AhmedEmeka:sorry, not what you expected |
I have tricked my parents, friends, family, my new employer, sponsors etc. The list is endless. I just hope I have changed for good. Some day, I pray I can make amends and re-write my wrongs. Grateful to have survived it all. |
GOOD-HEARTED NIGERIANS When I ran to Warri, I remember having to stay in the store with my mum. My mum, a retired civil servant, found it hard to rent an apartment as she was awaiting her entitlements. My dad (a gambler, like me), had wrecked her during her working days & fled to Benin. I had no choice than to go stay there with her. After two days there, I couldn't cope. The store was tight, overloaded with some of our household stuff we packed out of our house. Then there were flies in the environment. As well as urine smell, as she used a bowl there to urinate. So while wandering in our former neighbourhood, I met a man who once crushed on my elder sister. He lived in a comfortable apartment alone. I begged to squat with him for a month, till I could move out. He reluctantly agreed. Due to my subservience & commitment, he decided to let me stay longer. He fed me at times. But the gambling spirit had destroyed my thinking. I located a bet9ja shop in the area & I started selling some things he had to gamble. He didn't take note because he had abundance of them. Some low-lives at bet shops in Warri, buy anything. I would sell frozen meat he had, belt, chain etc to fairly-used buyers in order to gamble. I was so close to sneaking out with his flat-screen TV to sell & gamble, before my mum got a place for us to move in. I also remember convincing a classmate of mine to help me with an android phone in order to do research to teach our set (I was good in carrying people along). I sold the phone and betted with the proceeds |
CHURCH MEMBERS Before leaving for school in Benin, I was a popular figure in my church. I usually played lead roles in my church's drama. When I started gambling, I began connecting with them on Facebook to milk them of money. I will start with sweet words and prayers, after which, I would start pleading for help. The infamous & mischievous story I used was that I was a final year student who needed some money to complete his project, in order to meet the deadline. Not less than 15 persons supported me. I also joined a popular church when I moved to Benin. As Secretary, I was duly accorded a listening ear. I used the same story to leech out money from unsuspecting members. Professors & doctors who were members of the association I belonged to, really helped me. I wasn't thinking of clothes or food o my brothers. Just gambling. When I even got into problems with a 'strong man', I confidentially begged the chairman of my association for assistance, to be saved. I lied I was blackmailed. But I didn't pay. I gambled with the money before fleeing. |
MY EXPERIENCE AT MY LODGE I already mentioned how I sold my properties to gamble in my previous thread. I won't dwell on that. As dreaded and stern my landlord & landlady was, I fooled them. Before I got addicted, I had a good record of paying my rent ahead. At least, 6 months upfront. When I started gambling, I started defaulting. So I begged to pay on a monthly basis. This, he reluctantly agreed to. I kept on promising & promising, till the night I fled to warri. I sneaked through the back gate with a paper bag, bearing the scanty properties I had left. The man was a no-nonsense retired policeman, who could beat a person up for messing with his mind. I heard he left word that anywhere he sees me, he would deal with me. We all feared him. This is someone that once used a gun to threaten his son. He was also a traditional man. At least, he should be lucky he still has my rug, ceiling fan, t.v stand, hangars, cupboard etc to sell, to raise his money. There was a time I pleaded with a course mate of mine, to help raise the remaining part of my fees so I don't miss out of the exam. This kind man gave me 20000 naira from the money he was supposed to use to collect goods at Onitsha. I promised to pay back soonest. I gambled with it & kept posting him till he staged a drama in my compound. A matured man was crying for me to pay him back his money. I was there, helpless & confused. This touched the landlord & he gave him the money on my behalf from the meeting money with him. I promised to pay the landlord back on time. This was before I fled. My dad, I heard, later pleaded with him & paid back when he started receiving pension in his hideout. I confessed to my father out of fear of the diabolic powers my erstwhile landlord could use on me |
