now, i don join dey chop company money (travel estacodes and lodging in those hotels you hear their names, all expense paid)  grin  grin  grin  cool  cool  cool

Basically now, my job entails travels to major Nigerian cities, doing presentations and workshops, developing and pushing electronic payments/options for large organisations, blazing new trends and making sure my company remains on top of the game.

My only issue now is that i happen to be in the statistical 3% of travellers who experience ear pains during flight take-off and landing, i have tried all the tricks in the book ( chewing gums, swallowing, yawning, closed nose blowing) without success. The only one left is to use an ear plug, unfortunately i've not seen it to buy in any of our airports.

Now that i will be flying more often, what do i do guys huh  huh  huh

I sort of have the same problem.  But mine is when the pressures starts.  Though just for a bit then it ceases.
I punctured my eardrum as a child so it hurts when the pressure is on.  Happens when i dive too.
Wow! you scuba dive? that must be an awesome experience, how does it feel at the bottom of the ocean?
i can't even swim well.

The eardrum ought to have healed fully, but probably because of your diving, it gets under the pressure more often.

Guys,
I love flying like crazy, i even wish i can get flying lessons and buy my own light aircraft. cool  cool  cool

I always make sure i chose the window seat so i can have those amazing views, gliding through the clouds, having the clouds well beneath you, seeing the outline of cities and towns look so tiny compared to the vastness of the sky, I just generally imagine how God set up the universe.
The views from above are simply breath taking!

One downside though, i experience pains in the ear during landing, i need to get ear plugs asap.

Guys,

I was really wondering if it's worth it going first class on local routes which is 1hr on the average. What do you enjoy in an hour that is worth twice the economy price  huh  huh  huh
Any time i try to buy ticket, i always quash the idea for lack of merit, may be i was wrong after all. Wondering if they have skilled massuers working on your nerves for the flight duration  cool  cool  cool  cool

Please share your experience if you've done first class on local routes, may be i'll change my mind.
TravelRe: Pain In The Ear While On Board Flight by cecegorz(op): 10:23am On Oct 25, 2010
Thanks for your replies guys,

I packed sweets and gums on my trip over the weekend, and also armed with the closed nose blowing skills. During the first leg, a combination of all the tricks kept the pain to the barest minimum, i was so happy that i've found a killer punch.

Then on my return trip, all hell let loose as all my combinations refused to work. my ears were so heavy and painful that by the time the host wanted to evacuate my left over lunch items, i just couldn't hear him.
I was just praying for the plane to land so i can rush down, had to take panadol b4 bed-time to ease the pain. Now everything has returned to normal but that experience is always terrible.

I even decided to buy ear plugs at the terminal building shops before the first leg but surprisingly, they don't have ( thought such items should be first on their counters). I even went to the Port health office and they couldn't give a helping hand! not even a single decongestant tablet from them.

Now that my new job requires constant travels, what do i do guys?
