pazienza: I spent the new year at Ogidi, I hate to admit it, but Obi is second to none in road construction, the whole of Anambra is now interconnected with good road network, it is amazing. I guess Ngige did some of the roads too.
It won't be an exaggeration to say that no state in Nigeria has better inter-town, road network than Anambra, and what made it spectacular was that Obi wasn't advertising those roads in NTA or AIT like some states were doing, so most of us that don't visit Anambra often, came to think he was doing nothing. Peter Obi was a true leader. He knew his good works would speak for him many years after those vehemently denying they exist would have passed away.

My people, Today, i was boasting of having a good time at the Nnewi mall by the time i visit Nigeria and that provoked an interesting discussion with a very intelligent someone, and he said the design of Nnewi mall was flawed. Now, this man isn't just a charlatan. He knows his onions when it comes to architecture and construction. He actually advised me never to visit that mall if i go to Nigeria because it was dangerous. His reason was simple. The plan was to make the roof a parking lot, instead of the normal practice of using the ground floor as the parking lot and the first and second floors as the mall and cinema. This individual cited malls in many parts of Africa which used the ground floor as parking lot and the mall upstairs. I also learnt from him today that dead weight such as stationary cars on bridges were an engineering nightmare which could cause the best constructed bridge anywhere in the world to collapse. He did explain a few things about the danger being worse on a hot day when the outside roof is packed with cars and the inside of the mall is air-conditioned.The marked temperature difference on the two surfaces which interacts with how the materials behave under stress. His explanations got me concerned and a bit worried.
So i decided to ask the question here. In the light of many structural collapsing of buildings, is it wise to make the roof of a shopping mall a car park? Should concerned citizens reach out to the executive leadership now to use the ground floor as parking and not the roof? What do you guys think?

These little and inexpensive measures matter in making a city a world class destination for both residents and tourists.Enugu should continue to radiant the ambiance of a sane city where services work. |

biafrandream: Please how many snakes or scorpions have you seen on the road or in the woods, since you started living in England? If have not seen one before, ask yourself why. Granted that here in England, people keep snakes in their homes, but it is by choice and the owners take proper care of them. I grew up in the village and I can tell you how many times I had scorpion sting while growing up there. I know a lot of victims of snake bite as well. If we want to embrace modernity, it should be in all it's entirety. We cannot accept everything that civilization has to offer and not think of improving on our environment. The white people especially here in the UK move freely in the woods or forest because they are not afraid of being bitten by any dangerous reptile. Can you comfortably move around the bushes in our villages without seeing all manner of snakes. The answer is no. Our environment needs to be cleaned up and if you want snake, you can keep them in your house or in the zoo, that's what people do here in the UK. By cleaning up our villages, I don't mean falling all the trees or paving all the roads but at least the government should help in making our villages properly maintained and rid it of dangerous snakes. It's all about sustainability. @ the bolded, I live in the United States and i have seen many snakes in peoples' yards and houses.I have also witnessed people running away from snakes in a public park more than twice. In the hospital where i work, we have treated people with anti-snake venom serum for snake bites in the park. Now, unless you want to say England is more developed than the United states. In that case, I will not touch that side because English people themselves, not immigrants to their land, know the truth. Now, i agree with you about the need to have home pest control and kill dangerous snakes because i have seen roaches even in the houses of the very wealthy. Not to say it doesn't exist in the USA either. Just in a smaller scale. |

BuddahMonk: The teachers that taught me in primary school were mostly from Ikeduru and Urualla.
Even in secondary school we had more Imo Teachers than Anambra in my school then, the former LG chairperson of Ogbaru LGA was an Mbaise woman Chief Mrs Calister Nwachukwu 1999-2002, even as of now in Ogbaru there more Mbaise people in the LG than Ogbaru people then because she filled most of the positions with her kiths n kins from Mbaise.
Sometimes if i listen how these Igbo states insult Ndi Anambra i will like breaking the egg to make an omlet.
Anambra State government owned commercial transport company ANIDS have no park in Onitsha because government sacked them from Upper Iweka open space they were staying before.
GUO a transport company own by Anambraman was prevented from using a space in Upper Iweka as park because Anambra State government banned it, they even won Anambra State in court but the government is yet to heed the court order, if this were to be another person from sister state we know now.
Yet in Upper Iweka, Peace, Enugu North, ITC, Abialine, etc are loading without any harrasment or disturbances from Anambra State, can this happen in those states. Go to Peacepark, speak Nsukka they will not charge you for loads but once your onye awaraku(Anambra) they will cut your throat with charges.
I have been pretending as if am not seeing or hearing all the anti-Anambra sentiment going everywhere in Igboland, i have been quiet for a long and must go on and spill the beans no matter whose Ox is being gored.
They are just conspiring to bring people that did nothing to them down, one wawa dingbat said during Old Anambra they were dominating Ndi Anambra in politics but the Okpahead didnt remember that Anambra were the face of Igboland in national politics, Zik adopted Jim, Ekwueme adopted Ono, many Anambra like Edwin Umezoke were gunning for speakership while Akwaeke Orizu have been the Senate president. They said they are wawa people but when you call them wawa they will be scheming for a fight yet those they called ndi agbaenu are going about their normal businesses without blushing with fury.
Its not my intention of writing this but the anti-Anambra sentiment in Igboland is becoming more and more popular among the elites from sister states so i must let everybody know that we know what is going on. My Brother, I have observed with great concern and dismay, the subtle rise of the anti-Anambra tirade amongst our own kith and kin. One US based taxi driver demon called Ikengawo had started it and tapped into primitive ill feelings amongst some of our brothers.
There is an age long adage " Success breeds Envy" We should see this new calumny as a recognition that something good is finally happening in Anambra. The cure for jealousy is to achieve greater success. Therefore, your observation should not make us to seek revenge or retaliation, but should inspire us to achieve greater success.