MY TEACHING JOB IN BENIN During the time I started gambling in 2015, I was running a part-time programme at UNIBEN, alongside teaching. I had served meritoriously in the school I taught, that I could be entrusted with money. Due to my desperation to raise funds for betting, I convinced my pupils to invest in savings with me. That by the end of the term, I would give it to them. I was in charge of collecting lesson fees for my class, from which, I gave a certain percentage to the Headteacher. I also gathered many private lesson (during break), by convincing the parents. I borrowed money from the school cooperative as well. There were two parents around the school who sold food. I collected food on credit, promising to pay when I received my cooperative returns. Towards the graduation party in 2016, I collected the 1000 naira per child on behalf of the headteacher, to be remitted when she returned. She had this tight schedule of teaching in a Government school in Delta, while staying & working in Benin too. The total will be close to 100000 naira. Did I pay back? No o. I used every little break to sneak out. I gambled it all off at bet9ja virtual shops before I fled. The figures will be up to 500k, if I add the legitimate money (salary, lesson fees, home lesson, bonuses etc) I spent on the act. Addicts hardly have a conscience. I am sure other workers who are addicts, dupe their bosses. |
Hurray! It's one month (the whole of July), without me playing bet9ja virtual. I'm gradually learning to make rational decisions. I go to bet shops to charge my phone intermittently, without the urge to punt. At times, I go there with meagre sums, which I do not use prodigally on the act. But it will be foolish of me to say I am completely 'cured' from betting. Maybe the future troubles I caused, awaiting me, is enough to deter me or probably, I am waiting on huge sums to go into my bank account, to trigger my 'mumu button' and then avariciously bet. Though, I am taking my recovery, one step at a time, accessing myself on a weekly basis. At times, I retrospect on how bewildering it is, for a young man like me (with no connection to affluent people) to have gambled off about four million naira, in the space of four and a half years of my unsavoury experience at bet9ja. I will let you in on how I fooled different persons, in order to raise money for betting. |
lefulefu:oh. I didn't meet him during my time in Ugbowo. only Father Obinyan and Father Imoni |
teewai3:hmm. I guess this is constructive criticism |
Destiny666:hmm. True. It''s as though they read gamblers' minds. I want to start afresh. I pray God gives me the strength to let go. I really admire those who have self-control in gambling. I attend church regularly now. I just pray I don't relapse once good money comes to my hand. For a start, little money doesn't move me to gamble again. It's impossible to beat the bookmakers. Even when one wins once, the greed to continue, makes one to try again, till one loses it all. |
Juliusmomoh:I do win, but little. And it is taken back from me most times, even before I leave the betshop |
estyvino:'learned?' more like 'learning' you are right. the spirit of trying to go back to recover is what I am fighting. I wish it was that easy to let go. Every little money that comes to my hand seem worthless due to the amount lost. I will try. three weeks without the act now |
PrettyBunny:hmm.. i get your point. But why do some people act as agent of destruction. They kill the joy and jovial nature in people, and toughen them. I am beginning to lose feelings for people and happenings around me as a result |
OYENIYIJK:yes. I went to Benin in 2019 to finish up after abandoning just project which was left in 2016. I sneaked in and out. thanks to my former classmates who felt concerned and raised some money for me to pay the outstanding fees. awaiting the result now. |
(3) ALL BET9JA SHOP OWNERS I hate all the bet9ja shop owners in Benin I patronised. Uwasota, Adolor, Technical Road, Ekosodin, BDPA etc. All the bet9ja shops in Warri too after I fled Benin. From Ekpan junction to Jakpa road (about three different spots) to Okumagba junction, Okere-Ugborikoko road, Opposite cinema junction, Meschak Road junction, Giwa-mu etc. Only God will judge you guys. You see people wasting their money away and you are not bothered. All they care about is their profit. Do you know some heartless bet shop owners go as far as giving you loans for your phones in order for you to gamble more. And with strict rules. Once you can't pay back within 24 hours, the device automatically becomes theirs. Gamblers always fall victim. We hardly hold a phone for long without collecting 'spiritual loans'. We hardly win when we take loans. I feel bad I sold the phone of one of my course mate who was motivating me to read after I started gambling. What has bet9ja addiction not caused? it's this selling of phone thing that got me in trouble. Sold the phone of a strong man after he collected loan with it from me. After threats and beating to get it back, I had to flee from Benin. As his guys were in the look out for me. Can you imagine that after staying back home for three weeks without gambling, the owner of the bet9ja shop were I lost the 250,000 naira loan Federal Government gave me, saw me and said: "longtime. We nor see you again". Na God go punish am for me. Not even a compensation or some bottles of beer to show appreciation. I so much hate bet9ja shops, their owners and anyone working there at the moment |
(2) THE GUY WHO BOUGHT MY PROPERTIES FOR PEANUT With gambling, one doesn't think straight. The more I lost out, the more I went back, looking for ways to recover what I had lost. I wished I had let go. I was able to forge school fees receipt to write the first semester exam. My friends who didn't want me to miss out with their set passing out, helped feed me and motivate me when I was low-spirited. But the pain wouldn't go away. I sought ways to try again. I wish I listened to their advice and that of my brother (who came to stay with me) to forget I discovered someone opposite St.Patrick Church Ugbowo who normally bought fairly-used items from final year students to resell at a high rate. This was how my story was to change from a tenant to a squatter. I began selling things in my room one by one to him to play bet9ja. All the things I had suffered to amass gone in a flash. This man was wicked. He priced the expensive things I had at a really cheap rate. Hmm. I wasn't really bothered at that time. I just needed money to gamble. A very big-sized mouka foam that will cost around 40000, sold for 3000 naira. Television - 2500. Iron - 400. Table - 200. DVD - 500. Bucket - 50. Laptop - 4000. Extension - 100. Sweater - 100. Shoe - 400. Hangers - 100. DVD laptop - 2000. Stove -300. Big drum for water - 1000. ceiling fan - 400. Suit - 500. 3 Bedsheets - 600. The list is endless. This man preyed on my naivety and desperation and milked me. Now living with my mum. I needed those things to start life. Now i can't stand on my own again. Only God will punish him for me |
(1) THE GUY WHO INTRODUCED ME TO BET9JA I can remember vividly when it all started in 2015. I was a bright prospect with a good CGPA in the University of Benin. I was in my final year, geared up for life. I was living a modest life in my rented apartment. Full of optimism and vigour. We were preparing for our first semester exams. There was a strict rule implemented by the administration of Prof. Orhunwense to ensure school fees defaulters were not allowed to write exams. I was a part-time student, so our fees were slightly higher. I was to pay 41,500 naira. I had about 32,500 naira. I had used part of the schools my mum sent to get essentials. It was a week to the exam and I was confused. After watching football at a viewing centre, I was strolling home one afternoon from the place with 'a friend' when I related my situation to him. He then told me about bet9ja and how my money could be doubled instantly. I followed him to the place inquisitive and desperate. I was the type never scared to take on challenges, as I always surmounted all due to my ingenuity. My brothers and sisters, how was I to know that this particular bet9ja will be the beginning of my downfall. To cut the story short, I gambled off all I had, bit by bit. Called my mum and begged her to send another fee as education was my life. She sold some of her expensive wrappers quick to raise the fee. I also gambled it off. I moved to selling my things and used other dubious means to get money since then, in order to continue investing in bet9ja imaginary profit. Only God will punish that guy for me. |
Barely 28 years and I am already living a life of regret and a life of a failure. From time to time, I reflect on all I acquired in the last five years and how I threw it all away due to an unexamined lifestyle of betting on bet9ja virtual. I keep wishing I were wiser to know that the gains of betting are ephemeral and it's problems, perpetual. I am always distraught and troubled due to my debts, addiction and fate. There are some persons that contributed to my sorry state. God will punish them for me. These set of persons include............. |

As harsh as what i am about to say might sound, there is no cure. Even if you work, you will dupe your employers to gamble. Use your salary too. You will drop out of school, steal to gamble, sell your properties and that of family members & friends, just to play bet9ja virtual. No amount of advice or prayer from an elder, priest or pastor will make you stop. Even beating from community boys or arrest, won't work. It's just one year you started. You should rather be scared of your future misfortunes, not small 300k. By 2022, your debts/troubles will be worse. People should avoid any financial dealings with you for their own good. I am speaking as a bet9ja addict too. Since 2015. I am miserable and unfortunate in life. The earlier the govt sees bet9ja as the new enemy of the youths, the better |
CAPSLOCKED: |
Godsonjolly:AMEN. Thanks for the concern |
VicM6:okay sir. I will get card tomorrow morning and get back to you unfailingly. |
ajailer:okay brotherly. Thanks for the tips. I will have to drop my passion for football to overcome the urge to gamble |
Goddys: |
Ginaz:hmm.. Opening up is something i hardly do because i shamefully hide my ways. It's affecting me more and more. I will change. Where are therapists found? Are they affordable? |
Kranediggy:okay. Thanks. I really pray so. Though i went there to charge my phone yesterday, i didn't take the little i had with me. Two years now, no light in my area. Can't leave due to low rent. I will work on self-discipline. Just back from Mass. I asked God for intervention. |
davealvaro:you are right about it making one's heart like a heart of stone. I am hardly moved by happenings around. I hope to have a victory story like you someday. Thanks |