Is this the Wetheral by-pass that was newly completed? What is that massive monument being built along wetheral by pass for? I hope Rochas will give Imo an ultra modern stadium sited around Naze or owerri outskirts. Imo used to be a powerhouse in Nigeria's sports. Partly not having a truly modern sports complex is responsible for the decline of interest and sports enthusiasts.

The condition of the federal road is atrocious. Horrible horrible roads. By the way, this is Ninth mile corner, Udi local government area of Enugu state. The worst problem with Nigeria is IMPUNITY. People just drive into the other side of the expressway against traffic and Police does not arrest them. Then everyone decides to break the law and all hell breaks loose. Our Police and law enforcement people should learn to punish offenders as a deterrent for others to commit crime. In this case simply detaining the offending drivers for 4 hours would be adequate. Since it delays them while they were trying to beat everybody else. |

spyder880: Enugu is a very huge city, although this style is not so popular in the city, we have a lot of adaptations and even some buildings that may look more sophisticated than this building. Most of the housing estates in Enugu has a good number of unique architecture inside them. Are you planning to 'import' and plant this building in Enugu soon? By His Special Grace, If that your plot work out, I can give this picture to an architect to design something similar on the outside. It looks simple enough but with a little touch of colonial architecture. I also like that the structure is not square or rectangular and has the colonial appearing window rain shield. I'll like a type of duplex where only master bedroom, living room, kitchen and store is downstairs. Upstair will have two rooms on either side of the house with their own toilet and bath. The important design for me is that one can see the living room or palour once they come out of the upstairs bedrooms. And the bedrooms on the right and left side of the house is linked by a bridge overlooking the living room downstairs. Like the design in the Pics. showing the upstairs staircase and "link bridge" to the upstairs bedrooms from the living room downstairs.

Comparing the first two pictures of Hotel Presidential below to the last two pictures of Hotel des mille collines, You can easily see from the pictures that to upgrade Presidential hotel to look like Hotel des mille collines will not be hard for those in the hotel business who know what is needed.
Perhaps, the only slightly difficult step will be the physical renovation and re-painting of the edifice. Especially to change the old design iron-bar balcony railings into a glass railings as they did with Hotel des mille collines in the picture to give it a modern 21st century look.Actually, the best approach would be to install new rug in the entire hotel and discard most of the antique furniture after the re-painting is completed.
The State government simply isn't into hotel business and just cannot do this. It is better to sell this iconic hotel to an international hotel group to do the magic transformation required or for government to complete the renovation and hold only 40% share in order to allow hotel management experts to manage the new hotel as a business to prevent it's rundown again.

spyder880: Who was telling us about some works going on in Hotel presidential? The Hotel Presidential , Enugu has a similar design, exactly the same 4 floors, similar number of rooms and similar physical structure as the Hotel des mille collines in Kigali. Like Hotel Presidential , Enugu, the Hotel des mille collines was also damaged during the Rwandan civil war. However, after the Rwandan civil war, there was privatization and transfer of ownership of the Hotel des mille collines to a competent hotel group to manage. And the government only played a support role to assist the new private owners to succeed by providing quality access roads and restoring the power lines. The Hotel des mille collines has since re bounced to its former glory. With the new status of Enugu as a key business city in Africa with direct international flights, 4-5 stars hotels in Enugu urban will soon become a billion dollars business. Can someone advise the state government to organize an auction by inviting international hotel groups to submit their bid. What ever amount is derived from it's sale is better than sinking millions into renovating it, just to sell it for about the same amount at the end of the day. When it finally dawns on us that the government cannot manage hotel businesses. If this hotel Presidential can be transferred to the right hotel group such as Meridien, Hilton,Protea, courtyard or other good hotel managers, we will be amazed what goldmine this hotel truly is. Just as Modotel Owerri was transformed into an amazing icon by the Rockview group. Talk-less of the fact that a rejuvenated Presidential hotel in the heart of Enugu will massively spur tourism into the state.

I guess it's either go via the exit into independence L/O before one reaches the naira triangle, and then drive to otigba junction and then connect Abakaliki road via 82 div to reach Abakpa junction, or another way of doing it is to make a right turn at naira triangle, and drive towards the direction of Abakaliki, then get on the airport flyover and get to the other lane. CA: Chime is an asset to Enugu
Kieran Gozie Enechi is the legal adviser to Lagos-based Adada Media Forum, a collection of media professionals of Enugu extraction with a commitment and drive to cross fertilize experience and exposure in order to meaningfully contribute to the social, political and economic advancement of Enugu State and her people. He speaks on issues of interest in the state. Excerpts: By Chinweoke Akoma What is your honest assessment of the current administration in Enugu State ? Something beautiful has happened in Enugu in the past seven years and is continuing. The man in the saddle, undoubtedly, has brought the actual delivery of democratic dividends, home, to the constituent parts of Enugu, a clear departure from the frenzied rhetorics of yesterday. This is a natural progression in the growth process of our democratic practice and the people of Enugu are glowing with joy, especially, the ordinary man. Gov. Chime Gov. Chime I remember the enthusiasm in the voice of a commercial cab operator I boarded while on a private visit to Enugu sometime ago. “Anyi eji gi kwe Governor Anyi achi” (we revere our governor highly), he enthused. Upon further enquiry on why they hold him so dear as to bring out a unique ring of passion in his voice, he explained that the people of his states never realized governance has the capacity to undertake transformational infrastructural developments as witnessed since the coming of Sullivan Chime’s administration. Enugu State now is beautiful. The evenness of the distribution of infrastructure and the rapidity of focused completion recommend Enugu as first among equals in that top class of four performing states. What accentuates the rarity is that the Enugu government is quiet about these positive developments, rather directing its steam on target completion dates for more and more projects for public good. I call this the Enugu example. It is shinning for all to see upon a passing visit. Expectedly, the mind behind this unique kind of leadership direction will necessarily be imbued with a keen sense of fairness and good conscience. A fallout of this mature approach from leadership heights was the pronouncement on zoning and rotation of elective positions. As you know, this was widely received by a grateful and overwhelming majority of Enugu people across the state but not so for a few with certain interest. We can safely situate the current political developments in Enugu against this backdrop especially after the emergence of the obvious popular candidacy of Hon. Ngwuanyi as the PDP consensus candidate and inevitable possessor of the onerous, challenging legacies of the Chime administration. Another springboard for the current developments was the governor’s wise decision to yield to the yearnings of his constituents to be of further good use to the people of Enugu in a strategic electable platform in the coming dispensation. Since then, the few, who felt threatened, have made all manner of desperate moves, including character smearing in an opposition newspaper. The trend is not just sad but tragic. Sullivan Chime is unarguably PDP’s poster person for the successful delivery of dividends and a ready electoral asset in all the composite parts of Enugu today. How do you look at the attendant positioning of Nsukka people in the emerging scenario? The zoning of the gubernational slot to Nsukka zone to contribute its quota in the concerted efforts towards sustainable up-building in Enugu is in harmony with the notion of equity and good conscience. Simply put, it is the right thing at the right time. No rational Enugu person will have issues with this except out ignorance of our geo-political dynamics. On the flip side is this serious duty imposed on Nsukka to raise the bar of excellence set by the sterling performance of the current administration. This is an onerous duty that Nsukka people must discharge. What is the position of Adada Media Forum on the current happenings in Enugu State? Adada Media Forum is a collective of media professionals of common Enugu extraction with a commitment and drive to cross fertilize experience and exposure in order to meaningfully contribute to the social, political and economic advancement of “Enugu anyi” and her people especially, the generations closely following us. Therefore, as a stakeholder, the Adada Media Forum has taken a well considered position in the unfolding events in Enugu. It is only natural that the weight of the forum’s full support will be behind the governor’s breath-taking transformational strides in infrastructural developments and provision of amenities. The Forum also calls on all well meaning Enugu indigenes to massively support, with votes and voice, the governor’s transparent bid to enthrone equity and fairness through the constitutionally entrenched principles of rotation and zoning entrenched in the PDP constitution, entrenched in the Nigeria constitution. The inner maturity, transparency and integrity which Chime has brought to governance in Enugu eminently presents the state as the next destination for any meaningful field study of the modern benefits of ideal philosophic statesmanship. As a body, Adada Media Forum joins all other well meaning stakeholders in Enugu to send out loving prayerful thoughts for this phenomenal governor, and pray that the right of divine grace may bring him creative solutions to all emerging situations and produce benevolent outcomes for him and the state. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/chime-asset-enugu/#sthash.3zmUfpLX.dpuf http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/chime-asset-enugu/ |
